Never mess with an assassin's dog
on June 23, 2023

You'll cheer, you'll cringe, and you'll laugh as this an extra-long and indulgent installment of John Wick's World Tour of Death sees Keanu tear his way through more infinite bad guys in neon-lit settings with all the sick stunts and bone-dry quips you can hope for, along with yet another supporting cast of action movie superstars giving Wick grief at every turn, not the least of which is Donnie Yen doing the Zatoichi act just as expertly as he did in Rogue One. Is John really and truly out? Will the High Table answer for its overreach? Does anybody dare so much as look at the dog the wrong way? Tune in, true believers, same Wick time, same Wick channel!

Never bet against James Cameron

Spare us your cheap jabs and lame jokes, Internet, because the blockbuster event of the year has arrived, and it is indeed THAT film. After introducing us to Pandora in a fairly basic and well-worn story wrapped in sumptuous visuals, Cameron cuts loose big time and expands that world with a much deeper, richer story about parents learning from their children just as much as vice versa - a theme that extends to some unexpected corners of the cast, with new franchise stars in the making that are Jake and Neytiri's brood (including and especially the returning Sigourney Weaver) sure to ignite the most interest in sequels to come. And naturally, the film looks EXQUISITE.

Fantastic restoration of QT's debut

My least favorite of Tarantino's, but the 4K disc looks stellar. The shot of Mr. Orange practicing his commode story in front of the graffiti wall in particular is a beauty.

Lightning should have struck twice

The Rock's here to look menacing and mess up whatever's dumb enough to block his path, and in that, it delivers what it promises, even if being made to feel like several different not-quite-complete movies in one to fit a two-hour window was the price to pay. While it's big on smash-happy action (in populated locations too - fancy that) and never allows itself to get dull, the fights are visually noisy and often undercut by editing a little too rapid, CG with zero sense of weight, and a few requisite jokey-jokes that don't quite hit. On the plus side, for those still worrying about SnyderVerse erasure, this, like all the DCEU's best efforts, was made with fondness for Snyder's JL Trilogy, as there are a number of very obvious visual tributes to it and Zack's stylings in general. There's even, albeit lightly, some addressing of similar thematic threads, namely the legend/public perception vs. the hero's personal reality. So it's not the big dramatic step we may have hoped for so much a tiptoe forward for the directionless DCEU. Is the franchise richer for its existence? I'm leaning on yes, even if I wished for as much flesh in the story as there is flash on the screen.

A touching epilogue to Boseman's MCU journey
on June 10, 2023
Posted by: Josh
Verified Purchase:Yes
With love for the late Chadwick Boseman painted across every inch of the final film, his unfortunate passing offered a unique chance to break from the established formula, and thankfully Ryan Coogler and company were more than up to the challenge. While there's more than enough flash-bang spectacle to go around, including and especially the introduction of new power player Tenoch Huerta as Namor the Sub-Mariner, who I can best describe as the scary version of Patrick Wilson's Ocean Master, Wakanda Forever is far more concerned with the transformative power of grief, and the grim paths one may take in their coping, even in the course of a noble cause or simply basic survival. Like Multiverse of Madness earlier this year and Eternals last November, much more of the director's voice is felt in this entry, and that is only a good sign for the mega-franchise's future.

All hands on deck for a solid sequel!

Who knows why audiences sat on their hands for FURY OF THE GODS, but they're missing out: SHAZAM goes Wrath of the Titans and it's a blast! If the first film was about finding your real family, the second is about fears of growing apart from them and trying to hold on to things either already gone or just not going to last. The wholesome (and sometimes not so wholesome) chemistry between the child and adult Shazamily cast is back and as strong as before, with some surprising bonus entertainment between Jack Dylan Grazer and Djimon Hounsou. And hey, did you groan at the first movie's headless cameo and Levi's Shazam being kind of a dummy even with "The Wisdom of Solomon"? Rejoice, because this film pokes some good-natured at that and more. Ya done good,
Sandberg. And Darla, you're not just a good sister, you may be the BEST sister!

Creed's third round of epicness
on June 10, 2023

Verified Purchase:Yes
Adonis Creed is still chasing old ghosts as he meets his Clubber Lang in another power-swinging installment in the Rocky spinoff series and a more than solid directorial debut for star Michael B. Jordan, who has spoken repeatedly of his anime influences, and it shows in particular stylistic flourishes (especially during the big final showdown) that effectively set it apart from Ryan Coogler and Steven Caple Jr.'s entries. If this is the end of Donnie's story, it goes out on one hell of an uppercut. If Jordan maybe decides there's another story to tell years down the line, perhaps with Donnie's daughter Amara stepping into the ring for some righteous cause, count me in.

Madness never felt so good!
on August 5, 2022

Multiverse of Madness may be "just another Marvel flick" on a script level, and sometimes still can't help but derail a hard moment with a needless gag (namely that flat mid-credits scene), but Sam the Man dares to Evil Dead the heck out of proceedings and elevate it to mountaintop status. Cumberbatch is his usual snidely charming self, and he and Benedict Wong continue working magic with their chemistry, while Elizabeth Olsen is having a ball going full villain, officially making up for the botched WandaVision finale. Rachel McAdams has a more involved role to play this time out and gets to tie off some loose ends from the first film, and Xochitl Gomez makes a fine debut as the latest of the MCU's cast of thousands. But the real star here, even above all the "surprise appearances" is Raimi going all in with his signature energetic camera and horror roots, dishing up a more intense experience than the casual viewer will expect, and huzzah to the Mouse House for letting him.

Same old botched transfer in premium packaging
on June 21, 2022
Posted by: Josh
Verified Purchase:Yes
Sadly, this is the same faulty transfer as the previous one - for those unaware, StudioCanal mistakenly released one half of the 3D conversation (hence all the digital noise reduction) rather than the native 4K remaster, so when they claim it's "approved by James Cameron", it's really only a half-truth - but if they ever finally admit their error and release the real 4K edition, this will be the perfect package to swap the discs into, as Lionsgate continues delivering incredible steelbook designs. Occasional rubbery visuals aside, color and contrast are looking better than on past Blu-rays, most evident when one plays the extended edition and witnesses the change of quality.

A welcome Atmos boost to the home theater

A great option if you're looking to upgrade to an Atmos-enabled setup. Configuration and optimizing can get confusing if your sound knowledge is entry-level and don't know all the terms, but with some online guides you should be able to get by, and with the surround speakers strategically placed, your movies will take on a whole new life, and the immersive rumble in your viewing space will make the purchase worth it.

I have an older LG OLED television that has permanently burnt-in [ad] icon on the screen due to Hulu's yellow disclaimer. I want to ensure that this model isn't subject to the same problem as the older TV.

It's my understanding the risk of burn-in is still present, but running Pixel Refresh on a regular basis can help prevent it (google for a recommended schedule based on your usage).

Vinyl audio has authenticity that digital can~t compete with, but you can~t argue with the convenience of modern wireless speakers either. With the Insignia Bluetooth Stereo Turntable, you can enjoy old school music using the latest technology. The turntable~s manual belt-drive design plays your 33-1/3 and 45 rpm 12-inch records. Its adjustable counterweight and magnet cartridge provide reliable tracking and a rich sound that help you lose yourself in the music. Connect a Bluetooth speaker wirelessly to make your music portable, or plug in your tried-and-true wired speakers with one simple connection. After your record is done playing, the turntable will turn off automatically and the detachable cover shields your turntable when it~s not in use. Music holds a lot of memories, and it can also create new ones. Make them count with this Insignia Bluetooth turntable.

Can I pair this with my favorite blue tooth speaker?

Yes. Just place the speaker in pairing mode, then hold down the Bluetooth button on the turntable until it starts flashing blue and red. It should be paired when it turns solid blue, and you should hear something from the speaker.
