Good Quality Sound and Comfortable Fit
on August 3, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
These headphones sound good - if I wasn't used to higher quality buds I might say these were terrific. There is a good bass sound, and other sound is acceptable, but the overall sound is not as crisp as I'm used to from other earbuds at a similar price.
If there is one advantage of the Sony WF-C700N Truly Wireless Noise Cancelling In-Ear Headphones, it's that the fit is very comfortable (I may continue to use these earbuds regularly because they feel very good in my ears). There are three sizes of earbud tips included (one on the earbuds by default, which fits me fine, and two additional pairs, larger sized and smaller).
The charging case has a USB-C port, and included in the package is a short USB-A to USB-C adapter, but it lacks the power adapter itself (chances are these days you already have USB-C chargers from other devices that should work with it). Like most other true wireless earbuds, the earbuds themselves hold a charge (7-8 hours), and there is a charging case that also holds a full recharge and can charge the earbuds whether it is plugged in or not.
The noise canceling feature works well (blocks out unwanted sounds), but fortunately it can be turned on and off because I sometimes like to be aware of sounds around me when I'm wearing earbuds (i.e., if I'm walking outdoors and want to hear approaching vehicles).
I do like these earbuds, but I'm not sure if I'd recommend them to a friend, it might depend on how picky they are about sound quality versus comfort.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

RAZER Cobra - Excellent Wired Gaming Mouse
on August 2, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
The Razer Cobra wired gaming mouse is an excellent option for gaming and daily computer usage. When I click the left mouse button, right mouse button or mouse button 4, or mouse button 5, there is a very audible mechanical clicking noise that lets you know it was clicked. Buttons 4 and 5 have a different click sound than the left and right mouse buttons. The audible feedback of the clicking noise is helpful to let me know that the click happened. The scroll wheel is a little more silent if clicked. There is a button that adjusts the DPI - or helps adjust how quickly motion on the screen happens relative to mouse movements (whether you prefer a small range of motion or a larger one). The Razer Speedflex cable (the "wired" part of the wired mouse) is very light and does not get in the way. By default, the RGB lighting on the mouse is a slow, gentle color change, but that can be adjusted with the Razer Synapse software. Windows automatically prompted me to install Razer Synapse when I plugged the mouse in for the first time. It also lets me control the preprogrammed DPI settings sequence (toggled by a button on the mouse). If you’re unsure if you want a wired or wireless mouse, consider that with wired mice, you don’t need to worry about if your battery is charged enough before playing. This one is a good option, and I would recommend it.

Super Fast Multi-Function Duplexing Printer
on July 29, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
This HP LaserJet Pro 4101fdw printer comes with a touch screen which makes setting it up on wireless very easy. This is my 3rd currently running HP-Brand LaserJet printer still operating in my home (one of the others is a color printer, and the other is a tank). Without any hesitation, I want to share that this Is the -fastest- LaserJet I've tried so far. You can see the page feeding slowly with some of the other laser printers. This printer, instead, pumps out the pages one after another (the physical pages pile up a little slower if it's duplexing because it must pull them back to print the back). I quickly discovered that the scanner could even scan and copy double-sided pages fast. Unlike all my other laser printers, printing photographs (only black and white) happens very quickly, and there is not much processing time before printing. This printer prints photos without delay. I did not test the fax function (no one I know has a machine hooked up these days), though I set it up and intend to have it available (at least one doctor’s office still faxes results). I am very impressed by this HP LaserJet Pro 4101fdw. I recommend it if you’re looking for a fast black and white laser printer that can print and scan 2-sided (“duplexing”).

Long Battery Life & Great Cleaning
on June 8, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
I received the Dyson V11 Cordless Vacuum, and I first charged it fully. Blue lights flash while charging; this took 1-3 hours. Once it was charged, I wasted no time and proceeded to test it right away by vacuuming (1) our staircase (which has a rug) and (2) three more rugs that are on the ground floor.

The staircase typically gets the dirtiest not only because of use but because our vacuuming robots don't do stairs. When I did the staircase, I removed the arm and plugged the vacuum head into the part with the suction motor and dust bin. The first thing I noticed (after selecting a language) was that there were about 30 minutes left on the battery. Still, if you need it to last longer, you can select an energy-saving mode that lasts up to 60 minutes (a high-power setting gives less battery life). Thirty minutes was enough to do the needed job, much longer than our older model Shark cordless vacuum would last.

The next thing I noticed was that this vacuum operates by a trigger. Pull it only when you want the vacuum to operate - so as I was cleaning the stairs and moving between each step, I could release the trigger and save the battery. This Dyson V11 Cordless Vacuum is very easy to operate and lighter than other comparable featured vacuums I've tried.

After the stairs, I emptied the dust bin, and wow, much dirt came out for its first run. Emptying the dust bin is very easy, and you do it by pressing on a little handle behind the dust bin on the battery side. You release it and push the dirt/dust through the bottom, which pops open. It does a good job of completely emptying the bin with minimal effort.

After I vacuumed the stairs, I decided to see how well the vacuum robots were doing (they ran today and almost every day). I cleaned all three rugs, and there was nowhere near as much dirt as the stairs had, but there still was enough dirt that it picked up to say, "At least periodically, the Dyson V11 Cordless Vacuum should go over to pick up what the robots missed." I have dust allergies (tested by an allergist), and any dirt or dust I can remove should reduce allergic responses.

I strongly recommend this vacuum, which has the best battery I've seen on a cordless. It's light, cleans great, and is very easy to use. Honestly, I didn't even open the manual to set it up and get it running. Everything was straightforward. This is my first Dyson, which lives up to the brand’s reputation (excellent!).

Excellent 65" TCL 4K QLED Google TV
on June 6, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
The TCL 65Q650G QLED 4K HDTV picture is vibrant with excellent color reproduction, making at least some videos look better than any other 65" QLED TV I've owned (this is our third in the last five years). When you investigate all the various TV display technologies, you’ll see they all have positives and negatives regardless of how much you spend - this one is a good option at its price point. The black colors look dark enough for my liking, and the bright colors shine brightly. I've noticed no problem with the smoothness of motion on this television.

The built-in sound (without external speakers) is good but could be better. This TCL TV does not have the deep bass sound of our Samsung TV, but you can hook up a sound-bar if that's important to you. I did hook up a Bose sound-bar via HDMI eARC, and it worked fine, with no lip-syncing issues. I'm leaving that connected at this time.

The Google TV (smart tv function) was easy to set up (having an Android phone may have helped), but admittedly took probably 15-20 minutes to set up (I had a lot of initial apps to install, but app support is terrific). We're watching Hulu right now as I write this part of the review, and we also tried out Netflix, Max, Paramount+, YouTube, Peacock, Disney+, and more. There were even apps for some online technical classes I get through a subscription, and you can find fitness apps and videos.

Built-in Chromecast is great to have. If it didn’t have that, I would purchase a Chromecast adapter. In settings, there is an option not to notify the other Android devices on the same Wi-Fi if I'm casting (by default, everyone on the same Wi-Fi could either 'stop casting' or 'pause' or some limited other options). Among other things, I already used Chromecast to cast an exercise video from YouTube (my doctor said I needed to lose weight) and did a phone screen mirroring cast separately.

I plugged in an external Apple TV device, as our cable company lets us get the channels from that, and the TV remote conveniently worked the Apple TV without having to use the Apple remote.

After initial testing in the living room, I placed this TCL TV in my bedroom, and it looks enormous compared to the 42.5" TV I had there before this one. I checked, and there was a sleep timer option which I will most certainly use if I want to have the TV help me fall asleep at nighttime (or for a nap). It appeared that if I was running an app on the TV and turned on the sleep timer, the app I was running quit, but if I was viewing the Apple TV (HDMI input), there were no issues with the sleep timer.

THANKS TO ITS SPEED AND FEATURES, this TV is much more usable than my prior television. I anticipate many years of enjoyment of this television before I’d need to replace this one.

DELL Laptop with Excellent Battery Life!
on May 24, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
This Snapdragon Powered DELL Inspiron laptop is terrific for a Windows PC. I finally found a Windows laptop with decent battery life. I am using the system quite a bit, and over 20 minutes, I used 5% battery, which should forecast more than 6.5 hours of battery life. It uses a USB-C charging cable; for example, a “generic” Insignia USB-C laptop charger I was using with my MacBook and Chromebook also seems to charge this laptop.
If there were one thing I might change about this laptop, I might consider bringing it to geek squad to upgrade the internal storage. It’s possible I can get by with the 256GB, though, and might opt to save money and limit local storage usage (More and more can be done on the cloud these days, and we have network-attached storage in-house).
Neither ‘Windows Hello’ option (Fingerprint or Facial Recognition) is supported on this laptop, there is no fingerprint reader, and the camera is not compatible. I’m personally happy just using the pin code to log in. On the laptop is a full HD webcam included, so if you do video conferencing, you’ll appreciate that.
You’ll note in the description of this laptop that it comes with “S-Mode” enabled. If you’re not familiar, this basically locks you out of installing applications that aren’t from the Windows store. Just know that if this is a problem for you it can be turned off. I personally turned it off early on as I wanted to be able to install an application from outside the Windows store; however, if you do that, there is the risk of a less stable system because you’re no longer blocking unwanted apps from installing.
There is a lovely feel (a texture) on the keys on this laptop. It’s a small thing that makes a difference in the “quality feeling” of this laptop. Also, the IPS display looks beautiful, and there is font smoothing done in Windows these days, so the text looks much better than I remember it before I switched to MacOS.
I recommend this laptop, and I would consider even giving this model laptop to a family member.

"Good" Quality sound you can take with you
on May 23, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
Sony's XB100 Compact Bluetooth Speaker has good sound for its size and price. It’s not the best sound, but for what it is, it's good. The sound quality reminded me of listening to an average factory car radio, but the advantage of this is that it's small and portable. The included strap means you can hook it onto your wrist or anything else (such as a bike handle) and take it. In fact, at a low volume, I will enjoy this both while walking and if I get biking again this season, probably listening to either the SiriusXM app or YouTube Music. This speaker is priced initially around the price of a decent pair of wireless earbuds, which in my opinion, makes it a good value.

The speaker charges with USB-C, which for many people means they probably have multiple chargers available that will charge it in the house (a short cable is included). It can be used while plugged in. The power button turns it on and off. The first time it's turned on, it will immediately go into Bluetooth pairing mode. There is also an easy Bluetooth pairing button to pair manually. The pairing was easy. My phone immediately popped up a connect window with a picture of the speaker, making it a one-button press to connect to the phone. However, if you're in a public place, you may want to avoid putting it in pairing mode as someone unexpected might pair with it. A play/pause button is handy if you need silence (to hear a conversation, for example) for a little while. There is also a +/- set of buttons that raise and lower the volume.

My 2nd BlueAir Purifier, Better than the Last One
on May 16, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
I chose the Blue Pure 311i Max to replace my older model BlueAir Filter. The new filter can connect to Wi-Fi for remote app control. The app seems to report the air quality on a chart, but so far, it's saying my existing air is "Excellent," which may be because it replaced the existing filter, which was also doing a decent job. However, some PM 2.5 was detected in the room (PM2.5 is "Fine particles", such as "fine dust, exhaust, bacteria, and pet dander"), so it's working already. The app controls Fan Speed (lower speeds are quieter/silent, higher speeds filter quicker), Automatic Mode, Night Mode (extra quiet and dimmed lights), and a child lock function. Of course, the app will tell you how much life is left in your filter as well - and yes, the device has a filter warning light on it; however, the app may let you know how close you are to that 'replace filter light' coming on. The app has a welcome home feature to filter the air as you get closer to home, but you have to make sure you give the app (1) background location permission, and (2) unrestricted battery (no optimization). My previous blue air filter did not have Wi-Fi features, so this is a nice upgrade.
I will tell you immediately there is a different quality in the air and a different feel in the room on the first day of its running. I feel more relaxed (my skin even) in this room than before I replaced it. There was previously only one or two other places (outside the house, such as other businesses) where my skin had this relaxed feeling, probably because of good filtration there (I suspected). Now I have it at home. Time will tell if this remains true or if it's just like a placebo effect appearing because I was hoping for something like this.
Most air filters work best in a room with closed windows because, with open windows, you are filtering outside air with an endless supply of allergens. In reality, most of us do occasionally open the windows, especially (in my case) in fall and spring (which may be the worst time for allergens) when temperatures outdoor are nicer. It's unclear if doing this will shorten the filter life.
I chose this product after already owning another BlueAir purifier, because i was happy with the brand. This product is even better than my last one, and I recommend this especially if you have allergies,

Good Backup Battery for Electronics
on May 3, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
I'm a long term Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) user/believer, and have frequently (though not exclusively) purchased the APC brand in the past for their long-term reputation and reliability. The Back-UPS Pro BN1050M model is the latest I've tried here. Battery life on this model is good for my needs, for the load I planned on using it for, it was estimating over 1.5 hours of battery runtime. The box indicates there are models with higher or lower battery life depending on your needs and budget.
I will disclose that over 5 days of testing, we did not have a legitimate power outage, power outages happen but just not that frequently, so to some extent I can only simulate power loss by either pulling the plug or using the menus to read the info.
I know from past history with using these types of UPS devices in an outage, that during an outage the one thing I want powered the longest is our internet and phone service, namely our cable modem (which powers both internet AND phone line), and also at least one wireless router (I also backed up one ethernet network switch). When I checked it once the battery was full, it was saying those devices had 98 minutes remaining if the power went out -- that's more than enough time to look up and call emergency services to report the outage/cause. As per my main computer, I have a laptop with a 12+ hour battery, and it will not normally be near the UPS, but it's important that it get internet service as long as possible in an outage (in our case, our cell phone reception is weak for back up internet without standard cable Wi-Fi).
Before you get too comfortable with using this for protection, make note that half the plugs in the back (4) are surge protection only (no battery back-up), the other 4 are battery backup. That's a good design because you don't want to have too much drawing on the battery, but probably need other devices protected from surge anyway on the same wall-outlet (one wall outlet powers all 8 outlets on the device).
When I first hooked up the battery, there was a spark which immediately raised my anxiety about the whole situation, but I recalled the same issue installing prior APC branded power supplies (some other brands don't have you hook up the battery the same way). Hooking up the battery, it's evident the battery itself is replaceable. The red battery cable connector looked different than the black cable (different connectors) but I confirmed with customer support that this was by design and proceeded. All was fine. Anyhow, I decided to take one star off this rating, and that's because of the spark.
I verified that pulling the power plug causes it to kick in, but these UPS devices also tend to kick in during power fluctuations (not just power outages) and I cannot simulate that in testing unless it happened.
I can confirm during testing that two of our outlets were detected by the UPS as having a wiring fault (red light on back of UPS), which indicates something is wrong with the outlet wiring. APC has an article explaining why this light might come on, but in our case it's probably a missing ground wire because it's a house with older wiring on one floor.
The digital display on this APC UPS Model is very bright and easy to read, the button (on top) on the right lets you cycle through the information screens. It is useful to get an idea how much power remains in an outage, and there is other power information shown. One important button will allow you to silence the speaker/alarm, which if you place this device in a bedroom may be important at night (unless you need to be awakened in an outage) -- when the speaker is off there is a slash through the speaker icon.
If you've got a desktop type computer where a power outage could result in data loss (because unlike a laptop, it doesn't have a battery without one of these UPS devices), you're potentially saving that system from damage (and yes, unwanted crashes) in the event of an outage with this. A USB cable is included for that purpose which I suspect would help automatically shut that machine down if no one was there.
So, yes, I would recommend this model APC UPS, though depending on your power needs other models may fit your personal usage differently.

Great Sound, Noise Cancelling, Comfort!
on April 21, 2023
Posted by: RobWLINY2
These JVC Marshmallow Plus Low Latency ANC headphone sound very good, a good value at the price point they're at. These are comfortable, they really feel like pillows in the ear. I didn't notice the comfort as I inserted them, but once I started listening, I really noticed the feeling of comfort in my ears unlike any other earbud I have ever tried. I didn't want to take them out, and they didn't feel like they were going to fall out.

As far as these earbuds being low latency, they're very good but they are not zero delay. For example, when I stream videos, I did notice a slight lip sync mis-match which might be occurring due to a little delay (which I think is common with Bluetooth).

Noise cancelling works well, I didn't hear the tv in the room I was in nor someone talking to me while I had it turned on and sound was playing. However, the pass-thru sound mode, when you tap once on the right earbud, results in volume lowering and sound/voices from around you are passing thru so you can have a conversation if needed without popping out the earbuds.

Unfortunately, there was some moderate frustration when I opened the package to set these JVC Marshmallow Plus earbuds up for first time use. The issue was that the charging connectors on the earbuds were covered, and when I removed one of them the memory foam eartip cover came right off. I had a lot of trouble getting them back on and was trying to be extra careful because there was a warning on a paper insert about being careful not to tear them (but the instructions were not "clear" as to how not to do that). With some amount of effort I got it, though, with sound playing (which helped me know when it was right, because until the speaker was lined up right with the hole in the memory foam for sound escape, it just didn’t sound right before it was right).
