The fan should not run constantly, but it will run anytime the system is working on a task. If you are working on a program the fan will run to cool the system.

What is the casing material? Is it durable?

The case is aluminum. It is durable, it can take minor bumps. This system requires proper care though.

Will this machine work with latest Mint or Ubuntu versions for Linux? Also, can RAM be increased from 8 to 16 GB? It seems most things work fine in Linux, but not sure about this one. . Just looking to replace my current machine (old dell inpsiron 530).

Windows 10 Home, the operating system on this device, is compatible with side-by-side installation of Linux.
