Stunning!

The 4K presentation here is often referred to as 'reference quality' and I see why. The video is clean and detailed. The audio is immersive and thrusts you into the action on screen. And there is plenty of action. I definitely recommend this film. Watch it with a decent surround sound system for the full effect.

A 4K Upgrade Worth A Purchase
on January 22, 2020

What an upgrade! I owned the original Blu-ray and it was nice, for sure. But the 4K and HDR treatment here is phenomenal. Add to that an immersive audio track courtesy of Dolby Atmos, and the film becomes a new experience for fans who have seen this film before. The opening race scene lets you know immediately what the 4K UHD Blu-ray offers over the previous iterations of this film on home media. It's fantastic. The crowd cheers while the cars roar around the room. Low frequency effects are sprinkled throughout that will occasionally rumble the room. Add to that the exclusive Steelbook packaging and a very low price (I purchased this during a holiday sale), and you just cannot pass it up. I am so glad I upgraded this movie in my collection. Highly recommended.

Best Value 4K Player on the Market
on December 28, 2019

The Panasonic UB420 is the third addition to my 4K UHD Blu-ray player lineup. So, I didn't NEED it, but it was $100 off the normal retail price. I wanted to try out the HDR optimizer. Going in, I was a bit skeptical as to whether I would notice any improvements over my other players, a Philips and a Sony, both of which have served me well. But I was surprised that I actually did see a difference.
I found the Panasonic UB420 to have a slight edge in terms of overall picture playing 4K Blu-rays. I looked at several scenes in Toy Story 4, Shazam!, John Wick Chapter 3, and others. And I felt that the picture was more balanced with plenty of shadow detail and image pop in the highlights. I have an LG OLED and I do feel like the HDR optimizer is doing a good job of mapping the EOTF to my display to produce some truly excellent images.
DVDs look great, as well. That is important to me because I have a healthy collection of animation on DVD that will not ever see the light of day on Blu-ray. Lines are clean and sharp, and you can enable noise reduction, if you want, to smooth out the noise a bit. Blu-ray upscaling is also very good. Of course, if the player can handle DVD upscaling well, it can certainly do so with Blu-rays. With DVD and Blu-ray playback, you can choose from three built-in profiles to adjust noise reduction, sharpness, etc. one of which is not adjustable and disables all processing.
The remote is a standard Panasonic control with no backlight. It's a bit too big with too many buttons crammed into the small space; I have hit the Netflix or Home Menu buttons by mistake. But that is a minor complaint and one that is easily remedied. For instance, the player supports HDMI-CEC, so I can use my TV's remote for basic controls like pause/play and navigation. Or, get a universal remote.
The other downside is that as of this writing in late 2019, it does not support Dolby Vision. The upgrade to the UB820 that does support it is more than it would cost to buy another UB420, and the difference doesn't justify the price, in my opinion. I see no reason to not have Dolby Vision on the UB420. The entire line of Panasonic players have the same HCX processor. My Philips player supports Dolby Vision, and it cost less than the UB420 in 2017. Panasonic really should consider adding Dolby Vision to this player in 2020 via a firmware update. If they did, they would make a lot of owners of this player VERY happy. It's the only thing missing, for me.
The player is a winner. The menus are clean. The system is responsive. It has played everything I have put into it. It's just a rock-solid player. I find it is also rather quiet. I do have it inside a closed-door cabinet, but I don't hear it or my Sony, unlike my Philips player. The menu images are crisp and the information graphic is sharp and clearly shows what is being read from the disc as well as what is being output by the player (both video and audio) along with bit data. There is no display and only a tiny red indicator that glows on the front of the player when it is powered on, but that's fine.
I highly recommend this player. It's a great performer with several options to tweak the video output for us videophiles looking for the little bit of extra performance from our systems. Plus, it's just a reliable system at a great price. I trust Panasonic. They know good video quality and I had one of their great last plasma TVs. Now, they just need to bring their (OLED) TVs to the US market and add Dolby Vision to the UB420.

Don't Miss It!

I feel like many of Laika Studio's wonderful stop-motion films don't get the attention from audiences that they deserve. Everyone is flocking to see the latest computer-animated films, but they aren't going in droves to see Laika's films. However, they should be. These films are so masterfully crafted. There is so much work that goes into them, for sure. But they are so well made that you feel like you're watching a computer-animated film at times. The animation can be so fluid. The details and textures are just incredible...and it's largely all physical.
I would love to see this get a 4K UHD Blu-ray release, but we get a very nice standard Blu-ray. The film looks and sounds very good. I highly recommend seeing this entertaining and family-friendly film.

Ready for Action?

The John Wick universe expands and the action is top-notch. I won't go into the film itself, rather, I will talk about the picture and audio quality. Both are excellent. This is demo material. This is a crisp and clean 4K HDR presentation (in Dolby Vision). If you have a 4K TV with HDR, this is one disc to own...well, along with the first two films, of course.

A field trip to Europe with his classmates was supposed to provide Peter Parker (Tom Holland) with a well-earned respite from his superhero alter-ego of Spider-Man. But when he's recruited by superspy Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Spidey is soon back on the job and teaming up with the InchMysterioInch-us Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal)-apparently a hero from an alternate universe-for a dangerous mission that may not be what it appears. Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei co-star in this fun-filled Marvel sequel.

Another Spider-Man Hit
on December 24, 2019

I wasn't sure that taking Spider-Man away from NYC would work, but I was wrong. I had a blast watching this film. I won't get into the plot because I feel the less you know, the better.
The 4K HDR presentation here (in Dolby Vision) is amazing. I can confidently say it was shot digitally without even looking it up. There is no film grain to be found on this disc...and I do like film grain, actually. But this disc provides a clean, crisp 4K image. Detail is abundant. Plenty of color and high contrast...it's a real treat to watch. The sound quality is no slouch, either. The Dolby Atmos track will have you in the middle of the action. When Mysterio is talking you hear his voice above you in some scenes.
This is one to definitely add to your 4K collection. Oh, and I love the 4K slipcover. Very nice!

A Force of the Future

RoboCop stands the test of time. It was a mega-hit in the 80s. I grew up having seen this film multiple times, but I had not seen it in years. Then, a couple of years ago, I watched it on Blu-ray. I was mesmerized. I had forgotten so much about the film. A few key scenes stuck with me, of course, but I felt as though I were seeing much of it for the first time. The slow reveal of RoboCop just wouldn't be handled that way today, IMO. The build-up was great. Peter Weller did an amazing job and the special effects team did some amazing work that holds up today. Sure, ED-209 is brought to life using stop-motion, but in this Arrow release, it looks less jarring to me than it did on that original Blu-ray.
Speaking of Arrow, they have done an amazing job on the RoboCop transfer. I understand that this was mastered from a 4K scan of the film. So, one can imagine that a 4K UHD release is coming in the future. Despite this being a 1080p Blu-ray in SDR, it just looks amazing. The detail from the 4K scan is definitely there. There is a fine layer of film grain and I felt like I was sitting in the movie theater watching a beautifully projected film image. It's absolutely beautiful.
There are two discs and you get the theatrical and the director's cut, as well as the TV cut. There are also tons of extras. And the packaging is excellent, as well. Plus, there is a booklet with set photos and short essays on RoboCop's difficult journey to the big and small screens. The Steelbook is beautiful with the original poster art on the front. This is the first Arrow release to be added to my collection and I can see why the company's releases are so revered. The quality is outstanding.

A Lot of Fun

I originally saw this on HBO. My expectations were low knowing that it was not a box office hit, but with Peter Jackson's involvement and knowing about the rolling cities concept, I wanted to check it out. Let's say that it subverted a lot of my expectations. There are diverse characters and amazing special effects shots in the film. I actually loved it. So, I had to see it in 4K with HDR. And...WOW! This thing pops in HDR. If you missed this one, see it. If you have a 4K TV that supports HDR, see this in HDR.

Great 4K Presentation for Ho-Hum Sequel
on December 13, 2019
Posted by: IndyTim

First, I'll say that this is a fantastic 4K disc. I was impressed from the very first scene. This is a great-looking disc, for sure. Audio is pretty solid, as well.
As for the film, it was the sequel we probably didn't need, to be honest. I think Forky is a great addition to the Toy Story characters, and his story and purpose is one worth exploring. But I feel like the rest of the plot was a bit weak, as if the creators had a story to tell regarding Forky, but had to fill in the run-time somehow. And that's why I feel the film suffers a bit because the B storyline isn't that strong.
I had hoped that when Woody and Forky were out on their own that it would turn into a road/buddy film. But it gets into other territory and we end up getting away from our usual cast of Toy Story characters that became so endearing over the other three films. So, while good, it isn't quite up to the caliber one might expect.

Epic Film and 4K Presentation
on December 13, 2019
Posted by: IndyTim

The Patriot on 4K UHD Blu-ray is simply stunning. I had only seen the film once before in HD and the 4K presentation is absolutely a gorgeous upgrade. There is a fine layer of film grain here, but the detail and depth of the picture puts you in the middle of the action whether it be in the farmlands, inside the tents, or on the battlefields. I saw no banding or artifacts watching this on my LG OLED. The scenes in the swamps with the blue hue are so clean and every sunrise or sunset on the prairies is just stunning. The fires are lush with reds and oranges that give off an intensity without being blown out or losing detail. This is an epic film with the run-time to match. It looks great here.

Amazing special effects and a furry sense of humor highlight this Joe Dante scareshow about L.A. TV anchorwoman Karen White (Dee Wallace), who after a terrifying event, goes on vacation at the Colony, a remote California rest resort. Once there, White finds the Colony is home to a host of strange characters, who all seem to be vicious werewolves. John Sayles loosely adapted the Gary Brandner novel; with Christopher Stone, Patrick Macnee, Kevin McCarthy, John Carradine. 91 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English.

Worth the upgrade to 4K!
By IndyTim
Absolutely worth the upgrade to 4K. I have the previous Blu-ray from Scream Factory and I wasn't sure a 4K upgrade would benefit this film much. Boy, was I wrong. The picture is very pleasing. Film grain is intact but not heavy. The reds and lights of the opening scene pop and create a picture with more depth. Details can be seen in faces, clothing, and the effects. Oh, the effects. Though little of the werewolves is shown, what we get looks amazing and the transformation scene has never been more grotesque. The previous Blu-ray is included and it has loads of very interesting special features that I also thoroughly enjoyed after watching the film. The Howling is a classic. Buy it!

I got the slipcover, but I was in the store. Currently, all issued should have the slip. The wrapping is over the slipcover. At some point they might stop issuing slipcovers, but they are on the early runs out there now. So, even ordering online you should receive one.

Many have stated the the control panel is hard to see because it is not backlit. Has this problem been remedied with the newest model?

I can see the panel just fine, but I turn the light on when using the washer and dryer. That said, there are lights on the unit, but it isn't fully illuminated for use in the dark.

Is this unit capable of converting DTS signals to Dolby Digital 5.1?

I do not believe so. I seem to recall that I had a Samsung Blu-ray player years ago (maybe the F7500) that would do this.

Does this player have an option where you can change the screen size? I HATE letterbox.

Do any disc players do this? Every TV from the past several years has several built-in 'zoom' functions. So, use those. I see no such options in the player's manual.

No. The app selection isn't very broad. I don't even use them, and I recommend a dedicated streaming box over the player's apps.
