Who doesn't appreciate a good 2D Metroid game? That's what you get here, plus a couple of new twists. In Metroid Dread, you'll explore the subterranean depths of the planet ZDR while avoiding the E.M.M.I. robots periodically. Samus can obtain her usual array of weapons and techniques over the course of the game (plus a couple new variations on past ones), but there's also a new counter melee attack which is essential for defeating certain enemies. As for the E.M.M.I. robots, they are a pain to avoid...but they only track you within the confines of their designated zones. Thankfully, you'll eventually obtain an Omega Cannon from each area's core to destroy the respective E.M.M.I. that haunts the region. Metroid Dread probably won't trump Super Metroid due to its nostalgia factor and timeless soundtrack, but it holds its own as a new take on the classic formula. The graphics are some of the nicest to ever grace the Switch, most areas are of a respectable size, and there's plenty of hidden items. After the mediocre Other M, it's nice to see Metroid return to its 2D roots!

For the price range, these headphones are pretty good. The sound quality is decent, but the bass is not great. I've had a couple pairs of Sony headphones like these in the past, and all of them lasted several years at least. My only gripe is that the ear pads are made of a cheap material that flakes off easily with extended use, especially if you wear glasses. I much prefer the mesh covering like on the older Skullycandy Uprock headphones. Still, these are great for traveling since they aren't expensive and they fold up nicely.

Doom: Eternal picks up where the previous Doom leaves off, with the Doom Slayer coming to Earth to fend off the demon invasion. This sort of mirrors the plot of the original Doom 2, but the story is much more fleshed-out here. The first-person shooting gameplay is more frantic than ever and will definitely put your skills to the test on the Hurt Me Plenty difficulty or above. Earning your resources back during intense skirmishes requires skillful use of melee executions, the chainsaw, and the new shoulder-mounted flamethrower; you'll need to keep moving constantly in almost every encounter. Most familiar firearms make a return, although some changes have been made in their secondary functions...such as the Super Shotgun now having a grappling hook which can latch onto foes at mid to close range. The campaign is a respectable length and there are lots of secrets to find in each level, so expect to have a guide handy to find them all. The new Battle Mode is a welcome addition too, which allows players to fight as the demons. If you liked the last Doom, you'll enjoy this one.
Experience survival horror like never before in Resident Evil Village. Elevate each desperate fight to survive by showcasing the most realistic and terrifying graphics to date. The all-new title is the eighth major installment in the storied Resident Evil franchise, which established the survival horror genre nearly 25 years ago. The title is currently in development using Capcom~s proprietary RE Engine, used to create vivid gameplay experiences in hit titles such as Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Devil May Cry 5. With hyper-detailed graphics, intense first-person action and masterful storytelling, the terror has never felt more realistic and inescapable. Set a few years after the horrifying events in the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the all-new storyline begins with Ethan Winters and his wife Mia living peacefully in a new location, free from their past nightmares. Just as they are building their new life together, tragedy befalls them once again. Chris Redfield, the legendary hero from the Resident Evil series, is reacquainted with the couple and horribly disrupts their life, spiraling Ethan into chaos. A devastated Ethan finds himself in a remote snow-capped village seeking answers after being thrown into an entirely new nightmare.

Resident Evil: Village is a direct sequel to Resident Evil: Biohazard that was released 4 years ago. Once again you play as Ethan Winters, and it takes place in first-person (I still prefer the third-person style, but hey). Stunningly detailed graphics, solid gunplay, and a "just right" balance of atmosphere and action make this one of the best Resident Evil experiences yet. After the main story, there's plenty of extra weapons to unlock, and The Mercenaries mode even makes a return. The PS4 runs this one surprisingly well. The graphical detail seems identical to the PS5 version, with little to no pop-in of the assets, but...there are definitely some frame-rate dips here and there. I'd say things run at a respectable 40-45 fps most of the time, which is certainly acceptable. Highly recommended for survival horror fans.

The original sci-fi anime classic returns, with both the Blu Ray/4K discs and digital copy included. Ghost In The Shell was first released in 1995 and sort of set the standard for sci-fi anime movies at the time, incorporating adult cyber-punk themes with intelligent dialogue. There's plenty of violence and gratuitous female nudity, so parents should be aware of that. My only gripe is the same one I had when the movie first released...at only about 80 mins, it's kind of short (but this is typical of feature-length anime movies). Still, it's stood the test of time as a cult classic and looks better than ever here. Definitely worth it.
Cruis~n makes its triumphant return to consoles with Cruis~n Blast! The racing classic hasn~t seen a new console entry for more than a decade, but the 2017 arcade hit Cruis~n Blast is finally bringing the series back into the home on Nintendo Switch! The conversion from arcade to Switch was handled by the original game team led by Cruis~n creator Eugene Jarvis, the iconic game developer and creator behind titles like Robotron, Defender, and many other trendsetting arcade classics. I'm pleasantly surprised to see this on the Switch. I think this is the first time Raw Thrills has ever let one of their arcade games get a home port, but I hope this is the beginning of a new trend. Cruis'n Blast is a shallow yet fun arcade racer with simple mechanics that won't stack up against Forza or Gran Turismo, so be aware of that. Drifting and nitro blasts are the order of the day here, and you won't get far against the CPU racers without mastering their use. Note that the AI employs rubber-banding in full force, which is definitely frustrating on the higher difficulties. With its added goodies and alternate takes on the main courses, Cruis'n Blast offers up enough to be worth a purchase. The wacky extra vehicles are a welcome treat (a UFO, a triceratops, a unicorn, and more can be unlocked). A must-buy for arcade fans!

There's lots of action and special effects in Godzilla Vs. Kong, so no worries there...but I have mixed feelings about throwing (spoiler alert) Mechagodzilla into the fray. It feels like that should've been a separate story in its own right. Instead, we get a lot of back and forth between Kong's hollow Earth origin and a subplot explaining Mechagodzilla.
Mechagodzilla serves his purpose in the story by giving Godzilla and Kong a common enemy, which in turn has them agreeing to a truce in the end. However, giving Mechagodzilla so little screen time feels rushed. Regardless, there's still plenty to appreciate here for kaiju fans. Just sit back and enjoy the carnage.
Over 60 years after she first ventured into man's world, Amazon princess Diana (Gal Gadot) lived a quiet pose as a D.C. researcher... until she looked into a legendary stone reputed to grant wishes. The artifact let her restore long-lost love Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) to life-but it also turned colorless colleague Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) into the predatory Cheetah, before falling into the hands of power-mad industrialist Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal). Smash sequel co-stars Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen. 151 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack; English. Two-disc set.

Compared to the first Wonder Woman movie, I found this sequel lacking. Mostly it was the misuse of Cheetah, who's supposed to be one of Wonder Woman's most enduring adversaries. Here she gets pushed into the backround and has very little screen time, at least in her final villain incarnation. Although the core cast of actors do a great job here, the kid they got to play Max Lord's son looks nothing like him and just doesn't appear into it; it kind of ruined the vibe in a couple of scenes.
For fans of the franchise and DC comics in general, I still say it's worth it to pick this one up...just don't set your expectations too high.

I was surprised by this one. Its target audience is obviously the teenage crowd, but I liked it. This could be because Guillermo Del Toro is involved, and he always does justice to creature features. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is based on the books of the same name, and it weaves elements of those short stories into one plot revolving around teenagers in a small town. The story borrows from other horror classics but presents everything in a more teen-friendly fashion. There is some disturbing imagery, so younger kids probably shouldn't see this. It's not perfect, but horror fans young and old should find something to appreciate here.
U.S. Army Ranger Capt. Natalie Artemis (Milla Jovovich) was supposed to be leading an exercise for a UN military force when an interdimensional rift opened-and deposited them into a desert world populated by massive mutated creatures. Their sole hope for finding a way home-or living long enough to do so-lies with the skilled local warrior (Tony Jaa) they pact with for survival. Wheelhouse videogame adaptation from Paul W.S. Anderson co-stars T.I., Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Ron Perlman. 99 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English. Two-disc set.

A military team gets thrust into the Monster Hunter world via an interdimensional portal...a paper-thin excuse for a story, but it works I guess. The majority of the movie is Milla bonding with a native monster hunter and learning how to survive. The problem is, by the time things get kicked into high gear, the whole thing is over (30-45 minutes more would've done wonders to flesh everything out). Some cringey dialogue here and there doesn't do this movie any favors either. The monsters look fantastic and are true to their video game counterparts, but that's about the best thing to take away from the experience. Fans of the games should check it out for fun, but don't expect a masterpiece...it's firmly relegated to the pile of disappointing game-to-movie flops.

The physical release for this game at Best Buy was Dec. 15, 2020. It's been sitting at my local Best Buy store on the shelf for a few weeks. I went to check out and they told me they can't sell it because it doesn't exist in the system. What is going on?
