Not for me

There are a few good things about this mouse, but for me, they didn't make up for its shortcomings. On the plus side the build quality is high, the resolution can be set amazingly high, and the ceramic feet really let it glide easily across any surface. Perhaps too well since the cursor didn’t anyways stay where I wanted it.
The big shortfall is the Lexip Control Panel software which is exceptionally buggy and sometimes unstable. Without the software, this is just a standard mouse, so there is no alternative. First-person support is non-existent at Lexip leaving you with only a couple of YouTube tutorials for guidance. However, the videos were outdated and didn’t show the current software version which has a very different interface. Although pleasant to the ear, the French accent of the narrator did not make the learning experience any easier. I found trial and error to be the basic tools to work through an incredible number of variables and settings.
It did work fine in programs where all you want to use is the side joystick for scrolling and the forward and back buttons for navigation. However, my real test and the reason I wanted to try this mouse was for use with Sketchup Pro … one of the programs listed in their promotions. Once you figure out how to download and load the application’s profile, it shifts to that profile when the program starts. Whoever wrote the profile couldn’t have been a serious SU user because it was a hot mess. The intention was to use the two joysticks for 3D navigation, but some basic controls were lost. Overall, Sketchup works much better and has better control with a standard mouse or one with a few programmable extras. Perhaps I don’t have the patience and motor skills, but the second joystick function which is implemented by tilting the mouse body front to back and side to side was hard to control and tended to be accidentally activated.
This mouse may be a great concept, but for my use, it was not ready for prime time. It’s primarily marketed as a gaming mouse, and there may be some great applications in that area.

This isn’t an inexpensive speaker, but sound quality not low price is what Bose is all about. They’ve been making quality headphones and speakers for years, and more recently, smart home speakers. Now comes the combination of portable and smart, and true to Bose, they did it well.
The build quality is first class including the 3A power supply/charger and 5 foot USB C to USB C cable. The size and weight along with a battery rated at 12 hours of playtime make it truly portable. That’s the same battery life as their Revolve speaker. However, the sound quality is comparable to the Bose 300 series home speakers, and that’s a big step up. As with the Revolve, the sound is truly 360. You don’t have to search for a sweet spot for you or the speaker. The sound is clean and strong in all directions. It’s rated IPX4, so it can withstand some splashing water but not falling into the pool.
The setup using the Bose Music app was quick and easy as it leads you through the entire process. You’ll need to sign on or create a Bose account while in the app. You’ll log onto your home WIFI, and then you can sign onto your streaming accounts … Amazon, Pandora, Spotify (premium only), and an array of TuneIn options. All of these are then accessible from that one app. As a smart speaker, it can be set to be either an Alexa or Google Assistant device. It’s also easy to connect your phone via Bluetooth which you’ll use when away from your WIFI. I had a problem finding a particular setting in the app, but Bose phone support was fast and efficient … the best I’ve experienced in some while.
The sound quality is what you’d expect from Bose. Strong bass, clean and clear mids and highs, and all the volume you’ll want. Since it’s comparable to the Home 300 speaker in quality, it can function as part of an existing Bose system if you wish. You can’t miss with this speaker. It’s a real Bose and provides an amazing amount of music from a small device.

This is quite a machine and my first medium to high-end coffee/espresso maker. I have the black version, and I find it quite attractive. The build quality is high as you would expect at this price, and it looks great just sitting out on the counter. It does fit easily under upper cabinets, but it’s not a dainty or lightweight machine. Make sure you have a good place for it to stay. The real claim to fame for this unit lies in two areas. First, it does everything for you cup by cup … grinds the beans, presses them down, pressure brews, and then dumps the used grounds in an enclosed waste hopper. Second, it can brew (infuse) iced coffee at a much lower temperature and avoid melting so much ice that you have no flavor or body left. That function works pretty well, but I find you’re going to want to set the brew strength to the max for best results.
Everything is controlled by a nicely laid out touchpad. At the touch of a button, you have a choice to brew expresso and expresso lungo in both single and doubles, as well as “True Brew Over Ice”, longs (Americano style drip) and just hot water. You can adjust the default brew-strength individually for each type and override that setting for personal tastes each time you brew a cup. There’s a milk heater/frother for lattes and cappuccino. However, I found the frothing ability to be average at best. The nozzle is a bit short, and it apparently uses the same heating circuit as the brewing side since you can’t do both things at once.
Setup was reasonable with a good quick-start flyer to walk you through the basics of getting your first few cups. They suggest that it will take 3-5 cups for the machine to settle in and adjust itself. It’s easy to use, but plan some time to read the entire manual because everything is adjustable. Brew strength, amount of water, temperature, bean grind, shut down timeout, and more. The touch screen control area will also tell you when you need water, when you need to add beans, when to dump the grounds, and when the unit needs to be cleaned or descaled. As I said … automatic. To keep the system clean, it also runs some water out every time it starts up or shuts down, so keep a cup under it if you don’t want the bottom spill tray filling too quickly.
So what about the coffee quality? At its defaults, every variety is very good. When you spend a little time to dial things in to your personal taste and the beans you’re using, it can make truly excellent coffees. You can’t expect an automatic machine to match a good professional barista, but it will outperform most homebrewers, and it’s push-button easy. Since it has double nozzles for coffee, the X2 (double) feature lets you brew two expressos at a time … or one big jolt for you … and they are superb expressos. Many Americans aren’t looking for an expresso to start the day, but its Americano coffee made from freshly ground beans with a slight bit of expresso style cream on top will make you forget about coffee pods. Everything about this machine is five stars with the exception of the milk frother. That issue is not enough to knock its rating down unless cappuccino is your only thing.

A great value

I’ve previously used APC backups at my office, however, this UPS is not built for commercial use or requirements. There’s no software for any type of configuration or a USB connection for monitoring and on-screen or network alarms. This is an inexpensive personal or home UPS backup, so it’s important to understand what it’s capabilities and intended uses are.
The BE425M comparatively small capacity unit with a total allowable draw of 255W and 425 VA of power. It can keep a computer and monitor running for a few minutes, or it can power a modem and router for a reasonable amount of time. I tested it with my desktop and one monitor and was able to keep running for 16 minutes under light usage before the low battery alarm sounded. Powering a modem and router I would expect an hour or so of use. This is adequate for short power losses and gives you plenty of time to safely shut things down. Keep in mind that routers run continually, and computers and monitors are often in standby modes and not actually off when unused. If you expect a longer outage and want any power left when you need it, you’ll need to shut all connected items completely off and manage the usage yourself.
The build quality seems good, but it’s not the heavy, bulletproof design of the commercial units. The battery is not intended to be user-replaceable. I expect that when the battery wears out, it’s time to get a new unit. There are six outlets. All are surge protected and four are on the backup system. Those four are spaced apart enough to allow most power bricks to plug in next to one another.
In my test, the switch over was without glitches or any problem. It also will switch to battery (stable power) on low or high voltage events, so if you’re in an area prone to brownouts or spikes, it might be just the protection you need. If you’ve ever had a file or drive scrambled or a firmware update bricked by a power glitch, this will seem like incredibly cheap insurance.

Very good with some limitations

I think the best way to review this new Shark cordless vac is by stating what it is, and what it does well, and what it’s not.
It has Shark’s typical excellent build quality and ease of use. It's well enough packaged to survive even rough shipping, and it’s simple to assemble. Snap-in the wand and connect the beater head for upright use, or just snap on an attachment for handheld use. All the parts snap in place with locking connectors, so pieces aren’t going to fall off. The only other part is the charger since the battery is built-in. It’s also amazingly light and easy to use. With the beater head, there are two settings on the power switch … bare floors and carpet. The only other control is the “turbo” trigger for increased power (and short battery life). The low profile head is good for getting under furniture and low items. It’s also bagless and easy to empty, but do that over a large wastebasket or such to control dust and spill. As a handheld, without the long upright tube, it’s exceptionally light and easy to use. I found this great for stairs, and it would be pretty decent as a car vac. As with all Shark vacuums, it has LED headlights on the beater assembly which are actually a great help in cleaning.
What it’s not, in my opinion, is a whole-house upright vacuum. The run time is listed as up to 40 minutes, but that’s without the powered beater head. Battery time drops to 20 minutes in that mode, and down to 10 minutes with the turbo switch activated. The battery is built-in, so there’s no swapping in another if you run out of juice. There’s just the slow, plug-in charger and a few hours wait time. It doesn’t have Shark’s excellent no hair clogging head, and it just doesn’t have the power and suction of a corded upright. A strange omission in my mind is that there is no way or provision to hang it up for storage and charging. It cannot stand upright on its own, but it can be leaned against a wall. With that said, keep in mind that it’s about half the price of that famous English brand.
In conclusion, it’s a quick, easy and very lightweight stand up vacuum for spot jobs, and for those in-between times when you don’t want to haul out the big, corded vac. It would be easy for kids to operate to clean up spills and such. Being very lightweight also makes it a great hand vac for cars, stairs and such. If you live in a small house or apartment, it could be the only vacuum you need.

Good basic drive for the money
on August 23, 2019

My, but isn’t hard drive based storage getting cheap. With that, there’s no excuse for not backing your computer or at least your personal data. At 5 TB this is more than enough for any computer backup or the largest collection of photos and videos. If you need more space to store your games, this is a good solution there as well. If you’re interested, it comes with a one-year subscription to mylio as well as basic backup software and utilities. This is the current iteration of the Backup Plus drive system that been around a few years. It comes formatted as exFAT which makes it compatible with a lot of devices.
On the downside, there is no hardware data encryption, so if that’s a deal-breaker, you’ll have to look elsewhere and pay more. It’s a USB 3.0 drive with a micro-b connection on the unit and a USB Type A connection for your computer or device. Type A ports are vanishing on some new laptops as USB C and Thunderbolt takes over. Being USB 3.0, the general transfer speed seems about half of what my USB C 3.1 external drive can maintain.
This is a basic external hard drive with a lot of capacity for the money and some perks and basic software thrown in. With massive data transfers, you might notice the slower USB 3.0 speed, but for typical backup, game and media storage, it will do the job.

Great for 1-2 people

We’ve only had a chance to cook a few things, but so far the results have been mostly good. Using the included recipes, we have cooked chicken nuggets, spiced shrimp and battered green beans. For anything that’s intended to be “fried”, some spray oil is required to get the fried effect. Panko bread crumbs and egg are the go-to breading in the recipes. Both the chicken and shrimp were very good. The beans were so-so at best, but I struggled with the breading.
The unit cooks fast (typically 5-15 minutes), but as far as size, it’s a one or two-person cooker. If you have a family to feed, I suggest buying a larger unit. It may be called out as 3.7 quarts, but with many things, you can only cover the 8” round grill with food. The chicken took 10 minutes and the shrimp 5. Even at that, I’ll cut the time down a little the next time. Most things require a shake or stirring up halfway through to get even cooking.
It came well packaged, and it’s decent looking in a small black keg sort of way. I say it’s generally the size of a slow cooker. The controls are digital and let you set time and temperature. There are no presets for various types of food, so you need to use a recipe or trial and error. It’s moderately loud, and a fair amount of heat exhausts at the rear, so it needs to be pretty much out in the open when running.
It’s great for small to moderate batches of healthy food (compared to deep or pan frying). It’s fast and uses less energy than an oven or stove. I’m planning on trying more variety of foods since to see just what all it can do.

Needs some work
on July 30, 2019
Posted by: Capshroud
from Lawrence
I have mixed thoughts about this camcorder. Its claim to fame is in being waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freeze-proof. As a rugged outdoor camera, it gives you a lot more options than those ubiquitous action cameras or any cell phone. It does this by being a full-featured consumer camcorder. You can take video and stills with a 40:1 optical zoom, time-lapse, tele-macro, self-timer and so on. It can be fully auto or provide manual control over focus, exposure, white balance, backlight compensation, etc. It does all this while being capable of shooting underwater and tolerating drops, snow, sand and general abuse.
What are my reservations? I found the 40:1 zoom is only useful up to about 20:1 while handheld. Go beyond that and it better be on a tripod, and the focus seemed to hunt at times. The stabilization has three levels, but it’s digital and cuts down the image area as it becomes more aggressive. It’s possible that optical stabilization wouldn’t be able to withstand the shock and drop resistance, but there’s still a quality loss. As far as quality, this camera shoots in 1920 x 1080 HD in either 60i or 60p. If you want 4K, you’ll need to look elsewhere and spend a lot more. The 60p mode gives nice smooth video, and that’s what I mostly used. However, there are no size or quality variations when shooting 60p, and some of the special features only work in 60i mode. On the plus side, the internal battery lasts up to 5 hours it has 4GB of internal memory and will accept SD cards, but only up to 128GB. Don’t wait until the last minute to charge it up. A full charge can take up to 6 hours.
The build quality seems good and it’s quite small and easy to carry. The only buttons are the start/stop and the zoom rocker. Everything else is controlled through the touch screen. The screen feels a bit unresponsive, but that’s due to it being a pressure response and not a capacitive screen. That apparently was necessary to be able to use it down to its maximum of 5 meters underwater.
To make use of its variety of features, it’s really necessary to download the full manual and do some reading. It comes with no software, but when you connect it to your computer, it shows up as a mass storage device. Any video editing system which accepts AVCHD format will handle the .MTS files it generates. The stills are standard jpg. The technology feels a bit dated because it is. In reality, this is a rebadged JVC Everio camera that’s been around for several years. It seems to me to be a big miss not to have provided an easy way to directly upload files to social media. Canon could have done a little updating to make it more current.
The bottom line to me is that this is very much a niche product. If you want to take videos in places you wouldn’t risk a regular camcorder or your $1000 phone, it fills that bill. You do need to be a bit tech-savvy and understand video editing.

Sony can absolutely build some beautiful and high tech products, and these in-ear headphones are just that. The build quality of the earphone and the charging case is superb. The appearance is sexy and modern, and along with that, the sound quality is the best I’ve heard from earbuds.
The packaging is very nice but not overdone. The instructions are minimalist for sure, but if you install the Sony Headphones app as instructed, it will lead you through the setup and pairing. I found the process easy and painless, and the pairing worked on the first attempt. The app also lets you shape and control the sound and reassign a couple of button functions. It also lets you set the amount of ambient sound passed through, turn ambient off, and turn noise canceling on. That selection can also be changed by the touchpads on the buds. However, the same button press is used to cycle these selections or to trigger Google Assistant, so you have to decide which function you want at your fingertip. The app is the only method to shape sound and equalization, but there are a number of presets, and they all can be modified. You can absolutely make these guys sound the way you want, and that sound is fabulous.
The buttons on the buds are capacitive touch and not physical buttons. That would make you think that these earphones are waterproof, but not so. If you’re working out and get very sweaty, these may not be for you. In my mind, they are aimed at daily work, commuting, relaxing and phone use. They even have the ability to detect the environmental noise level and adjust the amount of ambient sound passed through. If you use the foam earbud covers to seal them to your ears, the noise canceling is better then many over the ear headphones. BTW, they include two types of ear inserts in three sizes each.
The case will completely recharge the buds up to three times, so with a 6-8 hour per charge running time (noise-canceling cuts the run time) and three charges, you’re good for a long while. The case also has NFC, so you can quickly pair to any particular device with a touch.
Controlling ambient and noise-canceling are the areas were these Sony wireless in-ear headphones are absolutely the leader and probably in a class their own. I think the sound and music quality is equal to the best anyone offers in earbuds wired or not. These are first-class earphones.

Great idea but some flaws
on July 3, 2019
Posted by: Capshroud
from Lawrence
This is a great idea … I’ll give Hoover an A for the concept of a small, cordless wet/dry vac. Unfortunately, I think they missed a bit on the actual design and execution, so they only get a C there.
The vac could be mistaken for a medium/large toolbox or tackle box. It’s reasonably lightweight, and the hose and attachments all dock neatly. I found the suction to be good for a battery vacuum and much better than the small handheld units we all know, but it’s certainly not in the category of a corded utility vac. I got this to keep in the garage for cleaning the cars and my work area. The hose length was probably determined by its docking space on the top of the vac, and it stretches to 5 feet or so. This means you need to set it inside your car to reach some areas. At 10x12x18 it’s just a little large to not bang around some when doing this. Not having to drag a cord around is a big plus (they always hang up under the tires), and that is a trade-off against the somewhat short hose.
There are two issues that bring this vac down an extra star. The first is that Hoover decided to package a low capacity battery in it. With only 2 AH of battery power, you only get around 10 minutes of run time, and it takes several hours to recharge. Hoover lists a 3 AH spare battery for this system, but the price is $99. That’s a typical problem with proprietary lithium battery packs. They are often very pricey. The other issue or aggravation is that the friction fit attachments come off rather easily while you’re vacuuming.
Had Hoover packaged this with the larger battery, I would have rated it at 4 stars. As is, I can only give it 3. I’d recommend it to a friend as long as they can live with the 10 minute run time.

There's a lot good about this tablet. It has a lot for the price such as a beautiful high-rez screen, a fast processor, really good battery life, and it comes with Android 6 Marshmallow (more about that).
A minor irritation is that the hardware navigation buttons are not illuminated. In a low light situation, you have to just know where they are.
The biggest weakness is that it only comes with 16 GB of internal memory. It does support SD cards up to 200 GB. However, I found that Samsung has chosen to NOT support adopted memory in their version of Marshmallow. This is true for all Sammy devices. This means you don't have the option of expanding that paltry 16 GB ... half of which is used by the system and Samsung's baked in apps and overlay.
The bottom line is that this is a fine home or kid's tablet, but you shouldn't confuse it with a real working tablet. Perhaps they just didn't want to steal too much thunder from their $400-500 offerings.
I'd almost give this 4 stars and would recommend it with the limitations mentioned.

Yes, you can move some apps to the SD card. That ability has been around for a while, but it's not the same thing as Android 6 adopted memory. It's slower, some apps can be moved but they won't work exactly right ... especially after a reboot. Many still keep a lot of data and cache in internal memory. It's a work around.

By Capshroud from Lawrence

Adopted memory
August 11, 2016
Navigator is correct that slow memory can slow the system when using external memory as an extension of internal memory. That's why Android 6 (not Samsung's version) gives you the choice of using the SD card as adopted or portable memory, AND it checks the card's speed and warns if it's too slow to work well. This slow down also happens when moving apps to the card as described by other users.
As I said in my review, this is still a very good tablet. It's probably the best out there for the money. It just didn't meet my needs.

Can this record live tv ? And can I watch another channel while it is recording ?

This is just a streaming device like Ruku or Fire Stick. It has no recording or other functions.

Is this a fast laptop in other words does it lag and how quickly does it turn on? Can you give me some examples as to the speed of the processing of different apps or going into a browser for example? My broadband goes up to 300 megs so it's a fast Wi-Fi.

It's very fast and near the top of its class for the hardware used. I tested it with Novabench and got an overall of 1750. The only weak link is the onboard video which just isn't strong enough for high-end gaming on video processing. It has WIFI 6 and Bluetooth 5, so it will make use of your fast broadband.

where is the micro phone? can it be used for a call center?

The mic retracts into the right side. As far as using them at a call center, I think they're a bit lightweight for all-day commercial use.
