Surprisingly well rounded camera system-but may be

Overall
This is a really good camera system. It offers quality features one would find in professional grade equipment but at the cost of an increased learning curve. This could be uninviting to some. That said, finding certain features could take much trial and error. As a button that might read “light” might need other settings configured to be able to get the light to come on for example. Lastly, my least favorite of things with this system stems from the cookie cutter approach swann took with this unit. The system apparently has much more features than the supplied cameras can use. I assume so that you can use with more powerful cameras swann supplies. This approach seems awfully close to the paywall system that almost everyone has started implementing from brands of consumer electronics, video games, and software developers to name a few. I’d prefer just getting whats advertised without the unnecessary bloatware that serves absolutely no purpose in my system.
Physical camera quality is decent but not the best. They continue to use the same mounting stand/mechanism as some of their previous models. Their pivot method is possibly my lest favorite when compared with all options on the market.
Video quality is nice and I seem to believe I get very good details. However, low light isn’t as great in my environment as it appears to create a lot of noise in the distance, which tends to extend into more lit areas.
The detection settings do a fairly good job at picking out objects and highlighting them as they move in the cameras line of sight. However, there isn’t an option to filter false positives from our pets. Using the sensitivity options didn’t do much to solve the issue. These cameras will also see an animal passing by and label them a “person”.
Overall these cameras did fairly well with the exception of some minor hiccups but to recap
Pros
Advanced Features
Moving object detection
Video quality
Loud Siren
Cons
Steep learning curve
Questionable quality mount
Bloatware loaded
No pet/animal filters

What smart hubs should be-but with extra benefits
on November 10, 2021

This has been surprisingly amazing!
Full disclosure, I’ve never been particularly fond of Ring products. One of my biggest issues with the name are having paywalls for any and every feature offered. With the exception of some very basic free functionality/service. This kit isn’t entirely free of paywalls. The most annoying marketing paywall is a UPS that can be stacked below the hub. The documentation refers to it as the only UPS that can be used with it. The issue with that is that any UPS that can supply it with the needed current and required protection will work. But going with a non-propitiatory UPS may void your warranty.
Setup of this thing is incredibly simple. Grab the app, plug into network and just pull the plastic tabs on the sensors. The sensors come pre-paired with the hub and they came up in the app within seconds. Then just glue or screw into the wall. But heads up, none of the sensors actually come with any hardware, only pre-applied adhesive. Only the keypad has a set of wood screws. There’s also an added extender that only requires plugging into an outlet for large homes. The keypad has a sliding back plate and an intricate routing channel on the back of it for just about any installation.
With it all in place, the system allows for some customizing of tones, to energy saving options. For additional functionality, the hub doubles as a neat WiFi 6 router. The app adds, what I later learned was accessible outside of the system, a social media like neighborhood watch system where nearby users post concerns or notices. In the app, it’s simply referred to as neighbors and encompasses a weekly report generated from county records of the incidents reported to law enforcement.
Using the system in everyday life is incredibly easy. You can either arm from within the app or by entering the pin on the keypad followed by the check mark and one of the states at the top.
This systems great for anyone who’s deeply invested in Ring products and would like for all of their devices to work together or the user who wants a simple self monitored option. There’s also the professionally monitored service which is a valid option with this system.
All in all, this system checks off all of my criteria in a system I would be looking for. Even if I paired my surveillance to something self hosted/serviced.

An improvement over previous models
on November 9, 2021
Posted by: DJSmooth
from Inland Empire, CA
These are great and offer superior comfort. I can wear these for hours without discomfort. I will say that unlike some of their past models, I wasn’t thrilled or excited about taking these out of the packaging. The retail packaging these came in felt rather basic with paperboard layering's inside of the box, good for the environment but not a great presentation. Out of the box, these feel good with a fair weight to the buds in the case. I’m not particularly a fan of the egg-shaped pod cases as those tend to roll around in my pockets. But these come with rounded corners and a flat top and bottom of the case. They feel more sturdy and sit in the same position in my pocket including on my desk as they will not spin countless times if I nudge them a bit. Opening up the case reveals a pair of buds that sit firmly to the base. Flipping over the case while open does not let them fall out. The best part IMO, they have a suede-like feel along the outside of the buds and all across the inside of the case. I’m not entirely sure if this material is what helps them stay in place but this material isn’t coated along the inside of the bud, or the side that would rest along your skin or ear canal. The inside is lined with your standard plastic-like material that every other earbud usually consists of.
Setting them up through the Jabra Sound+ app is almost automatic, if not enabled the app asks to turn on Bluetooth, but other than that there’s really no other user input. After it pairs the app takes you through an optional customization setup. Several of the options include configuring ANC, hear-through, a fit test, and a custom sound profile. ANC was by far the most customization from past models. I typically seem to recall 3 levels of ANC adjustment with other Jabra and competing brand earbuds while these offer sliders. The fit test and sound profiles were an interesting take however. They remind me of a visit to the doctor when they exam your hearing by ringing different tones of beeps and ask you which side was it on.
Music packs a punch with these. Whether you’re listening to rock, rap, jazz, country or classical, these hit all the tones for those genres. Pair them off with 30+ hours of battery life, although to be honest I haven’t been able to confirm the marketing claims but don’t doubt them based on what I’ve seen so far. On top of everything, they’ve got Qi wireless and fast charge to keep your music going.
My 1 and only complaint, after I paired these with a second phone, I couldn’t seem to get them to pair automatically with my first phone. The only way to get them to pair was by manually pressing the button on both buds and search my Bluetooth settings. In any case, these were still great earbuds.

Bright, Vivid, and Beautiful-with a flaw
on November 2, 2021

The Corsair tower headset stand looks amazing with it’s bright and vibrant colors you may have been accustomed to from your other Corsair products. That aesthetically pleasing finish is added into the towers. But just like the spaghetti that Corsair fans bring, these add a series of 3 cables to your desk area. Those are a standard power adaptor, 6 pin fan style headers, and micro USB. The base of the primary unit features a small button, which according to the manual is a mode switching button. However, I’ve never been able to get it to work except during boot, before the iCUE profiles take over. The tower lights themselves have 2 sets of 4 pin fan header style pins and a notch to guide the lamp base when plugging in. The manual states they can be used facing toward or away from the desk but I’ve found that facing them away was the best option. They even made me wonder if I could use the tower lights with a product like Phillips Hue for immersive lighting. It was interesting to find that such integration was already in iCUE, which I had never seen before so was pleasantly surprised to find. After pairing with my Hue bridge I quickly learned of it’s limitations. I tend to believe this to be a Hue limitation and not iCUE.
The biggest annoyance about this product and why it isn’t a 5 star product is because it undergoes a fresh start of sorts every time it comes on. By that I’m referring having to run the setup for the towers at almost every boot. The profile settings are all there according to iCUE, but only 1 of the towers shows up until the wizard it ran. The second issue and another annoyance, the towers are rather finicky when it comes to power. If for whatever reason the towers are powered, plug in the power supply into an outlet for example, the towers will turn on even if the pc is off. This was annoying during testing as the power strip I initially used with these is on a timer which powers on/off phone chargers at times I am typically at the desk. This would cause them to come on at scheduled times and while the pc wasn’t in use. I ended up figuring that running power to them constantly would be the right way to go with them. Well I was wrong there, leaving them on power after the pc was shut down resulted them in turning on under the default mode, or what I’ll just call demo mode as it cycles through various flashing styles. This resulted in returning back to the original setup method with the scheduled power strip. I would have to just remember to turn on the smart switch when I got on the pc.
The last piece which must be mentioned as the product is labeled for such use. The headset holder is rather cheap and lacks the Corsair quality I’ve come to expect. For comparison, I previously purchased a generic screen edge mount from a Chinese web store for about $3 and both are on par in quality These fit my headsets 2” band just fine and holds them securely while keeping them at arms reach.
Overall these are still a nice addition to any desk that wants to add some flashing color as long as you can get past the power mentions.

The aficionados coffee brewer
on October 25, 2021
Posted by: DJSmooth
from Inland Empire, CA
I’m probably on the border of being an aficionado and just an ordinary coffee lover. I’m pretty simple as I’m not particular about the details of my drink, as long as it tastes good. That said I’m not much of a fan about the over-sugared drinks at your local coffee chains and wouldn’t call the coffee from your local gas station my favorite. With all that out of the way, this thing is seemingly designed for the true master. With various pressure options, different grind amounts, and various water ratios that can be set, it’s plenty to mess with to get that perfect cup of coffee to your preferred taste. It’s simple and elegant, with 4 buttons across the face and a knob makes for ease of use. The only downside to this simplicity is that other functions become more complicated. Additionally, the app feels rather redundant and serves little purpose. The only true functions to get from the app are amounts of water, grounds of coffee, and amount of hot water. Nothing else, just a shop portal to buy more smart products offered by GE.
The overall build quality feels rather good with a decent weight to the machine. It does spin a little however when I go to twist the portafilter handle on/off, but it’s reasonable as that area is supposed to seal tight and prevent leaks. It’s countertop friendly and frankly looks really well in the kitchen with beans in the hopper ready to grind away. As a side note, you do not necessarily need to purchase whole coffee beans, you can use pre-ground coffee (what I had to do the first 2 days as all I had left was a cup of beans left). As a bonus, you could also use your pods from your old machine.
Using the milk frother/steamer wand is the icing on the cake and incredibly simple to use. Clean-up is also very simple if you wipe and run hot water right after. Frothing leaves a considerable amount of residue from your drink on the tip of the wand and sets on very quickly. I found that wiping it down as soon as your last drink is ready was best.
Cleaning and maintenance is quick and simple. A couple of keypresses to descale while a twist of a lock and brushing of the grinder. Under the grill, the entire tray slides out allowing you to dump any liquids from its base. Behind that, you’ve got your cleaning brush and pick to use in the grinder. I was really impressed with the red floater under the tray. It raises through the grill as a visual alert that the tray is full.
But like I said at the beginning, I was pretty simple with this machine. The defaults worked just fine for me, my only real adjustments came to the hoppers grind level. That alone made some great coffee.

Sweet picture frame in an elegant design
on October 17, 2021
Posted by: DJSmooth
from Inland Empire, CA
These seem to have been timed perfectly, especially considering everyone’s free photo storage from a popular provider has recently been removed. Or at least that’s what I first believed. Aura’s unlimited storage works a little differently than how I believed it would. It operates like a one-way street, or is designed so that you can give it your memories but not retrieve them. You still retain full control over them and have the ability to delete them whenever you’d like. You just have no means of pulling any back out from it in case your original was destroy. I can live with it however, it’s most likely designed this way to prevent abuse.
The frame itself has an interesting and unique feel to it. Almost like a clay molding where the surface of the frame is mildly rough, like 400 grit sandpaper. Along the edge of the frame there’s a series of groves that add to it’s uniqueness.
The frame, through the app, also conveniently allows sharing of an album with another user. Either a local user or a distant relative. Anytime photos added to that album, whether from your account or your user, will end up flowing into your picture frame.
However, one of the most concerning things surrounding the Aura Frames was where or who handled my photos. I couldn’t find details about that in the product description. After connecting it to my WiFi I was able to browse the services it communicated with. The main 3 that I could pick out was Google (presumably for Google Photos/ Assistant integration), a New York NTP server (where your gadgets grab the date and time), and AWS. AWS was coming up 8 out of 10 times which meant this is where your photos are stored.

It’s a budget surveillance system that works great
on October 5, 2021
Posted by: DJSmooth
from Inland Empire, CA
When I first heard of Night Owl I thought “this will be a bare-bones system similar to any generic security system”. I had never come across this brand in any previous search to find a surveillance system for my personal use. So saying I went into this system blindly is completely accurate.
The cameras themselves feel cheap. They are light and made of plastic. The base is just a generic platter with a few holes in it. It screws to adjust and a locking nut follows behind it to lock it into position. Slightly above this platter rests a plastic knob that allows for vertical movement. It's fairly flimsy, that I thought I may break it by adjusting it after locking it in place. Luckily none of my adjustments actually broke it, just a sense that it can with enough pressure applied from the hand. Moving to the lens of the camera, the material encasing the front of the camera appears to be entirely plastic with a oval-shaped cut out for the camera lens. There’s a small opening above the lens for the onboard speaker. Below the lens seats its LED lights. At the center, a (roughly 100 lumen) white LED and within that same lens what appears to be 2 IR LED’s. It’s a basic and compact camera. The description reads 30ft IR visibility. But I would consider 20-25ft to be more reasonable as at about 30ft I could only see shadows. Was it a dog, a cat, possum, or a bag of trash blowing in the wind? You may never know!
In all seriousness, it might come down to your ambient environment. In mine, with several other light sources around (from my house, neighbors, street, etc) 30ft was a long shot. Despite its shortcomings in material, it performed quite well for a typical suburban front yard (roughly 35’x40’ lawn 25’x20’ driveway area). Included with the cameras are mounting screws and 8 rolls of 60ft BNC cable.
The resolution on these is fairly good, mostly in the day tho. As mentioned before, nighttime isn’t so great, you won't catch any faces or license plates at night (few will be this good). I blame most of this on the few IR LED's. What you will see are figures, silhouettes, and vague human characteristics unless someone approaches the camera close up.
The DVR unit feels a little better to the touch. Setup was literally 1 click, I didn’t have to do anything but download the app. Most systems typically make you go through a ton of hoops just to start using your recorder. Based on the design and the screw holes on the bottom it only seats a single HDD. I did have to go ask in the Night Owl Q&A for this next bit. I searched both the product description on Best Buy, Night Owl, and the FAQ pages that Night Owl sent after setup. I also checked both manual/materials included with the security unit and the online manual. But no matter what, I could not find a definitive answer to the largest HDD upgrade the DVR would see. According to Night Owl support, it will take a maximum of 8tb 7200rpm HDD. The system offers several recording options from motion to object and narrows down those options to person, face, and vehicle detection. In my setup, I couldn’t get vehicle detection working right as it always triggered it as object detection and not vehicle. Additionally, it offers a notification system on the cameras that will either strobe, turn on the light, announce “smile, you are on camera”, inform you are unavailable, or activities its siren. Configuring everything from the iOS app is mostly straight forward but (at the time of writing the app is rated 1.7 in the app store) there are several areas that could be more intuitive or work better. My biggest issues- settings not present, hidden settings, and a cumbersome view process. The view process creates a clickable window for picking the DVR then windows for each of the cameras set up. But if you only have 1 DVR having an extra press before viewing your cameras feels redundant. This however, is not being factored into my review since apps carry another system.
What really stood out, because I’ve never seen it in any other cheap system before. Night Owl offers wireless camera pairing with the 8ch DVR. That gives the system a grand total possible of 12 camera feeds. These would probably work well in locations where running a wire is either difficult or nearly impossible.
So to summarize
PROS
Good Resolution
DVR Features
DVR Build Quality
Upgrade-ability
Wireless Compatibility
Reasonably Priced
CONS
Cheap Cameras
Weak IR
Non-intuitive iOS App (Not rated)

Easy to use, quality countertop oven/air fryer
on October 1, 2021

Nice oven and seems well built. I’ve been using with almost anything I’m planning to cook. Heats up quickly and doesn’t heat up the entire house. That in it of itself is probably the biggest factor for me as a SoCal resident. The days are pretty hot. The last thing I need is another heat source inside the house.
Semi compact oven, a little on the tall side. But reasonable considering the available space. Measures roughly 15.75”L x 13.25”W x 14.5”H exterior & about 13”L x 12.5”W x 8”H interior. Just slightly taller than my tallest kitchen appliance but easily fits a typical frozen pizza. The presets have worked for mostly anything I’ve used in it, but if adjustments need to be made a simple hold of the button is all it takes. It counts up/down beginning with 1 minute counts until it reaches its first whole number divisible by 10 (ex 10, 20, 30, etc.). Once there it counts in increments of 5 until it reaches the end of the timer.
Included materials felt a bit lacking. I’ve normally come to find a manual with detailed diagrams, instructions on the features and their uses, along with 2 or more recipes that cover each specific feature. The Oster digital air fryer only included 2 recipes. To be fair, it details each and every feature in a section prior.
I only have 2 issues with it.
1)The power cable with this is rather thin and only 2 prong? I’m no graduate in circuitry design but this feels a little off. My Microwave, which uses less juice has a 3 prong. Both are made of aluminum so my only other assumption I can form is that this oven offers better insulation inside? When I measure the difference in wattage between these devices I get 1500w from the wall with the oven set to air fry. Under bake, that drops down to 1250w. The same microwave reads 1200w.
2) The second is the same as mentioned above. The instructions could have been better documented. As they arrive, they feel half baked. They do squeeze them in English, Spanish and French so I suspect this is the primary reason behind this.

Beautiful (and powerful) Gaming Laptop
on September 29, 2021
Posted by: DJSmooth
from Inland Empire, CA
Overall
This went from wow! about the exterior of the laptop (finish, texture, details, build, etc) to WOW! inside. It’s an overall, beautiful system that’s fully compatible with Windows 11, if you care about that. It runs everything you can think of throwing at it. Most games should run at 1080p, however some big AAA hits with demanding graphics may need some graphics settings adjustments. With that said, this is not a next gen game console killer. This is more close in line with their predecessor, non 4K upgrade console (XB1/PS4). Running some AAA titles with ultra or high settings generates lots of heat. Enough so that the speaker grill above the keyboard can get hot enough to burn your hand if you rest it here. During these more demanding scenarios, there is a significant whine coming from the fans. At peak I measured 84dB. Under normal load however, that produces about 42dB. In none of my gaming sessions did it throttle.
On the other hand, MSI likes to pack a lot of stuff in the laptop. Some of which I much rather they didn’t. Bloatware such as Norton, which can be uninstalled I suppose, their own music player and others.
Hardware is premium! The 240hz display brings a fluid motion across everything you throw at it. Top it off with a bright and vivid picture from the LED display. You’re left with an excellent picture quality. The included storage drive is pretty speedy (not the fastest but still good). I measured about 3,000 MB/s Read 1,800 MB/s Write. 16gb of speedy ram is perfect for gaming. The keyboard has a nice feel and look with a bright LED backlight. But Mystic Lights lacks a bit of customization for them. The keys have a nice feel upon press but I feel they’re a bit large. Some of the multi function keys feel misplaced as well including the Function key. The worst part of the hardware pieces used to assemble this unit, the Camera. In terms of specs, it’s on par with everything else on the market. But this camera is not compatible with Windows Hello. A pretty big issue for the engineers to overlook when designing this laptop.
Bottom Line- This is a great gaming laptop for both gaming or productivity uses. But be prepared to deal with some bloatware, deal with issues surrounding muscle memory on the keyboard, and the lack of Windows Hello unless you pair other devices with this.

WOW!! The best budget True Wireless earbuds

These things rock for being priced so cheaply. They offer a wide range of audio tones and work for any media I’ve thrown at them. To add to that, battery life is incredible! According to JLAB, each bud offers 8+ hours of playtime and the case adds another 24+ hours of battery. For me, they’ve worked since receiving on the same initial charge. If I’d have to guess, I’d say roughly 12+ hours of use. The integrated USB charging cable is another plus. No more of a need to carry, and risk losing, a charging cable with you on the go.
The other major plus is the fact that the earbuds are IPX4 water-resistant. I don’t know about you but if the option is to buy these or a cheap set of buds at a gas station, I’d 100% go for these. There’s a good value from these cheap buds that other common variety cheap buds can’t seem to match.
But be aware, with cheap buds comes less features, which aren’t a deal breaker if you’re like me. Some of those are no ANC, hear-through, and sound isolation to name a few.
Key Gripe- Although I mentioned it worked with all media types I’ve thrown at them. Depending on the connecting device, I’ve witnessed some latency issues. Pairing with my iPhone XR shows no notable signs of delay. Not with video, music, or games. However, pairing with my desktop which houses a MSI MPG B550 GAMING CARBON WIFI results is several milliseconds of delay. It’s most noticeable with video, not so much with music/games. Delays are not present with any other Bluetooth devices such as an Xbox gamepad, Turtle Beach Headsets, or Beats Buds to name a few. Seems to work just fine with my Surface Pro, however.
The other preference-based issue is the gel insert. They feel like a simple piece of plastic and don’t feel so great in my ears. They did come with a free pre-release foam insert that will ship at a later time, which I hope will give these a better feel.
Bottom Line- These are pretty good cheap buds that you want to use as the product you won't be bothered if you lose on your travels. These will most likely not be the buds you use to zone out and tune out the world while listening to your music.

Play PC games with your Xbox Wireless Controller.

With will allow me to play Elder Scrolls Online with an Xbox One control on a pc that I built, and a wireless headset and microphone for my Spanish class?

I can only clearly answer your first question. That is a yes to playing Elder Scrolls Online with this headset. But in order for you to be able to pair it with your computer you will need an Xbox wireless adaptor that you will pair the headset to.
However, I’m not entirely sure if you’d be able to use it for a class once paired to the Xbox adaptor.

It should be. According to the manufacturer, it's compatible with Windows and Mac along with iOS and Android. As long as your HP laptop falls in one of those operating systems you should be OK.

Whats up with the lack of reviews on this, is this a new product? Are the ear cups leather? Is the mic attached or apart of the headset?

Product released a little over a month ago, so it is still fairly new. I believe the lack of reviews is due to people being hesitant by its overall lack of reviews internet wide, not just best buy.
The mic is detachable, picture attached.
The cups are both a synthetic fabric and a faux like leather. The leather covers the outside and synthetic fabric covers the face (or the side that would press against the side of your head).

Easily hang your existing soundbar beneath your wall-mounted flat-panel TV with this Rocketfish™ RF-SBM101 mount that accommodates most soundbars weighing up to 15 lbs. for sturdy support. Steel material provides a durable design.

Can you mount a sound bar ABOVE a tv with this?

You can, just as long as you stick to the weight limits. I believe it really comes down to the soundbar and actual mounting slots on the back of the TV.
