I am deciding whether to purchase a slingbox or a similar product by Belkin. I understand that with the Belkin product I could watch recorded shows on my iPad without an internet connection. Does the Slinbox 350 have this capability?
You need an internet connection (wired or wireless) to use the Fire TV box. You'll also need a free HDMI input on the back of your TV so you can connect the box.
The Slingbox 350 only connects via ethernet. The Slingbox 500 connects via ethernet OR wifi.
Another option if you need wifi for your whole home theater (game systems, TV, etc) is to use a small router or media bridge like a Netgear N900 WiFi Adapter (WNCE4004) to take care of the wifi connection for all your home theater devices. This product adds to the cost, but may be worth it if you need to setup more devices that need network access in your home theater.
The Slingbox does not use direct connection to your DVR. However, the slingbox 350 and 500 include IR transmitters on all sides that talk to devices that are near by ... OR if that doesn't work they also have an IR emitter that you can place in front of your DVR or cable box.
In my experience, I have placed the slingbox on top of my Motorola DVR and the IR emitters on the slingbox work perfectly.
Neither, actually. With the Slingbox 350, you'll have two setup options -- first, we've built IR emitters right into the case of the Slingbox, powerful enough for use in most home setups. The second option is the included freestanding, omnidirectional, external IR emitter that plugs into the back of the Slingbox 350.
