Convenient but could be faster

Flawed but definitely worthwhile

I almost didn't buy Days Gone after reading the middling critic reviews for it. One thing I noticed after some time had passed though was a common consensus among the consumers: the game at and beyond the halfway point is a different beast than what it is towards the start.
In other words, those who stick with the game for more than a few hours are rewarded with something solid and thoroughly enjoyable. It was this opinion that swayed me to buy this game, and I have not regretted it since.
I will admit, there are faults: the AI can be laughable, line delivery has mixed results, gunplay is serviceable at best. The greatest offense is the unrewarding exploration; I've had zero incentive to explore when the rewards are only ever more resources, which I'm always topped off on.
However beneath these flaws is an interesting story, relatable characters, a tangible progression system, and fantastic atmosphere. What keeps me coming back is a fun world to drive around on a motorcycle that handles pretty well. I really enjoyed taking on jobs for camps, scavenging for resources, and most of all clearing hordes. It gave a strong apocalyptic vibe - something that I haven't seen much of this generation, despite Days Gone widely (and I think unfairly) being derided as "just another zombie game."
Give this one a shot. There's enough here that sets this apart from other titles in the zombie genre.

From Software hits another one out of the park

From Software is famous (or infamous, depending on your viewpoint) for putting out tough-as-nails games. I thoroughly enjoyed Dark Souls and was extremely excited to test my skills against From's new style of action-RPG. Needless to say, anyone who's used to the Souls series' turtling/armadillo approach to combat will go through an adjustment period to start facing attacks head on, as Sekiro is adamant with punishing passive playstyles. In spite of the obvious difficulty, this game shines with visceral combat and highly memorable boss encounters. There's a huge sense of progression seeing your use of healing items decrease as you learn a boss' patterns. Even aside from the amazing combat, exploration is rewarding, with tons of items to find off the beaten path. Give this one a shot - games that provide this level of fair challenge and mechanical polish are very few and far between.

Somewhat hampered convenience

With past security issues on Sony's digital storefront, I've been wary of entering credit card information through their site. As an alternative, I decided to instead purchase wallet funds through here. I did end up getting the code sent to me, but it was nowhere near as speedy as I was hoping for. The total time I waited was something close to an hour, and - let's be honest - you could go to a physical retailer and come back with the currency card in way less time.
I'd buy this digital code only if you truly don't want to leave the house. Be prepared for a wait after submitting the order.

The Devil you know returns in this brand-new entry in the over-the-top action series. Prepare to get downright demonic with this signature blend of high-octane stylized action and otherworldly and original characters the series is known for. The director Hideaki Itsuno and the core team have returned to create an insane, technically advanced action experience.

DMC5 to me is the Metal Gear Solid 4 of this series. Full of fan service to those of us who've been with the franchise since its PS2 days. Returning characters and the signature over-the-top action make this feel like true DMC through-and-through. Graphics are top-notch, the music is the best it's ever been, and the moment-to-moment gameplay easily surpasses the series' high point seen with DMC3. There's even an interesting story (which honestly has never been very deep in previous entries) that fleshes out the characters a bit more. Easily recommended for DMC fans or anyone who even remotely likes action games.

Easily Worth the Wait

This newest numbered entry into the KH franchise has been long overdue. Having been a huge fan of the second game, I had to manage expectations going into this one. Combat is the greatest selling point, and though I feel as though no game after 2 ever felt quite as refined in this aspect, 3 presents a myriad of options, giving endless variety. The worlds feel large and detailed, the art style is amazingly flexible ( Pirates world and Toy Story world in particular deserve a shout out), and the battles have a great feeling of scale. KH2 remains my favorite, but this was a much-needed worthy ending to the saga.

A traditional yet memorable RPG

Having never played a Dragon Quest game before, I actually went into this one with no expectations. But in the end I walked away incredibly satisfied. I only recently got into turn-based RPGs, and Dragon Quest pulls it off pretty well. Buffs/debuffs and the Pep mechanic lend some strategic depth, and the quality of the attack animations makes playing through enemy encounters a visual treat. The graphical style is quite unique, with characters having a nice, dark CG look that I'm now a huge fan of, and environments somehow managing to look almost photorealistic. The music is a little bit lacking; the level-up and rewards music sound borderline budget-quality. But that's a minor gripe in an otherwise great (and massive) journey.

A familiar return to unfamiliar places

First and foremost, the title "Hitman 2" can be seen as a misnomer. This is - in reality - Hitman Season 2, as that was the original intention when the developers planned out this soft reboot of sorts as an ongoing experience. Anyone expecting a full-fledged sequel out of this title may be disappointed. Granted, there are a few new mechanics compared to 2016's Hitman (the famous briefcase makes a return!), the overall game systems and core gameplay loop are highly similar to that game. This is not necessarily a bad thing and has been pointed out in countless other reviews. But going in with a "season 2" mindset should set expectations accordingly. Anyone who likes to explore huge sandboxes and uncover a staggering number of ways to pull off an assassination will walk away satisfied. Not to mention the in-game rewards for doing so (starting locations, equipment, etc).

With every installment of this Tomb Raider reboot, I've been eager to see Lara become more of the confident and experienced adventurer we're familiar with from her earlier games. I can't say this end to her reboot trilogy pushes her to that goal in a satisfying way, but at the very least the game itself is a (mostly) satisfying experience. Shadow of the Tomb Raider can best be described as Rise plus some. There are a few new movesets to use, but on a graphical and mechanical level, this game is highly reminiscent of its predecessors. I do want to at least give props to the developers for including an interesting way to customize difficulty. Being able to explore without the handholding of white paint markers made it much more rewarding. Ultimately would recommend to anyone who's a fan of the more exploration/puzzle-solving elements.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an experience to remember. The thing that stands out the most is the painstaking attention to detail. Everything - the realistic animations, the highly context-sensitive dialogue, and so much more - reflect the countless hours of effort the developers poured into this game. And luckily, this doesn't come at the expense of the actual core gameplay. This has one of the most engaging and cinematic narrative experiences ever seen in a game, with superb voice acting and motion capture. Many characters are well written and have very distinct yet relatable traits. When it comes to actual mechanics, this game has serviceable cover-based shooting, with the plethora of weapon choices, ammunition types, and realistic cocking of guns elevating firefights. Enough can't be said about the graphics. The lighting alone is worth mention, lending a photorealistic quality to the already stunning and detailed environments. All of these aspects come together to form an unforgettable experience that looks and feels great. It's not perfect, but the multitude of goods vastly outweigh the bads.
