The Robots Keep Getting Smarter
on September 11, 2019
Posted by: AlanD963
from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
It seems each year, the new Robot Vacuums keep learning new tricks and clean better.
This latest Shark IQ Robot is a perfect example. It makes me very happy I waited until now to get one.
Older robots were more hit and miss. They just kind of rambled around the floor, missing some spots. I was impressed with this IQ Robot. It traveled in perfect straight lines, it overlapped slightly so that it cleaned everything. It also seemed smarter than others, other brands if they encountered chairs around a table, they seemed to ‘give up.’ The IQ found a way to get between the chairs and cleaned under the table. Also the IQ features a self cleaning brush roller. If your pet has long hair, the IQ ‘untangles’ it before it can twist and clog up the roller. I’ve only used the machine for a few days so I couldn’t test that feature yet, but the idea that I won’t have to spend time with a scissors and an upside-down robot trying to clean it up is very appealing.
The ‘mapping’ feature on your smartphone is found on newer robots and it’s included here. The Sharkclean App connects via WIFI to the cleaner, after a few passes it draws a map of your floors, allowing you to have the robot clean the whole floor, or just certain rooms if you like. Also, it comes with a magnetic plastic strip roll that you can cut and put on the floor to tell the robot “No no, don’t come in here.” Also if for some reason the robot senses it’s battery is near empty, it automatically heads back to the base for a full charge before it sets out again to finish the job.
The really new feature of this model is the bagless ‘self emptying’ base. When the robot is finished and returns to the base, you can hear the base turn on and actually empty the dirt out of the robot, giving you a fresh empty device to start cleaning next time, automatically. Shark says you’d only have to empty the base about every 30 days, I would guess depending on how many passes the robot makes. Since owners of other robots say emptying the unit after almost every cleaning is a major fault of the device, What’s not to like about not needing to worry about that!
I DID notice that the IQ Robot was a little louder than my neighbor’s older unit. I think that’s probably because the suction on the IQ is stronger than the others. With more suction and cleaning power, you get more noise. Not much you can do about that. I think it’s totally worth it with extra cleaning power.

Grill 365 Days a Year
on August 29, 2019

from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
Living in Chicago, ‘grilling season’ isn’t all that long, but with the Ninja indoor grill, that problem is over. You can have the same taste as from an outdoor grill, whatever the weather. Plus the ‘air fryer’ feature is amazing as well.
The first night we grilled chicken breast filets. Following the recipe in the included book we popped the grill grate into the unit, brushed a little canola oil on the filets, placed them on the grill after preheating. Then grilling for a little less than 20 minutes, flipping over once. They came out perfectly with a slightly crispy grilled coating and moist inside.
Hamburgers the second night. Just placed the burgers on the grill for about 5 minutes, no flipping needed as per the recipe. Perfect again.
The third night I tried the air fryer. I love fried clams and the texture was never right in the past when cooking them in the toaster oven. We put the crisper basket in the unit, preheated, then dropped in the frozen clams and cooked for half the time as suggested on the box, just nine minutes. Wow, they tasted like the clams I used to get at Howard Johnson’s! (older readers will remember this, lol)
I can’t wait to try out other recipes in the book and maybe experiment a little as well.
Even though there wasn’t much smoke at all from the unit, the only negative I could report is there is SOME (even using canola oil instead of vegetable oil as specified). At first, we had placed the unit on the counter directly under the upper cabinets and realized maybe we could find a better location for the grill, as the little smoke that was there, was seeping up under them. Outside of this, everything was great including clean up, virtually all the parts (except the unit itself, of course) can be placed in the dishwasher. A special brush is included if you want to wash the parts in the sink.
It’ll be especially fun this winter enjoying grilled food inside with the snow blowing outside and the temperature around zero. True indoor grilling is here at last.

Old School, But Fun!
on August 12, 2019

from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
It’s amazing to think of an mp3 player like this as “old school.” But with more and more people listening to streaming as their music choice, I guess it is, but if you have some music in your library on MP3’s or other music files, this inexpensive device is certainly worth buying.
First of all, it’s feather light and TINY, it’s smaller than my thumb and clips easily on your clothing or a backpack. In fact, not losing it might be a problem, but it’s powerful. This 16 GB model will hold 4000 of your favorite songs. You can buy a bigger version, but seriously, do you have more than that many songs you’d want to take with you?
Loading it is easy, just connect to your computer and drag and drop your music files into the device. After loading your songs, you can locate them on the little color screen by artist or title, create playlists or just have the “Shuffle” feature surprise you with what song will pop up next.
It comes with a built in FM radio, which uses your headphones as an antenna. Here’s a hint I discovered if you buy this player. Pushing the forward and backward buttons tunes the radio up and down. It took FOREVER to tune up the dial. Upon messing around with the player, I discovered that if you hold either button for three seconds and then push it again quickly the radio will quickly scan up or down until it finds the next station. (This is not mentioned in any instruction manual.) If you like the station you can add it to your favorites.
The player also has a voice recorder mode and a stopwatch (you can use it to record laps). Also a timer in case you want to fall asleep to music (not sure that’s a good idea with a cord around your neck though!)
On the negative side, this player does not offer Bluetooth. It wasn’t that much of a problem because my premium Bluetooth headphones from Bose and JBL also contain a cord which fits right into this Sandisk player. The music sounds great with premium headphones.
Bottom line, for under 40 bucks this player is great. Load your music on it and you can listen and save your phone battery for other uses.

Simply AMAZING
on July 21, 2019
Posted by: AlanD963
from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
I can honestly say I was amazed when I first put in these earbuds and started listening to my music. The sound was stunning. It was as if I was wearing top of the line over-the-ear headphones with full tight bass. I have certain recordings I use to ‘demo’ headsets and the WF-1000XM3 came through with flying colors.
Pairing was effortless, just make sure they’re fully charged and then remove from the case. That’s it, they connected right to my phone. From this point on when I removed them from the case they automatically turn on. Take them out of your ears and they turn off after about 5 minutes. Adding the Sony Connect app gave total control of many of the earbud’s features, including a very effective equalizer.
There are so many features to talk about. You put these in your ears and then twist slightly. They lock in and resist falling. I’ve never seen this feature in earbuds before.
You turn on noise cancelling either by a tap on the left bud or a control in the Sony connect app. The noise cancelling is phenomenal, rivaling NC by Bose or anyone else. Sony calls the NC processor their QN1e. All I know is it works and works well, background noise from my air conditioning compressor disappeared. I didn’t think it was running.
A suggestion though, try several of the different earbud tips supplied with the unit to find the ones which fit you best. At first I thought the NC filter was just “good” then when I trying a different pair it totally locked out ambient noise from my surroundings. You don’t think to try this because we’re all used to “around the ear” NC headphones which wouldn’t require experimentation like this.
One fun feature, if you’re listening to your music with the noise cancelling on, you don’t have to remove an earbud if you want to chat with someone. For example, if the flight attendant wants your drink order. By just putting your hand over your left ear, the NC turns off and the music volume lowers, place your order, remove your hand and the system goes back to normal!
Answering the phone was easy. I just tapped the left earbud twice. I heard my caller perfectly, and she indicated that I sounded a little like I was on a speakerphone, however my voice was still very clear. This was better than I’ve found with other earbud headsets.
Battery life is excellent for earbuds. You get about six hours of battery life. If you need a recharge, 10 minutes in the charger case will give you 90 minutes more of playback time.
It’s here that you see a disadvantage of earbuds compared with full size headphones which can give 3 times the battery life without a recharge, however I’ve found no other earbuds which offers a charge this long.
I’m really looking forward to my next vacation with these. Finally, I’ve found earbuds with the same sound quality and noise cancelling ability as full size headphones. Previously, packing those big headphones in my backpack, especially when in their case took up much real estate. These I can keep in my pocket and hardly notice that they are in there. That makes these totally worth the price. I think you’ll be as in love with these ear buds as I am.

Works well with limitations
on June 28, 2019

I really wanted to like this Hoover wet/dry vacuum cleaner. It has so many positive features. Not needing to worry about a power outlet is one. I like that the “ONEPWR” battery is used for a whole line of Hoover vacuums. It’s also attractive and very solidly built. It’s easy to open and empty the dirt tank (you remove the filter when using the cleaner with liquids). The cleaner snaps back together with very solid “clicks.” The attachments snap on to the case so they’re always with you.
To me the biggest negative is the length of the cleaner’s hose. It extends to only about 2 feet, so to use it to clean up dirt or spills on the floor, you’d have to get down on your hands and knees.
In normal use you’d have to carry the cleaner with one hand and vacuum with the other. The cleaner weighs 10 pounds with the battery installed, so my hand and arm got tired rather quickly. Finally, the battery power lasted less than 7 minutes before it started to run down, and then takes well over an hour to fully charge back again, so your cleaning chore would have to be completed quickly.
Bottom line, the cleaner is well built as I said, if it had wheels and a much longer hose, I think it would be more useful.

Good Workout Earbuds
on June 21, 2019
Posted by: AlanD963
from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
These totally wireless earbuds are very good for your workouts. For one thing, they are advertised as sweatproof and dirt resistant, so they should stand up well to what you give them, even if you run into an unexpected rain shower, and also I love the earhook design. I found they stayed totally locked on my ears during my session, which is not always the case with other totally in-ear buds. I found the gel tips which came on each bud were very comfortable, but if you don’t, there are several different sizes packed in the box which you can try.
They were extremely easy to pair to my phone, which is not always the case with the competition. Not only that, but after the first time, every time I removed the buds from their case they’d connect immediately. I didn’t have to fool with any buttons to hear my music. And speaking of that case, it holds the buds and keeps them charged, up to 34 hours when put back in the case, and six hours while wearing them. Speaking of the case, I love the built-in tiny charging cable which is actually a part of the case. You’ll never have to run around looking in drawers to find the proper cable again.
OK, about how the earbuds sound. For the price and using them as ‘workout’ buds, I think they sound fine. There are three built-in EQ settings for you to try, although none of them gave me the “bass punch” I was looking for. I honestly don’t think you’d want to use them to sit at home and listen to your favorite music while sitting in an easy chair. There are much better choices for that with better sound, but of course, they would cost much more also. But to use as the ‘soundtrack’ to your workout, I think these durable phones are perfect.

Perfect for Hardwood Floors
on May 18, 2019
Posted by: AlanD963
from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
Hardwood floors are becoming more and more prevalent these days. My wife recently had most of the carpet in our house pulled out and replaced with hardwood. This cleaner was perfect for our new floors.
The “fluffy” roller tool REALLY works amazingly well. With our older cleaners, if our dog had spilled some dry food around, you had to lift up the vacuum and place it down on top of the spill. Otherwise you just pushed it around the floor. Here, the roller just rolls everything in its path into the cleaner. I noticed you needed to make far fewer passes on the floor to pick everything up. Also the fluffy roller also ‘dusts’ the floor as it passes. That’s kind of an extra bonus.
The docking station is very easy to use, the cleaner just snaps right in and begins charging. The docking station also holds two attachments.
I also appreciate when you empty the dust cannister on the V7, you pull up the handle and not only does the door open, emptying the cannister but the metal circular assembly pops up. In my other cleaner, that assembly remains inside the cannister and gets surrounded by dust. You had to stick your hand or a screwdriver or something up inside the cannister to try to pull the dust out that had adhered to that assembly. Also, the main filter of the V7 lifts right out and can be washed under the faucet. The 2nd HEPA filter also can be cleaned the same way. The instructions just urge you to make sure the filters are dry before you put them back in.
Any negatives? There always are, but only a couple I can think of. The V7 does not have any LED lights to illuminate your floor as most of the other newer cleaners have now. Also, the power lever doesn’t have a “remain on” position. You must hold it in as you clean, as soon as you let go, the motor stops. I guess this is to save battery power. Both very minor.
Bottom line, if you have lots of bare floors or hardwood in your home, I cannot see how you wouldn’t LOVE this vacuum cleaner.

My New Favorite Headphones
on April 24, 2019
Posted by: AlanD963
from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
Jabra has entered the world of premium noise-cancelling over the ear headphones in a big way, comparing very well with other phones in its class like the Bose QC 35’s.
I would suggest downloading the Jabra app on your smartphone before opening the really nice case. The operation of these headphones requires a learning curve, the details are explained fully in the app. There’s no on/off switch for example. When removing the phones and placing them on my head a voice immediately started speaking to me. Placing the ear cups in the listening position automatically turns them on. Placing the cups flat for storage turns them off. Bluetooth pairing was easy.
The headphones contain EIGHT microphones, four of which is for something Jabra calls SmartSound. They pick up the sound around you to filter out unwanted noise, changing the noise cancellation as conditions around you change. You can choose the noise cancelling effect depending upon your surroundings. The other four microphones are for your voice. The system seems to work well. When talking on the phone, my listener said that my voice sounded much more natural than when using any other headphones, almost like I was talking directly into the phone itself. Also answering the phone was a pleasure. No buttons to hit, you just say “Answer!” The music stops and you’re on the phone. The same for talking to your digital assistant. I asked, “Hey Google, what’s the temperature outside?” the music stopped, she told me and the music continued, no buttons to press either.
I also liked the way I could tailor the music to my liking with the equalizer on the app, using one of the preset settings or I could adjust the different frequencies myself. That always irritated me about the Bose headphones, their app had no equalizer. A Bose rep told me once that the company didn’t trust the user to change the music settings. I’m glad that Jabra had enough confidence in me to allow me to do it, lol
The Elite 85h did feel a little heavier on my head than did the Bose. They did feel very comfortable however, just something I noticed.
Overall, I loved these headphones, both from the build quality and the innovation and features Jabra brings to this class of quality headsets.

You'll Want to Have a Party
on April 8, 2019
Posted by: AlanD963
from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
This new solidly built speaker from Sony is designed from the ground up for outdoor parties. Unfold the top panel which swings open to become a spill resistant table which extends the two stereo tweeters and unveils four cup or beer bottle holders!
The speaker actually has two different sound fields. One with the top panel opened and the other closed. If you’re checking out this speaker in the store, listen to it both ways. With the top panel open, the sound enveloped my whole deck outside. Closed it’s better for a smaller room inside.
There are plenty of ways to listen to your music. The built in FM tuner worked great, using Bluetooth it was easy to connect to my smartphone, The USB port will handle a flash drive full of MP3’s, or you can use the ‘old school’ RCA jacks for connecting a TV, DVD player, etc.
At full volume the party speaker is loud. There’s a hole on the bottom so you can mount it on a tripod. It’s also a karaoke speaker. There’s a microphone jack with mic echo in case you want to pretend you’re entertaining a stadium full of people. The microphone is not included. I plugged one in and the sound was loud and clear with none of the usual feedback from a device like this. There’s three levels of echo you can play with. And it’s great to announce to your guests when the hot dogs are ready.
It’s not required but a good idea to install the free Sony “Music Center” app on your smartphone. I used it to set the sound equalization to my taste. There are seven settings available, or you can custom the EQ yourself. The Sony app will also regulate the volume, change the station on the radio, etc. if you’re far away from the device.
My only disappointment with the speaker is that I did not hear a major difference when the Mega bass was turned on. Not that the sound wasn’t great, but I would have expected a bigger change when that circuit was engaged.
On a full charge the speaker will entertain for 13 hours. In other words, it will keep going long after your beer runs out. Happy entertaining.

Makes Listening to Vinyl Easy
on April 3, 2019
Posted by: AlanD963
from ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
I was a radio DJ in the 60’s and have about 1200 vinyl records at home so I know quite a bit about turntables. This Sony PS- LX310BT is a winner.
It’s simple and elegant. You can find much more expensive and elaborate turntables, with weights hanging off the tone arm and adjustments of all kinds. This has none of that. There are only two adjustments. Your record speed, 45 or 33 rpm, and your record size, 12” or 7”. That IT, and the sound is every bit as good as the others.
The automatic tonearm is a great feature. You push START and the arm moves gently to the start of the record and then when it’s over the tonearm goes back to the arm rest and the turntable stops; you don’t have to stop what you’re doing, lifting up the tone arm manually. If you want to play a certain track on an album, you can push the “up/down” button, hover the needle over the track you want, and then push the button again and the needle gently drops down on your track.
I have a pair of Bluetooth speakers in my den and was curious as how difficult it would be to pair to the turntable. I’d say it took about 5 seconds. I pushed the Bluetooth button, the LED turns blue and almost instantly the pairing was complete. The sound of Beatles Abbey Road filled my speakers. You of course can also pair the turntable directly to a pair of quality Bluetooth headphones and listen in private. That is a cool idea. You can connect this device to an amp the old fashioned way also. It connects “phono” level or “line level” and there’s a three position gain switch to match your amp perfectly.
I think you’ll love this turntable. Just be VERY careful when unpackaging and assembling. There’s all kinds of sticky packing tape around almost every part. When you take the platter out of the box there’s some red tape stuck to it and it’s very easy to think it’s just there for packaging. It turns out it’s attached to a very thin drive belt and it would be very easy to toss it thinking it’s there for packaging. You need to loop this belt around the drive motor when dropping the platter onto the turntable assembly itself.
Overall, I give the turntable a full five stars. You’ll love it if like me, you’ve listened to vinyl for years, or if you are just getting started.

what is expected battery life

If you mean how long will the battery operate before needing a recharge, it's supposed to be about a month
If you mean how long will the battery actually last over time, Google is not saying.

YES, if you have the Aware subscription this camera will be automatically added to it at no charge.

Listen and speak through the camera right from the Google Home app. Check in anytime with 24/7 live view.* If you miss a notification, you can always go back and see what happened with 3 hours of free event video history.* And it’s easy to install yourself – no outlet or wires required. Nest Camera Battery requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – it’s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site. *** Stand and cable sold separately

Will the new 'nest' camera show up in the Nest app, or will I have to use two apps (Google home) if I have old Nest cameras?

This camera will ONLY work with the Google "Home" app and will NOT appear on your Nest app.
Google says that you can see all of your cameras on that "Home" app, which is true, but since this app is not available for a PC, you can NOT see this new camera on a computer.

Do the video feeds show up on home.nest.com for the new cameras?

No, for some reason this camera does NOT work with either the Nest app or home.nest.com. You can NOT see the output of the camera on your computer.

Previous reviewers are saying it's not compatible with the Nest App that my current doorbell and outdoor wired camera is on. Is this true? Can I integrate this camera with my Nest App and other cameras?

Unfortunately this camera is NOT compatible with the google Nest app which to me is a huge disappointment.
You have to use the Google "Home" app which does not work with a PC. So you can't even see the camera's output on a PC, which you obviously can with their other cameras.

How long does it take to charge one of these cameras? I would use it primarily overnight so during the day we would charge it whenever the battery is running low. Speaking of low battery, will the app display battery life remaining?

They claim that under normal use the battery should last about a month. Charging from zero to full should take about 5 hours.
And YES, the battery 'meter' is very large and clearly seen in the Google Home App.

No it does NOT!

And I hate that. You can only see this camera on their "Home" app,
This means you can't see the camera on a PC, only on a phone, or tablet, or Google Home device.

I already have a Nest aware subscription. Will these cameras be able to be added to my account?

Yes! The good news about the "Aware" subscription is that it will work with ALL your cameras.
Each time you add a camera, it makes the cost of your subscription per camera go down.
