Great Charger, Bad Everything Else
on December 28, 2018
Posted by: HarvickFan

I love Anker products, in fact I have a few Anker USB chargers in the car/truck already. Give me a great Anker charger with Alexa integration! Sign me up! However after using the Roav for a bit, I have to say that it was more frustrating than fun/useful.
Now my truck already has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, so this would have been overkill, but I love our Alexa devices in the home (we have 5) so I thought why not get one for the car too. The charger is nice, very sturdy build, albeit all light plastic, and the size is a little larger than other dual USB chargers, but overall not too bad.
I’ll start by saying that the USB charging ports seemed to charge really fast, as I would expect from Anker. My other Anker chargers are fast charge capable, and this one seemed to be right on par with the others, it charged my iPhone XS Max and GoPro super fast, even though I hadn’t readily seen what the amperage output was from this Roav. So as a USB charger, this thing is awesome.
The Alexa integration was frustrating to say the least. It took forever to connect and setup. They do try and warn you that connect to it before your device connects to your car, and it’s true. If you don’t manually disconnect your device from your existing pairing with your vehicle, this Roav will never connect. After unpairing my device from my truck, I eventually was able to connect to the Roav, although it still took a long time. Then you have to connect the Roav in your Alexa app. That was much easier. Once connected, it handled the usual “Hey Alexa” questions just fine, just like the home units, however getting it to operate in a way that was useful in the car was lacking. It’s not integrated with any music service except for Amazon’s own Prime music and Sirius XM radio if you have a subscription. Apple Music, Google Music, Spotfiy etc. weren’t happening. Same with navigation. I could only get the Alexa to work with Waze, nothing else would open. And if you don’t use Waze, asking the Alexa Roav anything related to where you are, navigation, points of interest etc. is worthless. Then, almost randomly, the Roav would disconnect from my device and I’d have to reconnect all over again. When using it, it seemed to hear me ok, but you have to be on your Media or Bluetooth input all the time for it to work, and it didn’t lower the volume of whatever was playing when asking it a question or getting a reply.
Since I already have CarPlay integration in my vehicle, I’m going to stick with that, since I can ask Siri anything I can ask Alexa, and CarPlay works perfectly. I think this Alexa Roav would be ok to use in a vehicle with no other integration, so that it’s not competing for usefulness. I think this will be fine in the wife’s vehicle, to take on trips as a charger first, and have fun (maybe) with Alexa a distant 2nd.

Fun gadget toy, not practical for actual images
on December 2, 2018
Posted by: HarvickFan
from Indianapolis, IN
While the AirSelfie 2 is a fun, geeky little gadget that has some initial coolness factor when you pull it out and let it fly and start taking some pictures, the quality of the images are just not good enough to use for any practical purpose, or justify the price of the drone.
PROS:
Packaging is above and beyond
Build Quality - very nice fit/finish
Charges Fast
Small size fits easily in hand or pocket
iOS app was very easy to setup, navigate and connect and fly
Facial recognition feature worked pretty well
Multiple drone flying modes from Easy to Expert
Images and video in very bright light were ok
Stabilization works pretty well
CONS:
Extremely Noisy - cannot be used indoors where people could be bothered
Image quality degrades rapidly when light conditions are not IDEAL
Flight calibration was very finicky
No Audio in the Videos
Reviewing and/or saving the images felt cumbersome
Price
All in all, this thing is a great toy to have for the “what do you get the person that has a ton of gadgets” or maybe kids would love it since they may not be too concerned with the image quality. But if you’re looking for something like this that actually takes good pictures or video, especially at this price, i’d keep looking. or just buy a selfie stick :)

Hear your music and nothing else
on September 23, 2018

from Indianapolis, IN
I've been using these as my daily headphones for over a week now, and I can honestly say I've never worn a pair of noise cancelling headphones that are better than these.
I'll start by saying that the only reason I'm giving them a 4 star review and not 5, is because of the headband design. The curve of the headband is more tear drop shape, not very square across the head, so I have to keep the headband opened up a little bit larger than I'd like to, just to get the ear-cups to fit over my ears in a comfortable way. I wish I could keep them a little more secured to my head, but keeping them opened larger at least gives me a comfortable fit.
The headphones are super light, but the build quality is very good. The sound quality is amazing. I'm not sure what the Liquid Crystal Polymer diaphragms are doing under the hood here, but the HD audio quality is simply superb. And activate the Noise Cancelling, and everything goes away, i mean everything. All ambient noise is flipped off like a switch. I was truly amazed. And the new Sense Engine tailors the ambient noise to the environment you are in. And when you need to hear the world around you, without taking the headphones off, simply raise your hand and cover the earcup - noise cancelling and music pauses so you can speak to others, hear important information around you, etc. it works exceptionally well.
Call quality was pretty good, people told me that I was clear sounding on cellular calls, but did sound a tad bit faint.
They are super comfortable and I never got listening fatigue when having them on for hours at a time. The Battery holds up as well, on full charges I never needed to recharge or stop my listening.

Excellent Build, Excellent Sound
on September 3, 2018

These headphones are simply amazing. While not the highest end "gaming audiophile" set of cans, this headset is one of the best overall that I've ever used. The first thing that blew me away was the fit and finish. Even the package they come in is super refined and detailed. They have good weight to them, but not too heavy. You can definitely feel the quality in the build and finish here, Alienware did a great job. The ear cushions have padding for days. The ear cups are so soft and feel great, but they are not too soft or squishy, they have some density so they stay nice and firm and in place. The ear cups are also nice and large, they are truly over the ear. And while not noise cancelling, the shape and design of the earcups cuts ambient room noise down to a minimum letting you hear all the details in the sound. Even the headband has a nice soft rubber padded underside that when on, feels like the headband is not even there. Using these for long sessions felt great and i never got ear fatigue from having them on. And I even have a large head, and the phones never pinched or felt uncomfortable, they felt amazing the entire time. The audio sounds big and spacious. Details jump out at you and from deep lows to crips highs, everything was crystal clear. Setup was super easy, simply plug in the RF dongle, my Windows 10 machine recognized them right away, and Alienware's onboard software allows you to fully customize your soundscape. From EQ settings, overall and by different games, to differences between the sound profile for Gaming and Music/Entertainment, the controls were super easy to use. The 7.2 surround emulation is amazing also. During gaming sessions you can truly hear 360 degrees around you, and the low end really cuts through. Viewing movies and videos sounded amazing and gives you a deep immersive listening experience. Listening to music was pretty good, but maybe not quite as good as dedicated music headphones in this price range. The wireless charge easily outlasted me, and I never ran out of battery life, and they seem to charge super fast, even though "fast charging" is not something I saw in the spec sheet. The drop down boom mic is crystal clear and easily turns off and on when placed up or down.
This pair has become my new day to day gaming and entertainment headset, hands down. Amazing.

HP Delivers the Goods

Unobxing the laptop you can really feel the quality of the build design. The finish is gorgeous, what they call Dark Ash, almost like a slate grey. It’s pretty thin for this range of laptop, but not so thin you’ll be blown away. But you can really see how they spent time on the fit and finish of this one. It does weigh just under 5lbs which isn’t too heavy, at least by my standards, but not the lightest out there either. But accept some extra weight since this is a 15” display with 3 cell battery that should give up to 11 hours of life on a charge. It also has a hinged design to allow the laptop to convert to a touch screen tablet. The hinges seem very solid, made of metal, and should withstand years of use.
Setup was very easy. It runs Windows 10 of course, but this was my first laptop that walked me through initial setup using the Cortana voice interaction process. It was awesome. Cortana asks you a question, and you answer her, simple as that. After a few mins, and any necessary software or driver updates, you’re all set. I was blown away by the Cortana setup and how intuitive it was, and how accurate. If you’ve used Windows 10 you know what to expect from that so I won’t give any further review of the software, however the laptop does come with some neat integrations, like the HP support assistant. There is also a fair share of bloatware as well, but Windows 10 makes uninstalling all of the programs you don’t want or need a breeze.
The display is very good, not amazing, but for this range of laptop its a great screen. Full 1080p HD with touch screen capability. The colors were very good and pretty accurate. The brightness was pretty good, although I do wish it did get a just a tick brighter, especially when using this outdoors. While this isn’t a gaming laptop, games looked very clear and crisp and using desktop software and browsing the web, the display doesn’t miss a beat. The touch screen works incredibly well. Very responsive. There is also an AMD settings section that allows you custom tailor the screen and its performance. It also has a full size HDMI output to allow you to run an external monitor and it works great.
Performance is very solid. The Ryzen 5 chip seems to up to the challenge for anything you can throw at it. It also allows you to custom configure the thermal profile of the laptop, depending on the application or workflow you are using. You can set it to run cool, which will slow down overall performance; or you can set it to max performance with increased cooling and fans running to squeeze out the most capability possible – and a few other settings in between. I’ve tried them all and they seem to work great, and for the most part I leave mine set to the auto balance mode, which allows the computer to decide which performance profile to use based on what I’m doing at the time. The one area of performance that I wish was a little better was the wifi networking card. While I can maintain full 866.7 speed connections to my router, the actual download/upload speeds of the laptop can be inconsistent, or slightly below what I see on my other hardware around my house. I’ve played around with some settings to try and get a little better performance, but so far no luck. I’ll keep trying, but I’m using 1GB Comcast Xfinity service, and this laptop underperforms other computers in our home on wifi in the same location by 100-200 Mbps download.
I love the backlit keyboard here primarily because of the full size number pad. The keys feel tight and responsive and give that satisfying travel and click feedback as you type. The touch pad is also very nice, gives accurate feedback to finger gestures and also has a very nice click feedback on use. it’s also a great size, not too small and not too large. It also has Bang & Olufsen audio via stereo speakers. While the audio is not going to blow you away, for a laptop the audio is very good. Watching videos or playing games sounds great when using the built in audio, and you also have a headphone jack for wired listening too.
Overall this laptop is a feature rich powerhouse that for most people will be more than enough for their computing needs. The fit and finish is outstanding, similar to laptops much more expensive, and the performance does not disappoint.

Amazing power and sound. This receiver gives you just about everything you would want to drive a great home theater experience. The initial online setup was wonderful, the menu and user interface is very well designed, as you'd expect from Onkyo. Even the internet connectivity is great, the wifi chip in the receiver is very fast and was able to download the latest firmware amazingly quick. It comes with a microphone that helps you automatically tune your room to the best audio experience. The process is very simple and really brings out the best in the receiver and your home theater speakers.
It runs at 100W RMS so you have plenty of power, and the THD% is very low at only 0.08 so the only sound you hear is what you want to hear. Even at high volume with nothing playing, you don't notice the system is on, it's that quiet. There are all the inputs you'd expect, and plenty of them. Up to 7 HDMI inputs and 2 outputs and it supports 4K passthrough. I'm using the 4K passthrough with an Xbox One X for games and movies and it works great. Being able to utilize DTS X and TruHD along with Dolby Atmos is wonderful. I'm used to Atmos in the movie theater, but hearing it at home takes our movie watching to another level.
If there was anything I wish was a little different, it would be the receiver display and the remote control. the display is very basic, very legacy LCD number/text looking. I've seen displays that look very crisp and clear, almost like true HD screens, but this display is very basic. Not that big a deal though because you have the power of the on screen UI. And the remote control is very basic as well. Feels a little cheap in the hand and has "enough" controls on it, but i would have liked it to offer a few more.
Overall the sound and functionality of this Onkyo receiver is amazing, i've never heard my movies and music in such clarity and tone before, amazing.

The center channel speaker is the main component of any good home theater setup, and the one most people overlook. The R34C from Klipsch delivers amazing sound and tone quality that will draw you in to the action and dialogue on screen.
The build quality is wonderful, it’s built like a tank, which Klipsch products are known for. It does have some heft and size, so make sure you have the proper room and clearances for this speaker if you are setting on a tv stand, etc. It can also be mounted to the wall with included wall hanging hardware, for those clean, flush on the wall installs.
400W/100W RMS of power means that you can drive this speaker hard and it will deliver. Sound is always crisp and clear. With four 3.5" graphite woofers and a 1” tweeter, along with dual rear firing bass ports, this speaker can reproduce sounds and tones that used to take multiple speakers. And with it’s 2 way speaker system, the sound moving across the front of you is much more fluid than other center channel speaker in my opinion and has a very wide soundscape, perfect for movies.
You can leave the grill on the front for a more traditional look, or remove the grill and show off the copper injected molded cones that Klipsch is known for, for a more aggressive look. If you are starting your home theater and looking for a center channel, look no further than this one, you won’t be disappointed.

Movie Theater Sound in your Living Room

These speakers will literally transform your home theater space into a bona fide movie theater. Huge, quality built floor standing speakers with lots of power mean that you won't miss any sonic details. Drive these speakers with a quality receiver and hear your movies, shows and games like you never have before. These speakers have a wonderful frequency response range and can handle deep lows and super clear highs. Paired with other Klipsch Reference Series speakers it creates the ultimate sonic landscape. Build quality is outstanding, these speakers have heft. They feel solid and sound solid. Tones are clear and bright and bass is deep and tight. Remove the grill for an aggressive look thanks to Klipsch's copper colored speaker cones. Music sounds great as well when just using these as standard two channel stereo speakers. and with such high power it means you can add volume for days. These will be my main front of house speakers for years to come.

Great for rear surround

These speakers are great for rounding out your surround sound system as rear or side surrounds. Lots of power means you can drive these speakers hard and not worry about clipping. Sound is crisp and clear with plenty of low end for a speaker this size. My only complaint was that for me some of the top end sounded a little too thin, but overall these speakers are a perfect pair to add to your setup. These speakers have bulk to them, so plan accordingly in terms of the space needed to place them, but you won't be disappointed.

This camera is Great, except the actual video!
By Jason
I love everything about this camera. From the form and function to the ease of setup (less than 2 mins) to mounting it wherever I want. The app is great, the two way communication is great. The motion zones work perfectly once you get used to setting them based on your environment and traffic, etc. The cloud storage option is amazing considering what you get for the price you pay. Everything is amazing, except the actual video quality of the camera. It's supposed to be 720p. It is not, at least not the unit that I have. My video quality is so heavily pixelated most of the time, that it renders having this camera in the first place, useless. The image attached to this review is an completely unedited screen grab from a recent video recording. I've been working with the Ring support, and they have been great, however they kept almost insisting that the reason for the pixelation was due to my wi-fi connection. I have Xfinity cable internet with 100mbps downstream and 25mbps upstream, and I use a Linksys EA9500 router that is about 12-15 feet from where the camera is mounted. Wi-fi signal is not the issue at all. I exchanged speed test screen shots and other details with the Ring support, and after discussing with them they have advised me to return this unit and exchange it for another one. They have looked at my videos and agree the video quality should be better than what I'm seeing. So I will do that and update this review if I do see better results with the new unit. Wish me luck!
UPDATE
June 19, 2016
So I returned the previous unit and exchanged for a new one, at the advice of the Ring support team. The new unit is up and running and I can say the video is better. So far so good!

Nest Doorbell (Wired) lets you know who’s there, so you never miss a thing. It replaces your existing wired doorbell and delivers HD video and bright, crisp images, even at night. It’s designed to show you everything at your doorstep — people head to toe or packages on the ground. And with 24/7 streaming, you can check in anytime. Or go back and look at a 3-hour snapshot history to see what happened.*

How immediate is the notification to your smartphone? My current security has a slight delay but enough that the person is usually gone by time I try to respond.

In my use of the Nest Hello, if someone pushes the doorbell button, the notification is instantaneous, the Nest app chimes my phone alongside our doorbell chime ringing in the house.
