Comfortable and they stay in place, but...

I had high hopes for the Jaybird Tarah bluetooth headphones. I was an early adopter to Jaybird’s entry into the bluetooth earbud market years ago with the X2 and was very impressed with the quality of sound and battery life. Which is why I feel so confused by these headphones - the sound quality is terrible. I thought perhaps it was because when I first started using the Tarah’s that I hadn’t set up the App yet which provides a sound equalizer. The equalizer has a bunch of presets built-in, and an overwhelming array of presets you can download. Or you can tweak the frequency range to exactly the way you like it. This did help, but not solve the overall sound quality. I’m a bit of an audio snob, I’ll admit it. I appreciate good sound quality, good earphones should be able to reproduce the original soundtrap without coloring it. I found these to be extremely ‘bright’ sounding earphones, with very poor bass reproduction. Try as I might, tweaking the equalizer, reposition the earbuds in my ear canals - but I never got the Tarah’s to sound good to me.
On the positive side the Tarah’s fit really well, and are very secure once in place. They stayed in position for each and every one of my runs, they were comfortable and allowed enough outside sound in to be safe and alert. They were also well planted and secure during crossfit, and gym routines. I will state these stayed in my ears better than any other earbuds I’ve used in the past, I just wish they sounded better.
I’ve never had any trouble with sweat killing my earphones, but I know that other people have. The Tarah’s are IPX7 Certified, meaning they are made to take a certain amount of moisture without any ill effects. But they can’t be used for swimming, or in the shower (not sure why you would use them there - but that’s the disclaimer). But you can run with these in the rain and not worry about ruining them. The remote provides the basic functions, and also includes the ability to activate the Google assistant. This may be useful for some folks, but I didn’t use it. The mic function was something I haven’t ever used, but the feature is there if you decide to make or take a call while wearing these.
The charger design is pretty neat, and convenient. It’s proprietary though, so don’t lose or break it! The battery life was acceptable, if not impressive. I generally got 5 hours out of them before they needed to be recharged. In summary I liked everything about the Tarah’s, they were easy to set up, they paired quickly, they were comfortable to wear, they stayed in place. But… They audio reproductive was just unimpressive, and I’m afraid I can’t settle for such uninspiring sound. I really want to like these, and I wish the sound quality was a user error. But I’ve tried everything and they just don’t appeal to me. Ironically I still have my old X2’s, they still work, and they sound far better than this brand new model. Sorry Jaybird, I didn’t like the Tarah’s but I still love your products.

Familiar interface, easy to install- priced right!
on November 10, 2018
Posted by: EagleCroft
from Exeter, NH
Microsoft made it very easy for me to install the full Microsoft Office Suite on my new home computer. Plus it comes with a bunch of other features that are icing on the cake. Office 365 Personal is simple to buy and download. Gone are the days when I’d have to drive to the store, find the software I wanted somewhere in the giant superstore, deal with the checkout line and driving back home to install the software from CD’s. The ability to download and install right from my home is so convenient! I did have a little bit of a hiccup while installing, which wasn’t a big deal but it did add a few more steps to the installation process. I downloaded the Office 365 installer, and launched it. Immediately the installer halted and alerted me that I had an outdated version of Office on my machine. That was true! I’d had an old version of Office on CD that I had installed, but decided it was so old that it wasn’t worth using. So before installing the 365 version I needed to uninstall the old version. After doing that I returned to the installation, and this time it went smoothly and effortlessly. Before long I was up and running, the first application I ran was Microsoft Word. All the .doc files on my storage drive were now completely readable and editable. Same for all my .xls files, my spreadsheets came up perfectly and were formatted correctly. There are a few free applications available online that provide many of the same type of applications that Office by Microsoft provides. But none are as refined, or as feature rich as Office. For a small amount of money, it is totally worth it to own (or lease) Office 365.
I set up Outlook as my email reader to use instead of my service provider’s version. It is so much better! It is certainly partially because I’ve used Outlook for years at work, so I know it very well. Having all my personal email at home using the Outlook interface is just a great and intuitive solution.
Powerpoint is something I’d normally only use at work, but I’m finding more and more uses for it at home. Particularly with the Office 365 version, which has all types of new features and upgrades. I have been astounded by how good PowerPoint has become in creating graphic materials. It’s very powerful, and I love using it.
There are many other features and bonuses that Office 365 can boast of. I was looking for the familiar interface that I know so well after many years of using it at work. I didn’t want to relearn some new application. Microsoft made it simple of me to get up and running quickly, and I think the price is right. But be aware this is an annual subscription. So you will get charged a renewal fee year after year. I’m still saying it’s a steal because Microsoft will continue to push updates to the suite to keep it up to date and feature rich. Along with the applications I’ll use the most of (Word, Excel and Outlook), you also get PowerPoint, OneNote, and even 1TB of storage online. I run this on my PC running Windows 10. But you can also install this on an Apple Mac, or a system running and iOS or Android OS. There’s so much technology here!
If you need office-type applications at home do yourself a favor and skip the free office suites. Yes, those do the basic job just fine. But none are as refined as Office 365, none are more tightly integrated and none are more widely accepted as the premier way to create productivity documents. Good job Microsoft! Great product! Priced Right!

Winner winner! Like a desktop, only thinner!
on November 4, 2018

from Exeter, NH
I am a 30 year veteran of the computer industry, I worked on computers back when screens showed only one color (green or amber). Or they didn’t have a screen at all, and instead printed everything on a teletype widebody dot matrix printer. I worked for a couple of companies that designed the first thin and light computers. Of course back than that designation was completely different than what we have today. The technology advancements are nothing short of incredible, if only our transportation system and energy sector advanced at the same rate! I could spend time making comparisons for the technology in the Acer CP315 and compare it to the laptop computers I worked on 20 years ago. But that would be laughable and pointless. Instead I’ll tell you my impressions of this computer, what I think it’s good for and whether I recommend it.
Hardware
Very impressive build quality! I would not have expected this level of fit and finish at this price point. It’s really incredible that Acer can manufacture a system this solidly built, with quality components and keep the price point so low! A true testament to engineers, and their constant pursuit of building high quality products efficiently and cost-effectively. The body and chassis are stiff and feel well put together. It feels like a single unit, which is impressive. I really like the texture materials, and the high-end look and feel. Outstanding!
The screen quality is quite good. The resolution is excellent, and the backlit screen is very evenly lit and accurate. Edge to edge the light emission appears quite evenly distributed. Fonts look crisp and not-blurry at all even at the highest supported resolution. Very, very nice! Off angle viewing is also surprisingly good! Far better than I expected it to be. That’s good and bad depending on what you will use this for, if you don’t want people next to you seeing what you are typing - well, this screen won’t help you any because it displays well even at extreme angles. Having said that there is a fair amount of glare on the screen, which I attribute to the touch screen capabilities. What’s that you say? Touchscreen? Yep! Not only is the panel crisp and clear but also doubles as a touchscreen display. More on that shortly… Color reproduction is also very good, and very minimal artifacting even while watching fast moving videos.
The keyboard is shockingly good! The debounce is good, the travel length of the keys just right! Really good, and not at all like the terrible ‘chiclet’ style keys of the past. I can type on this keyboard and not get frustrated. It doesn’t have much feedback in terms of sound, but that’s not unusual. I like the old-fashioned clickity click mechanical keyboards - I’m kind of spoiled that way. My first PC was an IBM XT with an 8088 process and a keyboard that weighed more than the entire Acer CP315 with adapter! Ha! As far as laptop keyboards go, this one is excellent. And for bonus points it’s backlit! Good job ACER!
Built-in storage is a mere 32GB… I say that jokingly because my first notebook computer had a 100mb hard drive! It was puny and slow, by today’s standards. But back then it was state of the art. What can I say, I guess I’m old… The 32GB of flash memory in the CP315 is all you need, honestly. If you feel you need more, go ahead and add it. Acer was kind enough to provide a MicroSD card slot and USB 3.0 ports. Knock yourself out if you really want to pile in more memory. But it’s not worth it in my estimation. This is a networked Internet device, that uses as part of its architecture Google’s online services and storage. The whole idea of this system is to separate out the processing part from the storage part. Storage is online, is plentiful and can be accessed anywhere in the world so long as you can access the Internet. Well maybe not in China and North Korea where it would likely be blocked. Add Iran to that too.. Hah! You can save your work locally, for those times that you won’t have access to the Internet (on an airplane for instance). But memory is cheap, if you are running low - go buy some more…
The battery life in this machine is awfully impressive! It’s rated at 14 hours, and while I haven’t reproduced that - it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s a real number. I’ve used the CP315 for 8 hour straight on battery only and it still had battery life left. YRMV. There aren’t any moving parts in this system, Acer did a great job optimizing energy consumption. This is the laptop I’ll bring with me on extended trips. The power adapter is also lightweight, small and features a long cable. Nice!~
The touchpad is… Ummm… A touchpad. I was never a big fan, and I’m still not. I liked the old trackballs of the old laptops. They just don’t exist anymore. You have to buy external ones and plug them in. The touchpad on this computer is ginormous! There is plenty of surface area to get very detailed movements on. I should like it, but I just don’t care for any touchpads. The other thing I don’t like about this particular touchpad is that there are no buttons. Zero. Not two, now one. Instead the button(s) are under the touchpad so you have to train yourself to click and double click in place on the touchpad. If you’ve used Apple notebooks, this will make perfect sense to you. But I’m an old fashioned mouse guy, and I haven’t got comfortable with it yet. Having said that the touchpad combines a number of capabilities and functions all in one. One finger press, one finger drag, two finger press, two finger drag… Ugh… Read the manual is all I can say…
The CP315 is the contortionist amongst other normal laptops. It has an ingenious hinge design that not only holds the screen stable at most every angle I tried, it also allows the user to flip the screen completely backwards. The end result is that the laptop transforms into a tablet computer. I personally don’t have much use for that, but I’m sure lots of people do. The feature is there if you want it. When you convert it to a tablet the keyboard and touchpad are disabled so you don’t accidently type things on the screen. In tablet mode you will use the touchscreen to navigate and type - it’s like a big smartphone in this mode. I recommend getting a stylus to use if this mode is important to you. It is really cool, and a nice added bonus for those people that will appreciate it.
The speakers sound very and are very loud for the size and depth of this laptop. No complaints at all! Of course most people have Bluetooth speakers, and headphones. I tried both and they both connected quickly and worked flawlessly. I tried the built-in webcam and microphone only long enough to verify they work. They work… I haven’t used them in practice, but I’m sure given everything else with this machine they’ll work equally well.
So that’s a review of the hardware, of the major functions. Oh the wifi works great! No problems at all, fast solid connection. Never lost connection, very stable. No ethernet connection of course, this notebook is too thin. If for some reason you must be hard wired, you can use a USB style connector. I won’t review the software on this computer because Acer didn’t design it, they integrated it. This runs the Chrome OS, and uses Apps instead of full fledged software applications. This operates a lot like Microsoft Windows, but it’s not. It takes a little getting use to. But if you have an Android phone, you probably already know how to use this.
So who is this computer meant for? In my opinion it’s perfect for the user who wants to browse the Internet, to watch videos online, to correspond via email and to use the wide assortment of Google Chrome Apps. You get access to Google’s excellent office productivity apps. I wouldn’t use this to write a thesis or my memoirs, but in a pinch it can double as a work computer.
But this is not a gaming computer, nor is it meant to be. It has enough power to do what I mentioned but not anything requiring lots of processing power. If you are a power user and want to play video games or edit large videos - this isn’t for you. But if you are looking for a stable and well-built laptop that will keep going on battery power all day long - this is a winner - and you better believe I recommend it. It’s a bargain!

Great looking Digital watch - that makes me smart!
on October 27, 2018

from Exeter, NH
Nice watch! I’ve heard that many times during my first few weeks with the MK Runway smartwatch. This particular smartwatch is a departure from I’d come across because it is a beautiful merger of classic watch aesthetics with digital technology. From side angles you might mistake this digital watch for an analog one. Early smartwatches were a lot like early hybrid cars. They were overdone, and made to look too out of the ordinary. Now hybrid cars are looking more mainstream, and so are smartwatches. I am a watch freak, with a collection of over 25 watches. I am a fan of design, engineering and technology. The Runway has found a home in my watch collection sitting next to a full mechanical watch that runs off of gears not electrons.
The MK Runway uses the Wear OS by Google, which keeps getting better with every update. There are so many features available to the wearer that it’ll keep you busy during many lunch breaks figuring it out and setting it up. MK makes it a lot easier to do this by providing video tutorials that walk you through configuration. Very helpful! For me I mostly use the smart features for getting messages, being notified when I get a call. Letting me know when I have an appointment. As I’ve gotten older it’s nice to have a device to remind me of things I might have otherwise forgotten. Speaking of getting old… My eyesight gets crappier every passing year. Reading glasses (i.e. cheaters), are a part of my life now. A benefit of the Runway watch is it’s large very bright and very accurate AMOLED display. I can almost see it without my glasses on! LOL! The Google OS software allows me also to make the fonts larger, and if that doesn’t help the Google Assistant can be set up to tell me the time audibly just by saying “Hello Google - please tell me the time”. I find the Assistant to be as good as Amazon’s Echo technology, and better than Apple’s SIRI.
I should mention that I’m an Apple iPhone user, and pairing to the MK Runway was effortless. Early smartwatches didn’t do well if you left their ecosystem (iOS vs. Android). Thankfully that is not a problem any more. I own the first version of the Apple iWatch, and still use it. This is just a much better watch, one that doesn’t look futuristic but has more features than I’ll ever need. A major complaint I have with my iWatch and most smartwatches, is that they don’t stay lit. Smartwatches conserve energy and extend battery life by turning off the display until needed. The problem with that is you need to flip your wrist to wake the display up. This has always been a complaint of mine as often I want to discreetly look at my wrist to see what time it is. Many times in meetings I will look down to my watch to see how much time is left before I need to wrap up. If the screen is blank I’ll have to noticeably turn my wrist. If I do that and the person I’m meeting with notices they feel like I have someplace better I need to go. I hate that! There is a new feature on the Runway that solves this problem. There is an option to keep the display lit in a low-power mode all the time! This is great! I’ve been waiting for this feature, and it now removes my hesitation for wearing a smartwatch daily. Yes, this feature does cut down on battery life. However I’ve had good results even in this mode. I’ve kept the watch display on all day at work and still had battery life left at the end of the day. I recharge it and start again.
The Runway has all sorts of health related features in it, to monitor your heart beat, the number of steps you take every day. It integrates online with multiple different fitness websites. But to be honest I didn’t get this watch for fitness reasons. This is a fashionable watch. It’s rose gold exterior is shiny and good looking. I don’t wish to use this watch when I’m working out. I have another dedicated watch to do that. But I suppose it’s nice to know it can do both. Indeed this watch is waterproof, so you could swim with it. It’s also got a built in GPS, so it would be great to use in many fitness programs. But I use this watch for business purposes, it keeps me on time and organized.
There are so many things to like about this watch, I am very happy with it and definitely recommend it. A watch to me is more than a timepiece, it is a piece of jewelry. That’s what sets the MK Runway apart from a crowded smartwatch space. It looks great, it is well made, extremely lightweight (one of the lightest watches in my collection). You barely feel it’s there when you are wearing it (a few times I found myself checking to see if it fell off). It sits extremely well on my wrist and has been my go to daily watch now every day since I received it.
If you like the looks of the watch - buy it! There’s a ton of tech built-in, and I’m impressed by all of it. There’s a lot to like about the Runway by Michael Kors. If you already bought one - congrats! Awesome isn’t it? :-)

For the Gamer - these are worth your consideration
on October 7, 2018
Posted by: EagleCroft
from Exeter, NH
I want to set the ground rules for this review, specifically that this review is how these headphones perform for the Gamer. As an audiophile I am not going to review these as Music 'cans', as that is not fair. These work to play any audio material but they are not meant to be the the best in all categories. I have audio headphones that cost 4x what these cost, and they sound amazing for music - but sound bland for gaming. So those are the rules, these are designed for gaming use - and that's what I use them for. I've owned these for more than a month, and I'm now ready to give them a review.
The Good
These look great! They are stylish, without being silly looking (like some gaming headphones). Plus if you have an Alienware system, these will match!
The LED displays on the headphones are cool! But they are for your neighbors delight not your own.
The sound separation and placement is outstanding! Best I've heard! These give me an edge when playing and being able to discern where in the environment things are happening.
Very, very comfortable to wear for many hours on end. Alienware did a great job bolstering the ear pads, with a lightweight conforming material that doesn't hold heat and remains sweat free even after a full evening of game play.
Top quality build, no cheap materials. Soft touch plastics, strong joints, I have every expectation these will last a long time without falling apart. Upfront cost is steep, but when you consider their longevity the economy of them makes sense.
Good solid connection strength with no drop outs. I experienced no dropped connections ever, just a solid performer.
Bluetooth connection setup was fast an simple.
The earpads are easily replaceable. This is a huge benefit! I imagine I'll wear through a set of earpads in 6 months of use. Hopefully the replacements will be easy to buy and replace.
Thoughtful storage port on the bottom of the headset to keep the USB adapter.
Buttons are easily accessible on the side of the headset itself. This is extremely helpful and makes it so much easier than opening the app.
Amazing battery life (over 12 hours no problem), and fast recharge. I'm happy to see that they stayed with a USB 2.0 connector too.
Long warranty-but I doubt you'll need to use it.
Excellent sound pickup on the mic, with sound cancellation. Voice quality was quite good, and no drops.
Lots of audio (and visual) tweaks though the application.
The Bad
I had difficulty installing the application software on 3 different machines. On one system the installation seemed to destabilize the system. The system froze and I had to hard reboot. This was on a hand built PC, and there wasn't anything I could do other than uninstall the software. Unfortunately I can only use these headphones on that system using the included mini-plug cable (which negates all of the bells and whistles).
I really dislike the audio prompts telling me the "Mic is on', and other settings. I don't need to hear that blast in my ears. I haven't figured out a way to disable this feature, if there is then this dislike goes away. For now, it's annoying to me. But personal preference...
Beautiful packaging, but what a pain to remove! I don't quite understand why people get all excited about how cool something is packaged. It's not the package I'm buying or care about - it's the item itself. Anyhow I found them unusually difficult to remove from the package. But that's but me.
Fingerprint magnets - the soft touch plastics pick up fingerprints. Not a big deal, and they wipe off. But be careful not to use chemicals that will damage the plastic and stain them forever.
The application software is fine, but it's got a few bugs that need to be fixed. I certainly hope that Alienware will be pushing updates to solve these.
No Bluetooth - this is not a huge deal, because I didn't buy these for music. However... Bluetooth is standard on everything now, and now that Apple has ditched having a headphone jack on their cell phones - I cannot use these at all on my iPhones. I can use an adapter, I know - but honestly for this price point Bluetooth would have been nice.
The Power button is on the left side of the headphone. I packed these headphones away in my checked luggage recently. When I arrived at my destination I found the headphones had turned on after closing up my luggage. The battery was depleted by half. Is there a way to disable this? I really am disappointed that they turn on so easily while in luggage or a backpack. The power button is way to easy to accidentally turn on.
Battery not user replaceable. I can't see if there is a way for the user to replace the battery. I expect to use headphones for many years. If the battery starts wearing out I'd like to be able to put in a new battery.
Conclusion
These are keepers! I would buy them again, and can tell you they are worth your consideration if you are looking for a pair of gaming headphones that sound good, have long battery life, have a great performing headphone, and are super comfy. They are pricey, but like all things in life - you get what you pay for. These are akin to buying BOSE headphones, you're paying a premium, and not everyone can afford them. However you will have a great performing pair of headphones that not everyone else will have - and they'll bring a smile to your face every time you use them. And they'll 'up' your game!

Say 'Hello' to Rosie, my Robotic House Cleaner...
on September 24, 2018
Posted by: EagleCroft
from Exeter, NH
When I was a kid the Jetsons was a favorite cartoon I watched every Saturday morning. While mostly everything the Jetsons cartoon predicted hasn't come true (yet), George's robot house cleaner named Rosie has begun to evolve. As an early adopter in gadgets of all sorts, I purchased one of the first robotic vacuum cleaners the first year they were introduced. It was very cool, and worked pretty well. But that brand and model was very unreliable. That was my biggest complaint about that old model made by a different manufacturer. I repaired that thing so many times I eventually gave up on it, and it went in the trash like all of the dust and dirt it collected over time. Almost a decade later I decided to give these things a shot again, and after a month of using it I am still impressed. The BotVac D4 has been extremely reliable, and does a terrific job keeping my house clean. My home is half wood floors, and half carpeting. I've had excellent results on both, and was impressed by the amount of debris it picked up. The D4 does not have a spinning side brush, like my original iRobot vacuum had. But that's actually not a bad thing. I remember that with the old model with the spinning brush would literally bat debris all over the place. It was rarely useful. What this new D4 has going for it is a much better vacuuming system, an easier mechanism to remove for the dirt collector and to empty. A filter system that actually works, and a thoughtfully provided comb to give the filter a good cleaning. It all works very well! What makes a huge difference from the old robotic cleaners is the ability to map rooms and set no-go zones. With my old model you needed to set up these little towers on the floor which were there to turn back the cleaner. These are no longer needed, instead the D4 can map out the area it cleans on a connected smart device (a tablet for instance). Once it has been mapped you can go back in and very easily modify the map to block out areas you don't want the cleaner to go. It worked quite well, though I was happy to just 'Rosie' go wherever she wanted to. I had a lot of fun watching the D4 clean the carpeting. Why? Because it left a trail wherever it went. The imprints it left on the carpet were really cool geometric patterns (akin to crop circles come to think of it. Hmmmm). All joking aside the patterns it created demonstrated to me the work the engineers had done writing the algorithms to figure out the space and environment in which the D4 was 'learning'. It still does what most robots do these days, and that is they bump into things. Robots are still not as smart as your average cat, or fly for that matter. But they're coming along... The D4 starts off by pulling away from it's dock, spinning around to look at where it came from - then heads off on it's journey into "the unknown". The D4 uses laser mapping to elegantly deploy it's algorithms and moves itself as gracefully as possible throughout the space. Being the geek I admittedly am I watched for probably 30 minutes as it found its way through the downstairs. I watched and appreciated the movements it was making, I could tell how it was mapping and then deriving the next steps and course and direction. It was better watching than most TV shows! Why? Because it was demonstrating logic that some very smart engineers figured out. I can imagine these engineers going through scenarios that their robot would encounter in the real world, and how to solve each of those problems. I know I'm getting a bit off course (no pun intended), on the subject of a vacuum cleaner. But it's what this new robotic cleaner is all about. It is a very special demonstration of technology, repurposed to clean my floors. There is more processing power, and I bet lines of code in "Rosie" than was used to put the first astronauts on the moon and get them back home. It's the juxtaposition and absurdity of this notion which puts a smile on my face. It will be many years before we see anything like the Rosie the Robot house cleaner that George Jetson employed to clean his cool futuristic sky high pad. I probably won't see anything like that in my lifetime I'd bet. But this is an early glimpse. It's more than a vacuum cleaner, Rosie has become a part of my household - and you might not be surprised to hear me thanking it for cleaning my floors while I was away at work all day (definitely not at Spacely Sprockets)! Get one! Good Job Neato!

Water Resistant, Good Sound & Long Battery Life

In a lush (overflowing) bluetooth speaker landscape, it would be difficult to find something unique about the LG PK3 IPX7. What it has going for it at a sub-hundred dollar price point is LG quality, excellent water resistence, long battery life and good sound quality. In that order... Yes, I find the sound quality decent and acceptable for what I use it for. LG uses really good quality components, and build quality is excellent. I've bought other brands of speakers in the past that didn't survive long. While it's still early in my ownership of the PK3, I have no doubt it will last a very long time. Which is why I own it, it's realiable, it doesn't weigh much, it pushes out a good amount of sound volume, it'll handle being dropped in water, it's weather resistent, and the battery life is unbelievable. I love that if I get it dirty, if I get sand in it - I can rinse it off in the kitchen sink! I haven't used the built-in speakerphone, since that's not what I got it for. I'm sure it works just fine. I do have a couple of gripes though... LG used a Type-C USB connector for the power source. Meaning that the dozens of commonly used Micro-B cables I have laying around are incompatible. Ugh... That means if I lose it, or damage it I'll not be able to recharge it until I obtain a replacement Type-C cable. Not a huge deal, but why use a Type-C? There's got to be a reason... Right? The other gripe is also kind of a compliment - depending on your situation. LG does not provide a power adapter with the speaker. Yup, you get a Type-C power cable but nothing to connect it into. Now for me, I'm fine with it since I have about 50 of the things kicking around the house. So I'm fine! But... There might be someone who needs one. Minor gripe, it probably shaved twenty five cents off LG's BoM. On the bright side it's less waste in the long run, and keeps the landfills a little less full. Overall I give the LG PK3 IPX7 a solid BUY IT! Try it, you'll like it!

If you are looking for a bunch of decent sound for a little money, look no further and buy the CK43 audio system. I'm sure there are tons of better sounding and better looking systems you can buy - but for this price? I doubt it! I've compared systems from Sony, and Panasonic and nothing in the price range sounds as good as the LG. What I was looking for was room filling sound, for my garage. I am a typical home owner who works on their homes during the weekend. I needed a system that pushed out a bunch of music for not a lot of money. After trying several systems this one fit the bill the best. I'm not a huge fan of the way it looks, I'll be honest. But then again I'm an old school guy who misses the days when a receiver had an analog dial with a big knob. But that aside what this system delivers is really good audio and a lot of it - for a low price. There are a lot of features that I don't use, and probably never will. My needs were simple: stream my playlist loud enough for me to hear it in the garage and in the yard. The fact that you can connect multiple USB devices simultaneously is nice, but I won't ever use it. Maybe you will? The system will allow multiple other types of inputs, but for me I keep all my music on my iPhone - and it works perfect! A common marketing tactic is for music systems to tout high watt output. But that doesn't mean the sound will be any good! For me I prefer clean sound at an acceptable volume - and the LG delivers. I am very happy with the LG, and it's a keeper. It isn't without it's faults, I don't care for the way it looks, I think the system "feels" cheap - it's too lightweight! But shut off all the lights, use the convenient remote control to turn the system on and crank your favorite playlist - and everything else just dissolves away. I can't give this 5 stars because it isn't perfect - but it serves up amazing sound for a price that is hard to beat. Buy it, you'll not regret it.

I've gone through more trimmers than I can remember. I keep buying these $10 'miracle' trimmers you see advertised on TV. They are usually good for a couple of weeks, then get dull and fall apart. The MG7770 is the first time I have a trimmer that is actually a quality piece of equipment! As a more-than middle age dad, I have hair growing all over my body but not on the top of my head! So grooming is important if I don't want to look like Sacha Baron Cohen in the movie "The Dictator"! Ha!
Pro's:
-Sturdy construction, water resistant and easy to hold.
-Super super sharp! Be careful! Don't do what I did and think you can trim without an attachment. You will get cut! Trust me... I know!
-20 attachments! Philips/Norelco thought this out and provided every type of trimming attachment anyone would ever need for everyday grooming. Attachments galore!
-Quiet operation, lots of trimmers I've used buzz loudly - not this one!
-10 year warranty! But you have to register online to get it. If you don't register the warranty will be 5 years (still impressive).
-Quality travel case, nice construction, solid zipper, formed interior to keep things in place.
-Long battery life! I have never had it run out of power. It claims a 6-hour battery life and I believe it. But I plug it in when I'm not using it.
-Instructions are really helpful! Nice added touch that I didn't expect. Read the instructions before using this piece of equipment, it's worth your time!
Cons:
-The case could be designed better. Instead of tossing all the attachments into a meshed area, have an interior formed area where each attachment can 'click in', and be easily identified and removed. This would make reuse much easier.
-The charge adapter is on the bottom of the trimmer. Why wouldn't it be on the backside so the trimmer could stand upright when being charged? I have to lie it down instead and that's a bit annoying.
-The trimmer looks attractive with it's sleek body, but that's also a problem. In the shower it can be slippery. Why not make the body out of rubber, or some other material that is easier to hold onto when it's wet?
-Not really a 'con', but - it's super sharp. If you aren't careful you can cut yourself. Always use an attachment! You've been warned!
Overall I really like this trimmer, and look forward to using it for a very long time. Unlike the cheapo trimmers I've bought in the past, this one should hold up - which means in the long run it saves me money. Plus unlike the cheap trimmers, I won't be throwing it away and adding it into a landfill somewhere. It's an expensive upfront investment, but well worth it. I would absolutely recommend it. A bit of advice - like any quality trimmer I also recommend you clean and dry the blades after each use, and put a bit of light clipper oil on them. This will keep the blades sharp for a long time. I'm all nice and neatly groomed now. My dad bod hair has met its match! :-)

Stunning HD Picture Quality! WOW! It's a Keeper!

Video Projectors have been around a very time, I remember using one back in the 80's that was the size of a washing machine, had three large projector lenses for red, green and blue. The quality of those older systems were terrible, and it's not really fair to compare. The point here is that projectors have been around for years, and are definitely here to stay. The LG PF50KA is a huge leap forward in quality and capability, and I'm blown away by it's performance! I'm not going to bore you with all the technical details on this system, if you are like I am - you've already done your research which brought you to this projector. I hooked mine up quickly without any difficulty (I didn't even consult the manual initially). I happen to have a projection screen, back from the day when I used it to show 35mm slides (I know, I'm old...). The screen surface is perfect for projecting on, and displays amazingly bright and crisp video reproduction. A screen like this is also recommended if you plan on using the projector during daylight hours. No projector will provide the same quality in daylight, in a bright room as a typical TV set would. That's why movie theaters are dark! It's in a dark room that this projector shines (no pun intended). Besides the insanely good picture quality, LG also packed it full of great features! There are full plethora of APPS built-in, which you'd expect (NetFlix, YouTube, Hulu, etc.). I found each of the apps to perform perfectly well, with no lag or hesitation. I also plugged my FireStick in one of the two HDMI ports on the back, and it performed like a champ too. HD video content was awesome, with little to no banding noticeable. A huge benefit that this projector has over my 65" TV is that there are no viewing angle issues. You can sit anywhere in the room and see the same quality that you would sitting straight on. I really loved all of the ports provided in this projector, that allow you every conceivable way to input video. It even has a coaxial connector, which made me nostalgic since cable seems to be fading away in favor of streaming. I had a ball playing with this thing, trying out all of its cool features. I highly recommend taking the time to read the user's guide, and trying out everything before you mount the projector permanently. Although you really shouldn't mount this permanently anyhow since this mighty mini can run on it's built-in battery for up to 2 1/2 hours! I'm definitely planning on taking this on vacation with us, which should be fun! It's difficult to find any faults with the projector, since what's most important to me is the quality of the picture displayed. It is superb! I will say that the remote control isn't my favorite part of the projector. It took a bit of getting used to, and I really wish it was back lit. I don't know why manufacturers don't do this as a normal feature. The room is dark - how does one see the buttons? Seems like an obvious thing... The Setup initially on the projector is super simple, it walks you through step by step - and is completed in no time. I chuckled a little when it referred to the remote control included, and showed a graphic of a different remote control. LG needs to proof this, and clean that up along with its User's Guide. The guide is just "okay", I've struggled through much worse. I also wish there was more options in the Setup and Configurations menu. I suspect they don't add more settings on purpose as this unit is targeted at the typical family buyer. The less things to 'tweak', the better off the end user will be. This is exactly what Apple does too by the way, with its own products. Ultimately I connected my XBox One S via an HDMI cable, connected wireless to my home WiFi, and Bluetooth sound out to my AV Receiver. I watched Planet Earth 4K Blu-Ray and cranked the audio. It was amazing! I also watched Soccer and Nascar live - and the video was crisp and fluid. Really, really nice! I plan on doing more reviews on this unit as time goes on. It's capable of projecting up to 100 inches! I will have to clear a wall for that, but it'll be worth it! For now my 70" Da-Lite screen is just fine, actually it's incredible. Family movie night is forever changed and upgraded! If you are considering a projector for the home, for movies, for displaying photos, for streaming videos, for playing Xbox or PS4 video games on - get this unit! You will not be disappointed! You can spend more money on other projectors, but this one is a steal at twice the cost! I'm very choosy when it comes to electronics, and I don't hesitate returning something that doesn't impress me. This one made the grade, and it's definitely a keeper! Good job LG!

King of the Hill "Portable Bluetooth Speakers"
By EagleCroft from Exeter, NH
I'll admit it, I'm an audio snob. Unfortunately my wallet doesn't match my audio desires - so I try to get the best bang for my buck. I have tried many portable speakers starting at $50 and steadily worked my way up. I really didn't want to spend $200 on a speaker, but once I got to demo the Bose Soundlink Mini I found out that there was something very special about this little gem. I've tested speakers 2 times, even 3 times its size and none have reproduced the full spectrum and warmth of sound that the Soundlink Mini has. To be honest as a self-proclaimed audiophile I have shunned Bose products, they were always too mainstream for me - too mass marketed and price / value never made sense to me. I instead would opt for the more esoteric name brands (and still do). But in this case there is simply no competition at this price point (and Bose products never go on sale). Being able to pack this much sound into such a small case is just unbelievable. The engineers at Bose are simply magicians, or at least "wicked smart". It almost doesn't make sense when you hear this speaker playing, you expect to see a subwoofer hidden somewhere. I’d like to suggest to Bose that they change the name from Soundlink to “The Bose Tardis”, as its size belies its true capabilities (Dr. Who reference). I did several side by side comparisons with more than a half dozen Bluetooth speakers and the closest any one of them came was the UE Boom. The Bose has warmer tones overall, which I particularly like (vocals sound full, but not overdone). The UE Boom has better sound separation; the bass is good – but not as good as the Bose. Its upper end is crisp, and actually too bright for my ears. Of all the sub $200 speakers I’ve tried, these 2 are the crème of the crop. The edges out a win for me, but if I were more interested in portability (throwing the speaker in a backpack and heading to the beach), in that case the UE Boom is a better choice. The Bose is more of a home-body; it looks great perched upon its dock, charging. Frankly the Bose is too nice to bring outside. It’s not without its faults though, the Bose lacks a Line Out jack (which would be nice), and although it’s pointless to me some people might want a speakerphone built-in. The docking station is a great feature too, allowing you to quickly set it down to charge (and it looks good too). The Bose Soundlink Mini is a winner, buy it- you’ll not regret it.

Responding to posted question...
April 6, 2014
To the reader who asked for brand names of esoteric speakers I was referring to, I own a pair by B&W, and a pair by KEF. Not crazy priced speakers, but not mainstream either. I'm still extremely pleased with the purchase of the Bose Soundlink Mini. In fact I took the time to video a review of it, and comparing it to other similarly priced BT speakers (notably the UE Boom). Once I edit and clean up the video, add dialog - I'll be posting on YT. BTW, a couple of other notables about the the Bose: (1) it sounds great a low volume levels. Most reviews focus on how loud a speaker can get. Many times that isn't as important as how -good it sounds at low volume levels. The Mini really, really shines in this area. At low volumes the sound is still warm, and deep and well assembled. It's amazingly efficient. For comparison the UE Boom sounds good at loud volume, but loses its richness at a low volume and the bass all but disappears. Most small speakers suffer this same malady, play them softly and they sound like an old transistor radio. Not the case with the Bose Mini - it's wonderful. The other nice thing that the Bose engineers did (or should I said didn't do) is add all sorts of annoying confirmation tones that most other BT speakers have. I have no idea why other manufacturer's have followed this trend, I don't need to hear loud confirmation tones (or even human voices) to let me know when I power on or hit max volume. Bose is elegant and refined, and doesn't try to show off.

I want to use this as a speaker on my TV. Will it work for this purpose if I leave it plugged into a wall outlet for power all the time?

Sure! Just be aware that it uses a Type-C USB connector. The cable is provided, but isn't very long. So depending on your needs and access to a USB port - you may need to buy a longer cable. Otherwise it will need a typical micro audio connector cable to plug it into your TV (unless you use Bluetooth). I hope that helps.

Can I connect a turntable to this system? My current shelf system has an AUX input.

Chances are, no... It really depends on your turntable. Unlike most discreet audio components turntables require a preamp to boost the signal before it can be amplified. Some new turntables don't need this, so your best bet would be to check your owner's manual from the turntable and verify that it can run without a preamp.

How can I add speakers to this system. What speakers are compatible?

It comes with two speakers, that are attached with separate R/L +/- speakers wires. You can add more speakers the same way I'm sure, but be aware that the speakers are matched to the system. I'm not sure how many ohms the system speakers run on, and that's critically important to the efficiency and volume of sound. Remember 300 Watt RMS doesn't necessarily mean it can drive large speakers, chances are you need very efficient speakers with a low ohm rating to work well with this system. It's doable, but you'll have to do some homework to make it sound good.
