Big budget game with a heavy focus on narrative

If nothing else, Detroit Become Human gets points for originality. Quantic Dreams stands out for creating yet another game that emphasizes storytelling over shooting, looting, hacking, and slashing.
The gameplay is relatively simplistic - you walk around, interact with people and objects, and make choices. During more intense scenes, you'll participate in quick time events. Detroit wins out over Telltale's Walking Dead games for me due to higher presentation value and a vastly greater array of choices.
Here, your choices feel like they really do matter, and after each chapter, you get to see how many ways your decisions could have potentially played out. It's a novel way to show to the player how many options they had and greatly increases the replay value. Your choices have an impact on what happens as well as your relationship with other characters. After some types of decisions, you see immediately whether your choice had a positive or negative effect on another character's opinion of you, keeping you on your toes and incentivized to make the best decision possible. It's not so cut and dry though, with decisions often being perceived well by some and not so well by others, again opening the door to more viable gameplay options.
Compare this game to, say, Heavy Rain back on the PS3 and the difference in budget is abundantly apparent. The graphics are impressive, and this pays off greatly for facial expressions - paramount for emotional investment and giving things an overall movie-like quality.
The title easily betrays the somewhat basic premise of androids becoming more human, but it's unfair to say the game is derivative for this. Playing as 3 separate characters who each have their own highly unique playstyles and stories is keeps things fresh, and each story is engaging in its own way.
"Playable movie" is an overly simplistic way of viewing this game and doesn't speak to the fantastic narrative and ocean of choices it provides. This is Quantic Dreams' best work yet.

A rewarding challenge

Dark Souls has been thrown around as one of the most impactful games of its time, and rightfully so. Nowadays, if a game features third person melee combat against challenging opponents, it'll probably be compared to Dark Souls.
I didn't play the original when it first came out, but this remastering for the PS4 still holds up incredibly well, even compared to modern standards. The framerate was pretty consistent at 60fps, and I believe the Estus Flask shortcut button is a new (but welcome) addition.
The level design is often praised, and for good reason. It was fun to unlock shortcuts between areas and to see how they connected to each other. There's plenty of lore here for those interested enough to dissect it all. The basic premise is simple enough but the focus isn't so much on story as it is on the satisfyingly unforgivable combat. Tough but fair is the idea here, with all the souls you've collected dropped upon death, requiring you to pick them back up if you want them back. I enjoyed having to decide between acquiring new skills, upgrading equipment, or increasing my stats using the souls I'd earned.
One minor note is how powerful dodge rolls are - you are invincible in the small animation window of rolls which can be used to great effect during enemy encounters. This honestly rewards timing more than skill, but I can't complain too much; this mechanic helped me through the game after all.

I needed some earphones at a low cost but wanted to make sure they'd be comfortable and last if possible. These JVC ones have lasted for over a year and a half, so mission well accomplished.
The wires are pretty sturdy and even after a year of usage, the earphones show no sign of damage. Highly recommend.

Adrenaline-fueled story with some frustrations
on January 1, 2020

If you're looking for some mindless fun to unwind after a long day, Doom is the better choice. But if you're in for tight shooting mechanics and a genuinely engaging story, Wolfenstein 2 delivers. I don't remember much from the first Wolfenstein apart from a few scenes, but this sequel is full of memorable levels and story beats. Be warned, however, that it's not a game for the squeamish. The first game was most definitely violent, but Wolfenstein 2 kicks it up a bit further even.
So why the 3 stars? I wasn't a huge fan of the frequent returns to bases and then having to navigate to the next person who had my mission. They attempt to pad out the playtime with barebones side missions that have you assassinating commanders in confined sections of levels you've already completed, with very little payoff. Stealth was my biggest source of frustration. The very second you're detected, stealth goes out the window for that encounter permanently. Also, the ridiculously large sightlines enemies have on you from all directions makes it quite difficult to stealth for more than a few seconds before someone calls you out. I would have loved to stealth more often because this game is doable but brutal. I had to lower the difficult to Easy because of how unforgiving it is, and even then, I was still put to the challenge.
Overall, I would recommend this for how great the pacing and writing is, paired with amazing levels spanning a multitude of locations. Just lower your expectations going in, and you'll be in for a great time, and excited for the third entry to come out when all is said and done.

A great Bethesda-style game by Obsidian

Outer Worlds wears its Fallout influence on its sleeve without ever being afraid to be its own thing. The combat isn't the most innovative, but it's still quite engaging. The art style is vibrant. But the main selling point for me is the writing. Having well-written dialogue choices (plus a good number of choices to boot) was a thing I didn't know I'd been missing before playing this game. Highly recommended for fans of shooters, good writing, and games that ooze personality and humor.

A bit more costly but feels like quality

I needed another charger for my phone and wanted to make sure it'd last as long as my new phone would. This one feels like it's made from quality materials. On top of that it charges as fast as the one that came with my phone and has a longer cord. It's a bit pricey compared to other options, but I'm happy with my purchase.

Sleek, responsive, affordable

I'm not the type of consumer who needs the latest and greatest, but at the same time, I've historically always gotten some lower-end phone from brands few people have even heard of. I decided to spring for something a bit higher end without breaking the bank and the Pixel 3a meets that need. Priced at roughly $400, this phone is much more affordable than your standard flagship phone and feels high-end. It's got a sleek look and feel, runs on Android Pie, and takes great pictures. My only minor gripe is that I found it to be perhaps a bit too sleek and up until I bought a case for it, I was always very fearful of dropping and damaging it. It was difficult to pick up and easy to drop if I wasn't being careful. Definitely buy a case for this ASAP.

Dive into the seedy underground of organized crime in Sega's Yakuza 0 standard edition for the PlayStation 4. Set in 1988 Japan, this third-person action adventure game puts you in the middle of a gang war between two mob families. Sega's Yakuza 0 is an open-world crime spree where you fight your way through the story at your own pace.

Action, laughs, and a lot of heart

This was my first game in the Yakuza series, and after playing it, I would say it's a pretty good entry point for anyone else who hadn't played the games released earlier.
The biggest selling point here is the level of quirkiness you simply don't get from big-budget North American games. The trend last generation and for much of this current one has been to tell a deathly serious story with somber main characters. It's refreshing to see a healthy dose of humor sprinkled throughout an at-times serious story.
There's plenty to like here in terms of side content, all guaranteed to have that signature Japanese charm. I will say that combat feels somewhat loose and unrefined, especially coming off of triple-A games. However, that's just a small part of this overall package.

Finally a great Spider-Man game
on June 19, 2019
Posted by: surlysurely
Verified Purchase:Yes
I'm sure many people will agree that before now, the last great Spider-Man game was Spider-Man 2 back during the old PS2 days. Mostly, it'd be due to the fantastic web-swinging mechanics because I can't remember anything else I truly enjoyed about that game.
Enter this generation's own entry into the franchise, which has great web-swinging in addition to engaging combat and a gripping story. Traversal, though not as mechanically complex as the PS2 game's, does have something of a skill ceiling. This is more evident when playing through the few trials. The important thing is swinging feels and looks great in action. Combat is similar to the Arkham games but has a faster pace with more options. And lastly the story is original with the level of emotional investment we've come to expect from quality Sony exclusives.
The only minor gripe I have is the side content feels a bit padded and repetitive. If there were slightly fewer "random" crime events and collectibles, and something more meaningful than "go here, get that" I would've felt more incentivized to do these.
Overall, this will easily be remembered as a Top 5 Sony game this generation.
