Very Smart Cleaning Robot
on April 24, 2020
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
Positives:
-Better cleaning than my other robots (picked up a significant amount of dirt left by 2 other robots earlier that day)
-Requires very little "Babysitting": Avoids obstacles and people very well, doesn't get stuck often
-Mapping shows you where it is and gives you an idea how much is left
-Great battery life, Easily vacuumed a whole floor with >50% battery left.
-Clear speaker which has voice announcements, App also has notifications of messages
-Can function either as vacuum alone or vacuum with mopping depending on need
Negatives:
-Could not get the Video Feature to work at all (Specific to Android?)
-It stopped dead in center of a dark-blue bathroom rug, with a voice error about an 'anti-drop sensor', I can simply lift this away before cleaning though
-No support for cleaning chemicals, only water
This Deebot OZMO T8 AIVI seems significantly smarter than our other five cleaning robots (i.e. cleaning paths are logical for the most part, it avoids hard hits on furniture but does get up close). It seems to make a border around each cleaning area and focus on covering that area entirely before moving to next. It adjusts suction power and speed as needed and seemed to pick up a good amount of dirt on its first run (around 3/4" pile of dirt in the dust bin). A second and third run of same area 2+3 days later showed that it picked up less dirt but still a decent amount (about a 1/4" layer in the dust bin).
With the default water settings (which we adjusted), the floor didn’t seem to get wet at all while mopping. Mopping does do a good job of cleaning the floor, though, and the mopping pad was discolored indicating what it picked up. After washing the mopping pad, it was a tight fit to get it back on but it was like new. It may not be safe to use the mop feature on laminate floors, for example, but that is an optional feature (you can empty the water, and remove the mopping pad, it will still vacuum).
Overall, I feel this Ecovacs Deebot OZMO T8 AIVI cleaned very well, and required minimal intervention. It is a lot easier to use than our other robots which reliably got jammed under certain pieces of furniture, for example.

Long (refillable) toner life, Monochrome laser
on March 23, 2020
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
It will be difficult to review the refillable toner life, because the HP Neverstop 1001NW claims to come with 5,000 pages worth of toner right out of the box, and in the time I have to write this review I won't be able to realistically print 5,000 pages (I just do not have that much paper around). I am interested to see whether it makes sense to buy manufacturer provided toner refill kits versus 'generics' as is often the case (this printer is different, so manufacturer toner might be a safer option if the price is right). Other than the refillable toner, which loads very easy and in a matter of seconds, this is a bare bones network laser printer. It prints single-sided, monochrome (Black only), and does not have any multi-function features (no scanner/fax). Not being multi-function, it does take up a little less space, and is somewhat less complicated to use once the toner is loaded and it is connected to the network. Being monochrome, you won't be forced to buy 4 different color toners, you can just buy the black refill kit, which should save you money. The one negative might be that since it is not duplexing (it is single sided) you might find yourself using more paper than if it were duplexing (two-sided printing). The HP Smart app is potentially useful for some users though of questionable value to myself, I mean yes it will do things like tell you the toner level, and it might let you print from off network (but I wouldn't have a use for that; generally when I print I want something in my hand now and if I'm away from home/office that doesn't help me). HP has long since been my go to company for laser printers (best quality, most reliable for me, historically), it was a little sad to hear they might be acquired by another company and I hope they don't get ruined by that acquisition if it happens. I have to admit I am a little concerned 'conceptually' about the overall lifespan of this printer, because I feel like usually on a typical laser printer when you change a toner, you change more 'mechanical parts' that are in the toner cartridge itself at the same time besides the toner itself, and here you're literally just swapping out the toner particles, so are the mechanical parts going to go bad sooner on their own? Perhaps for the operating cost of this printer it won't matter so much. What can I really say about this printer that I didn't say about it already? It prints fast ("up to 21 ppm" though I suspect like most laser printers, depending on the kind of print job there may be more pre-processing, i.e.plain text will print faster than certain types of graphics), and it is very sharp (though, that is true of most laser printers). At the time of writing of this review there is a crisis going on in the world, and I worry about the ability to acquire toner, and with the toner capacity of this printer I believe I'm going to temporarily disconnect it and put it aside until my other two printers (one laser, one inkjet) are out of supplies, then have this as my 'back up' printer in the event I cannot get supplies as easy.

Cordless, but could use more power
on December 16, 2019
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
The Hoover Cordless Leaf Blower has a wind speed roughly equivalent to our wired model that we already had, but much more convenient without wires for carrying and reaching certain areas of the yard. While it blew most dry leaves strongly, it did not seem to, for example, do as good of a job at blowing the acorns out of the grass (compared with the wired blower). It feels like this will be great to have for daily use, but not a total replacement for a wired leaf blower.
Out of the box it was a simple one-click assembly. The battery does not come with a usable charge in the box, there are 4 lights indicating charge level and a button to show the current level. A full charge takes around 2 to 3 hours. After fifteen or twenty minutes of use, the battery indicator was down to one notch, but fortunately we had finished the job in the back yard we were doing, and put it back on charger until we were again ready to use it in the front yard (which again, it handled fine). I perhaps had unrealistic expectations on battery life (I was hoping for closer to an hour of use per charge). I do know this makes a good case for buying an extra or stronger battery.

Very smooth skin after shaving, easy to use
on November 23, 2019

The Philips Norelco Shaver 2300 gave me a very smooth shave, though I did spend probably 2-3 times more time shaving than I normally would with a manual razor. Some advantages over a manual razor though, include no cuts/nicks (no blood) and I could "hear" the hair being cut so I could tell where an area being covered was clear or mostly clear. It also seemed to get into areas (for example, close to nose) where it is more difficult with a manual razor. Also, no shaving gel was required for this (which could be a cost savings), though I understand there are products designed to help with electric shaver shaving as optional, but not required, supply purchases. I was happy to see that despite the fact that this was 'not' the wet model (you don't want to use this one in the shower) it does support cleaning with water which I did try (ran under faucet while open)-- also the blades both flip up and even can come off entirely (and back on, of course) with relative ease. The razor is quiet, but gives a good shave.

Great sound and Well Designed
on November 11, 2019
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
The sound quality of the BackBeat Fit 3150 is very good, and gives a sense of being surrounded by and immersed into the audio content (whether music/video or audiobook). At the same time, if you don't put the volume too loud, you can hear your surrounding with surprising clarity.
The way these earbuds hooked over my ears, I am far more confident that I will not lose these (I've lost other 'true wireless' buds). These are IP57 Waterproof, it seems this means it should survive up to 1 meter of water, which again is a reminder that I once ruined a pair of another brand of true wireless earbuds by stepping into the shallow end of a pool before realizing I still had them in my pocket. I wore the BackBeat Fit 3150 (listening to an audiobook) while working on a project outside in the rain for 20-30 minutes, and there were no issues caused by the water from the rain.
The charge held by both the earbuds and the charging case (which will charge the earbuds even without a power source if it has a charge itself) seems excellent. The earbuds seem to get a usable charge fairly quickly.
As someone who wears prescription eyeglasses, I've come to really appreciate the "True Wireless" product category, and especially these - because I can take my glasses (with strings) on and off (i.e. to clean them) without getting tangled in headphone wires, and with the over-the-ear grip it's less likely to get bumped out.
I would've preferred when adjusting the volume there was a different tone/volume 'beep' for volume up versus volume down to indicate it is moving the right way. I did make at least one or two phone calls over the BackBeat Fit 3150, and sound was clear on both ends (sending and receiving of sound) on the phone call.
The BackBeat App did not have any special updates for the earbuds at the time I installed them as far as I could tell, which I like because it implies it was designed better up front and didn't need to be patched too often.
One thing I found kind of backwards is that when I unzipped the charging case the natural (to me) way, the right earbud was on the left (and left one was on the right) -- which makes sense for the shape of the case, but was a little confusing when first trying to put them on.
I don't have too much negative to say about these true wireless buds, and think they seem pretty good. I would recommend them.

Decent Security. Adware/Up-selling a big negative.
on October 23, 2019
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
I'm a long-time (on-and-off) user of AVG products, but let me start with what I don't like about AVG Products: The upsell. Here I am, with a newly installed copy of AVG Internet Security, I run the suggested scans as part of setup, and at the fourth scan, it seems to be telling me that if I want to 'tune up' my computer (to "fix" what the scan found), I've got to purchase ADDITIONAL AVG subscription software. (I will note that my computer did not feel slow or like it needed a tune-up.) At the same time it is selling me a subscription to a VPN package in a bundle deal. It tells me this will cost me around $80 for length of subscription. If you now ignore the fourth scan, we come to the fact that it didn't really find anything of interest (no malware, etc.), so that makes it (unfortunately for this review) hard to know if (a) it is really bad and didn't catch any malware that was there, or (b) my windows machine is 'secure-enough' that in 6 months running without anti-malware subscription software, I may not need this software for anything other than "peace of mind". It does come with a 'secure browser', which from what I can tell is basically Chromium (the open source version of Google Chrome), which I guess is secure, but I'm never convinced I want to switch to it. Okay, here's another thing I really (I mean, really) don't like, it installed "AVG SafePrice" extension in Google Chrome without asking me. What this really is, is an extension that spies on all your traffic and sends it to a third party site to "compare prices" on items you are viewing. I can tell you it is sending your web traffic to a third party site, because how else would it get the prices for the items you are looking at. It is also adware in a sense, because it will be promoting purchasing at sites it probably collects advertising revenue from. Okay, so at this point, I've basically uninstalled AVG Internet Security. Please note if you uninstall, it seems after you do, you will have to separately uninstall "AVG Secure Browser" because the AVG Internet Security Uninstaller didn't handle that. Oh, after you uninstall that, there are still THREE(3) AVG extensions in Chrome that stay behind and you'll have to go into your chrome settings to remove those by hand. I did all that and I'm still not certain I am fully rid of this product. This product might be a fine set of security software if it wasn't for the unwanted adware and unnecessary extra software and marketing that comes with it.

The best features of the full version
on October 21, 2019
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
When first opening up either Premiere or Photoshop Elements, I was greeted by a welcome-screen which features a series of tutorials which I explored a little and found helpful -- and on the lower right of the window were links to the tools: a photo organizer, photo editor ("Photoshop Elements"), and Video Editor ("Premiere Elements"). Naturally, depending on whether you've installed both (separate installer for each) one may not be available yet. When I went to the video editor and explored, I noticed the "Expert" mode made me feel more comfortable as someone who has used Premiere Pro for a few years for home movies primarily. Premiere Elements seemed to have the tools I would need and was somewhat familiar with. I imported some clips easy enough, dragged them to the timeline, and enjoyed exploring the features. A few features of the Pro version I thought I needed were missing, but I found ways to work around them in Elements to accomplish what I needed with alternate tools. The video editor offered a variety of export option ranging from 4k TV format down to animated GIFs. The "Expert" mode in the photo editor had most of the tools that I was familiar with in the Creative Cloud "full" version of Photoshop (such as the Healing Brush, Magic Wand, and other tools), and everything worked as expected. Perhaps my favorite tool is the Healing Brush which allows you to edit things out of pictures with ease. Adobe is the gold-standard company in this kind of creative software, and Elements seems aimed more at people (yes, like myself) who may not be full-time paid creative professionals but need to do some amount of photo/video manipulation/creation (and who doesn't!). In many ways, these two software packages let me work a lot quicker than I did in the full version software which had a lot of extra tools on the screen which I mostly never bothered learning about due to lack of necessity for my personal projects. I find this software is near perfect for my needs, and does not seem to require continual monthly subscription fees like the full "Creative Cloud" versions.

Large Full HD monitor with wide viewing angle
on October 3, 2019
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
I acquired this as a monitor primarily for use with my Windows desktop machine, and loved the larger size compared to my previous setup. I might wind up using the second HDMI port for hooking up my notebook computer to it as-needed. There was an unexpected benefit when I learned the monitor did appear to have speakers built-in, so sound over HDMI worked fine. The IPS display means that I can view the screen from different angles (i.e. off to the side) and still get a great picture, which sometimes is an issue with flat panels. The monitor surface has more of a glossy finish than my previous display. The stand and frame of the display are also visually appealing. The Full HD resolution is great for most "video" purposes though I know when I try to fit a magazine/newspaper print page reproduction on the screen Full HD in landscape is not 'clear enough' unless you zoom larger than the screen, and unfortunately the stand only supports landscape. The monitor appeared to have no flaws (no bad pixels). Overall, I very much like how this monitor improved the look of my desk.

Prints fast, Good Quality Print
on September 26, 2019
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
This Brother wireless color digital printer prints high quality (sharp/dark print) content at a high page-per-minute rate. If there were any negatives it is that it's not a duplexing printer (doesn't print two sided) - which I won't hold against it because it's as-advertised, but note that a duplexing model could save you a lot of paper (used properly) and would be more environmentally friendly (less paper used would ALSO mean that much less time repurchasing paper supplies). I printed a test page from a Samsung Note 10+ android phone and right away the phone detected the printer by being on the same WiFi and was ready to print. With Windows (desktop/laptop), interacting with network printers has become very easy in recent years, generally very little set up is required and it may even autodetect the printer without you doing anything. In the case of my windows 10 pc, I did need to manually go into windows settings, devices, printers and add device -- but it autodetected the printer and installed the driver and was good to go. On an older Windows 7 PC, though, the driver would not auto-install from control panel, so I needed to go to support.brother.com site to download the full driver.
I just want to note that from what I've seen the "genuine" (Brother) toner cartridges "seem" way high in terms of price (though not out of touch with other manufacturer-brand cartridges), and will note that if that scares you please consider researching the generic equivalent cartridges because they can save you more than the price of the printer itself when buying all 4 cartridges.

Good Quality Sound but no ARC support (?)
on August 27, 2019
Posted by: RobWLINY2
from Levittown, NY
The LG SL4Y sound bar has decent quality sound and great bass. It has a clear, easy to read display front and center, and it fades after a period of non-interaction so it does not distract from the video.
While I was hoping to be positive in my review, I must note that it does not appear to support HDMI ARC, which in my case means I do not have volume control from the TV remote and need to use the LG Sound bar remote to control volume and another remote to control channel. This may be a deal-breaker for me, and I (at this time) went back to an older sound bar which supported ARC.
While optical audio with TV was great (except for above comment) I was not able to practically use it with Bluetooth for TV (lip sync off - makes it difficult to enjoy video), but for other Bluetooth devices the sound is pretty nice.
