No direct connection was required for us.I plug it into the porch power outlet and it wirelessly boosts our house wifi signal to encompass our backyard.
Works great.
It comes with instructions to have it recognize and link to an existing wifi signal. Pretty straight forward.

You can under 2 easy conditions. 1. The extender must be plugged into an outlet where it recieves a good wifi signal from your router. 2. You have a 300ft cat6 cable or multiple cables with eithernet connecting clips inbetween each one. Side note: If you run the cable to that building and buy another extender (so 2 total). Plug the cable in the other extender at the building in the woods. You would then have wifi all around this building in the woods :) hope I answered the question!

Does this extender work with Windows 8? I can see this network extender show up on my wireless network connection but it won't allow me to connect. It ask for the password so I use the primary modem password and it won't connect.Thanks.

You have to go through a password signup process when you first use it. From then it will not ask for a password when you click on the wireless network connection. It will remain connected and log in when you turn your computer on again. Unless you log out of the wireless network connection.by
