There is no GPU within this configuration Graphics processing is integrated within the Intel Core I-5 processor within this model. It is the Intel HD Graphics 620 version.

Looking for a cheap laptop to update my Garmin maps and to updated my satellite phone anyone know if this will handle that task ?

I see that a second monitor can be connected to the combo HDMI port but does this extend the display or does it mirror? Extending the display expands the desktop workspace to allow windows to be dragged over onto the other mon while mirror shows a copy
You will be able to select how the external monitor will function. Open the "display settings" in your computer and activate output to the external monitor. You can either mirror content of your computer on the external monitor or extend the display just like a dual monitor screen.

How will 1920x1080 movies look on this display? Will they play at all?

No, this computer can not create a hotspot. It could connect to a WiFi signal from a mobile hotspot though.

Is this laptop good for writing essays
This is an entry level, light use system with its Intel Celeron processor. It is not meant for multi-tasking or demanding programs. How do I reinstall Windows 10 on this machine if necessary at some point? Does it come with a Windows 10 DVD?
You need to create your own recovery discs now with Windows 10. Here is a link for instruction on creating recovery media for Windows 10: https://www.backup-utility.com/windows-10/create-windows-10-recovery-disk-4348.html. Additionally, this system is equipped with OneKey Recovery System. There is a very small pin hole on the left side of the device, right near the SD card slot on the device. You will need a pin to push this reset button. Plug the device in. Let the battery charge for about 15 minutes. Push the reset button. The system should boot to a choice screen where you can choose "Restore To Factory Default". Select this. It will delete everything from the hard drive except the original factory install of the operating system. You will need to reinstall all programs and files after the reset. If you don't have copies of the files, try to make one before you restore by selecting "Boot to desktop" and trying to back up your files.
