The 4K BluRay version was very good. I didn't love the story and it was one of my least favorite recent Jurassic film. Others may disagree, but it just didn't float my boat.

In Spite of an Initial Hiccup, We Love It!

This TV more than exceeded my expectations. At $2000 with free delivery, installation, 0% financing for 2 years and a 14 day return policy, it seemed like a no-brainer. So, while none of these 98 inch units were on display anywhere near me to check out before hand, I decided to go for it.
It arrived on time and the Geek guys did a fine job of mounting the massive unit on my wall with the appropriate mount that I provided. They checked to make sure it turned on and then left, leaving the rest for me to figure out. So, I spent that afternoon learning about my new TV and the Google operating system that manages it. After some tinkering, I got the picture to look absolutely stunning. In fact, it far out performs my 82 inch Samsung Q70r QLED in most respects.
First off, the mere size of it is overwhelming visually. The colors are fabulous and I find the contrast between light and dark to be excellent, providing a certain depth of field that is beautiful. Blacks are pretty black and with the picture being cast over such a large surface, it seems plenty bright enough too. In fact, most of the time I have the Brightness set to 75/100 and the Contrast at 90/100 in Movie mode. As with my Q70, brightness suffers some in HDR, but it does adjust to that to the degree possible. That is true with Dolby Vision as well. I am not a big fan of HDR in any case, so at times I just turn it off and the picture looks fine without it.
I highly recommend spending some time with all of the various available settings to settle on a picture that is most satisfying to you, as it does offer a lot of visual options to choose from. Moreover, the sharpness and clarity provided by this unit is truly impressive, even from my cable box feed of broadcast TV shows and sports. 4K apps are even more amazing.
I do not have much to say about the internal speakers as I have a 5.1.4 Vizio Soundbar to complete the immersive visual and audio package. Unfortunately, from the beginning I had problems with the TCL not passing thru DD, DD+ or Atmos via ARC. In fact, the only audio detected on my Vizio app from the TV was LPCM, which while high quality, is only stereo.
I contacted TCL Support and over the next month they worked hard to find the problem. In the end, they sent out a local independent technician to install a complete new set of innards for my unit. I mean they replaced every electronic piece inside that beast except for the panel itself. They did their job quickly and efficiently, checking to make sure that it fired up before they left.
While it was a lengthy process, most of the TCL Support folks I worked with were pleasant, courteous and generally knowledgeable. After providing camera shots and videos of the issue, the case was escalated to the next Level and that Rep authorized the repair after some more investigation. After a bit more assistance following the repair, the Soundbar and the TV are now in sync and the smile has grown even bigger on my face. No more LPCM, but happily Dolby Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and Atmos as appropriate.
I did my own research during this process and I did not find anyone else having the problem I encountered. Accordingly, I am assuming it was an isolated problem and not at all symptomatic of the S5 in general. The fact that TCL worked long and hard to resolve my issue is a tribute to their emergence as a significant player in the US mid-TV market with technology that is becoming top notch at reasonable prices. Their support in my case was pretty top notch as well.
Lastly, in no way does this TV feel, look, sound or act like a low-end product. With its current generation Direct LED Backlit panel and its amazing next gen processor, it compensates dramatically for its lack of local dimming and other QLED technologies to the point that they are not missed in normal viewing. In any case, other 98 inch TVs with those technologies cost at least double what this TCL did, not to mention what a 98 inch OLED would cost. So to me there's not even a discussion to be had about comparing a TV experience that is very, very good and affordable to what might be an excellent experience with a TV that I cannot afford. Like I said, a no-brainer!

Beautiful on Blu-Ray
on July 25, 2023
Posted by: BatBoy65
One of my all time favorites, Nevada Smith, arrived the other day in it's newly remastered Blu-Ray form. Happy Birthday for me!
The video looks good, best I've seen for this film in any format. They remastered it in 4K, but this release is just HD in 1080P. Still, way better than any previous version and most scenes are colorful and rich in texture. Closeups are great and even the darker scenes play well. A few of the views of the distant landscape/blue sky in the beginning remain a bit grainy, but hardly an issue. I have been advised that depending on sales, they may release a 4K version either on disc or via a streaming service at a later date. Being an older film, that's pretty common these days as UHD discs are costly to produce and distribute.
The audio was cleaned up as well, and is presented in DTS HD Master Audio 2 Channel. Nothing over the top, but the musical score sounds wonderful given it's limitation.
The cast is fantastic. The acting is fabulous. The score is great. The locations are amazing. The story touches your heart and I both love and hate it when it comes to the end. Of course, the Nevada Smith character appears in the later film The Carpetbaggers, but that film has little resemblance to this one.
This story evolves rapidly from the start. You quickly get past that the lead is supposed to be a teenager who is played by 35 year old McQueen. Surprisingly, they didn't do anything to "young him up" cosmetically in the beginning, or try the old switcheroo with a younger actor during the early scenes. But McQueen's acting and the situations he faces make you forget about the age factor fairly early on. His time with Mr. Cord really turned the corner for me with that. I do get however that this may have been a deal breaker for some other viewers.
I was hoping for a little more from the bonus commentary, but I did pick up a few tidbits. I did learn that Joanna Moore (Tatum O'Neil's mom and Ryan's former wife) played the enticing Angie Coe, although her name was left off the main credits due to some dispute at the time. Too bad for her, but that brief scene with her and Max is my brother's favorite in the whole movie!
Also, it was pointed out that most of the film was shot on location, including the swamp scenes in Louisiana. That was a challenge to film indeed and Suzanne Pleshette reportedly contracted typhoid fever while there. However, she did recover and went on to her wonderful career. Word was that she and McQueen were platonic friends prior to filming and they acknowledged that their love scenes were a challenge for them both. Funny, apparently not an issue for Steve with many of his other leading ladies from what I have heard!
I also heard that George Lucas liked this movie so much that he originally planned to name his new movie character “Indiana Smith.” Somewhere along the way that was dropped and Indiana Jones became the final name for that franchise winner. Good choice, I think!
I can't even guess how many times I have watched this film. I'm still not tired of it and I still get drawn into how good this film is, even with its flaws, after all these years. The Blu-Ray is a distinct improvement in the view-ability of the movie, especially given today's large screen TV's. My 82” Samsung liked it just fine! And, the wonderful main theme song and the whole great score by Alfred Newman happily continues to run through my brain even after the TV has been shut off.
Thousands of folks have written reviews on this film, so I won't belabor my review any further. I just wanted to finally share my thoughts on this wonderful film, now that it is in this beautiful Blu-Ray release. And yes, I will be standing in line for a forthcoming UHD version should it appear one day. Good job, Kino Lorber.

This is a pretty intense and deep movie. That said, plenty of action and an amazing storyline too. Great acting throughout and an interesting treatment of both sides of the atrocities that took place during that era in American history. Excellent visuals and sound. An excellent BluRay for sure.

Way Better than World 1

Fun entertainment...way better than the first "World" movie. I would say that this film is second only to the original Jurassic Park in the series. Excellent visuals and the sound quality rocked our house while also providing for all the subtle sounds too. Interesting story-line and plenty of Dino action too.

Excellent Sound System with Dolby Atmos
on July 18, 2020
Posted by: BatBoy65

My old soundbar finally died so I began a search for a new one. The first really good one I found was the Vizio SB36512-F6. This is the baby brother of the Vizio Atmos family and overall, it is quite excellent. It produces great sound and the Vizio app connected to my Motorola phone without issue. Still, I wanted to try the Granddaddy of the Vizio line in order to see if it was worth the difference in price. I am glad that I did, but that's no cut on the 36 inch model which is quite good in it's own right.
Many people have left reviews on the SB46514, so I won't go over everything already addressed there-in. My bar came fully up-to-date with the latest firmware which corrected many of the issues discussed in the other reviews. Most important of these is that all 4 Height speakers now deliver their own content. There is also a Height Level adjustment to increase/decrease the volume of the Height channels, although it adjusts all 4 at the same time, not independently. However, that does not seem to pose any kind of listening issue as the VIZIO app allows for a lot of customizing of the overall sound profile. While the Vizio remote is hard to read in lower light as others have noted, I hardly ever use it as the smart phone app is excellent and very comprehensive.
I started off using the Movie EQ mode and it is rich and full in it's sound spectrum. However, when using an Atmos source or the Virtual setting, I have found that selecting the Music EQ mode often creates an even more enveloping soundscape, even for movies and TV. Further, the Virtual mode is an excellent substitute for when Atmos is not available. I tested this by comparing the Fifth Element in both HD and UHD versions. The HD version does not have Atmos, but the UHD version does. In my comparison, the Virtual mode kept pace with the Atmos mode very well, with only minor differences noted. It is a really nice addition to watching regular TV and it is nice that Vizio gives you so many optional ways to adjust their soundbar settings.
As hoped for, I have noticed that the extra 12 inches in the length of the 46" unit does provide a bit wider soundstage than does the 36" unit. The massive 10 inch Subwoofer is also a bit of a step up from the one provided with the smaller unit. Again, the 6" one is good, but the 10 incher is just a bit better.
All this works well with my 82" Samsung Q70, although getting Atmos from Netflix remains difficult. However, I don't think that is a soundbar issue, but rather a problem between Netflix and Samsung. In fact, the system has no problem playing Atmos on Amazon Prime selections or from my UHD BluRay player. Sadly, many calls to Netflix have resulted in no help on this whatsoever. In my online searches, it seems that many others have reported the same problem with Netflix and none of it seems related to Vizio's bars.
While the two Vizio units are very close overall, the 46" unit does outperform the 36" unit, but the difference in price should be considered. I was lucky to get my SB46514 as an Open Box, thus cutting the price difference significantly. I should mention that both units are 2018 models and software wise, they operate pretty much identically.
Vizio introduced the SB36514-G6 in 2019 which might be a great compromise between the 2 older models as it has added the 2 rear Height speakers missing in the SB36512. Also, Vizio has announced that newer units are on the way once the pandemic is under control. None of the current models support DTS:X, which upcoming models are supposed to. Not a big deal, especially since the Virtual mode works so well. Still, many of my BluRay's use DTS:X so it would be a nice upgrade if they decide to offer it in a firmware update.
Generally, Vizio support is excellent. If you have an issue, they will work hard to resolve it for you. If they determine that your issue is covered under warranty, they won't hesitate to send you a replacement unit. My Open Box unit did have a problem and the team at Vizio got my new unit to me in just a few days, along with a prepaid return label for the defective unit...sweet.
Finally, I must say that the SB46514 is a really good sound system. I have had component systems and this setup will hold its own with anything in its price category that I have heard and even beyond. The sound is as close to being at a movie theater as anything I have tried. And, the SB36512, isn't too far behind in that regard. Either way, Vizio provides truly enjoyable solutions to your home audio needs. Now, I just need to find a new home for my 36 inch unit!

CAN 4K VIDEO AND SOUND PLAY THROUGH THE SOUNDBAR?

Yes it can. There is 1 HDMI input that will support the 4K passthrough. It also has an HDMI ARC input that connects ARC enabled TV's to the other sources. I use the HDMI input for my UHD BluRay player and all other connections from the TV via ARC.

Does this unit up-convert non ATMOS signals so it can utilize all the speakers and simulate ATMOS??

Yes, the Vizio Atmos units offer a simulated Atmos function that is actually quite good, excellent in fact. You can control that with the Height Speaker adjustment on the remote or from the App. You can choose those speakers to be either On, Off or Virtual. You would use the On mode when Dolby Atmos is available from the source. The Off mode cuts off the Height speakers completely, which I rarely use, but a "nice to have" function I suppose. The Virtual mode does a great job of emulating the effects offered with Atmos. In fact, depending on the source, Virtual can actually rival true Atmos. I use Virtual all the time and it is particularly effective when the source is in a 5.1 format. Even TV shows sound great with Virtual, but put in an HD BluRay like Saving Private Ryan and you will be ducking from the bullets flying overhead!
