an underappreciated gem

A much neglected masterpiece. Nicole Kidman's performance deserved at least one Oscar.
Everyone else delivers fine performances, especially Iliana Douglas, whose closing ice dance
is one of the most hilarious moments on film.

Endearing mix of comedy and drama also stars Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson, and Sally Field as Mama Gump. 141 min. Life is like a bunch of chocolates

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also has another Tom Hanks gem to his credit, "Cast Away", this movie is one of my all time favorites in any genre. A drama, a comedy, a tear-jerker, it is a movie of many genres rolled up into one. A simple man, an innocent on the loose, an idiot savant in one of the most turbulent eras in our nations history, Forrest Gump never waivers in his moral integrity and manages to touch and influence the lives of many - famous and infamous. He is physically handicapped, but becomes an athlete of renown. He has sub-par intelligence but manages a college degree, becomes a decorated soldier in Vietnam, and makes a fortune in the shrimping business. A friendless child (except for Jenny) he develops deep friendships, including Bubba (Mykelti Williamson) a black soldier who indoctrinates him into the shrimping business; Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise in one of his best roles) who Forrest looks up to as a role model even when Dan becomes bitter after losing his legs in combat; and he finally wins the love of the wayward childhood friend, Jenny (Robin Wright Penn, also in one of her best roles). Tom Hanks as Forrest is extraordinary...he has so many fine performances, its hard to say this is his best, but it is my personal favorite. In summary, this film is a masterpiece...watch it once or a hundred times, you will always enjoy it. And remember..."life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get."

Classic SciFi

There were multiple remakes of this film but, for my dollar, this is still the best.
Here's the scoop. Dr. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) returns to to his practice in Santa Mira after being away at a conference. Something is afoot. People are saying that close friends and family they've known forever are not their friends and family. A backlog of patient appointments dries up and he's left scratching his head. He runs into an old flame (Dana Wynter) and, as the two try to rekindle their relationships, other odd things begin to happen that get them to realize something very serious is going on.
This film sports a very efficient script by Daniel Mainwaring as well as direction from veteran Don Siegel. The questions are laid out very early on and the clues build to a startling conclusion which then segues into the pair trying to figure out how to both escape the problem as well as raise the warning. This all builds to a frightening and feverish pitch. What starts out slow and easy on soft sunny days speeds up and turns dark with sharp, ugly shadows.

Classic Comedy

If you like old movies (not computerized junk) an enjoy a good laugh then you should watch this movie. Lucy and Ricki were a great pair and had that comedic timing which made you laugh at the dumbest things. No nudes, sex or foul language just plain simple comedy. If you haven't watched this in ages it is worth the $3.00 to rent. It certainly took my mind off of everything that is going on in the world right now. Thank you Lucy and Ricki.

FUN!!!

I mostly wanted this movie for the great comic performance of Bruce Willis. He is so talented, he can play any role and be so convincing. In this one of the hyper sensitive husband of Meryl Streep, who is great as always, and the pawn of Goldie Hawn, also excellent in her role, he is a wonder to behold. It is hard to believe this is the same actor who so successfully played John Mclane in Die Hard. He is hysterical in the role and can cheer you up in this comedy if you have a blue day. The special effects are superb and Ingrid Bergman;s daughter Isabella Rossellini, plays the role as the dream maker who can make your wishes come true, is excellent also. Have fun and enjoy this great comedy with three of our biggest stars, but Bruce steals it.

If you're like me (heaven forbid) you've seen this movie a hundred times, either on VHS, or finally through the 'miracle' of DVD. I am here to testify that the blu-ray BLOWS THE DVD AWAY. I saw details I have NEVER seen before on my first watch of the blu-ray. The film simply looks magnificent. So if you're on the fence about upgrading from DVD, don't be. Buying this will be the most scathingly brilliant thing you've ever done. PS the Blu-ray is WIDESCREEN whereas the old DVD was 4:3 or whatever 'square' format is.

a modern Cinderella

I owned Pretty Woman on vhs. I've played it often enough to the point to where it started to degrade. I realized I needed to upgrade to a dvd or blu-ray disc. I love how it is the exact same as my vhs and was satisfied that it was. Though, the only downside to the blu-ray disc is that it doesn't have the deleted scenes that my vhs had at the end of it. The menu is gorgeous to look at.
Spoilers may be after this point.
Pretty Woman is about a call girl who meets a rich man and they fall in love. Edward is lost driving and he stops in a sketchy place. Vivian works her thing, but Edward only just needed directions to his hotel. Vivian guides the way (the human gps). Edward needed a date and propositions Vivian to be with her six or seven days. During the week, their feelings grow. Yet, there were some stumbling blocks for Vivian to fit into the rich lifestyle. She needed an outfit and shopkeepers didn't want to have anything to do with her. A kind hotel manager, Barney, aids in her plight (the fairy godmother or should I say godfather of the movie). Philip is a piece of work and could be seen as the villain of the movie. At the end as most fairy tales go, they live happily ever after or at least we hope they do. If you have never seen Pretty Woman you should.

Helen Mirren, omg, how fab. This was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Twists and turns and then you think you know the end, the twist, the ringer. But you don’t!!!!!

the original is back!

The other reviewers are right -- the Blu-Ray really IS the original theatrical version!!! I was skeptical, but thought I'd take a chance since this was one of my favorite movies of the 1990s (and often quoted when I worked in a music store in my late teens). The remix version was just awful, so I'm quite happy to be able to enjoy this movie again!
If you've been searching for the original version, here it is!

a new holiday classic

The central theme of this movie is unrequited love and how four people learn to fall in love again. Nancy Meyers's film is impeccably crafted to deliver everything you expect in a holiday movie. The amazing cast gives heartwarming performances. As usual, Meyers's dialogue is at once witty and pithy. From the beginning scenes where Kate Winslet's emotion-filled character Iris discovers the love of her life (Jasper played by Rufus Sewell) is engaged to someone else and the Cameron Diaz character Amanda admits to live-in boyfriend (Edward Burns) of not being able to feel anything or to cry, you know their lives are destined to become intwined. When they decide to swap houses across the ocean at Christmas, the stage is set for chance encounters and romantic fun. From Beverly Hills, California to Surrey, England, the locations are perfect for holiday dreams. Gorgeous Jude Law shows up at the charming English cottage after Amanda arrives and the incomparable Jack Black finds Iris at her vacation swap Hollywood mansion. As each of the characters discovers something delightfully new about themselves, they are swept up with each other, and falling in love. What else could you want in a Christmas movie?? Bring on the eggnog and the Christmas cookies! Indulge!
