Didn't quite rope me in the same way as Psycho or The Birds, but it's a tense tale on an expertly limited set, and those last fifteen minutes alone were worth the whole runtime, especially that one chilling moment when Raymond Burr looks up into the camera.

Still my favorite Kurosawa, and the 4K restoration looks fantastic; contrast is surprisingly foggy in some sequences, but perhaps that was always the intent. Just for laughs, afterward I popped in my old Blu-ray copy for a quick scene comparison, and it's practically VHS quality next to this remaster.

Matt Reeves really said eff it and delivered the most hard-boiled-detective Batman movie ever, with Robert Pattinson as a Zen Master of brooding, slugging his way through the dirtiest-looking Gotham since Tim Burton slid Michael Keaton into that rubber cowl. Paul Dano meanwhile brings his Prisoners-level unsettling best to The Riddler, whose introduction alone is the stuff of great slasher villains, perhaps coming dead even if not just eclipsing Heath Ledger in instant-legend status. Each of the other major players - Zoe Kravitz's slick Selina, Jeffrey Wright's coolheaded Gordon, and Colin Farrell's slimy Penguin - offer strong support, but the above-all standout may be the new muscle car Batmobile, entering the picture like Christine powered by Godzilla's atomic breath. With Greig Fraser's moody photography, Michael Giacchino's powerhouse score, and more than few of Reeves's trademark fixed-POV shots, this Dark Knight is punching as hard as ever, with, like Nolan's Batman Begins, the promise of much heavier and harder battles to come. BRING. IT. ON.

It's no Shawshank, but I'd probably rank it a solid second among Darabont's King adaptations. It feels its three-hour length, and the apparent messaging that even "good" officers of the law are bound by the rotten system that condemns innocent minorities is, speaking generously, troublesome, but it's fantastically acted throughout, especially by then newcomer Michael Clarke Duncan, may the great chocolate hulk rest in peace.

An invigorating and celebratory dive into Spidey's whole cinematic legacy, paying loving tribute to all the aspects of past iterations you might have loved, merely liked, or even hated, and how they all worked in their own way, regardless whatever "rules" the audience wants to project onto the character or how his story unfolds (ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION, SUPERMAN GATEKEEPERS??), while finally giving Holland's Peter Parker the chance to centerpiece a solo adventure outside the shadow of Iron Man. And all the while, surprise surprise, the jokes by and large DON'T derail the drama. In fact, some of the hardest stuff to grace a Marvel flick since the closing minutes of Infinity War land a couple times here, and it's beautiful. Like Shang-Chi accomplished earlier in the year, this tired and cynical MCU viewer has driven home feeling hopeful for his interest in the franchise's future.

If like me you know very little about distinguishing the quality of turntables and wasted money on decks that risked destroying your records, this one will be a delightful upgrade. Assembling the counterweight is the trickiest part, but once it's out of the way, you have a handsome (albeit quite staticky) unit with convenient controls and Bluetooth capability to blast the music from any enabled speaker you please.

This is how you make a film where self-awareness is PART of the storytelling instead of a distraction from or substitute for it. Like, what DOESN'T this movie comment on? The depressive corporatist grind; the soullessness of franchise cash-ins, nostalgia-baiting, and buzzword marketing; the prison of binary choices; the pitfalls of fanaticism and tribalism; all while reinforcing every theme already covered in the original trilogy and building on Neo and Trinity's story and the fallout of their heroics in a compelling, trippy, and reasonably logical way. And while the film is visual treat throughout, apart from an amazingly chaotic final chase sequence, it sadly drops the ball in the action department, with the fights and shootouts completely lacking the fluidity and finesse of the original saga and more resembling a thousand lesser post-2000s action flicks. But for a film nobody was expecting to exist at all, thematically it absolutely honors its generation- and genre-defining forebears.

Spielberg's artistry meets a classic romantic musical - was there any doubt there'd be some serious magic happening? A vibrant singing adventure highlighted by the rightly award-winning debut of the angelic Rachel Zegler as Maria (and how about that spicy mama Ariana DeBose as Anita? RAWR). The only weak link in the whole affair is sadly the other lead actor Ansel Elgort as Tony, who's serviceable as a singer but a black hole of charisma next to everybody around him.

While it can't help but MCU it up in terms of plot conveniences and mood-killing humor (though I enjoyed the repeated meta-joke about Nat's choice of superhero landing), it mostly delivers on the return to the Winter Soldier flavor I was hoping for, and makes a better Infinity Saga epilogue than Far From Home, not to mention a way better "girl power" MCU film than Captain Marvel. I can applaud how it makes good on its promise to make the Me Too movement part of its central theme, though the effort might have made a lot more impact with a more interesting villain and a lead actress less inclined to praise known predators. Also, I'm down for whatever extended part Florence Pugh has to play in future MCU projects, because she easily walks away with the movie.

It's exactly the movie the director wanted, and should be commended for that much. I wasn't bored, I wasn't insulted (though I am crying foul on some of the casualty choices). It fits snugly in continuity with SS 2016 and BoP, so as expected, no movie erasure is at play. The violence made me laugh a lot more than most of the dialogue-based humor, and the final act especially was a knockout. Character-wise, I'm lukewarm on most of the new people; even the studio-mangled Squad 2016 gave me more to latch onto the first time. Margot-Harley's firmly the best thing about this slice of the franchise.

I have an older LG OLED television that has permanently burnt-in [ad] icon on the screen due to Hulu's yellow disclaimer. I want to ensure that this model isn't subject to the same problem as the older TV.
It's my understanding the risk of burn-in is still present, but running Pixel Refresh on a regular basis can help prevent it (google for a recommended schedule based on your usage).

Can I pair this with my favorite blue tooth speaker?
Yes. Just place the speaker in pairing mode, then hold down the Bluetooth button on the turntable until it starts flashing blue and red. It should be paired when it turns solid blue, and you should hear something from the speaker.
