Powerful lock no subscription or power required
on October 24, 2022
Posted by: mkcar1
Another great product from Eufy. I have used Eufy products for several years and have never been disappointed. Considering their quality, pricing, ease of use and no added subscription costs I highly recommend
Nicely packaged and comes with everything you need to install/setup.
Installing the smart lock could not have been easier. My existing lock matched perfectly to this device and as such switching out internal deadbolt was easy. I charged the detachable battery overnight before installing using USB-C connection. Then following directions, I installed outside half of door lock then inside half. I did need assistance to hold pieces together while I attached power cable and screwed everything together.
Instructions indicate that base should be added 1st in app. It does not need to be hard wired to ethernet. as was the case with the “old” Base 2 I currently have. This allows it to be plugged in anywhere that has signal to your Wi-Fi – but it is also serves as the doorbells chime so need to consider that when placing. It also included 16GB micro-sd card (although it states that is not included) which can be upgraded, for storage of videos. I already had the Eufy app, so I just choose to add new device, bringing up a list to choose from. I initially selected the incorrect base (pictures are tiny and didn’t realize the front was different on my selection) so when I scanned QR code, on device, it gave me an error. I finally realized my mistake and selected correct base and it walked me thru setup. Once base was connected it was time to add the door lock. I scanned the QR code on back that generated another QR code on my phone which I scanned using the locks camera. It then walked me thru rest of setup. I had no issues synching units nor connecting to Wi-Fi.
Smart lock is thoughtfully designed and seems sturdily built. Adding my thumbprint took only a minute as did adding the security code using keypad. It recognizes my thumbprint immediately to unlock/lock and using keypad is easy as well.
Day and Night motion detection seems to be very good with very little lag starting recording – captures pretty much all the action. High def 4:3 aspect ratio 2K (2650 x 1920) videos with 160-degree field of view. You can setup an area for detection using drag lines to set. Using its AI you can set motion sensitivity and whether to use human or all motions. You can view live and/or record anytime using app and can save (download) recordings to phone.
Having the detachable battery will make recharging very easy. Also, the outside portion of lock has an emergency USB-C power connection in case unit runs out of power and you are locked out. The app gives battery percentage of charge. I believe this uses Eufy’s standard 256-bit encrypted connection.
App itself is one of the better ones I have used and found it easy to navigate in. It has extensive settings letting you manage sensitivity, length of recordings, quality of recordings, message alert style, etc. and has built in access for help.
It is a little hard to see the lock in darkness of night but there are 2 red sensors that light up allowing you to determine exactly here the lock is. As you get closer the doorbell lights up with a ring around it and if you touch keypad area it lights up. Not sure if I don’t have something set correctly but fingerprint doesn’t light up but still easy enough to use. You can lock/unlock remotely as well.
1 year warranty.
I am concerned about heat affecting the smart lock. I had an Eufy doorbell that I initially hard wired into existing doorbell that would “fail” when the sun hit it all day (live in desert and west facing front door with temps easily above 100). I had to move doorbell to other (more shaded) side of door for it to work continually. I hope that having the battery on the inside (air conditioned) that the smart lock will not be affected by the heat.
Also, these devices cannot be synced using base 2 – you must use the provided base. New base has advantage of having a micro-sd slot and does not require an ethernet connection. I see in the app there is a new base 3 option that will connect to any of Eufys devices and allows for external hard drive up to 16TB – for an additional cost of course. Would have been nice to have that included.
It seems you can only have 1 fingerprint and code “registered” at a time.
I don’t believe there a computer application to work with Windows, etc. So, you have to use android or apple to access.
Overall, another great product from Eufy and while this new smart lock is rather large, and heavy, it works as advertised and I highly recommend.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Fast and Sleek
on September 17, 2022

This has everything you need for gaming, but it is also great for work/everyday processing needs. I really like the design of this laptop a lot (elegant comes to mind) and since I have always had Intel I am impressed with its AMD processing power and video capabilities. All of this wrapped up in a size that is more portable (4.5 lbs.) than most gaming laptops. If you are looking for something to game with but can also help you in daily processing needs this fits the bill nicely.
It has run anything I have thrown at it. Running my games seamlessly (I don’t game nearly as much as I used to and when I do, they are more pedestrian these days and I don’t use RT). Running 2021 Adobe Photoshop and Premier (video) Elements editing is very fast as is moving files, word processing, excel, etc. Also, I looped a 1080P video with Bluetooth off and Wi-Fi on and it ran for almost 9 hours before battery went into safety mode.
It was very quiet during most of the Windows and Lenovo updates as well as doing my editing, etc.
There are confusing options to wade through between MS, Lenovo and 3rd party software to tune performance/functions.
The design is sleek and looks great in flat/ shiny grey. The LCD QHD matte screen with 16:10, 2500x1600 resolution, 165Hz, 10bit color and 500 nits – provides fantastic reflect free viewing. It is also Dolby Vision, HDR400 certification. Screen lays completely flat and is connected at each end to base. Seems very sturdy.
On/off/fingerprint is in the top middle of keyboard and close to screen hinge. This makes it hard to get finger read sometimes.
1TB SSD looks to be Samsung MZVL21T0HCLR-00BL2 PCIe 4x4. CrystalDisk score was fast at 6629.11 MB/s read and 4971.33 MB/s write speeds. Looks like 2TB is max you can add with no 2nd internal drive – why?
16GB with 8GB soldered in and 8GB DDR5 4800 slot. Specs indicate 16GB is max which is a tad disappointing, especially given 1 slot is soldered.
Backlit keyboard options seem to be off or on low/high. Option to turn on when dark and touching a key doesn’t seem to be available, at least I could not find it – but again many different software/hardware controls to wade through so I may find it yet. With laptops size the keys are quite large and easy to read but I found them to be a tad resistant when pressing. You can control array of keyboard color options which is fun to play with.
Trackpad is decently large with offset to the left but is centered on space bar. Moving mouse is very responsive but I don’t do taps, just left/right clicks so cant speak to that functionality.
Speakers - Harman 2 x 2W with Nihimic sound technology. I initially didn’t have this on and was dis-appointed with the sound but once Nihimic was turned on and tuned I was very happy with the sound.
Wireless is AX is as fast as it gets.
SD card slot. Why use SD – why not micro-sd so card does not stick out when using/traveling?
1 Headphone/Mic jack
E-shutter button to turn off camera. Nice for security.
2 USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 connections – 5Gbps on left side.
2 USB-A Gen 3.2 gen 1 connections in back with 1 powershare always on.
Power connection is in the back. Power cord is long and has reasonably sized inline block. I have a USB-C 100W charger and was able to charge using that as well. So, you can leave the brick behind…
No Thunderbolt port and I wondered why. Seems Thunderbolt is licensed by Intel – which explains why AMD doesn’t support/have it.
No ethernet connection.
No displayport.
1-year warranty.
There are a lot of things to like about this laptop, especially if you want a portable gaming rig. But it doesn’t seem to be very up-gradable friendly as some competitor’s machines are. But overall, a nice user experience and do recommend

Should lighten your travelling load
on September 17, 2022
Posted by: mkcar1
Since USB-C has a become a “universal” port supporting data transfer, charging and even monitor connections it is surprising how many laptop manufacturers are still shipping units with clunky power “bricks”. This unit can replace those “bricks” as well as also charge your phone.
I highly recommend especially if traveling.
There is no setup – just plug charger into AC then connect your device using USB-C connection.
Base is a tad large (2.5 x 2.5 x 1.5 in) but AC plug-folds into unit. Plug is set very high up in base, so it doesn’t block another outlet on wall socket.
2 USB-C power connections. 1 port 100W – 2 ports 65W + 35W….
8 ft Cable which is more than long enough, but why only 1.
I used it to charge;
Google Slate tablet (2019) – charged matching its 45W provided USB-C charger
Samsung Notebook Pro 9 (2017) – charged and seemed to match provided “brick” speed.
Samsung S8 SM-950U phone (2017)– indicated fast charging mode using USB-C cable
Microsoft Surface Go 3 (2021) – charged and seemed to match provided brick speed.
Samsung Galaxy 360 Laptop (2022) – charged and seemed to match provided 65W USB-C charger.
Lenovo Legion Laptop (2022). Charged and seemed to match provided “brick” speed.
I charged most of the above 2 at a time with no issues. But the screens did “blip” on/off when connecting 2nd unit so maybe power was being re-adjusted for 2 connections? Also, some did have a pop-up message about lower charging levels, etc. – but all still charged.
1 year warranty
Negatives;
If I am reading specifications correctly 100W is provided only if using 1 USB-C connection – drops to 35W & 65W if using 2. Would be nice to have both 100W?
Nothing to indicate power is on. A little led light would be nice in case you plug into a “switched” outlet and don’t realize it isn’t turned on (might have personal experience with this one).
Why not provide 2 cables?
Only 1 year warranty when some competitors provide limited lifetime.
Overall, a nice unit that will lighten my traveling load.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Makes you warm all over
on September 15, 2022
Posted by: mkcar1
This unit has a lot of positives going for it and do recommend but it does need to be plugged in.
Unit was nicely packed although styrofoam was everywhere. Just had to attach the 2-piece base, take out the black support discs from the column and I was ready to plug in and synch with its app. The instructions came with a QR code directing you to the correct app download for android/apple. Once downloaded I opened app and selected add unit and it was synched very quickly. A voice from unit tells you when synch is complete, and I will say most of my neighbors were aware too as default was 100% volume.
The heat switch controls on/off and heat setting. You can set heat to low (750w) or high (1500w) but I am a little disappointed it didn’t have sliding temperature adjustment (maybe even set temp in app?), but it works fine. Where I am at it is still over 100 so was worried it might be hard to test the heating – but at low setting I could feel the heat sitting a few of feet away within minutes. The heating element runs through the middle of the unit providing 360 degrees radiant heat rather than being deflected top down as most propane heaters do. The safety frame around the heating element stays relatively cool. I ran unit for 15 minutes on low and could wrap my hands around the frame, after another 15 minutes on high I could still touch the frame without being burned. This is very important to me with 2 grandsons running around and why I am also concerned about them tripping over the cord. But I decided to use a cover for the cord, such as is often used in offices to help alleviate that issue. The base is heavy, and it seems sturdy – the unit has a built-in safety switch to turn it off should it get tipped over. Cord is about a tad less than 6 feet in length. I feel they have done all they can to insure it is safe.
The speaker/LED RGB lighting has its own on/off switch. There are multiple settings for the lights such as selecting color(s), flashing frequency, brightness, etc. There is also an equalizer for sound settings. For some reason, and maybe it’s the music app I am using (or operator error), but I had to have the sound up very high on phone and heater to hear any sound. The sound was good just had to crank it up. Instructions indicate you can daisy chain multiple units.
The upside is the unit is light weight and easily moved around but does not have built in handles. Its nice not having to lug around propane tanks and hassle with refilling/replacing them.
The downside is you need to be able to plug it in, so if power is out or no plug around its not usable.
Overall, a nicely built unit that I look forward to using as it gets cooler.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Twin Towers of air purifiers
on July 12, 2022
Posted by: mkcar1
The design is tall at 45 inches and heavy at 27 lbs. – making it a tad difficult to move around. I personally like the design but may not fit into everyone’s home decor. I have tested 4 other air purifiers from different manufacturers, and this is the one I moved into my family room. It is very quiet but powerful if need be and effective at cleaning the air. Simple use/setup and ease of filter replacement with 10-year motor warranty all add up to make it a very nice option in the crowded purifier field - and I recommend.
Unit was nicely packaged. Just pull up outside box, remove wrapping from around filter and fan blades in the towers and plug it in. Make sure you check the packing though as the base for the unit is taped to the top foam packing (I had to dig it out). I already had LG ThinQ app installed for another device so just clicked add new device and followed directions – adding to wifi was easy too. Apps main screen shows air quality/ and whether unit is on/off, shows room temp and humidity. You can control mode (wide/diffusion/direct), fan speed, rotation, set schedule display brightness and turn UV on/off. I found the app to be easily navigated and very easy setting up schedules on/off times.
All the unit’s physical controls are on the top of the towers controlling on/off, fan speed, mode, auto fan speed and rotation (45, 60, 90 140 degrees or stop). Certain buttons have dual purposes if pressed for 3 seconds or more.
Handheld remote is included as well. You can control on/off, fan speed, mode, info (on base screen), Turbo, auto fan speed, rotation and sleep timer. There are dual functions here as well using long press of 2 seconds or more controlling continuously change fan speed, product sound and display brightness. The handheld stores by magnet on the side of the unit.
The unit seems to have very good sensors and as molecule numbers are continually changing as we go about our day.. The unit is in our family room, which has an open wall to our kitchen, so it is influenced greatly by what/how we are cooking. We have a convection oven, and it really affects air quality when using it to “fry” something as opposed to baking, etc. I have mentioned on other purifier reviews that I wonder how many cooking particles I have breathed in over my lifetime, as when I grew up everything was fried in an open skillet on the stove. In addition to showing micron levels base unit screen changes color – green = good (PM10 of 54 or less and a PM2.5 and PM1.0 of 12 or less), yellow = moderate (PM10 of 55 to 154, and a PM2.5 and PM1.0 of 13 to 35), orange = unhealthy )PM10 of 155 to 254, a PM2.5 of 35 to 55, and a PM1.0 of 36-55) and red = poor (PM10 of 255 or more, PM2.5 of 56 or more and a PM1.0 of 56 or more)
This is the quietest unit I have used so far even exceeding my prior favorite Levoit 400S unit, and is rated for 818 sq ft.
Documentation states it has a HEPA filtration system eliminating up to 99.97% of fine dust and allergens. Unique to LG it also has UVnano LED technology. Using UV light, it is supposed to help keep the fan blades clean of bacteria, killing 99.9% while running. Replacement filter is listed at $99 on LG site.
It has a unique way of oscillating as the entire unit moves back and forth on the supplied base (that you must attach). Interested to see if any issues over time.
There is also an option to lock the units’ controls, which my youngest very inquisitive grandson won’t be happy about. But it’s too tall for him to access the top controls anyway so maybe I’ll just hide the remote.
1-year warranty with 10 years on motor if registered.
Between the app, device and remote control suffice it to say you can set it up exactly - running it when and how you’d like. Highly recommend

Just a tad short of being great
on June 20, 2022
Posted by: mkcar1
I have used a Satechi Thunderbolt 4 dock for awhile and it has been great, if pricey. So was looking forward to testing this unit from them.
The stand is nicely designed and lightweight with easy access to the ports/jacks/slots in the front. Its rounded edges give it a modern look as well. The opening I feel is very small at a tad less than 1 inch height and 14 inch width. Allowing for only small laptops and there is no way a keyboard would fit.
There is no setup – just plug adapter into USB-C on computer. The 26-inch connecting cable stores under the top of the stand using clips – with length easily adjusted.
You can connect;
1 USB-C – 5 Gbps
3 USB-A – 5-Gbps
Micro & SD card slots
Headphone jack
LED indicator usage light
States you cannot charge from any of the ports.
The stand put the monitor (Lenovo all-in-on) at a nice viewing height.
Since all the Lenovo connections are in back of the monitor it is cumbersome to use the ports. Having them all in front is very nice.
I tested disk speeds using CrystalDiskMark8 and a M.2 PCI-e 500GB drive. Using the Lenovo I tried the drive connected directly to the USB-A and C ports in back and then to the stands corresponding ports. I got virtually the same initial read speeds of 454 MB/s and write speeds of 437 MB/s. Which would indicate there is no loss of speed using the stand.
Micro-sd card goes in pin side up which is odd to me. I also had some issues getting it seated and extracted. Also had an SD adapter, and it went in pin side down and had no issues using it.
Headphone jack worked great although instructions mention making sure it is selected but I had no such issues. When plugged into stand sound was thru there and when unplugged sound came through computer.
1-year limited warranty.
Negatives are size and no monitor or ethernet connections. And no charging options.
Overall, a nicely designed stand and I do recommend but make sure that it fits your size requirements.

The Steelcase Series 1 chair has a LiveBack flexor system in the backrest which conforms to your body and moves with you to support the spine as you change postures. The tilt mechanism is synchronized; the seat and back work in harmony with each other, keeping the body securely supported in the chair and feet firmly planted on the floor so you can recline without leaving your optimal zone for seeing and reaching your work. Feature set includes an adjustable seat depth, fully adjustable arms, adjustable lumbar, pneumatic seat height adjustment, recline tension adjustment (weight activated with adjustment and lock), flexing back with mesh upholstery, upholstered seat and wheels for hard flooring. The seat features strong yet pliable foam which conforms to the body and creates pressure-free comfort. Flexible seat edge offers a bit of bend, right where you need it – relieving pressure points under your thighs. This chair will arrive unassembled and require some assembly and is covered by a 12-year warranty.

My back thanks you

I have tried 3 chairs for my home office since I retired 8 years ago and none gave me the support, seating setup options or comfort this chair provides. The main issue I had in selecting a chair was it had to fit in the chair opening of my 30-year-old metal desk (just cant get these anymore) and this chair fit fine in the opening. As I have gotten older back support has become more important to me and this feels great when sitting and even more important once I get up after hours sitting.
Very minimal packing so much so I was worried that the chair may have been damaged in shipping – but no worries there.
Once unpacked it was together in less than 5 minutes and instructions have a QR code if you care to watch a video on assembly.
I wheeled into my office and set to adjusting the;
Seat height
Seat depth (nice option)
Back tension/angle
Lumbar (slide adjustment on seat back)
Adjustable arms – height/width/pivot/depth. They also move when the back is moved.
Also has 5 casters that are smooth, quiet and give solid base to chair.
12-year limited warranty
Dislikes;
Only 3 options for back tension/angle. Less tension, a little bit more tension or locked. Would be nice to have a more tunable range of tension and can only lock in upright position.
Back seemed a tad short as top hit me middle of shoulder blades. Still very comfortable but would help support my head better if higher.
Back cannot be adjusted up/down.
Seat padding seems a tad thin to me, but I have a what in the old days would be termed a boney backside.
The chair seems very solidly built and is very comfy overall and looks great and I look forward to many years of use.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Small, fast very portable drive
on May 26, 2022
Posted by: mkcar1
This drive is fast, durably built and light at 2 oz and is about the size of a credit card. It would be a great addition for anyone but especially those traveling. Samsung is a leader in hard drives and this unit does not disappoint. I recommend but be sure your computer can take advantage of the speed.
Drive is preformatted as GPT and exFAT. I tried speed tests with exFAT and NTFS (after reformatting) and saw little difference.
In the box;
Minimal instruction manual that has print so small it was virtually unreadable to my old eyes. So out came the strong reading glasses.
2TB black T7 drive – 2 oz and 3.4 x 2.2 x 0.3 inches in size. Claimed 1050 MB/sec read and 1000 MB/sec write speeds.
Comes with a USB-C to USB-C and a USB-C to USB 3 cables. The cables are around 17 inches in length, which should be more than long enough for most.
Positives;
I would suggest installing Samsung Magician app. I already had Samsung Magician installed as I have internal Samsung drives. It will check firmware, etc. for drive as well as giving you the option to encrypt the drive with a password.
The drive is nicely constructed with a protective rubber cover that is wrapped around an aluminum unibody case. The cover not only protects but helps you get a nice grip on the drive as well as helping secure it wherever placed – no sliding. It easily fits in your pocket and is built to be tossed around stating it can be dropped from 6 feet, is water/dust resistant. I have to say that I did not test any of these but given its construction I don’t doubt its claims. Internally I assume there is a 2TB M.2 PCIe SSD drive, but I could not determine the exact model.
Speed tests:
I like to use CrystalDiskMark for my speed tests as writing to/from other drives to test speed is impacted by the speed of the other drive. This way only this drive is test. I used my new Samsung Galaxy 360 laptop. It has Thunderbolt 4.0, USB C and USB 3.2 connections. Using Thunderbolt, I got 1070 MB/s read and 1016 MB/s write – both a touch higher than rated top speeds for T7. Using USB C & USB 3.2 connection I got nearly identical 463 MB/s read and 455 MB/s write speeds- still fast. I did not notice any change in temp on the drive when running my speed tests.
To give some context to those speeds;
I ran same test using a Samsung 2TB USB 3.0 external “spin” drive I have had for a while. There was little difference between Thunderbolt, USB C and USB 3.2 – they were all around 113 MB/s read and 114 MB/s write.
I also ran a test using a self-built external SSD using a KIOXIA 512GB PCIe drive I had left over from an upgrade to another laptop, using a SSK case. Thunderbolt gave 1075 MB/s read and 979 MB/s write. The USB C and USB 3.2 speeds again were nearly identical with 457 MB/s and 444 MB/s write.
Speed tests for the Samsung Laptop using internal model MZVLQ512HBLU-00B 500GB drive I got 2207 MB/s read and 1191 MB/s write. Interesting that the read was more than twice the speed of the T7 but write was about the same, probably due to buffering(?).
Also, to give a little context on pricing – in November 2018 I received a G-drive 500GB portable SSD drive with price of $150. My Samsung 2TB USB 3.0 external drive was $110 a few years ago.
3-year limited warranty
Negatives;
Activity light is on the same side as cable connection, so just a tad hard to see unless you flip drive
Yes, the T7 is a tad pricey but considering size, weight and speed advantage as well as the nearly 0 chance of it being damaged if dropped – it is a great option, and I would highly recommend it. My only caveat is to be sure your system can take advantage of the speed this drive can provide.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Mattress in a box – who knew? I have seen a few advertisements but I must admit that I was skeptical, of purchasing a mattress in a box, online! But considering overall quality (looks nicely put together), cost (just more than half of our last mattress), ease of purchase, delivery and unpacking/setup - what’s not to like?
After spending months trying to decide on our last mattress this is a great option and time saver. I found the mattress to be very comfortable, but a tad firm initially. It was too firm for my wife, so we added a padded mattress cover, and she was very happy then.
We received the queen size, and I didn’t weigh box but guesstimate over 50 or so pounds. Box had holes to help lift/move a round which I was able to do by myself. In my haste to unbox I didn’t take a picture of mattress before unrolling but it looks like a cinnamon roll. I put the mattress on the end of the bed, cut open the plastic wrap and unrolled – repeating until mattress was fully extended. We did place it on top of a box spring, which is suggested, but it states it can be used without.
After unrolling it was about half its ending height. We left it to “rest” for a couple of hours, like waiting for dough to rise. I was concerned about the corners, but it ended up fully “formed” with everything looking normal. It is about 7/8 of the height of our old mattress so the sheets are a tad loose, but really a non-issue.
The look of it is nice. Construction is foam with 2 inches of gel on top. It cannot be “flipped” due to design, but it states it should never “cave” (those indentations that look like a ghost is lying in the bed).
As I stated I was very content sleeping on it, even the 1st night. But as my wife reminded me, I could probably sleep standing up – which served me well in my traveling days.
Has a 10-year limited warranty.
Overall, I am now sold on these mattresses in a box and will look to purchase when our other mattress needs replacing. Great alternative to “normal” mattresses.

Protect yourself in the event of an accident with this ESCORT dash cam. The built-in collision detection system stores important footage in the event of a crash, and Wi-Fi connectivity lets you instantly share data with your insurance company. This ESCORT dash cam uses super-capacitor technology to keep recording, even in extreme temperatures.

the BestBuy site recommeds buying 128gb card, however the Escort website says: Q: What is the largest size microSD card I can use with the Escort M1? A: The Escort M1 supports up to 32GB microSD cards. WICH SIZE IS THE CAM MEM. LIMITED TO?

I swapped out the 16GB with a 256GB micr-sd and it formatted fine (fat32) and has been recording fine. I have not recorded enough to actually confirm it will use all 256GB, but it accepted it.
