The "instant-on" get the job done convo-laptop

Want a machine that is there when you need it? Hit a button and *BAM* it's on? Want it to look *darn* good also? Well then, you need a pixelbook!
Many have already gone over the (VERY!) impressive specs so far, so I will not regurgitate them here. However, the RAM, and processor in this machine make it FLY. If all you are used to are Mac and Windows machine's (nothing against them personally) then you will be impressed with the speed as well.
The body is 100% aluminium and screams high-quality and class. It would appear that this also makes the product more rugged. Though, I'm not going to throw it like Frisbee and find out!
There is a glass panel up-top, to match the look of this devices' cousin, the Pixel phone. Which - if you have both, you can unlock the book with the phone, and instantly use your carrier's mobile data if you're out of WiFi range.
Everyone seems to be hung up over Chrome-OS, marking it as one of the "negatives". Some claim that you can do 90% of what you need to do. So what is the reality? Owning several chromebooks prior to this, I will say the only thing you cannot do is any intensive video editing. Not because the pixelbook isn't capable (because it definitely is!) but because there aren't any quality video editing apps.
Everything else (yes, you heard me correctly!) everything else can be accomplished with this pixelbook. So if editing/making fancy videos isn't your thing - then this is for you.
If you don't like the google office apps, you can either use the only MS Office apps, or download the very capable versions in the play store.
Speaking of which, there are several other more than adequate office suites in the playstore (WPS, etc).
So really, the claim that Chrome-OS or the lack of apps in the playstore (??) keeps this from being a fine machine is quite the claim. Perhaps it is the operators' inexperience with the chrome eco-system that leads them to this conclusion? Either way, it can and DOES get the job done. No doubt about it.
The Pixelbook has a few different modes (used as laptop, or a tablet, tent etc). But honestly, I have yet to fold it out of laptop mode as the keyboard and trackpad are one of, if not THE best i've ever used (and I have used many!).
Battery life is also very good on this machine! With the screen at 60% brightness, I've been going close to 10hrs, with 42% left to go. However, I'm sure different situations (gaming, etc) will decrease this slightly. But, everyone knows that battery life is one of the key strong-points of chrome products.
The speakers are plenty loud and clear. If,however, you were expecting audiophile quality sound from any laptop, then you will always be disappointed haha.
The only negative thing I can think of is the cost. It's not that you don't get your monies worth, as you certainly do! It is just up there in the "perhaps I shouldn't be spending this much on a (insert piece of gadgetry here)" level.
If you are familiar with the chrome ecosystem and want a machine that blows many MANY out of the water - then the pixelbook is for you. If you are new to the scene, and can afford it - go for it! Otherwise I would suggest you go for one of the lower cost chrome-books that are on the market to get a taste of the chrome-os.
Remember, the pixelbook can do just about everything WIN/MAC can do. I personally think it's a Mac-killer - but that's just IMO!

For a *~REAL~* Home Theatre experience!

As TV's are getting bigger and bigger (and with seemingly shorter lives, IMO), i decided to "upgrade" to a projector instead of getting (yet another) "latest and greatest" television set.
My needs are simple:
Be able to connect to my A/V equipment (Cable/DVD/Blu-Ray/Amplifier/etc).
Maintain quality I've become accustomed to.
And as a third point - be reliable and have solid construction.
This lead me to the BenQ HT1070A!
Some have called this unit "the imax for the bedroom", and while that is certainly accurate in my experience, you must keep in mind that with virtually ANY projector, the room has to be darkened to some extent. To my delight, however, my existing shades and blackout curtains work (I work nightshift, so ;) - I knew it would eventually pay off.. Hahah).
For now, I have the image projected on our bedroom wall. The unit itself is sitting on the other end of the room on a bookcase. With such a short distance between the screen and the unit itself, the unit (flawlessly, I must add) projects a crystal clear 100" image on the wall (though, it can be made as big as 180"!). The projector offers a feature which lets you tweak the skew of the projected image in case it isn't straight on. This fixes the problem that many other projectors have in which your projected image isn't perfectly squared (for lack of a better term). I was skeptical at first that a sub $1k projector could have such quality. But, my skepticism was (very) short lived. Watching DVD's/Blu-Rays feels like you are actually at the movie theater. To say I love this would be the understatement of the century!
The unit itself has 2 HDMI inputs. One I am using for the Blu-Ray/DVD, the second, for my HDMI out from our HD cable box. I haven't had time (yet) to connect to our audio system, but, another shocker, is that the on-board audio is very decent! So this is good news for those that don't have elaborate audio systems. It's definitely "passable'.
The projector has many different settings for picture quality, so you a free to tweak them to your heart's content (if that's your thing). However, I found that many of the "out of the box" settings were perfectly fine. The only thing you may need to manually tweak (actually, I'm 100% sure you will) are the physical focus and zoom knobs on the unit itself. This is rather straight forward, and any non-techie person could probably pull it off.
If you are building a special media-room; even better! This projector, like most would probably benefit from a ceiling mount (though, again it's perfectly fine just sitting on a book-case), as well as having it be window-less or in a minimal light environment. With that said, if you just close your curtains/drapes/shutters/etc - that should provide satisfactory light reduction, IMO.
To sum it up - if you are in the market for an HD projector that won't break the bank - get this one! it has features that were, until this model, unheard of in a sub $1k unit.
I for one, am extremely pleased with this projector!

Ultimate Experience!
on November 15, 2017
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN

I was a bit skeptical about this product, because all wireless/bluetooth speakers I have used in the past left a WHOLE LOT to be desired. Both in features and sound quality.
So going in, I wasn't expecting a whole lot.. I just went in wanting a wifi/bluetooth/battery operated speaker for the portability of it all.
While I certainly got that (12+ hours of playtime on battery!), I was blown away by everything else.
The sound quality to me is mind blowing.I have an audiophile setup in my office, and i literally found myself looking at the control unit for said setup, because I was almost positive that the sound was coming from those speakers. It wasn't! It was all the Ultimate Ears Blast the whole time! The speaker does a good job with highs and lows. Even at the highest volume (10, on the 10 step volume) there was absolutely no discernible distortion.
The unit comes with a standard usb micro cable and power adapter. Charging times seemed pretty quick to go from half to full (much less than an hour - maybe 30-45 minutes tops). You can opt in for the wireless charger here on amazon for under 40 as well, if that's a must have for you.. Personally, I just flip the speaker upside down while charging, and it remains safe and steady whilst charging.
Setup was a breeze, just follow the easy instructions in the Android and IOS app. You just basically connect it to your WiFi, and bluetooth pair your device with the speaker. You can also rename your device to something other than the default name of "blast". There are limited features for the app at the moment, but I've been told that more features and options should be rolling out soon.
Did I mention this does voice commands with Alexa built right in? WOW! You can tell Alexa to turn the music up/down, pause etc. not only that, but you are able to download other options for alexa. My favorite so far is "Alexa, start my day" which you can configure to play headlines (from many different sources) as well as weather forecasts for your area. On the goofy side, I found Jeopardy! for the speaker! Now that was cool!
So far there are a few music services (free and paid) that are supported by the UE blast. My favorite to use is Amazon Music Unlimited - not only because they offer high quality - but because the vastness of their music catalog. Don't already have a subscription the AMU? Good news, you get 3 free months!! This promo will be offered to you when setting up the speaker for the first time in-app via it's android and IOS apps.
The build quality feels very solid. All the buttons are easy to see and use. So even your most tech-unfriendly person will have this up and running in no time.
Want to take the speaker in the shower? You won't turn into a crispy critter! This thing is even waterproof! How cool is that? Taking the speaker out by the pool will no longer involve getting worried it will be splashed.
All in all, this speaker has mindblowing sound quality, fantastic features, and an on-point build.
If you are in the market for a wireless/wifi/bluetooth speaker - get this one and don't be tethered with a power-cord!
If I could give more than five stars, I would in a heartbeat! That's how awesome this product is!

Fairly decent mid-entry system
on November 11, 2017
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN
from Memphis, TN
Shopping around for a good multi-camera system, the arlo pro 2 caught my eye. It boasted all the features I was looking for, such as:
Multi cam system
Wireless*
Batteries built in (and are rechargeable)
The ability to listen and talk via the system no matter where you are!
Night vision
waterproof/outdoor proof
With those being my top "must haves" - I thought this would be the system to go with. Sure it's more expensive than single camera systems. But is it worth the price?
As for being wireless, this is true if you plan on using the system strictly indoors. However, if you want to use it outdoors, the folks at netgear/arlo appear to suggest you use it plugged in.. Seems kind of strange. There is one power adapter and cable included - but then it states one should use an "outdoor cable" when used outdoors (Not included).
A main piece of the system is its base-station which must be plugged into your internet router. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. A nice feature of the base station is its built in 100db siren which you can enable to (?) scare off a burglar or nosy neighbor.
With that bit out of the way...
I can certainly appreciate the quality of the video streams TO ME it definitely appears to be 1080, unlike other reviews that state it is hard to tell the difference between a 720 stream. The audio, however, is a bit "wonky" when coming thru the camera's speaker. The night vision feature is, again, decent. Not the best I've ever seen - but certainly not the worst. When night vision is on, there is barely any color/contrast - and the stream ALMOST looks B&W.
Yes, there are also dedicated Arlo apps on Google Play, App Store, and Amazon. They performed adequately for my use. Some may find the app lacking, but it "gets the job done" in my view (no pun intended).
One of my favorite features is its free 7day video retention. Want to back it up? you can do that too by plugging a flash drive into the base station. This is a feature that I found myself wanting on other systems - that offered no local backup, and 24-48 hour retention only (what's the point in that??).
You can also program 'zones' - which will immediately begin recording once motion is detected within. And once that occurs, you can get the system to immediately send you a mobile alert. i can definitely see this feature coming in handy when I am out of town for any length of time.
The hardware/mounts are very stable in my experience. I felt like the mounts and cameras would stay up wherever they are placed without any issues.
The WiFi connection from cameras to the base-station is sufficient IMO. The box boasts a 300ft 'line of sight" range. I found this to be true, and it would go even further depending on what objects were in the way.
The unit runs off of the 2.4Ghz band. Which is plenty fast. Though, I can see why 5Ghz wasn't used (less range due to larger "signals"). But, the option should still have been offered - as higher speed=less lag=greater performance. Some would definitely trade less range for that type of performance increase.
So is this worth the price? Yes... and No...
Yes, because it is feature packed, and a solid product. And has features and functions that other systems in this price range lack.
No, because some of the issues I pointed out above.
At the end of the day, i see myself putting this system to use on a daily basis. And most likely, you will too!

A hybrid experience
on October 22, 2017
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN
from Memphis, TN
One thing right off the bat - this product is not meant to replace a regular shaver (electric or blade). It mentions this right in the booklet. So, if you are wanting a baby smooth shave - this product is probably not for you.
If, however, you are like me and have a beard - or even just like to sport a "stubbly" look - this product definitely IS for you!
The oneblade pro is a hybrid between a regular blade and an electric trimmer.
The battery goes from empty to fully charged in about 45 mins. Though, the booklet states it takes closer to an hour. On a full charge, you get roughly an hour and a half of run time, which imo is very generous.
The only attachment you need (and the only one included, FYI) is an adjustable length guard.
The one thing that struck me right away when trimming my beard was how precise it was on the first pass - no more "variable length beard" for me! Nor does the product tug and cause irritation.
Taking the length guard off - you can use the product as a "shaver" to shave down to stubble. Again, very precise and no irritation whatsoever.
Where there is a bit of a learning curve - you must shave against the grain. Otherwise, the hairs will not properly engage in the blade. I found this to be awkward at first - but quickly got the hang of it.
Where this product truly excels, IMO, is its very precise ability to "edge" your beard (or mustache, etc). The product creates very clean lines and the unit felt good enough in my hand that I was confident that I wouldn't slip and cause a beard-astrophe.
The only minor negative I can come up with is that the blade itself is disposable. You must replace it every 3 to 4 months. This however is a small process to pay to ensure a quality shaving experience.
Definitely a quality product - and one that will be in my daily routine from now on.

What is this soft foam cube with seemingly alien hieroglyphics? Why, it is your personal porthole into a fascinating vr and ar world. If you have a smartphone, you are good to go.
Simply download a merge app (and there are many to choose from) in your app store and that's all she wrote. I tried the "dig" app which is like mine craft. Before long you'll be building neat structures atop your merge cube in the augmented reality world. Use the merge goggles, and you can do it in a truly immersive virtual reality world (see my review for the goggles). You can interact with the cube (in real time) by picking it up, turning it, etc - and the world changes as you do. If you are going to get the goggles, I highly recommend that you get the cube also. But if you just want to mess around in the ar world, you can do so effortlessly with just the cube itself.

Beyond expectations
on October 6, 2017
Posted by: MemphisTechieRN
from Memphis, TN
As this is my first foray into the vr world, I didn't really know what to expect with the merge goggles. Would it be a fully immersive experience? Would it fit my large phone, let alone my giant head?
First, my main phone is an LG V20. Sadly, this phone is too big to insert into the device. But luckily (!!!) I still have my LG G5 and that phone fits like a glove. Now it will be used as a dedicated device with the merge.
Secondly, my biggest fear is that my giant head would preclude me from using the unit, a fear that grew exponentially when I saw "for ages ten and up" on the (stunning) product packaging. However, that fear was alleviated once I removed the goggles from the packaging. If it can fit my head (and it does) it can fit 99.9% of the population.
The goggles themselves are very comfortable. The packaging boasts "marshmallow softness" and it truly is. I experienced no strain or pressure when using it. You can adjust the goggles focus, and it is even possible to wear your glasses with the device. As for the apps, there are quite a few that you simply just install from your device's app store. I first messed around with Googles street view, and it really impressed me. There are some other merge apps that I also utilized the cube accessory with (see cube review) and it was a seamless experience. As again, this being my first experience with vr, I am impressed. And the merge vr goggles have made the experience that much more impressive (and!) comfortable.

Great for older-ish parent(s)!

My mother takes great pride in keeping her townhouse clean and spiffy. Prior to this vacuum, she had an older bag type model which, even for me was heavy and hard to maneuver. So I thought, who would appreciate this vacuum more than her? After helping her get it out of the box and setup (easy! She could have done it, but I wanted to be the helpful son a little but!) she was amazed by how light the unit was. Upon turning it on, she could tell instantly that it was much more powerful than the old one. Having two cats in her home, she went around looking for cathair to pick up, and she was pleased by how this picked it up on the first pass. The other big item she wanted me to mention was how easy it was to maneuver the shark! She was zooming up and down the hallways and rounding corners like she was a race-car driver! The true hepa filtration ensures that all the nasties don't come shooting back out and makes the air cleaner (peace of mind on my part). Currently she has the attachments connected, vacuuming the furniture! Needless to say, she is very pleased. That makes two of us! I'm glad that she can now perform her cleaning tasks easier than before! I, and she, definitely recommend this shark vacuum to anyone! Just get it!

It's a monster! The sound quality this bookshelf sized system delivers, that is! Any new audio system gets tested with Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" in my household. And this system is very capable in delivering premium audio quality. The fact that you can also stream from bluetooth devices is also a plus. Playing/recording to USB sticks is new to me (well, recording to one) but this unit makes it a breeze. Even a cassette deck is included if you want to make a good ol' fashioned "mix tape". This unit is DEFINITELY worth the price it is currently going for. If you are in the market for a bookshelf system, with great sound - tons of features, at a reasonable price - this one is for you! DO IT!

I have Apple tv 4th Gen which is NOT a 4K device. I just bought this tv which replaced my old HDTV. I do not see any difference in picture quality (from my old tv as compared with this Sharp 4K tv). Is this because of the fact my apple tv is not 4K?

Yes.
You can't get 4k resolution from devices that don't output 4k.
So of course, the quality will be the same as your old tv - unless you get a device that outputs in 4k.

Do NOT buy this SHARP I got one in Nov and it glitched a lot one day my 5 year old was watching and it froze She taped the screen with the remote and the screen cracked Sharp doesn't make replacement screens Best buy protection won't cover it i'm screwed

Tap + 5yr old = threw remote at the screen like an MLB player? Perhaps.
Pretty sure best buy protection wouldn't cover intentional damage like this for any item. To say this is an issue with the Sharp brand is quite the stretch.

If I attach an external CD Drive, can I copy/burn something onto a disk? Thanks.

Yes, if it can be installed on another windows 10 device, it can be installed here. You will need to get a USB-A to USB-C adapter as there are no "regular" usb ports. Just usb-c.

You only get 128GB SSD and 4GB of Memory for this price? Fail.

Storage is expandable. This tablet is a fail? Far from it. I'm enjoying mine. Sadly it is already back-ordered on most sites. So perhaps this is just a case of sour-grapes on your part, or you are a MaC fan, OR you just couldn't afford this and had nothing positive to contribute. For everyone else, this tablet is AWESOME. It has handled everything I've thrown at it within reason. Obviously it's not meant to play games in full frame rate - but everything else - YEP!
