Light and Thin and Bright! Touchscreen is Precise!
on June 18, 2022
Posted by: dronedad
The Asus Zenbook 2-in-1 solves that touch screen generation problem... You know, when you stare at a screen, and then you go to tap/swipe/pinch to zoom, only to remember you're on your computer, and not a tablet or a phone? Well here we are! As far as hardware goes, this laptop is jam packed. 12th Gen Core i7, with 16gb of RAM and an SSD all stack together for a very quick machine when running Windows 11. I was on the fence about the Intel Arc A370M Graphics card, but with it's discrete memory, and obvious Intel integration and Microsoft support, it's humming along quickly and smoothly. The 15.6-inch display is BRIGHT, and colorful. A number of certifications and calibrations accompany this display, that you'll likely overlook like I did, until you splash something on the screen that blows you away in terms of color reproduction and clarity, and then you'll want to know the why and the how. There are a number of built in display modes that can be toggled using the included ASUS apps, but I've settled into 2 and don't deviate much from those two. Low light and Night Mode performance are also spectacular. Battery life right out of the box is enough for me to pack my old laptop away. This laptop is also some of the first to be shipped with Wifi6, and I haven't noted a marked difference yet, but I'm hoping to do some side by side testing with a non wifi6 device on my Wifi6 Mesh router system.
The folding screen is a little bit of a double edged sword, and this is where I knocked them down a star. If you're going to pack this much ability into a screen, I was a little annoyed that the Asus pen was not included, as it's mentioned various times in the marketing materials, and it's an additional purchase. Other laptops that I've had have solved the whole "flip the screen all the way around" issue a few different ways, but so far I find I can't do that with this laptop because there is no easy way or shortcut to disable the keyboard once it's flipped flat, which means just handling the laptop resulted in key presses. I would have loved to see a sensor here, like so many other devices, that disables the keyboard once the screen hinge gets past a certain extension. The touchscreen itself is amazing and responsive, and I do find myself using it a lot. Another point to note - the build in power profiles may throttle the computer enough to be annoying when you work unplugged, if you're not aware of how they're set up, or when you get into the dregs of your battery. Last but not least, the laptop ships with a substantial power brick and proprietary barrel connector, even through the machine charges over USB-C/Thunderbolt, which is puzzling. Other ASUS products I own came with higher wattage USB-C bricks, I can't figure out why this one insisted on adding another proprietary connector to my stable.
Overall this laptop is well made, very thin and light, and I LOVE the screen colors and brightness. I would recommend, and this one has replaced all others in my house as the primary machine.

Vac Mops have arrived for Hard Floors!
on June 13, 2022
Posted by: dronedad
As someone who owns a home with mostly hardwood floors, small amounts of carpets, and a large number of rugs, I've definitely struggled to find the best and most versatile cleaning solutions. The Floor One S3 is the closest I've come yet to floor cleaning bliss.
Things I liked about it:
Tidy package with the dock, holds most of the parts and accessories, and you don't have to plug in to charge it, there are contacts in the dock that do this for you.
Extra brush roller
Self Cleaning mode when you dock
Voice announcements for what it's doing as it cleans/changes modes
iLoop tells you when it detects dirty floors
Things I didn't like as much (Opportunities)
HEAVY for it's size
Battery life is shorter than expected for the size
Auto Mode tends to use more water than I would expect
Does this really need wifi?
Clean water tank is even smaller/shorter use time than the battery life
Doesn't sneak in under things as nimbly as you might hope
Voice announcements will definitely need to be shut off, or at least reduced in volume
This vac-mop is quite hefty for it's somewhat compact looking size, and is definitely bottom weighted design. The cleaning power and abilities are the best I've seen yet from a vac mop, and I have been zipping it out just to have the satisfaction of cleaning up a particular mess or dust bunny. On the flip side, I feel like I can watch the battery level drop by the second as I use it, and it doesn't quite do my entire main floor of hardwood/tile. The clean water tank seems like I'm constantly filling it. Reading the manual is NOT optional, as you need to know how often to manually clean what. The iLoop display is informative, and I found I was able to charge it up and start using it immediately.
I love it, I'm not going back, also I'll keep waiting or the perfect solution, but until then, I'm using this one.

How Often Used:3-5 times a week
Knowing how much these little guys cost, I did not have high expectations, and on a lot of those fronts I was correct after using them for a few days. Not stellar battery life, just okay sound quality, obviously no noise canceling to speak of. Skullcandy reports 3.5 hours of built in battery life, and another 8.5 in the case. I did not get anywhere near those numbers in my testing, but I am actually okay with it! They did a few things well, and here is where they got a lot of things right on these. They stay in well for me. Yes I realize this is a personal choice, and these ape the "modern design standard" a little bit in terms of form factor, but they have similar holding power to a pair of the common brand's "pro" headphones. Sound quality wasn't knocking any socks off, neither are the microphones, of which there are one on each side, so you can use each bud solo. Bluetooth connectivity is rock solid thanks to the BT5.2, and they were consistent with my iPhone 12 Pro. The case is a nice little size, and I loved the addition of the keeper strap to carabiner them inside my bag. Sweat and water resistant was also a nice surprise at this price. I was a little surprised at the throwback to micro USB, but it works out okay in this case, if they're keeping costs down.

Ergonomics for Lefties!
on May 2, 2022
Posted by: dronedad

I'm loving the inclusion that comes from big name brands like Logitech introducing left handed versions of their desktop products. Previously my choices were off brand products that has questionable built quality, and this one lives up to the logitech standard. There might be a technical name for this kind of ergonomic mouse, but I"ve come to know it as the "tennis ball" style, where it feels like you're holding a tennis ball, rather than a flat-ise mouse. It forces your hand up and around it, and turns and flexes that tendon in your forearm that causes all the repetitive injuries. Some products, like my previous off brand one, angled my hand a little higher than I was comfortable with, and this one seems to be just right. Placement of the scroll wheel and button are spot on, and the mousing buttons have a satisfying click sensation without being too loud when you click them. The thumb button placement is counterintuitive at first, but I got used to it. I found myself only really using the back button on this mouse. A logitech unifying receiver, a standard "modern" optical eye, and the usual "brushed rubber plastic" finish that feels sturdy but comfortable, round out this product. I think ergonomic mice and keyboards should be the standard for anyone who works with a computer on the daily, and there's no reason lefties should be left out!

Best Flosser on the market + ideal toothbrush
on May 2, 2022

I've been using Philips Sonicare toothbrushes for a number of years now, and I won't spend a ton of time in my review on the toothbrush itself. This product is set up just like I would expect from any other Sonicare product. The integration of the base for the flosser and the toothbrush charger is a nice feature, and it saves space on the counter. I mention this because you won't have any choice but to put it on the counter - it takes up some substantial room! After having previously used a Waterpik flosser that was a little messy, this is a nice change of pace. Philips has applied the same idea with the changeable toothbrush heads to their flossing system, and the tips are replaceable. The handle of the flosser is the same form factor as the tooth brushes and the water tube is self retracting nicely into the base. It's also long enough to give you some working room when you want to floss, even though you won't want to wander far from the sink anyway while you're using one of these. Multiple cleaning modes and pulsing to the water stream serve similar functions as the toothbrushing letting you know when it's time to change sides. Of course refilling the tank is dependant upon how often and for how long you use the flosser, but during my first few weeks I got at least 3 days out of each fill before I had to refill it. None of the modes are painful on my gums, and the deep clean feels like it is making a difference on my teeth and gums.
The added inclusion of the Sonicare toothbrush as well really tops this one off. The included brush has the 3 modes - Clean, Deep Clean and Gums, and it's compatible with the wide range of Sonicare heads as well. This is the brush that I had already replaced most of my family's with (or one similar) and I loved that there is a charger for it on the base of the flosser. Overall this is well made, and garners the room that it takes up on the counter. I love being able to answer "YES!" when the hygienist asks me if I've finally gotten around to flossing...

Good Sound, Alternative to popular wireless buds
on May 2, 2022

How Often Used:Daily
The Marshall branding here is an interesting one, as the premiere guitar amplifier brand. The sound on these is expected to be top notch, and these almost get there for me. Fit is similar to a suspiciously similar looking popular brand in white, with no changes/improvements over that style. These headphones are an interesting mix of features. The reported battery time of 25 hours includes some charging from the case in the battery, so you're really getting 4 hours + out of the headphones at a time. Wireless charging with the case is also a nice feature at this price point. Surprisingly no support for Apple AAC codec is an interesting omission, I expected these headphones to support that. The case itself packs ~5 charges for the headphones, but feels somewhat lightweight and doesn't match the construction of the headphones themselves. I would have loved to see some active noise cancelling here too, but that's not in the cards. Design wise these are unique and definitely fit with the style I expect from Marshall and are rocker-centric. This market segment is a little saturated and I recommend you do some research before purchasing.

Having purchased from Purple and Tuft and Needle in the past, I'm used to the memory foam mattress game being internet only and not coming from the old standbys. Well it appears that mattress legend Serta has gotten into this market in a big way. One thing I was immediately struck by when the mattress was delivered - It's in a fairly small box and HEAVY. They really manage to compress these things for shipping, and it's always amusing to watch them return to their intended shape/size after being unboxed. If you're new to memory foam mattresses, I suggest you make sure you get a chance to lay on one, your friend's, at a store, or at an airbnb. If you already know you like firm and supportive, then carry on. This mattress is well covered in a nicely made textured cover. Similar to most memory foam mattresses there is a dedicated "top" so you can't flip it in both directions like you could the mattresses of old, but this is probably okay with the gel topper that Serta has introduced here. The gel topper helps keep this mattress from exhibiting the "heat island" effect that sometimes plagues other memory foam mattresses that absorb and reflect your body heat. One way I like to test a mattress is if I can kneel on it and not feel the bars of my bed supports below, and this one passed the test. 10-inches may not seem like a very deep mattress, but it does account for a fairly lux and firm one in this setting. Sheets are a whole other issue, and definitely do your research, but they are widely available for 10-inch deep mattresses. I am a convert and will not be going back to traditional spring and woven mattresses.

Wonderful travel skin cleanser
on February 14, 2022
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN
For this review, I also consulted my daughter, dronegirl. She was already using some products and had a skin care regimen, but no active skin cleansing was involved. In this case the device did seem a little bit like a solution in search of a problem, but repeated cleansings over time have proven that it has a necessary place in the bathroom of someone who is cleansing and moisturizing. The cleanser is well made and waterproof, and has 3 different brush types for different skin textures or areas of your face. Paired with your already favorite moisturizing cleanser, it changed the experience from "just clean" to "spa day pores wide open clean" The gentle action of the brushes is effective and not uncomfortable. The only complaint is that if this is the mini... I don't want to see anything larger. I understand that if it were smaller it would take a lot longer to complete a facial cleanse, but also it's not very easy to travel with. I would recommend this product to others.

Kids headphones can really be hit or miss. It seems like one of the main pillars are that they need to be durable, because they're likely going to be abused. These ones aren't it. The build quality felt suspect as I hacksawed it out of it's blister pack, but I'm not sure they could handle more than one or two drops to the floor. The ear padding also looks as if it's going to come away easily, but I didn't want to test that. the sizing on the small side if you follow their guidelines, with this pair being almost maxed out in adjustment on my 7 year old. The sides of the headphones do adjust, and there are detents in the plastic that are intended to hold that size, but whatever mechanism is meant to keep them there, it just flexes and slides, so I'm not sure why they bothered. Perhaps most misleading is that these headphones do no active noise cancelling. While there is quite a bit of truth to the idea that a good seal around the earcups of a well fitting pair of headphones can block out a fair amount of ambient sounds, I wanted to see these advertised specifically as passive, and the HearMuffs model name implied more active noise reduction/cancelling. Last and maybe most glaring is that these headphones do not have the ability to hardwire - they are Bluetooth only. This means you cannot use them on a plans for in flight entertainment, and when the battery goes dead... you better have a contingency plan.

Logitech's Workhorse arrives for the Left Handed
on February 8, 2022

The 650 mouse is practically ubiquitous in the workplace or anyone who needs a solid, performing, no nonsense mouse. Myself and others are relieved to see that it has arrived in left handed form. This mouse is not OVERLY shaped, at least to the point where it would be impossible for someone to switch it to right handed and use it to do some basic tasks, but it does fit the hand nicely. The scroll wheel and thumb buttons feel satisfying to use and you are confident in clicks that are firm and not overly loud. Also this mouse continues Logitech's unifying receiver method of connection, which is not Bluetooth, but almost as convenient, you can connect more than one device to a single unifying receiver. This mouse is shaped, but is not an ergonomic dedicated device by any means. It also clocks in a lot cheaper than anything that is ergonomic. I would recommend it.

iPod connector for 2005 Volvo XC90?

One of my collegues at work mentioned that he had Best Buy install an iPod adaptor to his 2004 Volvo XC90 (problematic for most of us owners as the radio user fiber optics, MOST system). I have a 2005 XC90, but the radios are the same. He had thought it ran him about $130 when he Best Buy did it a year or two ago. I have a local Best Buy that I can bring my car to and have this done as well, but I thought I would ask the question first of Best Buy online and understand what unit they offer for this connectivity and how it's installed. Please advise! I'd like to do this within a week... I miss having iPod connectivity!! Chris
The 2005 Volvo XC90 DOES NOT have an auxiliary input, nor can you add one without an accessory like the GROM MST. That's the only way to plug in an ipod or anything to an XC90

Display work or school presentations on this Epson projector. It produces 3200 lumens of white and color brightness for vivid images, and its easy setup lets you customize specifications in minimum time. This Epson projector is equipped with an HDMI port, so you can connect it to your computer or HD device.

how is the picture with this projector with daylight in the room?

3200 lumens is pretty bright. Epson would recommend you not have direct daylight for optimal use... I can tell you this projector works VERY well with direct overhead lighting, and it keeps up with sunlight okay. It's definitely not like the older deal breaker projectors that required the blinds closed.

Simplify your everyday life with the Google Home, a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant. Use voice commands to enjoy music, get answers from Google and manage everyday tasks. Google Home is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, and can control compatible smart devices such as Chromecast or Nest."

I want to use HUE lights with this. Can I buy a 2nd Google Home for my 2nd floor so both floors can access Home to turn off/on lights? If my phone (synced to Home) is out of the house, will voice activation still work for the lights?

Google home will let you group and name the lights for each room. I don't believe they are intended to be used overlapping though. In fact you might confuse it with more than one connected to the same google account. The Google Home works without your phone at home, since it connects directly to the HUE account as well as the internet and wifi directly.
