Gets small-to-mid-sized areas well-cleaned
on January 26, 2021
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
The Bissell TurboClean PowerBush Pet Carpet Cleaner does what it claims to do, and does it well -- though actual run-time (defined by the amount of solution that is carried in a container on the cleaner) is somewhat limited.
Let's start with this issue first. The plastic container that can be filled mostly with water and topped off with a particular Bissell solution looks to be about half- to three-fourths a gallon, which basically means you have up to 40 square feet before having to refill the container again. This process isn't difficult by any means -- it's simply different than if you're using a full-on carpet cleaner that likely has more mileage to go before having to change things out.
Regardless, when filling this container first with water up to its water line, and then topping off with an included sample bottle of solution to the solution line, I had no issues with getting stains out of our carpet. This includes both notoriously famous Georgia clay as well as run-of-the-mill pet messes (especially urine). These stains had been sitting for at least several months, and they were not pre-treated before I engaged the cleaner. Your mileage will definitely vary, but on a simple pass (based on operating instructions), I was able to remove virtually all stains, where only one was significantly reduced (I could have either made more passes against it, or simply give the stain a go again when I next set up to clean).
The instructions for setup and operation are clear and straightforward. The head of the cleaner appears to be a bit overly engineered (seriously -- if you get the cleaner, taking a look at it makes it appear like it's an elaborate labyrinth of compartments), however once you get the process down for draining used water/solution, you'll get how it works. Also, be sure to keep an eye for how far the head is filling; towards the top-left there's an open area that's covered by a filter sponge that will shoot spurts of water out if you let the head get too full.
In spite of the caveats (if you can call them that), I was really impressed with this cleaner. It will absolutely pick up pet stains (and, it looks like, others) from your carpet. There's only so much solution you can use at a time, so don't expect to clean an entire typical living room without filling up several times. And the cleaner doesn't get the floor horribly wet in the process, and the solution is pet-safe, so you don't have to worry about the right time to clean soiled areas.
A great introductory benefit to purchasing the cleaner is the 50% off coupon that comes with it, based on buying Bissell's three-product combo cleaner pack, which I naturally went after. That way, we're ready for the long term with whatever messes we get.
If you're looking for a good, basic carpet cleaner to pick up small to large soiled carpet spots, this is the one to get.

Quiet and effective air purifier
on January 19, 2021
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
The Blueair 480i certainly does its job while coming across in a living room situation like it's a cabinet.
During initial setup, the instructions were reasonably well thought out, except I didn't see anywhere that the filter had to be unpackaged (it's already in the unit and must have its shrinkwrap unwrapped before usage). Also, in setting up WiFi on the unit, it might take more than one try for the Blueair to connect to your existing network.
However, once WiFi is established, the free app is a breeze to work with. For our overall testing, I kept the fan speed at auto. Only during certain times or circumstances did I even hear the fan kick into high gear. For example, when we were cooking and created too much smoke, the purifier sensed this and remained at a faster fan state until the air was clear. This was the same for cooking that emits a stronger odor; it sensed this as well and quickly purified the air.
Overall, this is a great air purifier and I'd highly recommend it.

Solid Qi wireless charger with backup
on December 29, 2020
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As far as Qi-based wireless chargers go, the SanDisk Ixpand is a solid choice. It is both aesthetically pleasing and certainly gets the job done.
The biggest difference between this charger and other chargers that I've tested is the fact that it has a certain amount of storage space built in -- my device's storage is 128GB, to be exact. And there are some caveats to that storage option, which is why I rated this four instead of five stars.
First, note that the actual recharging capabilities simply work straight out of the box. Simply place your Qi-enabled device (not Apple Watches; though I don't know if they're strictly Qi-enabled or not) on the charger and it will charge.
Second, in order to have any sort of backup solution, you'll need to download the Ixpand Charger app, because the backup process requires Bluetooth and network access (your device, such as an iPhone, and the Ixpand charger have to be on the same network to fully back up. Here's the thing. The device will move, not copy, artifacts off of your device, and once that process is complete, it should then upload that backup to iCloud (assuming that's how you back yours up). Personally, I don't like that, because to me it means I now have to make sure that two separate places may potentially have data that I want backed up, where it's a lot easier for me to simply have a singular backup via iCloud.
Regardless, you can have multiple profiles on the Ixpand device, including the ability to secure the backups so nobody knows what your profile contains.
Overall, the SanDisk Ixpand is a great device, and if their backup process fits your needs, then once it's set up (the app doesn't have to be open for the backup process to complete), it's good to go.

It's like a professional Steady Cam in your hand
on November 29, 2020
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
The DJI Pocket 2 is a worthy pro-sumer device that should seriously be considered in any photographer's/videographer's portfolio of picture/video-taking devices.
It appears that, with every passing year and new devices that companies like DJI produce, amateur content creators such as myself and other family members inch closer to having the same capabilities in-hand that for years have only belonged to broadcast-quality devices such as Steady Cams.
The Pocket 2 definitely fits into this upgraded category.
While the device is definitely small, it is able to hold its own in terms of still photo and video capture. Among its repertoire of functionality includes the ability to auto-follow subjects via a screen-tap on the device. The biggest challenge here, however, is that the device's screen is no bigger than two average thumbs put together, but that's the only real negative I've found with it, so far. There is definitely the capability of attaching it to your mobile device (mine is an iPhone) for firmware updates as well as using that mobile device as a screen, per se (which inherently will limit what you can do with the Pocket 2, as you'll have the mobile device hanging off of it).
By itself, the Pocket 2 allows most memory cards to be inserted into it (you'll need to provide one separately; one is not included and will be required when updating firmware for the first time). As previously mentioned, setting for everything from language to shutter speed to image quality are fairly easily set with the device as well as the free DJI app that's used to set it up. The included battery does contain a reasonable amount of charge, but you'll definitely want to get the device to a full charge to really take advantage of it.
For my family and I, the biggest value with the camera is the gimbal; no matter how you move, video taking is exceptionally smooth and certainly above par what even the latest iPhone is capable of producing.
As far as underwater shots, we haven't yet been brave enough to try that aspect out, though I suspect we soon will, so perhaps get adventurous at your own risk!
All in all, I believe that DJI has made yet another fantastic device capable of approaching broadcast-quality footage with the same steadiness that professionals use for a fraction of the price.

A larger fryer for bigger needs
on November 17, 2020
Posted by: PhilGA

This wasn't the first air fryer that I've tried out for Best Buy, and it's nice to see another vendor getting into the market.
The CHEFMAN is definitely worth your time when it comes to making better food for your diet. Don't think that because the controls are all manual that this appliance won't do the job for you -- it will.
For most settings, you'll simply set the temperature and then adjust whichever additional control is required for how you're cooking and go -- pretty simple.
And yes -- you can toast up to six slices of bread in the CHEFMAN :)
If you're looking at getting a great convection oven/air fryer, this could be the appliance for you.

As long as you have a cigarette lighter that's in position for the Belkin Boost Charge to fit, you shouldn't have any issues in getting your devices charged.

Bose-quality audio in a small package
on October 29, 2020
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
The Bose Sport Earbuds are truly Bose-quality devices meant for all of your audio enjoyment. Their signature bass, effective midranges and quality highs definitely make up this earbud set.
Out of the box, the earbud pair was almost too simple to operate. You'll find them already ensconced within a Bose-branded recharging case sitting at 70% charged. There is an included short USB-C-type connector for recharging the base. The "Start Here" instructions have two steps -- first, download the mobile app (to set up/configure), then insert the earbuds into your ears.
As far as pairing goes, the iOS app (in my case) took care of that through a multi-step wizard that was pretty intuitive. Setup took less than 2 minutes. However, I also wanted to see if I could connect to a Windows 10-based laptop as well as a MacBook Pro (circa five years old). In both instances, as long as I depressed the Bluetooth button within the case, it would "disconnect" Bluetooth and allow the earbuds to be discoverable again.
The range is very good for these earbuds. I was able to go from my upstairs office and go downstairs and outside the house and still have excellent reception. Of course, beyond about fifty feet or so is when some static may set in, which is to be expected.
The only issue I see is that there don't appear to be any obvious touch-based controls on these devices. I'm not sure if I'm simply missing them or what; the incredibly short instructions give you no indication as to whether anything is touch-sensitive.
All in all, these are a great pair of earbuds that I'd recommend for anyone who is partial to the Bose name.

A great way to enjoy fried (and other) food
on October 20, 2020
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
Having used another air fryer previously, the biggest difference with the Bella Pro Series two quart fryer is the fact that it has a touchscreen display.
Overall, this is a great little fryer, and once you set a temperature as well as timing for cooking, it will take care of the rest itself (except for the times when you need to "stir" food, such as fries, in the food basket).
The fryer appears to be of solid construction, and it handily took care of cooking food that we threw at it.
If you've never had an air fryer before, consider this unit. It'll help show you what healthier eating is all about.

Excellent pro-sumer-grade Conference Phone
on October 13, 2020
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
The Anker PowerConference Bluetooth Speakerphone is, overall, a great pro-sumer-grade conferencing device, a device I would consider as more than sufficient for any sort of work-from-home (or otherwise remote) system when a speakerphone is needed. Although, with today's mobile devices more than capable of hands-free capabilities, it really does beg the question as to the true practicality of one of these devices.
Overall, when paired with a device such as an iPhone, the device works well. You'll have to use the phone to actually make the voice call, but you can use the mute and volume controls on the speakerphone to control those aspects.
Also, when connected to an approximately 5-year-old MacBook Pro using the included USB cable, while macOS does recognize the device, the only functionality I noticed was operable was whether or not you could pause any current audio/video source on the Mac; it could not directly mute the machine.
Further, if the USB cable is directly attached to the speakerphone, you cannot have calls used on the device. While iOS (for example) will recognize the Bluetooth connection, as soon as the call is connected, the device will revert back to iOS to control the call. If I could have made a call unhindered with the device while still plugged in, I would have given this review five stars instead of four.
Regarding USB, it does appear that this device doesn't automatically synchronize with iOS' Bluetooth function. I found that I had to explicitly go under Settings and Bluetooth to make the connection. Of course, as mentioned, once the connection was made, there were no issues.
If you do find the need for a separate speakerphone device, I'd highly recommend this device in spite of some of the minor limitations that it presents.

One of the best monitors on the market
on October 12, 2020
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
You can't go wrong with this 27" Dell Gaming monitor.
With two HDMI ports, it's possible to switch between HDMI sources with ease. In my situation, I've included this monitor with a separate HDMI hub allowing my PC to have a multi-monitor setup.
In this setup, the curved screen actually complements the setup. It certainly doesn't get in the way in the slightest (I've had such concerns in the past with monitors).
The on-panel firmware is also human-friendly. In a matter of seconds, the monitor will let you know if your video source is enabled and active, as well as if not -- there is no guessing here.
The nearly bezel-less design also allows corner-to-corner viewing of whatever content you want to throw to the screen. All pixels are active with no bleed and a crisp picture.
If you're interested in getting a great monitor, consider the 27" Dell Gaming monitor. It's great for games and more, and you don't have to get matching Dell equipment, either!

The iFLOOR BREEZE floor washer vacuums and mops hard floors at the same time. No more vacuuming and sweeping before mopping your floors. iFLOOR BREEZE does both simultaneously, in less time, and with better results. Lightweight, cordless, and powerful, the iFLOOR BREEZE removes tough, sticky messes from floors. This 2-in-1 powerful floor washer leaves less water on floors than competitors, so floors get cleaner, dry faster, and look their best.

Does the floor breeze wet/dry cordless stick vacuum-silver model ON button stay "ON" without having to hold the button down?

Yes.

Then again, having tested several models/makers, I don't know of any manufacturer who has created a model that requires you to constantly hold the power button down. That would speak more to there being an issue with the button's functionality in that situation.

Nugget Ice. Pellet ice. Drive-in ice. Whatever you call it, you know it's "the good ice." Now that chewable ice is available from the convenience of your countertop with the Opal 2.0 Ice Maker. It is capable of producing up to 38 lbs. of ice in 24 hours and stores up to 3 lbs. of ice at one time. The Opal 2.0 Ice Maker has WiFi connection capability and comes with the side tank attachment for 3x more ice production.

What's the difference between the Opal 1.0 (Sold online at other retailers) and the Opal 2.0 besides design?

Here are the major differences:

- The casing corners are now rounded
- The circle LED indicator has been replaced by "touch-sensitive" buttons on the front, as well as distinct word labels stating what the appliance is doing. This includes replacing the rear slider switch for cleaning with touch-button functionality in the front
- The plastic ice bin no longer has holes along the rear-bottom; a spring-loaded hole has been added that opens only when the bin is slid all the way into the appliance, thereby preventing drips when fully removing the bin
- Overall, the appliance does appear quieter, though that's more subjective
- Biggy: when draining the water while cleaning, it completely dumps in about 30 seconds. Previous units took minutes to do this.

I hope this helps!

Improve your confidence with the Upright GO posture trainer. The personalized program trains your body to notice when you're slouched, while the small, lightweight design makes it unnoticeable. This Upright GO posture trainer features an app on iOS and Android for real-time progress tracking and provides instant feedback once placed on your back.

How well does it stay on? If you work an outside labor job where you sweat a decent amount will it stay connected to your back?

To me, the bigger issue is whether a device that sticks out about 1/2 to 3/4 inch from your back would work with whatever gear you're wearing or carrying.

If that kind of size isn't an issue, I'm not sure how long the adhesive will continue sticking under your conditions. There's not more than half-an-inch wide by about 1 1/2 inches of adhesive to begin with.

Velop with Intelligent Mesh™ Technology is an award-winning family mesh Wi-Fi system created to work seamlessly together. Mix and match nodes with different speeds to modify performance or interchange colors to coordinate with your home style. Regardless of shape, size, or wherever your Internet comes in, Velop can be customized to your home. Which makes it easy to add more nodes as your home and family expand. Unlike traditional routers with range extenders, each node provides a powerful Wi-Fi signal throughout your entire home. It continuously self-organizes and optimizes to find the fastest path to the Internet for seamless Wi-Fi everywhere. Individual nodes may be connected wirelessly or by Ethernet for fast, reliable connection. This is an ultrasimple and powerful system that uses only one Wi-Fi network name and password to give you seamless and secure Wi-Fi. And leading-edge security lets you block content and easily pause the Internet for dinner or homework. It works with all Internet service provider supplied equipment and speeds, and its simple app-based setup will get you up and running in minutes.

Trying to find a system that works in a house over 4000 sq feet. WiFi extenders didn’t work. Have a Spectrum WiFi router. What router is compatible w/Spectrum that I can use with mesh system. Do nodes just plug in? Will be used for iPads and phones only.

I'd go with the taller Velops, as they work well with our gigabit ethernet (via Cat6 cabling in the house directly connected to our provider, Windstream).

This is a mesh system, which means that there's a backhaul channel across all three routers essentially tying them together, and then each router has two wifi bands for depending on how new or old your equipment is. Having three such channels means there's no bandwidth sharing at all -- each device has full access to all available bandwidth (unless you specifically set something up in routing differently).

I don't think you'll have a problem covering 4k square feet, unless you have a bunch of walls all over the place, and if that's the case, you'll have wifi issues no matter how you set things up.

Yes -- the nodes just plug in. All setup is controlled via the mobile app, and after you answer a couple of setup questions, the system is pretty self-managing out of the box.

Will this system directly plug into my century link router? Also, is the system compatible with the century link service? Thanks

In our area, we have Windstream, and we have fiber to the house at that. What happens is that we also have Cat6 ethernet cabling in the house. The only thing the tech did was make sure that the cabling that was coming from outside the house was properly terminated, and then that simply plugged into the bottom of one of my Velop nodes.

Then, we simply set up for PPPoE (username and password), and I was good to go.

It was extremely simple to set up and completely removed the need for us to use any other modem for signaling.

It works with all Internet service provider supplied equipment and speeds, and its simple app-based setup will get you up and running in minutes.

xfinity internet range extend in house?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, I did just this with my original set of taller tower Velops.

When setting up the main node that physically connects to the Internet, the app will seamlessly allow you to check whether you connect directly to the Internet or, as with any cable modem, you connect through that modem. The app takes care of all the rest of the setup from there.

You will have far better range than even with the Technicolor modems that Comcast provides.

This wireless headphones, cam I use it on a laptop and do the laptop need to be bluetooth or is there a adapter that I can plug to my laptop to make it wireless? Can you please let me know. Thanks

Yes, can be used on a laptop. In fact, I received a review unit and did just that.

Since this is not a Bluetooth-based device, it uses what I call a USB wireless bridge (small square box that's included with the headset) in order to communicate with a PC. This will require a free USB port, and the charging cable (if simultaneously charging and listening) will require a second USB port.

Is this a Freesync monitor? I keep getting conflicting information.

I would have to say, no. Typically, such features are advertised explicitly enough to where you'd know, but for under $300, don't count on it.

Make your home an internet haven with this versatile Linksys Velop wireless Wi-Fi system. Three identical tri-band dual-stream AC2200 routers, each equipped with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor, deliver lightning-fast internet. Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0/LE, this Linksys Velop wireless Wi-Fi system is simple to set up and pairs easily with computers, tablets and smart devices.

Can the Velop be easily integrated into a AT&T U-verse setup either to act as the router or be placed into bridge mode? I'm primarily interested if the Velop can be placed into bridge mode which would make the Velop an access point.

We have Xfinity Internet using our own modem/router combo. When setting up the VELOP system, any existing network configurations are completely separate from the VELOP mesh network. In fact, on initial node setup, all that's required is to have a physical Ethernet cable routed from the VELOP node to your existing modem/router Ethernet port (non-WAN). The Linksys app then has the VELOP node configure itself for Internet access.

Unless you really want to go the bridge route with your existing setup, the VELOP mesh network allows for its own wifi SSID setup without bothering anything currently existing.

I hope this helps!
