best for a secondary sink
on September 17, 2020
Posted by: bradcon

First of all, the filter really works. The tap water in my area is not great. There is a smell and a taste that this filter almost completely removes. So two thumbs up there. The other thing is that installation was unexpectedly easy. Total time was maybe 20 minutes, and I was really taking my time. Most of the fittings are those new press-fit, and there are adapters to tie into your existing threaded connectors. The filter is very easy to get in and out of the holder, so there's no problem with putting this all the way in the back of your cabinets, and the lines are plenty long enough to give you flexibility in where you want to mount it. The only drawback here is that this is in-line with your normal faucet. It's not a separate line for dispensing water. That means you don't have to make any new holes in your sink or take over an existing one, but that also means that all the cold water you run through your sink is also going through the filter. If you just want to use this for drinking water or cooking water, then you're also going to waste a lot of filter capacity by using it for washing dishes or your hands or anything else you use that tap for. I put this in my wet bar, so it's almost exclusively used for water that's going to be consumed. If you're going to put this under your kitchen sink, that's something to consider.

feels like it ought to be doing something

I'd been using a percussion massage gun to try to aid recovery after workouts. It was better than a roller, but I'd still get severe cramps sometimes in my calves. I was hoping this might be a better solution. On the lower settings, it doesn't feel like it's doing much, but you can really dial up the pressure to put a good squeeze on your legs and feet. I could tell my muscles were less tense afterwards, but I can't really tell that the results are any better or worse than what I was getting with a percussion gun. The other potential issue with these is the single size. I'm 6' tall with a 10 1/2 shoe, and these just barely fit. If your feet are any bigger than that, you will probably have trouble getting your foot in and out of the boot. And if you're any taller than that, the thigh section may not clear your knee. As it is, they ride really low on my thighs, and I'm pulling them up as far as I possibly can. I think they work, in their way, but maybe not as much as I was hoping they would.

The most usable Keurig yet
on September 13, 2020
Posted by: bradcon
from Hays, KS
I've been using Keurig machines for a long time, through many product cycles and feature improvements. This seems like a big step forward, even if it is the result of fairly minor tweaks here and there. First, the size is more manageable. I have fairly low cupboards, but this one fits underneath them. You still need to leave the front sticking out to put the pods in, but it saves space. The water reservoir is significantly better. Who would have thought just putting a nice, ergonomic handle on the front would have made such a big difference? The contoured reservoirs may look nicer, but this is so much easier to use everyday. Maybe the best feature is the ability to save profiles. No more adjusting the temp and size between multiple users. You can save up to three preferences, then it's a single button to make your (and two of your friends') favorite cup. Or maybe you switch between a travel mug during the week, and a regular cup on the weekends. Two presets can make that even easier. Finally, a nice, easy-to-read digital display simplifies things with clear feedback on your selections. Definitely the best Keurig for the money right now.

It could suck harder
on July 31, 2020

While it may not be the handheld vac with the hardest suction, it has other features that make up for it. For one, it has an interchangeable battery. That means when the battery capacity starts failing (and it eventually will with any battery), you don't have to buy a whole new vacuum, just a new battery. Two, that battery is interchangeable with other products in the ONEPWR line. For example, I also have the sweeper, so if I'm using one tool for so long that the battery runs down, I can just grab the battery from the other one and keep going. Third, it is pretty sleek. It's not bulky itself, and the attachments are well designed for storage and use. It's easy to get the battery on and off, and it's easy to get the dirt receptacle on and off for emptying. There's not a ton of capacity, so you might need to empty it more often, but it's easy to do. Finally, while I did say it could suck harder, it does suck sufficiently. It's not going to stun you with its power, but it's perfectly adequate for most jobs.

I didn't really anticipate how handy it would be to have a cordless chopper. Though limited in capacity, this has plenty of power--enough to dice raw carrots. With the dual speed settings, you can also chop softer ingredients without pureeing them. Battery life is good, and recharging is quick. Two different inserts allow for both mixing and chopping.

Not a typical convertible
on July 8, 2020
Posted by: bradcon
from Hays, KS
I was primarily interested in getting the Surface Book version of the Surface because I wanted to save the desk real estate behind the computer by having the "keyboard" hold up the screen rather than having it rest on a kickstand. I also wanted the Surface version of the convertible laptop form factor, because folding a keyboard under your tablet is never a great way to use a tablet. You really need to be able to remove the keyboard to use a computer as a tablet. The Surface Book provides those advantages, but it also diverges from the typical convertible experience in some other ways. For one, the keyboard is much more of an appendage here than an integral part of the computer like it is in a typical laptop. There are no speakers or vents (they're behind the screen). The backlit keyboard and touchpad are good, but there's a lot of unused real estate on that half of the computer. Part of that can be attributed to the height of the screen. The aspect ratio makes the screen a lot taller than the typical 15" laptop, and that form factor also makes it more suitable for use as a tablet. A nice side benefit of that aspect ratio is that you have a lot more vertical room when using graphics programs, which it also handles very capably. While you get used to having to do a lot more vertical scrolling when using graphics programs on a laptop, the extra headroom on the Surface screen is immediately appreciable. While most convertible laptops seemed to be designed to be used only rarely as a tablet, and seem to be optimized for use as a laptop, the Surface Book seems designed for use as a tablet first, but with really strong capabilities as a computing platform. This makes itself most evident when using graphics programs in the tablet form factor. But even when taxing the processor heavily in a typical laptop setup with a second screen attached, it shows its power computing capabilities. One other thing to note is how well it handles undocking from the keyboard, even when a second monitor is attached. I don't know that I've ever seen a laptop handle undocking from external monitors without having to close every program first, but the Surface Book preserved all the windows without a hitch. It also deals with the rotating the screen much better, although there is a slight lag when doing that. I was pleasantly surprised by how well this form factor works. Although I can write about it all day, you can't really appreciate it until you start using it, especially when you're used to the constraints of typical laptops. I think a lot of those advantages and improvements come from the tablet-first design choices, but it still works so well as a production laptop. My one complaint is the proprietary power connection. Why can't Microsoft just use USB C like every other manufacturer in the world? If you're looking for a computer that you can also actually use as a tablet, rather than just a laptop with a touchscreen, this is the way to go.

maybe works?

Since I don't have any lab equipment to verify whether bacteria are eliminated by the blue light in the cap, I can't tell you with any level of surety that this product works as advertised. I can tell you the led light on the top of cap will indicate that it's working, and I can tell you that the blue light inside the cap comes on. I can't tell you how much UV radiation is reaching the water in the bottom of the bottle or whether it's effective. I can tell you that neither setting (regular or "crazy" clean) is going to change the flavor of your tap water. It may (or may not) be purified, but it's going to taste the same.

Good, but maybe ready for an update already
on April 27, 2020

There are a lot of advantages to the Android TV OS, but some of the features need a little more polish. Right out of the box, setup was easy because I could use my existing Google account. I didn't even need to setup voice recognition - which caused its own problems. Trying to search using voice within apps was not working until I tried using the Google Assistant, at which point I was prompted to pair the remote using Bluetooth for voice commands to work. Had I not short-circuited that step by porting over my settings, I might have avoided the initial search issues. Along with the Google account transfer came some, but not all, of my passwords. I wouldn't necessarily expect everything to come over because some of that depends on the app developer, but I would have expected YouTube TV to already have my account info, which it did not. Some apps seemed ready to go out of the box, and others seem to need more development. For example, Vudu is not showing the lists feature, which is relatively new, but very useful if you have a large library. Other apps seemed to have issues with specific content. For example, Google Play could not stream one of the movies in my library but worked fine with other content. Oddly enough, the Starz app, which gives me all kinds of headaches on other platforms, has been working flawlessly on this TV. Being an Android TV, there is also support for games, but sadly, not enough storage to accommodate them. I had to uninstall the one game I put on there because otherwise, there wasn't enough room for all my streaming apps. I also was sad to see that Stadia is not supported yet. Even though there is Chromecast "built-in," I still have to plug a Chromecast dongle into one the HDMI ports to use Stadia. Operating system aside, the picture is quite good. It appeared a little washed out until I adjusted the settings, but there are plenty of preset options to choose from. Most of the shortcomings that exist can be corrected with app and OS updates, but even out of the box, Android TV has advantages over most of the other platforms.

sweeper not a blower
on December 18, 2019
Posted by: bradcon

Good for what it's billed as, but don't expect to be blowing leaves out of your yard with this. It's more appropriate for blowing leaves out of your garage or off your porch. It's light and cordless, which makes it good for getting around obstacles in the garage, or around furniture on the patio. But the tradeoff for those advantages is less power. There's also not a huge amount of capacity in the battery. I didn't run it all the way down to see how long it would last, but 10 minutes of blowing out my garage had it down to half when I put the battery back on the charger. The suction end is also designed well so it will stand on end when not in use - a nice space-saving feature. Again, a really good sweeper, but don't overestimate what you're getting here.

fun, if you've got the right space
on December 6, 2019
Posted by: bradcon

The kids really enjoy playing with this, but you need to have the right area to use it in. You have to have enough space where you can swing it around without hitting anything, and you also need to be able to prop your phone up where you can see the app while you're swinging the saber around. The position sensors in the saber are pretty good, and the app can tell how close you are to making the prescribed moves with it. The lights and sounds add a lot to the experience, but it's more difficult than it should be to turn off the saber and to exit the game. However, both of those things could be addressed with future updates to the app.

Does the Sony 1000XM3 InEar have it's own volume control? I need to amplify my listening, while my wife listens to the normal TV volume. I have a pair of the Sony 1000XM# over the Ear Head Phones and of course they DO have volume control. Thanks.

No, the on-ear controls only control playback; you have to control the volume on the device you're connected to.

Add stability to your home network with the Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender. With DirectLink technology, it avoids signal loss by adding another 5GHz Wi-Fi channel to the standard setup, which it then uses strictly for receiving signal from the source. This Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender covers an area of up to 12,000 sq. ft. and includes four Gigabit network ports.

Can it use the same SSID as my TWC modem?

It will "clone" your SSID by adding a suffix to it, but it won't let you use the identical SSID. If you want to extend a network that way, you need to go with a mesh network.
