Good, but Missing some Well Loved Features
on November 15, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
The UE Megablast is the newest arrival to the UE lineup to offer fantastically crisp and clear audio with strong bass response, with the new addition being the Amazon Alexa voice assistant. With a sleek cylindrical design, waterproofing that allows the speaker to be submersible, and omnidirectional speaker output, the UE Megablast aims to be the only speaker that you need in the home, at the pool, at the party, and everywhere in between.
What’s In the Box?
-A box with a lot of funky and groovy art (you’ll know what I mean when you slide off the tame looking cover)
-UE Megablast speaker
-Quick Start Guide
-Micro USB cable
-USB Charger
Appearance and Build Quality: The all cylindrical design looks very similar to an oversize beer can with a rugged, rubberized exterior shell to handle all the scrapes, bruising, and drops that will occur over its lifetime. The speaker is covered in a hard, fabric-like grill to allow the audio to pass through the two 25mm tweeters, two 55mm drivers, and two 85mm x 50mm passive radiators, all the while keeping dust, moisture, and water from seeping into the interior. On the bottom of the speaker is a circular rubber cover protecting the micro usb port for charging. There is also a removable D-ring underneath the speaker. I assume this D-ring is for hanging the speaker. Up top is the power button and another much smaller button to enable Bluetooth pairing. The very oversized +/- buttons are located along the sides of the cylinder. The button labels for + and – are huge, you’d have to be blind not to notice them. And maybe it is just me, but they do have the visual appearance of resembling a religious cross.
Features:
+Rugged Design – Take the speaker anywhere indoors and outdoors, but of course don’t subject it to extreme heat or cold.
+Omnidirectional sound
+Up to 16 hrs battery life – more than enough for a full day of partying assuming you get 8 hrs of sleep to round out a 24 hr day. It will take up to 3 hrs to recharge a fully discharged battery.
+IP67 rating – This means this speaker goes beyond simply being cowardly splash proof, but boldly insists on being dunked under water in approximately 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. I was too afraid to put this to the test, since I did not want to ruin a $300 speaker. I’ll take UE at their word.
+Strong Bluetooth connection. I didn’t experience any Bluetooth stuttering or disconnections. In fact, UE boasts that the Bluetooth range is up to 150 feet.
+Wifi music streaming from IHeartRadio, Amazon Prime Music, and TuneIn Radio through Amazon Alexa. Pandora and Deezer are purportedly to be included in the future.
+Integrated Amazon Alexa voice assistant. This may or may not be important to you depending on whether or not you are already subscribed to one of the two dominant voice assistant ecosystems (Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant) presently available in the market.
Features that are Missing:
Equally important to the features (aka “the selling points”) are the features that are missing in the UE Megablast which are offered by some of the competitors in the portable Bluetooth speaker market.
-No NFC connection.
-No 3.5mm audio jack. I am disappointed, but not surprised. Would have been great if UE included a 3.5mm jack since wired audio quality is still better than Bluetooth transmission audio quality.
-You cannot connect two or more UE Megablasts together or to other speakers in the UE lineup via Bluetooth in a party mode to have multiple speakers playing the same music simultaneously. Not sure why UE took this feature off the table. Just imagine how loud your party could get if you could connect them together!
Audio Quality: I was impressed by the audio output of the speakers. The omnidirectional (aka 360 degree) sound meant that there are no fading, audio dead spots as I moved about my room. The UE Megablast can get really loud to the point that your neighbors will be knocking on your door to turn it down. The mid-range representing vocals and speech is very crisp and clear. The highs are equally well represented. Bass kicks in strong without overpowering the high and midrange frequencies. This means that when you’re listening to music with strong bass, you can still clearly hear the vocals. And if you choose to watch a movie using the UE Megablast, you can clearly hear the bass response from action sequences, but wouldn’t have to adjust equalizers to hear dialogue.

Amazon Alexa Voice Assistant: I’m not going to go too much into this. You are initially asked to connect to Amazon Alexa when you first set up the speaker through the Ultimate Ears app available through the Google Play Store or Apple App store. The microphone does a fine job of picking up audio across my room and I’m able to ask Alexa questions and give it commands. Alexa will only work if the speaker is connected through the wifi network. It will not work on a Bluetooth only connection.
If you find yourself desiring some privacy, you have two options to turn off the microphone from listening to your conversation. First method is to open the Ultimate Ears app, tap on the microphone icon, and tap ‘off’ to disable the microphones. A tone will be emitted and a small red light will illuminate at the top of the speaker to indicate that the microphones have been turned off. The second method is to use the speaker controls. On the speaker, press the volume down ‘ – ‘ and the Bluetooth button simultaneously. You will hear a tone and see the red light at the top of the speaker. This indicates that the microphone has been turned off. To turn them back on, press the same buttons again.
Finally, one thing to take note. UE did a poor job with the location for the micro usb charging port. The port is located at the bottom base of the speaker. That means when you are charging it, you will have to place the speaker on its side horizontally, which means it has a strong chance of rolling off your table. Or you can place the speaker upside down, with the power button on the bottom. The only other alternative is to purchase the charging dock which will allow you to charge the speaker in the upright position.
Conclusion: Do I recommend the UE Megablast? Given its very good audio quality and sleek, rugged build quality, I totally believe it is a sound choice (pun intended) and should be on your short list. However, given that some of the features are noticeably missing which were found in the previous UE lineup (eg. Megaboom) at a lower price point, you will need to really ask yourself if the addition of the Alexa assistant is worth the tradeoff.

A Good Wire Free Security Camera System
on November 10, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
The Arlo Pro 2 is a very good wireless security camera system that provides excellent daytime image quality, with adequate night vision capability. I was able to set up my cameras in a few minutes following the instructions in the quick start guide. The daytime video provided by the cameras is crisp, clear, and detailed. The video quality in night vision is acceptable to good. I was concerned that the night vision quality would be poor and washed out as I had read from the arlo pro 2 community forum. However, this was not the case in my experience. The video from night vision wasn't washed or grainy. I set the camera to view my backyard which has no outdoor lighting, and the night vision video feed appeared fine. The quality of the night vision is on par with my original arlo pro camera which I also own.
I also like that you can mix the original arlo pro cameras and the arlo pro 2 cameras using the original base station. This means that for those who already own the arlo pro system, you simply need to purchase the additional arlo pro 2 cameras without needing to purchase a totally new arlo pro 2 base station.
The arlo pro 2 wireless camera has a lot of features that you can control. There are too many to list here, but here are some of the ones I found useful. You can set a schedule for the cameras to be automatically activated, set duration for recording from 10 seconds to 300 seconds, live view the video feed from the arlo app or from your user account on the arlo netgear web page, communicate with two way audio, record up to one week's worth of video without a contract or monthly fee, and receive notifications directly to your phone whenever motion or sound triggers the camera video recording.
However, the arlo pro 2 camera isn't perfect. There are a few seconds of delay from the video and audio recording. Sometimes the camera loses connection with the base station and is shown as being offline. It'll take a few tries to get it back online. I was also disappointed that 24/7 continuous video recording (CVR) is only offered on a subscription basis for a fee. Netgear doesn't allow us to hook up a hard drive to the base station to save the CVR feed. What a pity.
All in all, I think the arlo pro 2 cameras are very good, but are not enough of an upgrade from the original arlo pro camera. Sure they are 1080p, but the 720p arlo pro is also of very good video quality with sufficient detail captured at a lower price point. However, if you need to have the best detail in the video quality, then I say go for it!

Look No Further, These Are the Best Headphones!
on October 18, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
Noise Cancellation
Let's get right to the noise cancellation. The Sony WH-1000XM2 has the best noise cancellation in its class. The noise cancellation surpasses that of its closest competitor, the one that rhymes with nose. I know because I own a pair of the latest generation of those headphones as well. Noise cancellation seems to be stronger on the Sony 1000XM2. Moreover, the Sony headphone app allows you to manually adjust the amount of noise cancellation from 0 (full noise cancellation) to 20 (allows all ambient noise in). Or, if you'd rather let the app automatically adjust the noise cancellation, you can do that too by switching on the Adaptive Sound Control feature which analyzes your movements and balances the noise cancellation depending on your activity and environment. And if that isn't enough, Sony's Personal Noise Canceling Optimizer customizes the noise cancellation based on an analysis of how the headphones rest on your head. It will maximize the noise cancellation by detecting if you are wearing glasses, wearing earrrings, etc. Flying on an airplane? Well, the headphones will measure the atmospheric pressure and adjust the noise cancellation. All these noise cancellation features are pretty phenomenal.
Sound Quality
What about sound quality? Sound quality is top notch as well. Audio is crisp, vocals are clear and detailed, and the bass punches when it needs to. It almost sounds like you're listening to the music live, right in front of you, your own personal concert. If you are not pleased with the sound, the Sony app has both preset and user adjustable/customizable equalizers to suit your listening pleasure. More brands need to follow Sony's lead and include equalizers with their apps.
Touch Controls
The right ear cup is fully controlled by touch controls, no buttons at all. Cup your hand over the right earphone, the volume drops and allows ambient noise in to enable conversations. Swipe up and down on the ear cup to control the volume. Swipe forwards and backwards to skip songs on a playlist. Tap twice to pause/play or take a call. Finally, a single long press will activate the voice assistant on your phone.
Build Quality and Comfort
Fit and finish on the headphones are excellent. The metal headband feels strong and sturdy. Hinges move freely and smoothly. All pieces have tight tolerances and no wobble. They look truly professional in quality.
I wear eyeglasses and the earpads feel comfortable over my glasses. No pinching or fatigue. I'm able to wear the headphones for hours with glasses on. Only complaint is that my ears will get warm, but that's the case for all over the ear headphones.
Battery Life
No complaints here. The battery is rated for 30 hrs on a single charge. If you're in a rush, a single 10 minute charge will get you up to 70 minutes of audio playback.
Accessories
I believe that the accessories a company provides defines how much it cares about the customer's experience. Sony did right by including a premium hard cover carrying case, audio cable, micro-usb charging cable, and airplane plug adapter.
Summary
The latest iteration of the Sony noise cancelling 1000XM2 leaves the competition in the dust. You can read countless reviews and the general consensus is that these headphones are class leading. From noise cancellation to audio quality, to an app that is really worth using, and to unique touch controls, there is no reason why you wouldn't want to hand over your hard earned money for these cans. They are worth it!

The Ultimate Chopper!
on October 17, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
I didn't expect much from the Philips Multi Chopper, thinking it was simply an ordinary vegetable chopper, and that it wouldn't do any better than using a knife and chopping board, but boy was I proven wrong. This one kitchen appliance truly impressed me! It turned chopping vegetables into fine pieces from what was once considered a time consuming event into a simple few seconds of effortless wonder.
The first thing I tried chopping was a carrot. It was the hardest vegetable in my kitchen at the time I was testing the chopper. I cut the carrot into smaller pieces and placed them into the purple colored chopping basket with the “chopdrop” blade inserted. Then I plugged in the power to the black colored motor unit and pressed it on top of the container. The chopper instantaneously went to work and cut the carrot into fine pieces in a matter of seconds. The bits were perfectly sized as the basket has holes which allow the chopped bits to fall through when they reach a certain size. This would have taken me a very long time to accomplish with a traditional knife and cutting board and I wouldn't have been able to cut it as fine as the Philips Multi Chopper did.
Next, I wanted to see what the second blade could do. Philips calls this blade the “regular” chopper blade. Well, let me tell you this is no regular blade. I thought the carrot was finely chopped using the chopdrop blade. The regular blade cut the pieces into even finer bits. Any finer would be pulverized carrot powder.
I had a lot of fun just chopping up nuts, dicing onions without shedding tears (except tears of joy!), and even grinding down meats. It really does chop all sorts of vegetables, fruits, nuts, cheeses, and meats. Philips even includes a small recipe booklet that shows you how to prepare salsa, guacamole, hummus, pesto, and mint chutney as starter recipes.
Clean up is a breeze. Wipe down the motor unit. Wash the container, basket, and blades in your dishwasher or simply hand wash with some soap and water. Be careful though as the blades are sharp.
The Philips Multi Chopper belongs to the Philips Viva Collection of kitchen appliances. I have never heard of this line before, but if they are anything like the quality and ease of use like the Multi Chopper, I would definitely start paying attention to what else they have to offer.
In summary, I think that if you spend a lot of time in your kitchen chopping food into small pieces, this Philips Multi Chopper will make your job much easier and faster than you could possibly imagine. I highly recommend it. Easily a 5 star product.

A Decent Monitor that Won't Break the Bank
on October 13, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
The Acer S271HL Gbidx monitor is a very good, no frills value oriented flat panel LCD monitor. With a 27” 1920x1080 full HD 16:9 wide screen and a very thin bezel frame, it is both stylish and functional. Colors are rendered accurately right out of the box and the display has a large 178 degree viewing angle. The monitor can be connected via VGA, DVI, or HDMI. There is also a 3.5mm jack to connect external speakers.
One feature I like on the monitor is that it has an easy to navigate On Screen Display (OSD) control panel. Adjustments to brightness and contrast were simple to locate and adjust on the OSD. Another thing that is good is that it has a VESA mounting interface to allow you to mount the monitor on stands or wall mounts. If you choose not to VESA mount, then you can support the monitor with the included oval base which is very compact and takes up very little desktop real estate. The base measures 9 inches in width and a little under 7 inches in depth.
One of my biggest gripes about this monitor is that Acer short changed a very good monitor with a stand that has nearly zero adjustment. It can barely be tilted, maybe only a few degrees of motion. According to the specs, the tilt angle can be adjusted from -5 degrees to +15 degrees. I was afraid to tilt it much because it felt like the hinge point connection was ready to snap. The connection felt weak even when the connecting screws were tightened down. Furthermore, the stand can neither pivot nor adjust vertically in height. This really limits the positioning of the monitor. Does Acer expect me to go old school and prop books underneath the stand to elevate the monitor? Thankfully, the VESA mounting interface is the saving grace. I may have to end up purchasing a separate VESA mountable stand.
So in summary, I would recommend this Acer monitor because it offers good value, with good brightness (300 nits), respectable color reproduction, and a thin bezel. I considered both a 23” monitor versus 27”, and I was glad I got the 27” monitor because it allows me to easily view multiple windows side-by-side, and I can also view more columns on spreadsheets. In the case of monitors, bigger is better provided you have the desktop space for a larger monitor. In the end, I had to deduct a star for the lack of adjustment to the stand as I described above. Other than that, I think it is a good 27” monitor that should be on the shortlist for consideration.

Outstanding & Well Worth the Money!
on October 1, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
The Epson Home Cinema 2150 is setting the benchmark for home cinema projectors. Setup is amazingly simple and intuitive. Connect the power supply, connect the host device (via HDMI, VGA, MHL, or Miracast), turn on the projector, slide the lens cover out of the way, position the projection image so the image is square on the projection screen, and you're ready to see your movie come to life as if you are at the theater. The aforementioned set up was quick; it took me less than 10 minutes.
I may never go back to watching movies and programming using my television anymore after using the Epson 2150. It was a visual delight to see such image clarity at full HD 1080p on such a large projection. The images are vivid and detailed, colors are accurately reproduced, and bright even in ECO mode. I did not have to perform any color calibration; the Epson 2150 default settings are very good right of the box. The 10W mono speaker is surprisingly decent. I thought it was going to sound tinny, but it did not. However, for best audio results, I would recommend an external speaker set up. There is a 3.5mm output jack at the back of the projector to connect audio devices.
My smartphone has Miracast, and it was just awesome to be able to mirror the smartphone screen contents on a big screen projector.
I also want to point out that the Epson Home Cinema 2150 supports streaming devices such as Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV.
There is also no reason to watch a movie in the theater again! With the Epson Home Cinema 2150, I get to enjoy all that in the comfort of my home, but without any of the annoyances of being in a movie theater. I can't think of anything negative to point out about the projector other than the fact that it may make you more of a couch potato. I highly recommend the projector. It is definitely worth the money.

Powerful Steam Cleaning
on September 24, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
Stubborn stains on my kitchen and bath tile floor and dining room hardwood floor did not stand a chance against the Bissell Powerfresh Slim Steam Mop. It was a real joy to use. Setup was simply a matter of snapping together three pieces together – the mop pad foot, extension wand, and hand held pod unit. Pour in some water into the container in the hand held pod using the included pouring cup, plug in the power cord, and you're all ready to steam. Simply select the level of steaming, either high steam for difficult stains or low steam for more delicate floors, and press the trigger on the hand held pod to release the steam. The steaming action loosened up the dried stains on my floors and the cloth pad removed the stain. It does take a few passes over the stain to completely remove it. I was able to steam 1200 square foot of floors using only a few cups of water.
Pros:
+Uses only water for cleaning. No need to purchase harsh cleaning chemicals.
+Cleans multiple surfaces. The steam mop includes attachment tools to clean grout, fabric, stoves, microwaves, countertops, sinks, and more.

+The power cord is 25' long. Plenty of cord length to use the steamer without having to constanting change wall outlets.
+Easy to clean and re-usable mop pad. After steaming the floors, you simply remove the mop pad and toss it into the washing machine using warm water and non-bleach liquid detergent. Air dry and that's it.
+Comes with a wall mount to easily store the steamer.
Cons:
-The hand held pod unit is relatively heavy. Adding the water into the container in the unit naturally adds even more weight to it. During use, I found that my hands and arms felt a bit fatigued from having to hold up and move the pod unit back and forth to remove stains. There were times when I had to hold it up with both hands. I can see someone who is elderly or with arthritis having trouble using this steamer.
Tips for Use:
There is a prerequisite to using the steam mop. The steam mop is only designed to remove stains and sanitize floors and surfaces. You will first need to vacuum the floors to remove as much dust, debris, hair, and food particles as possible. Only then can you use the steam mop.
Use only distilled or demineralized water. This will help prolong the life of the steamer.
Conclusion:
Ease of use, effective stain removal, versatility of use on more than just floors, and easy clean up are the reasons to consider purchasing the Bissell Powerfresh Slim Steam Mop. I would highly recommend the steamer and am even considering purchasing more to give as gifts.

Spectacular Comfort and Noise Cancellation
on September 23, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
I own over half a dozen top rated headphones and its a real shame that I won't be using them anymore after experiencing the Bose Quiet Comfort 35 Wireless Headphones II (QC35II). These headphones along with their predecessor (QC35) are simply one of the best in class noise canceling headphones available today.
Comfort:
I start out with comfort because no headphone is worth wearing, no matter how good it sounds, if you find yourself taking it off every half hour or more to alleviate ear fatigue. I know, I've been there.
The QC35II feels as light as a feather, weighing in at 10.9 oz according to Bose's website. The headband, constructed of stainless steel and engineered composite plastic and glass filled materials, is very strong, allowing it to elastically bend and stretch. There are ample incremental adjustments to the headband length which means that it will accommodate a large range of head sizes. The oval shaped ear cups are large enough to comfortably surround your ears. The top of the headband is cushioned with Alcantara, a premium material, giving it a touch of luxury.
What all this means is that Bose's Quiet Comfort lineup has become as legendary for its comfort as it has with its active noise cancellation feature. It is not mere opinion but a matter of fact among the industry that no other manufacturer has come close to developing a set of headphones to rival the comfort that Bose offers. It continues to hold true with the QC35II. I hardly feel the weight of the headphone resting on my head. More importantly, eyeglass wearers everywhere should rejoice. I wear glasses, and there is no pinching of the frames from the ear cups against the ears. No fatigue whatsoever, and I have been wearing the QC35II for the past six hours straight. You could sleep with them on, and that's one of the reasons its so popular with air travelers – superior comfort combined with noise cancellation.
Build Quality/Style:
The exteriors of the ear cups and exterior of the headband are plastic, but appear to be well built. According to Bose, the materials are impact resistant. I'll take this at face value as I'm not willing to drop my QC35II onto a hard surface to find out. All mating surfaces are tightly fitted. The ear cup cushions themselves are soft and supple, with a very premium feel. Bose describes the material used for the ear cushions as a synthetic protein leather.
I have the black colored QC35II headphones and they look sleek and professional, but unassuming. The all black design is definitely not bold. It's rather conservative. And this is the way I like it as a professional who commutes on the train and wouldn't want a funky looking headphone with gaudy design and colors attracting attention.
Button Layout:
All controls with the exception of one button, are located on the right ear cup Buttons are intuitively tactile. The center control button is depressed slightly, allowing you to easily locate the remaining +/- buttons. I will not go into the functions of these buttons as they are standard controls for headsets.
However, the single button on the left ear cup needs a brief introduction. This button is the new feature on the QC35II that is not found on the QC35. It controls the Google Assistant on your Android phone, assuming you own an Android phone. This left button can also be programmed to control the level of ANC as discussed below.
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC):
ANC is controlled two ways. The first is via the Bose Connect app. Through the app, you can select high ANC, low ANC, or turn off ANC entirely. The second way is to re-assign the button on the left ear cup to act as the ANC selector which will allow you to cycle through the three levels of ANC.
The ANC is amazing! I tested the headphones at an indoor swimming pool with loud, screaming kids and noise from HVAC and pump machinery operating. I put the ANC at its highest level without any music from the headphones, and the drone of the HVAC and machinery disappeared. The children's voices, although they are still audible, seemed eerily distant even though the screaming children were only several feet in front of me. As good as ANC technology presently is, it has not been developed to the point that it will eliminate all external sources of noises. ANC will only work for certain lower frequencies of the sound spectrum with a repeatable pattern, such as the sound of machinery, and of course an interior cabin of a passenger airline. It won't be as effective with human voices, higher frequency sounds, and non-repeatable patterns. So all those reviews that you read about people stating that the sound of crying babies being eliminated are misguided. ANC, by itself, will not eliminate all external noises. You will need to combine the ANC with music through the headphones loud enough to drown out the sound of voices.
ANC works in both wireless and wired mode. In wired mode, however, you will not have the low ANC option. It will be either ANC on high or ANC turned off. ANC functions independently and will work whether or not music is playing. You can use the headphones solely for the ANC feature. This is useful if you simply want a quieter environment for such things as studying or concentrating.
Audio Performance:
It's always a challenge to describe audio performance. It is subjective. I liken it to purchasing clothes or shoes. It's not a one size fits all solution. You really need to try it on to find out if you like it or not. Same goes with audio. You might want to have a stronger bass response. Or you might desire clearer highs. My recommendation is for you to go to your local Best Buy and bring your favorite audio tracks and see if it is the sound you prefer.
With that said, however, I will say that Bose tried to appeal to as many of us as possible. Sound is well balanced. Bass is strong, controlled, tight, without being too overpowering. Trebles are clearly present, but are restrained from drifting too high. Vocals (mids) are clear. This is classic Bose sound signature.
In wireless listening, the audio sounded the same regardless of ANC setting (high, low, off). In wired mode however, with ANC turned off, the audio sounded a little bit flatter.
Google Assistant:
The QC35II has the Google Assistant built in to the headphones. This is a great feature to have since you can have the Google Assistant do things for you without having to take the phone out of your pocket. Pressing and holding down the button on the left ear cup, you can speak right into the headphones to access the Google Assistant to do a multitude of tasks such as making phone calls, skipping songs, adjusting volume, etc. I found that much of what you can do with the Google Assistant with your phone, you can also do with the press of the left button on the headphones. Again, a very convenient feature to have when you don't want to reach for your phone.
Battery Life:
Bose states that you can get up to 20 hours of battery life in wireless mode, and up to 40 hours when using the audio cable. It will take up to 2.5 hours to fully recharge a depleted battery.
Differences Between QC35II and QC35:
I do not own the original QC35, but had to borrow one from a friend. When I tested the headphones side by side, they appear to have the same audio quality and superior ANC levels. The only difference I could tell is that the new headphones now have the dedicated button on the left ear cup to access the Google Assistant/adjust ANC levels. Also, the airline adapter jack has been eliminated in the QC35II. That's all I can observe is different.
Other Things:
Included in the box are the headphones, headphone storage case, a 4' long audio cable, and a micro usb cable for re-charging the battery.
The Bose Connect app has various features such as adjusting ANC levels, re-assigning the left ear cup button to function either as the Google Assistant or adjusting ANC, turning on and off voice prompts, changing prompt language, auto-off timer to assign a specific duration at which point the headphones will turn off, and a user manual. The app also displays the remaining battery life and allows for volume adjustment.
In order to use the Bose Connect app you will need to allow the app to access your location. Some of you may or may not be comfortable with providing this permission.
Conclusion:
You cannot go wrong with the Bose QC35II. Luxurious comfort, world-class ANC, very good audio performance, long battery life, and now with the Google Assistant built in, are the reasons to choose these headphones. I highly recommend you give them a try. The ANC alone will leave you speechless and the headphones are so comfortable that you don't want to take them off. You may just end up walking out of the store with them (after paying of course).

Easy and Simple Cloud Storage
on September 15, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
The Western Digital My Cloud Home is the company's latest offering in personal cloud storage solutions. It's a small, compact rectangular, unassuming device measuring 6-7/8” high x 2-1/8” wide x 5-1/2” deep, with a stylish two tone color of white and metallic silver plastic exterior housing the spinning hard drive inside the unit. Yes, it is a spinning drive. It would have been nice if it were an SSD drive, but that would have cost a lot more. The unit must connect directly to a wireless router via an ethernet cable. The cable is included in the box. The cloud drive is powered by an ac power adapter.
The My Cloud Home is a feature rich personal cloud storage device. I will highlight some of the prominent features and functions (the positives) I found to be most useful as well as some of the things I did not like (the negatives).
Positives
+Easy and simple to set up. Plug in the power, connect the supplied ethernet cable from the Cloud Home to your router, proceed to mycloud.com/hello webpage to create an acccount. The next steps are simply to download the My Cloud Home app from the Google Play or Apple App store. You're done.
+Versatility: You have three options to back-up and sync data. Use the mobile app, use a web browser to access the MyCloud.com web based app, or use the desktop app.
+Automatically syncs and back up photos and videos from your phone onto the drive. Depending on the speed of your wireless connections, the My Cloud Home quickly makes a copy of the photo onto the drive. You don't have to worry about running low on storage on your phone.
+Syncs online cloud content from Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive, Google Photos, Box, and Facebook. Once I granted permission for the file transfer, all of my Google Drive documents and Google Photos pictures all magically copied over to the Western Digital Cloud Home drive.
+Files from a desktop or laptop computer are also easily synced. Using either the desktop app or the web based app, files can easily be moved by dragging and dropping in the Windows desktop environment. With the Desktop app you have the most flexibility in the Windows environment. You can do things you normally would do like sort by filename, by date, by size, open and delete files, re-name files etc. The My Cloud Home drive functions like an external hard drive, only it is not physically connected to your computer, but wirelessly through your router.
+Allows multiple users to create accounts where the data is private so that users do not have access to each others data unless they provide permission to share it.
Negatives:
- No power button on the drive. You can only remotely power down the My Cloud Home using the Shut Down function on either the mobile app or the MyCloud.com web based app. Once powered down, the only way to turn it back on is to unplug the device and plug it back in. There is no way to remotely power on the drive. Would be nice to be able to power on and off remotely so that the drive isn't constantly running.
-No standby mode. Since the drive functions as a personal server, it remains on and continuously spinning until you power it down. If the drive is on all the time and spinning, this brings into question the longevity and durability of the unit.
-The mobile app syncs only photos and videos from the phone. All other files do not sync. This means that if you have any text documents, spreadsheets, or pdfs on your phone, there is no simple method to sync or upload to the My Cloud Home. I could not find a way to manually upload a non-picture/non-video file to the My Cloud Home using the mobile app. Western Digital should fix this via an app update.
-You cannot use the drive by plugging it into your host computer like you would with an external hard drive. If for some reason your internet wifi connection is down, you have no way of accessing your data from the My Cloud Home. Western Digital should consider including a way for dual functionality as both a Cloud drive and as a traditional external hard drive.
-Simple set up, but no supplied user manual. You must find and download the user manual online at Western Digital's MyCloudHome product webpage.
In summary, the Western Digital My Cloud Home provides the ease and flexibility of having your own personal cloud base storage solution and a viable alternative to 3rd party online cloud based storage such as Google Drive, Drop Box, and many others. There is good value in having your own personal home based cloud since you are able to access all of your digital content anywhere in the world without the storage limitations imposed by cloud service providers. Plus you have the comfort of knowing that all your precious digital content is stored in your home network cloud drive instead of in some server half-way around the world. Despite some of the minor negatives that I listed above, the My Cloud Home is a very good drive and the negatives should not deter you from making it one of your top considerations.

A Lean, Mean, Blending Machine!
on August 28, 2017
Posted by: lambda100
My blender of three years sputtered and died recently, and I was in the market for a new one. I've always used the economical blenders that simply got the job done. My old blender would leave small chunks of fruit and veggies unblended resulting in smoothies and shakes that just barely met my standard. Needless to say I was glad to be rid of the old blender and I was ready to try a more premium offering.
I did not know what to expect when I received the Vitamix Explorian E310 blender for I was under the misguided impression that blenders were all the same – after all, they did the same job of simply chopping/grinding/blending food really quickly into a mixture. The Vitamix Explorian did the job, but it did it faster, more effortlessly, and more efficiently than I had ever known using my previous blender. Smoothies were well mixed and homogeneous. There were no leftover chunks of fruits/veggies in the mix. I was also pleasantly surprised with how effortlessly the Vitamix Explorian handled the blending job. It never once strained or hesitated when blending through frozen fruits and ice. My old blender would be vibrating and making some serious grinding noises as it tried to cut through hard material. The Vitamix, however, did it with such ease that I initially thought something was wrong when I did not hear loud grinding noises. I was shocked to find that it had already blended through the frozen fruit without the least bit of effort. This thing is seriously a high performance blender.
The blender comes with the base unit, the container with lid, a tamper rod to push the food contents around the container, the user manual, and a basic blending recipe book.
One thing to note, in case anyone is wondering, is that the 48 oz. (6 cups) container is constructed of plastic not glass.
Here are the pros about this blender:
1. Powerful 12 amp motor that will make difficult blending jobs a breeze
2. The variable speed dial, the on/off switch, and pulse switch are large so they're easy to find, control, and press. (My previous blender had small buttons which annoyed me as I sometimes ended up accidentally pressing the wrong button.)
3. Very good build quality. The base unit is heavy with a hard exterior plastic shell. The power cord is thick and well insulated and appears to be of the same quality of those found on power tools.
4. Compared to my old blender (it was not a Vitamix), the Vitamix is noticeably quieter at all speed settings.
5.Clean up is easy. Just put the container in your dishwasher.
6. A very good 5 year warranty.
7. And the best thing of all, the Vitamix blender is engineered and assembled in the good old U.S.A. Kudos to Vitamix.
The only con I can think of would be the cost of the Vitamix blender. It is by no means cheap, but given that I have now personally experienced the better quality of the blender in terms of more refined texture and homogeneity of mixture along with greater efficiency, I think it is worth the price. Add in the peace of mind of a five year warranty, and you have a have a product with good value.

Listen to your playlist in peace with these Sony headphones. They have a 40mm dome driver to deliver the full depth of audio, and the noise cancelling feature minimizes outside disturbances for a better listening experience. These Sony headphones have a battery life of up to 30 hours for extended jam sessions.

Can anyone who has used these AND the Bose QC35 comment on the overall comfort for long trips? The QC35s are good, but I can't wear them for more than 3-4 hours before my outer ears start to hurt from the pressure from the cups.

I have both the QC35 and the 1000XM2. The QC35 is more comfortable on long trips. The 1000XM2 headband forces the earcups to press more firmly against my ears and is less comfortable.
