Would this laptop be recommend for a college student?

The will depend on the work the student will be doing on the device. This is an entry level system. It is meant for light use. It is good for Microsoft Office type work, browsing/research on the internet. If this is the type of work the student will be doing, this system will be a good choice.

I just bought this laptop few days ago, I'm having some doubts about the usb ports, because it says: 1 USB 2.0 & 2 USB 3.0 ports compatible with USB 2.0 devices. But I'm trying to put my mouse who has a USB 2.0 port in the USB 3.0 port and is not working.

USB 3.0 ports are backward compatible to any USB 2.0 device. Be sure you are not confusing the HDMI or other port for the USB 3.0. Also, be sure that the mouse is compatible with Windows 10. You can check to see if the mouse is compatible by plugging the mouse in to the USB 2.0 port to test it on this device.
