room size 16 by 20
what size t.v. is recommended for a 16 by 20 foot room?
This will depend on how far you're sitting back from the screen.
A good general rule of thumb is that you want to be 3x further than the diagonal screen size.
So for example, a 36" television is 3 feet, so you want to be 3x that, which is 9 feet away.
Of course, if you want to have a 63" television and sit up close, that's certainly something we're never going to try to talk you out of!
There is a science to this, of course, so allow me to explain. You get a great TV experience when you're able to encompass the entire picture without having to move your eyes more than a few degrees. Just like you don't want to squint to see the picture, you also don't want to be constantly moving your eyes back and forth - as this causes eye fatigue and can make you tired. In other words, it takes more effort to watch a movie close up (or far away) than it does at the right level.
Some eye movement is reasonable, but if you're constantly looking "alllll the way" left, and then "allll the way" right, it takes away from the experience, just like sitting in the front row at the theater is not ideal for most people's preferences, and for the same reasons. It's still a great picture, but the experience is not as good as it could be.
That said, some people love having a big TV for short shows, or gaming, or just showing off. There's nothing wrong with that either.
If you measure the distance from the panel to approximately where you'll be sitting, take that measurement into your nearest Best Buy, and start standing that "that exact distance" and watch TV for five minutes. See if it's too big. (And check out the colors on the panel). And ask questions. It's not silly to take a tape measure and be careful with your purchase. I'd rather take the time and do my research than pay a lot of money for something that doesn't give me the best possible experience.
Everyone will eventually have their own preferences. I like my TV's bigger than the 3x rule of thumb, but it's a personal preference.
