A funny family horror-comedy with charming puppetry! Joe Dante's wickedly funny family horror-comedy Gremlins (1984) is a witty satire on American culture and behavior through the eyes of a little creature named Gizmo. Gremlins takes American movies, music, television, food, school, police, family, holidays, consumerism, and banking then throws them in a microwave. Chris Columbus' script is filled with great jokes for the parents that your children need not understand, while there is plenty of cute material for the kids. Joe Dante and Chris Columbus create a dynamic duo of deadly disasters and delightful parody of American society. The dog Barney just steals the show. He's a very expressive little dog that reacts to the puppets in front of him in an adorable way. The first Mogwai Gizmo is an articulate puppet, who is likewise adorable. His singing, mumbling, speaking, and motion make Gizmo one of cinema's greatest puppets. All the Gremlins are pretty impressive from a technical viewpoint as they move and behavior so humanlike. Anyways, Barney the dog and Gizmo the Mogwai are resplendent aspects to Gremlins' overall charm. Dante's direction is slick with neat mid shots and fast cuts to keep the audience believing that the Gremlins are real. The cute Mogwai are shot in a way that they look better in the dark, dry, and not eating too much with their little mouths. Dante makes great use of fake snow falling, large city sets, a hand painted background painting, realistic puppets, moody lighting, atmospheric fog, excessive random toys and detailed props, and mini models for destructive purposes. Dante brings a charm to Gremlins as everything feels lovingly crafted for the movie and it shows. Zach Galligan is surprisingly endearing and likable as the lead Billy. I love the scene where he asks out Phoebe Cates. Hoyt Axton is funny as a failed inventor, yet decent father figure named Rand. Frances Lee McCain is sweet and cool as Billy's mother Lynn. Phoebe Cates is adorable as Billy's love interest and a hater of Christmas named Kate. Her monologue about her father is actually rather gripping and moving despite the ridiculous premise. Belinda Balaski is really innocent and moving in a supporting actress role as a poor mother trying to make her rent payments named Mrs. Harris. Michael Winslow did many vocal sound effects for the Mogwai. Howie Mandel even voices Gizmo! John Louie is immediately intriguing as the young Chinese boy desperate for cash. I adore the performance from Keye Luke as Grandfather. His mystique and gravitas add a lot to Gremlins. He even states the message of Gremlins to the audience directly just in case you didn't get it. Judge Reinhold has a supporting role as the sleazy and conservative Gerald. Jonathan Banks, of Breaking Bad fame, even has a neat role as the scared officer Deputy Brent. Scott Brady is funny as the skeptical Sheriff. A young Corey Feldman plays around for some laughs as Pete. Polly Holliday is cruel and convincing as Mrs. Deagle. Dick Miller and Jackie Joseph are really fun as Mr. and Mrs. Futterman. I really like the science teacher Hanson out of his element as portrayed by the spirited energy of Glynn Turman. Jerry Goldsmith's score is fun and light-hearted with enough energy and darkness for a horror movie theme. You feel the Spielberg vibe from the music to the child friendly comedy. Sure it slows down in the second half due to the story being mostly done and chaos ensues, but it's an enjoyably wild ride. Gremlins gives satire for adults and laughs for children. It's a triumph of Joe Dante's visionary direction and Chris Columbus' witty screenwriting. History will show that Gremlins is Joe Dante's greatest film and a wonderful family film!

This is an incredible movie that keeps you hooked from the opening scenes. The humor is smart, but never too over-saturated, the characters are funny but also have emotional depth, and its got zombies! Real fun movie that is easily one of my favorites of all time.

This movie was phenomenal! The beauty put into making the pride lands. All the characters had much more dialog and personality put into the characters. This movie has been on repeat in my house ever since it came out on video. I only wish I had a time machine so I could go back and watch it in theaters. I didn't do that because I have been so disappointed with all of the previous live-action remakes. As far as the previous live-action remakes go, the most enjoyable one had been Maleficient, but still I did not like it because it changed the story of Sleeping Beauty way too much. It completely made a mockery of Prince Philip's character who had been the hero in Sleeping Beauty. Cinderella was too different from the cartoon. Beauty and the Beast was decent but Emma Watson was miscast (she cannot sing) and so that bothered me and took me out of the film. All of that being said I had zero expectations going into Aladdin when I rented it out of boredom. It blew me away. Will Smith does not disappoint, he is hilarious. Hot zaddy Jafar plays Jafar so creepy and insecure that you almost forget how good-looking Marwan Kenzari is. Naomi Scott as Jasmine is a dream. She is picture perfect in every scene, with every turn of her head, she talks like a Disney Princess and her singing voice is superb. Mena Massoud was perfection through and through. He sang like the cartoon, and he was just as charming with his perfect smile and perfect dimple - he truly looks like he was created in a Disney lab and like he was born to play this role. I'm a forever fan of Mena Massoud now. The audience score for this movie is the true score. I don't understand the critics. I have read all of the reviews and a common theme with that bad reviews are that critics seem to be annoyed with Guy Ritchie and the fact that he was probably paid a great deal to make the movie, and the fact that Disney ended up making a ton of money on the movie. I don't understand what money and business have to do with one's ability to enjoy a fun fairytale. I watched the cartoon again straight away after seeing the live action remake. I didn't think it was possible, but I now like the remake anymore. Another common theme in bad reviews was that Will Smith is not Robin Williams. Well, this is not a critique of the film, rather, it is just a plain and simple fact, so I don't count that as an actual criticism. Another things bad reviewers say is that the CGI in the movie was bad. Well I'm sorry but I disagree. Yes the genie looks better as a cartoon, but the whole thing being make-believe will obviously work better in animation. We cannot have animation alongisde real people a la "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" nowadays because it would look cheap. And so they have to create a CGI genie. and a CGI magic carpet. And the thing is, it's one thing to criticize a CGI explosion because you can compare it to a real-life explosion and say it looks fake. But there is no such thing as a magic carpet and no such thing as a genie in a lamp, so I think that getting hung up on the CGI of it is just the wrong approach. If you are going to watch this movie, then allow yourself to fall for it a little bit. It's magic, so just accept it and enjoy. This is officially my new favorite movie and I hope Disney learns something and makes better remakes (I'm hoping Little Mermaid will be as good as Aladdin). Also hopeful for an Aladdin sequel.

I love Pixar films, and it's hard to pick a favorite, because every film the studio has made has really stood out, but if you're wondering, Ratatouille continues the tradition of the studio to release quality films, and are a studio that have only made one lacking picture. Here, we have a film that is beautifully made, tells a simple, yet thoroughly engaging story that is never dull, and always amusing. Ratatouille works well, and is a picture that is brilliantly directed and is a film that will appeal to viewers of all ages. This is a superb animated feature, one that is yet another fine addition to Pixar's outstanding catalogue of great movies. If you want a fun, entertaining animated film, Ratatouille is a solid and safe bet to watch, as it has all the key elements that have made Pixar's films something to behold.
