Improve daily oral hygiene routines with this Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush. An internal sensor regulates applied pressure to prevent soreness of teeth and gums, and the BrushSync reminder lets you know when it's time to change the brush head. This Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush removes up to seven times more plaque than a regular toothbrush to maintain oral health.

Does exactly what it says it will!

This is the toothbrush that I should have purchased years ago. I've always thought that these were overpriced 'gadgets' that didn't really serve much purpose, when you can brush your teeth yourself.
My wife has sworn by these type of toothbrushes for years, and in fact has the 'Ross Geller' teeth to show for it! She's gone through about three of these toothbrushes in the time we've been married.
So I finally caved and picked up the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 Rechargeable Toothbrush. And being a guy, I chose black, because lets face it, it's the most manly looking one they make! Now if only the brush heads were black as well, it would be perfect!
I have to say, I've been converted. I like the quadrant timing, that allows you to brush each quarter of your mouth (bottom left, bottom right, top left, top right) in 30 second intervals. It then beeps for you to move on. That's a nice way of making sure that you have a good solid 30 seconds on each area of your mouth. It also has a pressure sensor, that changes the vibration resonance of the toothbrush if you press too hard on your teeth. You certainly notice it as well, because it's vibrating inside your head.
This 5100 model also has three brushing options:
CLEAN - this cleans your teeth (with your aid obviously - you still have to hold the toothbrush!) for a timed 2 minutes.
WHITE - This cleans your teeth for 2 mins 30 secs, and recommended to be used with an optional 'white' brush head.
GUMS - This cleans for 3 mins, using an optional 'gum' brush head.
It's a shame you don't get these 'optional' brush heads in a pack costing $90, hence a dropped star in the rating.
The device is lightweight, and ergonomic and works well. My only complaint I guess would be that the head is really small compared to the toothbrushes I have been used to using all of these years, so it's taken some getting used to. It comes with 'EasyStart' a function that modulates the power over your first 14 brushing cycles to get you used to the Sonicare experience.
The included charger is simple to use, just plugs into the wall and the toothbrush sits on the base. A little green light lets you know the charge status. Full charge is suggested to last a full 24 hours of use. It also comes with a little carrying case for when traveling and a little cap to cover the toothbrush head.
It features smart brush heads that sync with your handle to give you a replacement reminder. An orange LED lights up when it's time to replace your brush head.
All in all, a nice little piece of kit that I was surprised I would like and enjoy using. You can call me converted to the Sonicare range. I'd gladly recommend this to friends and family!

Fantastic Picture, Fan a Little Distracting
on March 18, 2018
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
Hooking up the Epson Home Cinema 2100 was something I only wanted to do once, as the projector I was replacing was suspended from the ceiling. I didn't want to be up and down a ladder tweaking the set up. Thankfully the Epson Home Cinema 2100 was nice and easy to get installed. It's fairly light, so not cumbersome to hold as you screw it into a pre-existing mount you might have.
I was replacing an Optoma HD27 projector I purchased when I first moved into my new house. That projector suffered from a rainbow effect when you moved your eyes quickly around the screen. This projector suffers from no such rainbow effect at all. It's a nice refreshing change!
I have a 100" screen so there is a lot of screen for your eyes to move around in! The first thing I noticed when turning on the Home Cinema 2100 was the clarity of the picture. It really is a great looking, crisp and vibrant looking image. Much more vibrant than my previous projector. However, the trade off for that vibrancy was the sound of the fan. It was loud. Once navigating through the settings, I was able to put the projector in eco mode, which cut the fan noise in half. (Thankfully). However the picture did dim slightly, so I had to go in and adjust the picture settings some more to make the final image look just how I wanted it to.
The screen size and screen focus adjuster are sliders on the top side of the projector. That made for a quick and easy adjustment to make the picture fill my screen area, and then adjust the focus to be nice and crisp. I had everything set up in about 20 mins.
In addition, I have my media center voice activated as well and it was simple enough to replace my original projector with this new Epson one and after a little coding, I had this Epson projector voice activated as well. (This is not a feature of the projector - I have a harmony hub set up for this functionality).
I'm very impressed with the overall picture quality compared to my previous projector. If you use the projector in a dedicated media room where you can turn up the sound, the fan won't be too much of a problem, but if you have to watch this projector with subdued sound, you will be disturbed by it in my opinion. That, fortunately, is my only concern with this projector. It's a nice looking unit with a great picture. Lots of adjustment capabilities to get the picture just how you want it.
I've included a picture of it mounted and then a picture of what the screen looks like, even with my media lights on. You can see it's a nice clear, vibrant picture with this projector.
Maybe there will be a software update to help address the fan issue, but there is no way I could watch a movie with the projector not in eco mode. I haven't given the projector a chance to see if the fan does calm down when left in normal mode, it was just too distracting to me. The picture is far superior to my previous projector, so that alone is worth keeping the projector set up in there!
I would definitely recommend the projector for it's picture quality alone. But please be aware, that the fan is a little noisy, when listening at low volumes. You may be able to tune it out, or drown it out with a nice movie soundtrack like I have done.

Another Great Sounding Extra Bass Speaker
on March 18, 2018
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
I've been a fan of SONY products for years. They always produce a quality product at a great price.
The SONY SRS XB31 Bluetooth Speaker is no exception. It's a very nicely put together speaker. I was able to power up the speaker without charging, the speaker arrived with 75% charge in it, so it's always nice to have your product arrive and you can use it right away.
Pressing the power button, it went into pairing mode. Looked for it on my phone, it paired and connected right away. You can play music via your phones 'music' app or through the SONY Music Center App. (You can also set up your speaker through that same app, and also adjust the lighting and sound settings).
The sound is nice and punchy, full of bass, as you would expect from a SONY Extra Bass product. Tuning your sounds via the Music Center app really gets you some nice levels and sound quality.
You can add speakers to a chain to create either Stereo or a Party Chain sound. This is where I got frustrated. I don't have two of the same SONY speakers, at this price point, not sure how many people will have multiple versions of the bluetooth speaker, but, I did have an SRS XB30 speaker on hand. I tried and tried to pair the two together, as they both have speaker pairing capabilities, but alas, it did not work. I believe now, that you can only pair speakers from the same 'group' i.e. SRS XB30 and SRS XB40, but not an SRS XB30 and an SRS XB31. That is where I was held up, trying to pair an SRS XB30 and an SRS XB31 speaker together (maybe someone from SONY can confirm?).
The lights are a nice additional show that you can customize and turn off if you want to. You do have a lot of control over them.
This speaker is waterproof as well. Not just splashproof, but waterproof. Its IP rating means you can take it to the beach without any concerns at all (as long as you MAKE SURE you close the little power cover on the back). If you don't do that, you'll be in trouble!
Another 'feature' this speaker has is the ability to tap it to create sounds. I thought it was going to be an interesting concept to check out, but the reality is that is was a little cumbersome to use. You don't really 'tap' the speaker, but you have to hit it really quite hard for it to register. You are able to make drum sounds with it, kick drum, snare, cymbals etc, it's deifnitely a novelty, not sure of the life of that novelty tho!
Overall a great sounding and good looking speaker, waterproof for use at a pool or the beach without any concerns of damage. Nice and easy to pair (bluetooth with my iPhone) but has NFS if you have an Android device. Good, rich, bassy sound, perfect for enjoying time with your friends. I would recommend this speaker!

Good, but not great.

I was excited to check out the SONY WI-SP500 Wireless In-Ear Headphones, as I have a set of SONY MDR-XB70BT headphones that I love. With the SP500's being a newer product, was hoping for even better performance.
My biggest issue with the headphones was getting them to stay in my ear. The two sizes of earpiece didn't work for me, and then the size of the power units coupled with the earpieces caused them to slip out of my ears. I couldn't get a comfortable seat with them to my ear. They have little dimples on them that are supposed to 'grip' your ear, but it didn't work for me.
Conversely the SONY XB70BT's are absolutely some of the most comfortable headphones I have ever used in my life.
Moving on to the sound, the headphones sound really good (once I pressed them to my ears), just as I would expect them to from SONY. They offer an 8 hour battery life, are splash proof and sweat proof and have NFC and Bluetooth connectivity.
Connecting to my iPhone was a breeze, just like it should be, and the little battery monitor icon is a nice touch to keep an eye on their levels.
Sound is warm and bassy, again, like you would expect from SONY headphones. With the open-type drivers, you are able to hear sounds around you, so if you are running in the street, you can still hear the vehicles and people around you. Although they are connected wirelessly, they are not truly wireless, as there is a small wire that connects the two earpieces around the back of your neck.
Storage is achieved by a little rubber band looking thing that you place the headphones in and then wrap the cord around it. Not crazy about that design, it works, but I think it could be detrimental to the headphones over time as a storage solution, putting undue stress on that neck cord.
Overall the sounds is really good, especially at the price point, I just had an issue with them staying in my ears. I would ultimately have to force them in my ear, introducing a pain to my ear canal.

So Much Potential, Connectivity a Huge Issue
on February 26, 2018
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
I'm a huge home automation fan, so when I saw that Garmin was bringing out a GPS with Amazon Alexa built in, I was really excited, and then to have the dash cam in there sealed the deal for me.
Upon receiving the Garmin Speak Plus, with Dash Cam and Amazon Alexa, I was surprised to see just how small it is. The round face of it is right at 1.5" in diameter, so when it's on the windshield, it is really unobtrusive, and I love that.
I really, really wanted to love all of this product from the first day I saw it. It had everything I wanted in something aftermarket I wanted in my vehicle. Being able to speak to Alexa when a weird question arose or to add things to my Amazon shopping cart on the move, or to control the lights in my house BEFORE I got home, (without using GeoFencing) would be great.
Out of the box, you get very little instructions, a nice long power cord with a 12V adapter on the end, the unit and two sticky magnetic mounts. Installation is a breeze. You stick the mount where you want to (I chose the center of my windshield up high, to the left of my rear view mirror). I ran the power cable straight up and into the headliner, all the way along the front of the windshield, down the A pillar and then in behind the rubber of the door seal on my Camaro. You can only see about 3" of cable, all of the rest is hidden. Looks perfect!
Download the Garmin Speak App and connect to Bluetooth. Now this is where I have some issues. On day one, I connected and it found my Garmin Speak Plus. Was able to play around with it in the car that evening. I was excited to use the GPS in the morning. Started my drive to work the following day and on my 17 mile commute to work, my iPhone and Garmin Speak Plus disconnected from Bluetooth 8 times. My phone never moved and was only 24" away from the Garmin Speak Plus. This was infuriating. I use Bluetooth all the time in my car, as I walk up to the car, it automatically connects to my Camaro and I've used it like this for almost 8 years now, but in one day with the Garmin Speak Plus, it disconnected over and over and over again.
It rendered the product almost useless at all to me, being as I couldn't use the GPS, or use Alexa, and couldn't review any of the dash cam footage that had been recorded. I was incredibly disappointed. This was on Feb 10th.
I did some searching and investigation online to find out that Garmin was releasing an update for the Garmin Speak Plus software and also an app update around Feb 12th. Feb 12th came and went, I was still having connectivity issues, but the dash cam was working and actually a lot better than I was expecting. I posted a recording online and my friends were very impressed with the quality of it! So instead of removing the Garmin Speak Plus, I decided to keep it in the car and use it for the dash cam. A couple of days later, while driving home, the Garmin Speak Plus turned itself off and did the software update (mid navigation, which was a tad inconvenient!). And then that evening, the Garmin Speak app updated as well.
Since then, the connectivity issues have been fewer, and now my phone and the Garmin Speak Plus reconnect fairly seamlessly, meaning that I can complete a navigation route, however, it does still disconnect about 4 times in a trip. And every time it connects back up, you get the 'welcome sound'. Which you can turn off, but I kind of like having it on so that I know that it has initially connected. Just gets a little annoying by the fourth or fifth time of connecting on the journey.
The GPS doesn't appear to be particularly dynamic, unlike Google Maps. There are times that Google Maps has taken me to work 5 different ways on 5 different days, in order to avoid delays, traffic, wrecks etc, whereas the Garmin Speak Plus has taken me the same way to work, every single day. There doesn't appear to be any algorithm to take account of the traffic. I do like that the ring around the Garmin Speak Plus lights up in green at the bottom and builds around the whole ring as you get closer to your desired junction. That is very useful and a nice feature.
Something that would be nice to have is to be able to click on the map in the app, and see real time your position on the map, again, as a visual cue, if you have your phone mounted in the car. I've tried tapping on the map in the app to no avail.
I do like the forward collision warning, and the lane departure warnings, both the audible and visual cues (ring turn yellow in the direction of the obstacle). The sensitivity can be adjusted and it works very well indeed.
My Amazon Alexa account linked quickly and cleanly, and works reall well, when the bluetooth connection is available. I'm able to control my lights, thermostat etc as I am driving, so that my house is how I want it when I get home. I also find myself asking random questions, which passes the time on the commute. The Garmin Speak Plus also lowers the volume of what ever you are listening to when asking questions or receiving information.
The dash cam is really, really good. Nice and smooth, nice high definition and a good frame rate. The Garmin VIRB app doesn't seem to work well. I couldn't get it to work as requested in the user guide. Instead, if you click on 'Gallery' in the Garmin Speak app, you are able to connect to the dash cam footage a lot easier. And easier still is to connect your dash cam direct to your PC. You can simply drag and drop your footage that way.
It would be nice if the power cord was also a USB cord, so you could just plug it into a USB outlet in the car (most cars have them now a days) and then you could also use it with your PC to download your video footage.
The Garmin Speak Plus is a fantastic product with so much potential. It has a nice small footprint, unobtrusive, pleasing to the eye and useful. The caveat is 'when it works'. The bluetooth connectivity issue is so frustrating. I use bluetooth headphones with my phone at work, they never disconnect. I use the bluetooth in my car, and it never disconnects, I use bluetooth to connect to my media center at home, and again it doesn't disconnect, so I don't quite understand why the Garmin Speak Plus continually disconnects from the bluetooth on my phone. I'd happily give this product 5 stars, if there wasn't such a connectivity issue.
I can recommend this product as a dash cam, as it does record even when the bluetooth isn't connected. Outside of that, it's a tough sell.

Series 3 is really nice!

I've had a smart watch before, and quite frankly, it wasn't all that smart. Constantly annoying me with irrelevant information.
Having owned iPhones for years now, when the first Apple watch came out I was definitely intrigued. Then the second generation came out with more features and I paid closer attention. Well now that the Series 3 is out with GPS (the version I purchased) I couldn't be happier.
It's a nice slick interface, just like you are used to with Apple. The watch faces are clear, and interesting, and incredibly customizable. I like the fact that it tracks indicators of heartbeat, distances, flights of stairs etc, without you even having to do anything to the watch. It's just doing it all in the background, so it's not obtrusive.
You get reminders to breathe or stand up every now and again, but you can turn those off if necessary.
Connecting your phone to Apple CarPlay, the navigation also shows up on your watch, and it vibrates when you are coming up to your next intersection or direction change which is pretty neat.
Overall, I'm really happy with the watch, I mean it shows the time, just like you'd like a watch to, but it also shows notifications from my smart home, if cameras have been triggered etc (all via a connected phone) I didn't go with the cellar version.
Emails show up nicely on there, as do attachments and pictures.
A neat feature I didn't know the watches incorporated is the ability to talk and hear phone calls through it, very 'Star Trek'!
Only consideration I have is to not club the watch off of walls or desks etc, being as it's an expensive piece of kit!

I've been after a 'cheaper' lightning cord that actually works. I've bought several from abroad, but they never work consistently. I've found that the connection on them is a little too large, so they push themselves out of the phone and stop working.
I wanted come charging cords to use with the USB ports in my media sofa. I picked these up when they were on sale, and thankfully, they are working just fine. Phones and iPads charge just fine with these cables, without having to reposition or reinsert them constantly.
Would be nice if they came in a variety of colors, but that is not a huge issue.

Love Philips Hue Bulbs
on December 18, 2017
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
Ever since the Hue Lux bulbs came out, I have used Philips Hue bulbs around my house. Upgrading to the Hue Ambiance bulbs, they are a great addition to the home, and here's why...
Prior to using Hue bulbs, I had three way switches in my lamps in my living room for three brightness levels. Every night I would turn them on 'click, click, click' and then every night, I would turn each lamp off 'click, click, click'. With the Hue bulbs, I am able to turn on and off all the lamps at the same time, and control the brightness between apx 7% and 100% brightness. (When you get down real low in the brightness levels, there is no real discernable difference between 1% and 7%).
The Hue Ambiance bulbs take the Lux bulbs a stage further, without them being full color bulbs. They are able to switch from a warm, soft white to a vivid, blue/daylight tone. I say tone and not color, because they are not true color bulbs.
This is a nice feature to have, as sometimes you just want to have that more soothing soft light, or a more natural daylight look to your bulbs.
Setting up the base station and bulbs is very simple. Plug the base station into your router, turn it on and fire it up. Open up the app and follow the instructions. The easiest way to pair the bulbs is to take note of the 6-digit number on the side of the bulb. That is its unique identifier, you can type that into the app and it will set the bulb up really quickly. Otherwise you end up 'scanning' for the bulb and that can sometimes not work as well as you would like it to.
I believe that you can link together 50 bulbs at one time in the app. I currently have 10 bulbs, including Lux, Color and Ambiance bulbs. They all work seamlessly and I haven't had any problems at all.
I have had to contact Philips customer service in the past and they have been very helpful and responsive.
I've been very happy with all my Hue bulbs, and these Hue Ambiance bulbs are a nice addition to my kitchen. All of my Hue bulbs are voice activated, thanks to being able to link my Hue app with Alexa. Makes turning on and off the bulbs extremely simple, without ever having to go into the Hue app. I only need to go in there to adjust the tone of the bulbs, as I haven't set up a scene with Alexa yet to do that.
Overall, I would recommend, and DO recommend these bulbs to all of my friends. So much so I think they are fed up with me mentioning them!

Much better image quality and features!
on November 22, 2017
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
I've used Arlo cameras for a little over a year now. I have 6 original Arlo cameras, I have two Arlo Pro cameras and recently added two Arlo Pro 2 cameras.
I used the Arlo Pro 2 cameras to replace the two main cameras outside the front of my house. The batteries would run down fairly quickly on the original cameras that I had there, simply due to the traffic flow. I wanted to wait a little while to review to see what the battery life was like with the new cameras and so far I am very impressed, especially for a high traffic area, when I can get up to 300 videos per day produced.
The Arlo Pro 2 cameras have the ability to be hard wired, so you can also essentially set them up to have DVR functionality. I wanted to be able to have that option as well.
With the hard wired functionality, you can also set predetermined motion zones, so that if you do have a high traffic area, you can negate that area, so you don't get alerts all the time. That is definitely a nice feature.
The cameras are larger than the original cameras, but the same size as the Arlo Pro cameras. They connected directly to the base station no problem (I already had the second generation base station with siren installed, so that was nice and easy. To pair the camera, simply press the Sync button on the base station for 2 seconds and let go. Then press the Sync button on the camera for two seconds and let go. The lights flash blue for about 10 secs and then rapidly flash. You are then good to go and set them up in the Arlo app.
I have the $9.99 a month recording plan, that gives me 30 days of recording up to 10GB. This is more than enough for my needs and covers the 10 cameras I now have in the system. I think it's very reasonably priced. The Arlo website is nice and clean. Easy to navigate and use. I have assigned notifications via email and push, so that I know what's going on. The push is instant, so sometimes you have to wait for the recording to finish, before you can review it!
Daytime recording is nice and crisp and clean, and night vision is vastly improved over the original cameras. I can see my vehicle parked out front of the house from 50 ft away nice and clearly.
I still wish that there was a way to rotate the image 90 degrees. You can rotate it 180 degrees for when you have to have the camera mounted upside down, but if you are shooting down a hallway or the side of the house, it would be nice to be able to rotate the camera image 90 degrees.
Overall I would heartily recommend these cameras. Easy to set up, easy to install, great picture quality, and functionality.

Versatile, but heavy 2 in 1 laptop

I was excited when I received my Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop with Intel Core i5, 8GB Memory and 2TB Hard Drive in Era Gray as I'd been interested in a convertible laptop for a while.
When the box arrived, there was nothing fancy about it at all, opened it up and it had suitable 'eggbox' style packaging inside.
Unwrapped the laptop, turned it on and it fired up. Went through all the usual set up, windows activation, face recognition for login, preferences etc. Very straight forward.
Went to test the touchscreen, folding the laptop back on itself and found the hinges to be very stiff indeed. Took more force than I was expecting to be able to do that, definitely a two hand move. However, being as the laptop can be used as it's own stand when in tablet mode, I can understand why the hinges are so tight. It just wasn't what I was expecting.
At this time, everything fired up nice and quickly, launching youtube and loading videos, everything was smooth and clear. The slim bezel, large screen looks really nice when videos are full screen. Nice smooth resolution and high detail.
The keyboard is backlit, which is especially useful when using the laptop at night, a nice soft glow, with a very 'mac-like' tactile feel to the keys.
The brushed aluminum case is nice looking, functional and should be nice and durable over time. The trackpad is large, with a nice little definition detail between the 'buttons' and the trackpad. It functions nice and smoothly. The power button is nicely detailed too, although the power button light is a little distracting when using in low light.
The next time I went to use the laptop, it seemed to take a long time to wake up, and connect itself back to the network. Seemed to take a lot longer than the other PC laptop I have on my network (and for reference, I have AT&Ts Gigapower service). That was a concern to me as you want to 'pick up and play' when you are using a laptop or definitely a tablet. At this time tho, that is my only concern really with this laptop. Otherwise it is a really nice product with some really nice high end features on it.

Philips 3200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine w/ LatteGo, Black

Can it do cold drinks as well as hot? And what is the maximum volume it can brew? Can it brew a whole pot of coffee?

No, this machine does not do cold drinks. It has 5 pre-set coffee settings, and a hot water setting. It brews single cups at a time, so won't brew a whole pot at one time.

Yes, they are in stereo. They also have Bose AR, augmented audio, surrounding your head with directional sound. They sound really good for a product like this. Not as good as in-ear headphones, but they do have a surprisingly good sound.

Make your home a more welcoming hub with this Philips Hue white ambiance A19 starter kit. Whether you desire a warm natural glow or energizing color tones, customize it just the way you like with the accompanying app. For parties, easily sync your lights to music with this Philips Hue white ambiance A19 starter kit.

Can I access lights when NOT at home

Yes you can. Using the app, you are able to control them from anywhere in the world. And I have done! While on vacation to the UK, from the US, I would monitor my house through my video cameras and then adjust the schedules of my lights, randomizing them and checking them from almost 5000 miles away. Worked really well.
