Stable and reliable
on October 26, 2023
Posted by: pinkoos
After multiple days of testing / using this adapter in my daily workflow, I can attest to the fact that it's reliable and stable and provides fast connection speeds as intended. This doesn't seem to be a complicated product to produce so one would hope that it can function reliably and so far it has. Build quality is solid. I didn't see any readily apparent manufacturing defects or issues that one may see when buying something similar from other retailers. My internet connection is, on paper, 800 down and about 25 up. With this adapter, I was actually hitting anywhere from 750 to a bit over 800 down and consistently 23 up. So, to me, that's a good thing. In my use, I haven't felt the adapter heating up or displaying any other outwardly apparent concerns. All in all, I think this is a completely capable ethernet adapter at a generally fair price. There are many products in this category so pick whichever one works the best for your situation. If it turns out to be this one, you won't be let down.

Works great, delivers as promised

I can't really find anything wrong with this USB-C cable. I'm not techie enough to have the tools or the know-how to actually measure file transfer speeds and other factors, but this cable works just as it is supposed to as far as I can tell. The build quality is nice and braided cables are all the rage now. The connectors on both ends are firm and tight when plugged into corresponding USB-C ports - I don't detect any give or wiggle and the sleeves surrounding the connectors don't seem to be too big or thick to the point that they wouldn't fit snugly into the female end of a USB-C port. The price seems to be right for these cables as well - definitely more economical than other name brands where it's anybody's guess whether the extra you're paying is actually getting you more bang for the buck or just getting you the name brand. All in all, whether you're out shopping for a new cable or just impulse buying a cable (esp. considering the price) I don't think you can go wrong with this brand.

Couple things make this good instead of great
on September 21, 2023

So the build quality on this hub / dock is great as is usually the case with Satechi products. I have another Satechi device and they definitely don't skimp on premium materials. So I see this as an absolute positive. In terms of versatility, this hub provides fairly industry-standard ports as one can see in the product overview - no need for me to go over that here. As for practical, everyday use, there are a couple issues I have. First off, the port that supplies the power to the connected computer (in my case an Apple Mac) is on the front of the Satechi. I'm not sure why this design decision was made as it makes for a not so clean and sleek look, depending on how you arrange the hub vs the location of your computer. I would have much preferred this port to be on the back. The other thing I'm not a big fan of is the size of the power supply. I guess the size of the box should've given it away that there was something big in there as the pictured size of the actual hub wouldn't account for the large size of the box. Anyway, I guess I understand that a big power supply is needed in order to provide the 60W but I wonder if the PS had been built into the hub how much larger it would have made it. So, if you're considering the portable nature of this hub, keep in mind that you will also need to lug around the power supply.

A ridiculously short cord is unfortunate
on September 10, 2023
Posted by: pinkoos
This is a good grill that could've even been great but for some unknown reason, the electrical cord provided is ridiculously short. From the owner's manual, Ninja states, "A short power-supply cord is used to reduce the risk of children grabbing the cord or becoming entangled and to reduce the risk of people tripping over a longer cord." I don't quite understand this statement. First, the grill is placed on a countertop which would, in and of itself, be out of reach for children of the age that would be tempted to grab a power cord. Secondly, the grill is placed on a countertop so, unless one plans on walking on said countertop, I can't imagine a situation where someone would trip over a longer cord. I'm making an issue out of this because we have an older kitchen that doesn't have outlets all over the place. As a result, we've had to rearrange the placment of our microwave, toaster and toaster oven just to be able to accommodate this grill in a location suitable to us. In my mind, if I have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get a product to work in my situation, that's a bad sign. And, I can't be the only one with an older kitchen. I'm left to wonder why my other small kitchen appliances don't have a short cord too if the concern is kids and grabbing and people tripping. In addition to this negative, this grill is a bit overpriced for what it does and how it does it.
Fortunately it's not all bad, there are some redeeming qualities - it's easy to use and easy to clean; the grill and griddle plates are easily changeable; and, the splatter cover is a nice feature.

Great brand, fast speed, small size
on August 24, 2023
Posted by: pinkoos
So some background - I've been buying Crucial RAM ever since I can remember, back in the days when Macs were upgradeable. So, I've always been loyal to this brand and this time is no different. The first thing that struck me is how small and light the drive is. However, it's still imbued with some density, so it feels solid and not cheap. I'm in the process of slowly changing out my standard spinning hard disks connected to my Mac to solid state drives and that's where this Crucial comes in - I have a 2TB backup drive that serves its purpose, but is super slow when trying to access anything on the drive. Converting to the Crucial is like a night and day difference. Now, when I double click on a folder on the Crucial that is filled with tons of media, said folder opens almost immediately. This was not the case with my spinning drives - I would get the spinning wheel on my Mac while the folder struggled to access the data. That alone is worth it for me and has convinced me that I need to replace all my other spinning drives with similar Crucial SSD drives.

Expensive but possibly justified
on August 5, 2023
Posted by: pinkoos
So I'm in the Apple ecosystem and, thus, it's obvious what headphones these would be compared to. And, considering that those unnamed headphones are only 2/3 the cost of the Sony, Sony's pricing should be justified, especially if one is in the Apple ecosystem. For the most part, I think the price is justified, though with some caveats. For example, spatial audio including following the movement of your head seems to only be available for Android users. Not sure if this will eventually come to iPhone users or not. One cool feature that these Sonys have is the speak to chat functionality - once you start talking, the music pauses and ambient mode turns on so you can carry on a conversation. Once you stop speaking, the music (or whatever you're playing) will resume. That is really neat. Another is the dedicated app - you can tweak so many features of the headphones that it may actually be a bit disconcerting to the novice, non-audiophile consumer. But, at least the options (literally) are there if you're a tinkerer.

Loyal Escort user for 40+ years
on July 5, 2023
Posted by: pinkoos
So our family has been using Escort radar detectors from the time they were produced by an old company in Cincinnati. My late father used to have a huge brick of a model back in the 70's and early 80's - basically a thick, rectangular slab of technological marvel. Ever since those times, I've only bought Escort radar detectors. Now that both my sons are driving and sharing my previous car, I let them keep my trusty Passport Solo battery-operated radar detector and I've moved up in the world with this MAXcam 360c. First thing to note is that this is pretty big - not as big as my dad's old radar, but quite a bit larger than my Passport Solo. In a way that heft gives it an air of quality and craftsmanship. But, size doesn't matter, right? What you really want to know is how does this work in terms of giving you a heads up about near vicinity speed traps, etc. Well, in my brief time with it, I think it works wonders. Yes, you do get the occasional false alarm, but nowhere near what I used to get. I've had some issues with the app as others have mentioned (this is on an iPhone, I can't speak to Android) but I'm sure those kinks will get worked out over time, either with firmware updates to the unit or app updates. As far as the dashcam goes...meh. It serves the purpose but the video quality leaves a bit to be desired and the inclusion of a measly 16GB memory card is beyond me for a product at this price point. When a company cuts corners like this it makes me wonder. Anyway, if you're buying this for the radar, I say go for it. If you're buying it for the dashcam and the radar is icing on the cake, I would look elsewhere. So, yes I would recommend this to a friend with the stipulation that said friend is buying it for the radar and not the dashcam.

Nice option for open air / ear hook requirers
on July 5, 2023
Posted by: pinkoos
Although Shokz is known for their bone conduction products, I was pleased to see this true wireless option in the open air / ear hook variety. As someone who has always had issues having earbuds stay in my ears for more than 10 seconds before falling out, it's nice to see more of the market offering these secure options that will stay put. The material used for the ear hooks are soft and I had no issues of discomfort on my daily morning 45 minute elliptical sessions. During these sessions I listen to a combination of music and podcasts and found the sound quality good to very good for these purposes. Granted I'm in an environment where I'm somewhat in control of the external noise, I found that the open air gave just the right mix of sound quality and situational awareness. Since my main use case is these workout sessions, I have yet to stress the battery life as when I'm done exercising, they just go back into their case where they start charging again. I should be able to get more of a sense of battery life when I try them on my next flight. If I had to pick one thing that I'm not happy with I guess it would be the touch controls. Physical buttons would be preferable for these true wireless headphones, but that's a small bone to pick really.

Just okay with several issues
on May 11, 2023
Posted by: pinkoos
I had relatively high hopes for this ring from the get go but it seems I've been let down somewhat. The sizing kit was okay but I feel a bit inaccurate since it uses plastic rather than the material the ring is made out of. While I could remove the sizing ring without soap and water, I cannot do the same with the actual ring - requires soap and water to remove and even then it's still a bit of a struggle to get it over my knuckle. Despite this, the ring still spins around on my finger, making the measurements inaccurate during the time the sensors are not on the palm side of my finger and I don't catch that in time. That brings me to the design - I feel the flat edge of the ring, that is supposed to be on the 'top' side of your finger at all times (which means the sensors are in the proper location), should have been made the palm side of the ring - that way you can just feel with your thumb (or other finger depending on which finger you wear the ring) whether the ring is properly oriented. Instead, I have to constantly look down at the ring to see if it has spun around or not and, if so, then spin it back so that it's positioned properly. In the morning, whenever I open the app, I find syncing problems more often than not - the ring just doesn't communicate with the app very well. I have to go through their troubleshooting steps multiple times to get it to sync. I'm not a fan of the actual app either - the colors are dark and muted and the app is just boring. I would much prefer an app with colors that pop - that would really get me into the mood of focusing on my health and fitness, etc. Instead, this app just makes me want to close it immediately after opening it. I also don't appreciate the 'refer your friend' section on the main screen of the app - it's a distraction. Put that behind a hamburger menu and it would be fine. Last but not least is the subscription - in order to keep all the functionality you get during the first 30 days of ownership you have to subscribe. I think that, based on the cost of ring from the get go, the subscription should be included, at least for a year or so. Otherwise, just bundle the subscription into the initial outlay, so you're paying for the subscription and not the hardware, meaning the hardware is included with your monthly (or a cheaper annual) subscription fee. But to pay the cost of the ring and then on top of that a subscription is not good.

Easy to use, easy to move, easy to adjust
on January 2, 2023
Posted by: pinkoos
This is a super simple concept and is executed so very well. I'm surprised that someone hadn't come up with it earlier. Reading the inventor's story inside the packaging, though, it makes perfect sense for him to have come up with this. It essentially consists of 2 parts and no electronics at all - an actual pleasant surprise! Doesn't require batteries, charging, cords or the like.
Basically, you pick how high up a wall you want to mount it based on what area of your body you want to work on. Then, you just stick it on the wall with the suction cup base. If you've ever used a suction cup-type car phone mount, you will know how to use this within a matter of seconds. Then, it's just a matter of pushing your body part up against the ball and moving around against the ball. You can apply as much or as little pressure as you want, appropriate to the kind of recovery you need. That's essentially it. I've tried several different wall types in our house and the until has stuck on all of them without any problems.

Best iMac EVER
By My135
I had originally bought the 4K model since it was on sale but it just ran slow since it had the regular hard drive. I went home set it up and was eh ok with it. I then saw the 5K with fusion drive on sale for about $600 more... I basically packed the 4K model up and immediately returned it and got this one! This machine is so awesome! It is my first iMac purchase and I don't regret it at all! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE!

Speed difference between 4K hdd and 5K Fusion?
February 26, 2016
Hi,
Just wondering if you'd comment on the speed difference between the 4K you initially bought and the 5K Fusion you replaced it with? The Fusion only has a 24GB SSD tied to the 1TB hard drive, so I'm wondering how the smallish SSD works in terms of speed. Thanks.
