Cool and compact

I found myself liking this mouse much more than I expected. The build quality is very good and quite solid, and the buttons feel great for the most part. I found the side buttons (forward and back by default) required a bit more pressure than I’m accustomed to. The scroll wheel is a class by itself. Smooth and tight when in rachet mode. It spins fast and free with a quick flick of the finger or when changed to free mode by one button press.
I knew this would be a good travel mouse since that’s the concept as an “anywhere” mouse. I was concerned that it might be too small for everyday use, especially for those of us with large hands. However, I quickly found that I actually forgot I wasn’t using my larger desktop mouse. In addition, despite its small size, this mouse is packed with features.
The included USB C cable re-charges the battery from any source, and it’s rated at 70 days per charge. It can pair with three devices using either the included Logitech Unifying Receiver, or better yet, via Bluetooth, and there’s a button on the bottom that allows you to switch between devices. To really get the most from this mouse, you need to use the Logitech Options software. It lets you define the function of everything other than the left/right, and those definitions can be different based on the active program. It also supports Logitech Flow which lets you move the cursor between multiple devices as long as they are connected to the same WIFI network and all have the Options software installed. In effect almost like an extended desktop. Of course, the computers are functioning separately, but you can copy and paste between the separate screens. It’s a really cool feature.
This is a great mouse with lots of features packed into an easy to carry size. It may well become my primary mouse.

Great at cooking and crisping. OK at air frying
on September 22, 2020
Posted by: Capshroud
from Lawrence
We’ve been using that well-known brand of pressure cooker for a couple of years and really like it, but the larger 8-quart size plus the crisping lip on the new Crock-Pot Express made it enticing enough to try. Pressure cookers are fast and convenient, but some things would be better with the look and taste of being browned or roasted, not stewed. Also, the Express would offer an extra if it eliminates the need for a separate air fryer.
This is a big appliance, and with the additional crisping lid, it needs storage space beyond that of a typical pressure/slow cooker. That said, with an eight-quart capacity, it’s big enough to cook for a family of 4-6. However, when using it as an air fryer with the included rack (no basket), it’s capacity is rather limited, so you will need to fry several batches for a larger family.
The quality seems quite good, and there are plenty of pre-programmed buttons … one set for pressure, one set for slow cooking, and a couple of buttons for crisping and frying. As mentioned, there are two lids. One is the standard one you’re used to, and the other is the large crisper which plugs into the handles of the base unit eliminating the need to plug it in separately. It comes with a non-stick coated pot, a wire rack that can be flipped for two air frying heights, a rack to rest the hot crisper lid on when removed, and a plastic stirring spoon.
In use, the slow and pressure cooking options and performance are similar to other pots. I do have a concern that while easy to clean, the coated aluminum pot may not be as durable as a stainless steel pot. When the crisper lid is used, it automatically changes your cooking choice to air frying. It’s amazingly quiet compared to other air fryers I’ve used. That’s a big benefit since if you’re finishing a recipe by crisping, that extra step will be just before serving when you’re going to be in the kitchen. It’s also going to add 10 minutes or so to cooking time, so plan appropriately.
Beyond what other pressure cookers offer, this has the ability to crisp and brown slow and pressure cooked foods plus a somewhat limited air frying ability. If those features are a real plus to you and worth the extra cost, this is probably the best out there now. It depends on how and what you cook, so the decision is yours.

Excellent indoor grill

This is a versatile appliance. It grills, bakes, broils, air crisps, and dehydrates. It seems very well built, and it’s a nice looking unit, but as always, there are pluses and minuses.
As mentioned, the build quality seems quite good, and it’s large enough to cook steaks and such for a family. Its height is a bit limited, so I’m not sure a whole chicken would easily fit. It looks nice enough to leave out on your counter if you have space. It’s not exactly dainty and fairly heavy. My major complaint about storage is that you can’t put everything inside it at once. There’s a bottom pan that is used for all cooking modes. In addition, there’s the grill and an air frying basket. Either the grill or the basket has to be stored outside the unit. Just a little resizing would have allowed the basket to sit on top of the grill. I think that’s a design miss which could be easily fixed. Most air cookers are loud, and this one is no exception. Almost all the recipes call for preheating which takes 8-10 minutes. That plus cooking time means it’s going to be running at least 20 minutes or more. The pre-heating is primarily to get the thick grill hot so it sears the meat. It does that nicely, but be aware that the grill also takes a long time to cool. In its favor, the no-stick surfaces clean very easily. Just don’t use metal utensils or harsh scrubbers.
Of course, the purpose is to cook and especially to grill. That’s where the Ninja Grill excels. Steaks, chicken, and chops come out looking and tasting very much like they were grilled outside … seared on the outside and juicy inside. Basically, grilling is top-notchs, and the other air cooking functions are pretty typical. The large, easy to read control panel leads you through the settings … heat level, cooking method (grill, crisp, etc.), type of food, and degree of doneness (rare to well done). When operating manually, you set the cooking time. If you plug in the heat probe, it shifts to preset mode and cooks to a specific meat temperature. It even lets you know when it’s time to flip the meat (optional, but it makes for better grilling). When done, it tells you to remove the meat and gives a resting time count. We found that a setting toward more rare or a shorter cooking times gave better results, but your taste may vary. If it’s rainy or too cold to grill outdoors, you’re going to love this indoor, smokeless grill.

Excellent for the price

First, as advertised, these headphones are incredibly comfortable to wear. I was dubious since they are on the ear not over the ear, but the soft leather earpads are very kind to your ears. The app is quite nice and offers a lot of customizing plus some extra features as well. Pairing was very easy, and besides being able to memorize up to eight devices, they can also be paired to two devices simultaneously. That’s quite nice if you want to use them with both your phone and tablet. There’s no need to shut Bluetooth off on one to force the pairing to the other. However, I found with two devices connected there was a noticeable lag and loss of audio/video sync. There is no active noise cancellation, so look elsewhere if that’s high on your list.
The sound quality is quite good with full bass and clear midrange and highs. There’s one personal qualification here. If you wear behind the ear hearing aids like me, then on the ear headphones bypass your aids, and you’ll need to use the app’s custom tuning hearing test feature to get good sound. However, when you do, the result is very good.
There’s a lot to like here and a lot for the money. They aren’t like $500 Bose headphones, but they aren’t intended to be at $100. Comfort, sound quality, and build are quite nice. The app is full-featured, and the ability to custom tune them to your ears is a feature not typically found at this price. Lastly, they have a 50 hour per charge battery life. I haven’t used them long enough to verify this, but they definitely last a long while.

Solid value line headset

These guys are decent but certainly not world-class, but hey, they only cost $50. For the money, they offer a fair bit. They have average sound quality and build and include a nice zippered hard case and cables for charging or direct 3.5 mm plug-in use. The big extra is that they are also Bluetooth and have a 22 hour battery life per charge.
Pairing was straight forward and easy. Since they also have a retractable mic, you can talk while gaming or, when paired with your phone, have a conversation. They’re not bad for listening to music, but you need to switch them to music mode to have decent base. The default game mode is heavy on midrange and highs with very little bass.
As far as gaming they are fairly good with very little latency when using Bluetooth. I used them with my Omen laptop and an Xbox One controller. They worked great with both the controller and headphones connected by Bluetooth. However, if you want to plug them into the controller, the controller needs to be connected to the PC via USB. That’s a controller issue, and with the low latency, there’s really no need to make a wired connection.
The bottom line is that they offer a lot for a little money. Serious gamers will buy on up the food chain, but for beginners or occasional use, they are a good buy.

Great for home or home office

The Talk Pro is a good looking desktop microphone. I was surprised at its lightweight which is due to its all-plastic construction. I that regard, I’d suggest it’s intended to stay on your desk and not be banged around and transported like more durable metal-encased mics. It has the size and looks of a professional mic, and it does take up some desk space. Being a USB unit, it gets its power from the computer, but the 10 foot braided cable gives a lot of flexibility in placement. That plus controls for gain and aux output volume on the unit free you from needing to be being next to the computer while using.
Installation is simple since it requires no extra drivers to be loaded. My only complaint is that it automatically switches both the computer’s default audio input and output to the Talk Pro. That means if you don’t want to use headphones plugged into the unit for sound monitoring, you have to go to sound settings and make the change. This happens each time you plug the unit in unless you disable its output in your settings. I'd rather it ask first. I don’t know if this happens on a Mac since my test was with a Windows 10 desktop and laptop. I must add that I called tech support about this issue and found them accessible, friendly, and knowledgeable.
The sound quality is good, and it has good noise reduction to cut extraneous ambient sound. I felt this came at the cost of a bit of a soft sound. To be fair, it has four directional settings… cardioid (front), stereo, omni, and bidirectional (front/back) … and I didn’t test all of these on music or full-spectrum sound. I did use the aux out to connect to my Sony mirrorless camera, and it worked perfectly which makes it well suited for vlogging. It definitely is much superior to any built-in webcam mic.
JLab Audio looks to be taking Yeti and others head-on in the USB microphone business. The Talk Pro with 192kHz/24BIT resolution makes it a potential competitor of the Yeti Pro. Its performance is quite good, but it’s not a match to the professional construction of the Yeti. However, it does cost $100 less. The Talk Pro offers a whole lot of performance and flexibility as well as value for the money … especially for the home or home office user.

Almost perfect
on July 11, 2020
Posted by: Capshroud
from Lawrence
With this current redesign of the Omen line, HP has decided to broaden the appeal of their gaming laptops. Gone is the faceted, thick, razzle-dazzle gamer look. As it sits on your desk, it could be nearly any current medium to high-end laptop. When opened, you know it’s something else as the multi-colored keyboard lights up (You can change the colors or turn them off as you wish.) This means the new Omen can fit in as a home or office laptop, while at the same time, it’s still a very powerful gamer.
The build quality is good and it looks fairly high end. The feel is solid with one notable exception. The screen/top is plastic and has quite a bit of flex open or closed. There’s a solid array of ports including both an HDMI and display port to power any external monitors or displays. Also included are 3 USB Type A, 1 USB Type C, a full-sized SD card reader (hurray), an ethernet connection, headphones, and power port. Yes, it charges with a round power port not USB C, but for a reason. The included power supply is a big 200W which is needed to keep up with the demand of this powerful machine when its guns are blazing. Along this line, nearly half of the bottom is an air intake for the two big fans, and the entire rear is an exhaust grill.
This is a fast and very powerful laptop that keeps up with every game I threw its way. Project Cars and Crew 2 couldn’t even make it breath heavy. Bluetooth pairing with my Xbox One controller was flawless, and I noticed no delay while playing. The screen is 1920 x 1080 (truthfully enough for a 15” screen), and it’s bight, sharp and fast. I hooked up a 4K external monitor and ran different full resolution videos on both screens simultaneously without any issues. If you’re reading this review, you’ve already looked at the system specs, so I won’t repeat them. However, one big improvement they’ve made in the Omen line is the new and improved thermals. Most of the time it’s fairly quiet, but push things hard and those fans will spool up, but they will keep the unit and the keyboard comfortable. You and the internals don’t get cooked.
So you get a ton of power, what don’t you get compared to a mid/high end “regular” laptop? Even though there are a decent cam and mic, you don’t get face recognition or a fingerprint reader. The keyboard and trackpad are quite good but not class-leading. The same goes for the B&O speakers. They can be very loud and clear but no bass. If you want thunderous explosions or music, it’s time for good headphones or some exterior speakers. With Bluetooth 5, you can do that without wires and get high-quality sound.
I definitely like this laptop and would recommend it. I can be both a work and play machine with its understated appearance and exceptional power. I’d say it might be the perfect student computer, but the flexy screen/top gives me pause in that regard. Only time will tell if that becomes an issue. HP has really upped their game with this version of the Omen … power, appearance, and cool running.

If you want a keyboard. this is the one
on July 2, 2020
Posted by: Capshroud

This is as nice a keyboard case as I’ve ever used. The build quality is excellent as is the fit. All buttons and controls are reflected though and work without a lot of extra effort. The keyboard cover magnetically snaps onto the iPad and instantly functions flawlessly. No batteries or charging is required since it’s powered by the tablet. It’s good that it snaps on and off easily because when you’re hand-holding your iPad and not using the keyboard, you really want it off and out of the way. When it’s closed, the fit is great without play, and it provides complete protection. You’ll feel confident carrying it or tossing it in a backpack.
It’s very easy to use. Open it and the iPad comes on. Pull the hinged back flap out, and it holds the pad at whatever angle you wish. This hinged flap is functionally just like the MS Surface Pro and works every bit as well. The backlit keyboard has a good touch, and the trackpad is large and responsive. This case turns your iPad Air or Pro into a mini laptop.
The bottom line is that is does everything it’s designed to do and does it to near perfection. The one conundrum that’s just the nature of keyboard cases is that it takes that elegantly thin iPad Air and bulks it up and size and weight, and this case is heavy. However, you get great physical protection. If you do a lot of emails or want to write reports and such, this is an excellent choice.

Simple to install and use
on June 19, 2020
Posted by: Capshroud
from Lawrence
The EufyCam 2 system has two major claims to fame. The cameras are wireless with batteries rated to last one year on a charge, and video is stored locally so no monitoring service or fee is needed. This means no wiring and no monthly fees. This kit comes with two cameras, but the system can handle up to six.
The cameras seem very solid and well built. Installation and setup are very straight forward if you follow the simple instructions. You must install the Eufy Security app on your phone or tablet (unfortunately there is no PC app yet) and establish an account. Then the base station has to be connected to your router with the included ethernet cable for the initial setup and firmware update. The cameras are then paired to the base. Apparently, the base station acts as a WIFI extender and can be moved to a different location after this process is completed. This might be helpful if you’re having range issues and maintaining a connection, but the ethernet connection is recommended. During the setup, you name your base and cameras. For example … Joeshome, front door, backyard, etc. At this point, you install the cameras. Both magnetic (indoor) mounts and screw-on mounts are provided. The app will check the connection and let you know to the signal is good enough. I’ve had no issue with range even with the base on my second floor and a camera set behind my detached garage probably 75 feet away.
The base has 16 GB of internal memory, and all recorded video with audio is saved locally. I haven’t tried it, but the system claims to be compatible with Apple Homekit as well as Alexa and Google Assistant. The video quality is quite nice and in color when well lighted or in daylight, and it’s acceptable at night when using its own infrared lighting. As with any very wide-angle camera, there’s a lot of barrel distortion. I believe the field of view was stated as 140 degrees. The app is fairly full-featured with control for motion sensitivity, defined view areas for motion detection, alarms, push notifications, home and away modes, schedule by the time of day, live viewing and a talk feature. There’s even a geofencing mode that can be used to automatically activate features when your phone leaves home. The system has the AI ability to be set to only activate and record when it detects humans. That saves a lot of unnecessary video of animals and such.
Wherever you are … remote or at home, you can receive real-time push notifications and access the cameras live or recorded events. There’s quite a lot packed into a small and simple to use package, and I would recommend it to a friend as a basic home monitoring and security system. Whether the one-year battery charge is accurate will take some while to verify. If there were a PC app and higher cam resolution with less distortion, this would be near perfect system. As it is, it’s pretty darn good.

Very good, not great

The build quality of the bar is first class and the sub-woofer is decent. I liked the remote which lets you switch directly to various modes … Standard, Cinema, Music, Voice, Night, Immersive, and Auto. It automatically found the wireless sub and connected, and was easy to pair with a phone or other Bluetooth device. You’ll want to use an ARC enabled HDMI connection to your TV for best results. Since I have a Sony TV and 4K player, it was flawless in using Bravia sync for HDMI control of all devices. Just turn on the DVD player, and the TV and soundbar come on ready to play. The G700 does have eARC capability which is the new and improved system that allows non-compressed Dolby and DTS audio to be sent from the TV to the bar over HDMI.
As far as sound, and that’s what it’s all about, my results were varied. When playing a 4K Blueray with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, it was fairly impressive and begs you to push the sound level up. The electronic magic worked, and those three speakers in the bar made for an “immersive” sound. Not quite like having discrete rear and up-firing speakers, but it was impressive and closer than you might expect to multiple speakers. However, with streaming sources, it was a mixed bag. Sometimes there was a lack of spatial definition which muddled the sound and made dialog hard to hear. Sometimes the center channel seemed harsh and overdriven, and often there was no discernable rear channel sound. I did find that it generally sounded better if you keep the “immersive” feature enabled. To be fair, TV sound and streamed network shows often don’t have the best soundtracks. It did make me wish the menu system offered a way to adjust balance and equalization. The sound level is separately adjustable for the sub-woofer, but I still wanted a bit more punch.
Perhaps I expected too much from a 3.1 system using electronic wizardry to simulate up to 7.2 Dolby Atmos sound. The sound from this system just isn’t a true Atmos experience. I found the G700 to be very good but not great. It offers a way to get some three-dimensional experience with a very compact system and at a price less than more complicated, multiple speaker systems. If you’re coming from listening through TV speakers or an older soundbar, it will blow you away.

There's a lot good about this tablet. It has a lot for the price such as a beautiful high-rez screen, a fast processor, really good battery life, and it comes with Android 6 Marshmallow (more about that).
A minor irritation is that the hardware navigation buttons are not illuminated. In a low light situation, you have to just know where they are.
The biggest weakness is that it only comes with 16 GB of internal memory. It does support SD cards up to 200 GB. However, I found that Samsung has chosen to NOT support adopted memory in their version of Marshmallow. This is true for all Sammy devices. This means you don't have the option of expanding that paltry 16 GB ... half of which is used by the system and Samsung's baked in apps and overlay.
The bottom line is that this is a fine home or kid's tablet, but you shouldn't confuse it with a real working tablet. Perhaps they just didn't want to steal too much thunder from their $400-500 offerings.
I'd almost give this 4 stars and would recommend it with the limitations mentioned.

Yes, you can move some apps to the SD card. That ability has been around for a while, but it's not the same thing as Android 6 adopted memory. It's slower, some apps can be moved but they won't work exactly right ... especially after a reboot. Many still keep a lot of data and cache in internal memory. It's a work around.

Adopted memory

Navigator is correct that slow memory can slow the system when using external memory as an extension of internal memory. That's why Android 6 (not Samsung's version) gives you the choice of using the SD card as adopted or portable memory, AND it checks the card's speed and warns if it's too slow to work well. This slow down also happens when moving apps to the card as described by other users.
As I said in my review, this is still a very good tablet. It's probably the best out there for the money. It just didn't meet my needs.

Is this a fast laptop in other words does it lag and how quickly does it turn on? Can you give me some examples as to the speed of the processing of different apps or going into a browser for example? My broadband goes up to 300 megs so it's a fast Wi-Fi.

It's very fast and near the top of its class for the hardware used. I tested it with Novabench and got an overall of 1750. The only weak link is the onboard video which just isn't strong enough for high-end gaming on video processing. It has WIFI 6 and Bluetooth 5, so it will make use of your fast broadband.

where is the micro phone? can it be used for a call center?

The mic retracts into the right side. As far as using them at a call center, I think they're a bit lightweight for all-day commercial use.
