I'll be honest, I kind of thought the first Zombieland movie was so-so. I loved the humorous take on the zombie pop-culture phenomenon, but it felt just a little too short and lacked something that truly set it apart into the realm of top-shelf movies for me.
Fast-forward 10 years lately and we finally get this sequel. The good news is, this movie doesn't forget its source material in any way and all of the actors reprise their roles. There's plenty of comedic gore and a few new characters, but all I really need to say is this: If you liked the first Zombieland and want more of that universe, you can't go wrong with this one. If you weren't on board with this franchise before, you probably won't find anything new to change your mind either. 4/5 stars from me.

I wasn't pleased with the incomplete package that was vanilla Street Fighter 5. The long load times, omni-present online elements, and shortage of characters/modes with the initial release caused me to boycott it for a few years. It pains me to say this, because I've been a fan for so many years and the core gameplay of SF5 is quite balanced and fun.
Four years later, and Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition is finally the game it always should have been (save for the loading screen ads). There's now over 40 characters, multiple modes (yes, including arcade), and plenty of costumes available from the past season passes. It's just a shame it took this long for a complete game.
If you haven't pulled the trigger on SF5 yet, doing so now is totally justified in my opinion.

While the campaign of Kirby Star Allies is kind of short (clocking in at about 5-8 hours if you take your time), there's no lack of replay value via the extra modes. You can re-visit the campaign in a time attack of sorts with any character, or try out a few other modes that feature mini-games, ect.
This one isn't likely to hold the hardcore gamer's attention for long, as it's a fairly easy game–but that makes it a perfect fit for younger folks. It's accessible fun for all ages.

"Luigi's Mansion 3" takes the formula from the last two games and runs with it. The Ghostbusters-inspired gameplay is better than ever, and the inclusion of Gooigi as a puzzle-solving helper is fun and effective (and provides an excuse for multiplayer to boot). The graphics are simple but well-crafted, making it one of the best looking games on the Switch. Proper use of lighting effects is important in a game like this, and Nintendo nailed it.
This time around, Luigi is saving his friends in a hotel...so calling it "Luigi's Mansion" is a stretch, but we get it. There are a couple of awkward boss fights where I had some minor trouble with the control scheme, but overall I'd give this one high marks. Definitely a contender for Switch game of the year!

"River City Girls" is a spin-off of the "Kunio-Kun" games (known as River City, Renegade, and a few others in the US) featuring the girlfriends of protagonists Kunio & Riki. Anyone familiar with beat-em-ups of old will know what to expect here...1-2 player, 8-way fighting action on-par with "Double Dragon" and "Streets Of Rage". There's an obvious faux pixelated 8-bit / 16-bit aesthetic during gameplay, but the character panels and cutscenes are of a more hi-res anime style.
You play as either Misako or Kyoko as they fight through River City to find their kidnapped boyfriends. You can gain levels and buy items / attacks as you go, adding an RPG element to the mix. It's a short but sweet romp that leaves you clamoring for more, but there are a few extras to unlock that'll keep you replaying–such as the ability to play as both Kunio and Riki once you beat the game.
"River City Girls' feels right at home on the Switch console. It's perfectly playable in both hand-held and docked mode, with only a few minor hiccups in frame-rate. If you dig old-school games, I highly recommend it.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good superhero movie–especially what the last couple of decades have brought us...but the formula is getting kind of tired. Enter "Shazam", which is not quite what I expected...it's a kid-friendly, comedic take on the modern superhero genre, perhaps more akin to "Power Rangers" or "TMNT" than the current Marvel or DC movies.
Just like in the old comic, the titular hero is a pre-teen kid who transforms into an adult superhero whenever he utters the word "Shazam." He's an alternate Superman of sorts who's powers center around electricity.
Those expecting a strong tie-in to the current darker DC movies might find themselves disappointed, but this one is meant for a younger audience. Keep that in mind and you'll probably have a good time with it.

To be honest, I like the Annabelle movies a bit more each time I see them...which is strange considering the over-saturation of "jump-scare" horror movies out there. However, this one seems to rely even more on cheap "boo" tricks rather than gore or demonic terror.
The good thing is, "Annabelle: Homecoming" is just that–supernatural happenings linked to the doll in the Ed & Lorraine household. That adds an interesting layer, as it concerns their daughter and her babysitter as they confront it. It's a mildly enjoyable if not predictable entry to the series, just don't expect too much from it. 3/5 stars.

If you're a veteran of the previous Borderlands games, you can rest assured that this official 3rd incarnation is bigger and better than any of Gearbox's efforts before. More crazy guns, hi-res cell-shaded graphics, improved physics, and loads of humor to boot. The 4 new playable vault hunters all feel natural to the Borderlands universe; they cover a wider variety of class archetypes between their skill trees than ever before. The areas within the core game are sizable and easily surpass those of Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel in scope.
Unfortunately, the story of Borderlands 3 has taken a turn for the worse. Most agree that Tyreen and Troy aren't as strong villains as Handsome Jack was...and I won't waste time posting details or spoilers here, but by the end of the game the virtue-signaling SJWs have taken full control (read: there's lots of forced feminism that artificially plants female characters into positions of power). Borderlands 3's best dialogue and humor firmly take place within the side quests this time.
As of this review, I also must point out that Borderlands 3 has its share of technical issues to iron out. Crashes, inventory glitches, frame-rate stutters (even on Xbox One X) and a laundry list of other small bugs bog down the experience slightly. If Gearbox can polish these problems out, I think Borderlands 3 is set to deliver on more quality looter-shooter action for years to come.

It's good to see SNK producing fighting games again. For years they lagged behind Capcom with low-res sprites and "not-quite there" gameplay (not to mention their stint of almost exclusively producing casino games), but "KOF 14" wowed me and proved they could adapt to today's modern demands.
Enter 2019's "Samurai Showdown", the first official entry in the series in over a decade. It's a return to form for the series...ditching the fast combo gameplay of "Samurai Showdown 6" and focusing more on the block-and-counter mechanics that made the first and second games so prolific. In fact, even the character roster and settings feel like a call-back to the days of old. As per usual, the interface is beautifully decorated with a traditional Japanese tapestry aesthetic.
A fair amount of modes are included. There's Story, which functions as both the narrative and the arcade mode; it features Shizuka as the typical energy-blasting villain to overcome at the end (I'm glad to see an original last boss, and not just Amakusa again). There's also Survival, Training, Time Attack, and Gauntlet, which fill the roles of most everything you'd want offline.
A word of warning, though...the base roster is comprised of 17 characters, which isn't terrible, but it pales in comparison to KOF 14's 40+ fighters. The load times hinder the fun as well. At almost 30 seconds between each match, you'll be waiting a lot...even on a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.
As for myself, I loved the more combo-oriented gameplay of "Samurai Showdown 6", and that's still my most played game of the series. So for me, it's a bit of a letdown that faster-paced chain combos are absent. Combine that with the excruciating load times and the lack of a few of my key characters (I still think the launch roster would have done well with about 8 more characters), and this iteration of "Samurai Showdown" has me feeling a bit unsatisfied personally. Perhaps my opinion will improve with time.

"Code Of Princess" was originally released for the 3DS in 2012, and is a modern take on the classic 2D side-scroller beat-em-up from the old arcade days. This Switch "EX" version comes with a few quality of life changes, such as couch co-op and additional playable characters.
The gameplay is quite similar to other 2D side-scroller beat-em-ups...except instead of full 8-way movement, there are 3 plains that you hop between to face enemies (think Fatal Fury or of course, Guardian Heroes). The stages play out in a sectionalized fashion, with each mission only being a 3-7 minutes long before going back to the selection screen. Story-wise, "Code Of Princess" is nothing exceptional: Solange, a scantily-clad princess with a giant sword, sets out to save her kingdom with a rag-tag band of friends. You know the drill here.
The main campaign isn't terribly long–easily beatable in a few hours, but the real fun comes in trying out the bevy of available characters. Indeed, there are about 50 characters to choose between in Free-Play and Bonus mode (Campaign mode only lets you use the core cast of 8 characters, but that's fine). While not all of the characters are useful, it's fun to have the option of taking control of almost every enemy and ally in the game; some creatures such as the Dragon are crazy overpowered and blast to fool around with.
So why only the 3 star rating? Well...the campaign is a bit short, and the graphics didn't make the transition so nice to the Switch. When playing in docked mode, it becomes obvious most elements were upscaled from a lower resolution. Furthermore, the English language track that was present in the 3DS version is inexplicably absent from this port. This is still a decent beat-em-up though, and earns its own place aside "Dragon's Crown" and the like.

The physical release for this game at Best Buy was Dec. 15, 2020. It's been sitting at my local Best Buy store on the shelf for a few weeks. I went to check out and they told me they can't sell it because it doesn't exist in the system. What is going on?
