AD Astra is not a bad film. It's not a particularly good one either. It mimics 2001 A Space Odyssey in shots, plot points and pacing but, doesn't come close to that monolith of a film. So, that out of the way, what do we got? A beautiful moon sequence, very nice score, lots of low end spacey ambiguity and an enjoyable ride. I liked it because I love sci fi but, this one was weird because it seemed like it would be fairly hard sci fi like 2001 but, went cuckoo for cocoa puffs at the end which I just thought would be impossible but, whatever. And I don't mean 2001 wasn't cuckoo for cocoa puffs, of course it was, I'm talking the fact that it doesn't go all Kubrick it just stays in science that to me, doesn't work, much like that Gravity travesty. Anyway, it's a good film, it's beautiful, it scratches the sci fi itch. Oh yeah Brad Pitt's in it and he keeps it interesting but, he never gets to play off Tommy Lee Jones and that's a shame. If we're gonna go all the way out there, let's stay another 30 minutes for heaven's sake and have these guys hash some things out like Dafoe and Pattison in the Lighthouse. Speaking of Pattison, check out High Life. No hard sci fi, all cuckoo for cocoa puffs, low budget like Dark Star and yet it works where this one doesn't. Between the two there is a fantastic movie.

Old school form, a bit pat, yet very enjoyable. The acting is quite good especially Daniel Craig though I can't tell if I admire his accent or hate it. I'll go with the former. The 4K transfer is a beauty. Dialog (and you get a lot of it) is crisp and clean, never needed to strain to hear and there aren't any volume increases for jumps and such so, it's like watching a nice Ellery Queen or Murder She Wrote, which they do the latter! The house, knives, all of it add to the film and it's fun watching this cast interact though I could have used more Jamie Lee and Tori and a bit less Don and Chris. But, the rest of the cast is note perfect. Mercifully you can show this one to grandma and she will dig it. 4 stars for fun and technical beauty.

Fantastic movie. Easy to see why it won Best Picture. All the young pups watch movies in English with closed caption on anyway now (which I don't but, all my 20 somethings do) so, get with the program and read up butter cup. The acting is MORE THAN worth the subtitles. Also, the Blu Ray transfer is great, both sound and vision. Very little extras but, for the most part I could care less about that, that will come. If you're a super fan of the film the 4K might be worth a rebuy but, this is a super transfer that looked great on my Sony OLED. The whole family was immersed and all came out with big thumbs up. A great movie to watch trapped in your house like we all currently are!

Maybe not better than Batman Beyond's Return of the Joker but, I'm going to say tied with it. I'm not sure that an upgrade to 4K is worth it for this type of animation but, forget the technical aspects, let's talk about the film. Basically perfect. It adheres closely to the story line (the reason I can't stand Hush) and captures all the feels that made the graphic novel great. It pulls no punches and yet doesn't go over the top and off topic with a flown in Batgirl makeout scene (I'm looking at you Killing Joke) or something equally ridiculous. It does get the dynamics of the main characters essentially right. It's a great alternate timeline/universe story done perfectly.

First of all, I'm not much of a Matt Damon fan but, he absolutely nails the role of Carroll Shelby. I am a Christian Bale fan and he absolutely steals the show with his performance as Ken Miles. Two of our best actors at their prime, working in gorgeous cinematography with an absolutely lush sound field, on a topic that involves what it means to be a man in America (the best and worst of it) what's not to like? Nothing. Pretty much a flawless film and a worthy add to a movie collection. I had to go outside and put the top down and drive the hell out of my Ford the next day.

If you're like me you just didn't trust all those low price upgrades of one of the all time classics. I just couldn't pull the trigger. Well patience is a virtue because this 4k transfer is nearly flawless. The B&W to Color effect is intact and you can even feel a little bit of that magic audiences must have been blown away with back in the day. The scenes centering around the Tin Man in the woods, really look gorgeous and surreal. Just a lot of fun seeing Oz look this good.

Right from the get go, the opening scenes of the car traversing the mountains comes alive. What was sort of a "meh" whatever opening title sequence is now imbued with dread and awe as the little car climbs higher and higher above the snow line. So, unless you've been under a rock you know this story and this transfer pretty much nails it. Details come alive and reward repeat viewing (the cans of Calumet on the shelves) everything in it's evil place. There is definitely grain to this film so, don't expect the age of this film to not show but, that is part of it's charm. Although I will say, 2001 set the bar so high for an old film 4K transfer, there is a little softness here in some interior scenes that makes you wish a little more digital muckety muck was applied. But, forget that and just buy it.

So, if you're like me buying a TV is next to buying a car in second guessing myself. What bells and whistles do I need? Where is the best price point, etc. I purchased this at $2499 and I can HIGHLY recommend it at that price and maybe even more. You probably have your own brand preferences but, out of the decision between comparable Samsungs and LGs (a lot to think through with their slightly less expensive options) I went with Sony. Let's get something out of the way first, if you are buying this to improve your cable viewing, you're wasting your money. Sports look a tad better than my old 4K Samsung, the uniforms are probably more true color but, it's not a grand (literally and figuratively) difference. Where this TV shines is on 4K and above content. A couple of YouTube test runs and the wow factor sets in (I feel sorry for everybody who bit hard on 3D glasses because this stuff is basically 3D now), which also points to a good feature, internet content runs quickly and the remote has voice activation. Never thought I wanted that but, man is that a cool feature I won't live without again. But, if you want to hear about 4K movies in a darkened room let me cut to the chase. I've never seen anything better. OLED is amazingly black and that makes a HUGE difference. My test was Stanley Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey in 4K and my mind was blown immediately. I've owned this in every format it's come out on and I have never seen this movie like this. I saw so much more than I ever have I don't even know where to begin. Clearly Stanley is smiling down because this is how the movie should look. Even the opening and end scenes are HUGE upgrades over bluray but, the real winner is the second segment (trip to the moon) where the blacks are so freaking black that in a darkened room, you don't see the panel. You just see the black of outer space flowing into the room and with the sharper details in the stars and models, you feel like you are floating in space. The other scene that is absolutely breathtaking is all the reds and blacks in Hal's memory chamber. Now Bowman's GREEN helmet just stands out (I'm sure there is a point to this color somehow from Stanley) and the scene takes on even more power. Just brilliant. Worth the price of the television for those 3-4 minutes. Operates with my old Samsung soundbar just fine and does basically the same stuff we've heard for a long time now. Super light. I had Geek Squad still set it up on a Sanus full motion mount because it is beside a fireplace I pull it out from and it works like a charm. You definitely want to be carefuly pulling from the sides however, as top and bottom seems to be the way with this super thin panel. I did think about 75 inches versus 65 but, with the way the OLED works and because of space limitations, we are sitting about 10 feet away and 65 field of vision feels just right. It definitely uses the space well and for movies, because of the OLED pixels turning off to perfect black you no longer see the bars in a dark room. You just watch the best picture you've ever seen.

Beautifully shot, extremely well acted and yet somehow the music takes a back seat IMHO. There are some chill bump moments of Elton and Bernie's first collaborations but, while I was told this was more like a musical it really isn't. I appreciate the departure from Bohemian Rhapsody but, in the end both suffer from spending too much time in the fallow years (they just aren't that interesting musically or story wise) and not enough in the alchemic launching pad days which is where the excitement and pathos really is. Yes Elton lost himself but, all we really see are sketches. All that said, it's a ride worth taking but, just be prepared for a lot of melancholia. Picture is A- in 4K maybe just slightly flat but, still with good detail. Sound is tight and compact, at good levels between all the going back and forth between music and dialog.
