These are an upgrade from default Quest 2 speakers
on October 17, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
The Logitech Chorus Off-Ear Integrated Audio for Meta Quest 2 was an upgrade from the default speaker system that was included with the Quest 2. The sound was clearer than the default speakers, and the best example I can give is that when I heard ‘wind’ blowing (such as at some of the menus) it sounded more like real wind than something coming out of a cheap speaker.
The speakers seemed to be able to be positioned in one of three positions, in the upmost position they are muted (which is terrific to be able to do), the next position is one click down which is right over the ear (but in my case, this touched my ear and was uncomfortable), and the downmost position which is where I wound up using it (good comfort and position for sound).
The installation of the Logitech Chorus is simple, you first plug in the USB C cable from the Chorus into the headset. Next, you slide the side with the USB connector right over the headset strap (this was easy to do), run the cable which goes to the opposite side over the top of the headset, and then slide on the opposite side. Charging happens through a passthrough port on the underside of the chorus on the one side. There is no need to charge the chorus separately, they are powered by the Quest 2.

Amazing Gaming Display - Colorful and Responsive
on October 5, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
After trying out this display with several games on a Windows PC, I can say the HP IPS Display's colors are more vivid and true to real-life than what I was used to– red and pink colors stood out to me as being better reproduced, shiny things look shinier, everything is very well defined (QHD resolution on a screen this size looks beautiful). If the action moved fast on the screen, the screen was not blurred, it was crisp (this is the 1ms response time at work). The refresh rate (which is variable with AMD Freesync) seemed to work perfect (there were no split frames on the display while playing).

The display has a color mode selection, that by default is set to 'gaming' (which I used while doing same). I also tried the Cinema color scheme while playing movies and was also impressed with the quality. The color mode is easy to change from the menu buttons behind the screen on the right side (halfway up) of the display.

The base slides up and down and tilts, which works out great for me with bifocal lenses as if I need to read it up close I can lower it to the bottom and tilt it up (and read it through my lower part of lens which is for reading), or if I want to play a game from a little distance I can lift it up higher and tilt it down (and look through the top of my lenses for distance).

Pros:

-Easy to assemble base (no tools needed) with both an up/down lift and tilting ability
-Easy to use menu buttons.
-Excellent color reproduction, the screen looks more alive (less dull).
-Pixels update fast (1ms), no blur during fast motion
-Nice Size for a desktop gaming setup
-QHD is sharp, I can tell a difference looking at games with 1080P versus this QHD resolution.

Cons:
-If you’re into curved screens this is not one.
-If you’re looking for 4K resolution, this isn’t quite it, but it’s a lot closer than 1080P and you might not notice the difference from 4k.

Well Designed Intelligent RGB Keyboard
on September 30, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
This keyboard is beautiful, the colors and the brightness of the lights, and even lighting up the wrist pad are all well done. RGB Keyboards are not new, but this one is more intelligent than any other I've used before. I waited until night time to review this Roccat Vulcan II Max because I thought I would appreciate the lights more at night (I did). The keyboard started on a color setting which I believe they call "Wave" which is a cool rainbow that bounces in both directions in a nice way. The AIMO Intelligent Lighting mode seemed to become both available and the default after installing the software and downloading an update for the keyboard itself within that software. I very much like the AIMO setting, but I also like that I can try different ones. For example, I have one on right now called Ripple FX, and it's fun seeing the illumination from the keyboard changed as I type with two hands (there is a ripple effect from both sides of the keyboard originating where keys are pressed). The disadvantage of ripple, though, is if you type at night it will be harder to see the keys when they're not illuminated. Custom mode lets you select different color patterns for keys by zone, such as WASD. Most if not all places you set colors in the keyboard app, you can also adjust the keyboard brightness. One note of advice about the app, down on the bottom right of the app window is an "Auto Apply" option which seems to be a way to let you experiment with the options and as you select them, the keyboard updates shortly after.
As per games, I played a couple inside of the PC Xbox app, and I could play well and felt like I had more control over the movements in the game with this keyboard. The keys were very responsive and I liked the clicking noise made which let me hear the keys being pressed.

Great Vacuum Robot for price-range
on September 27, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
This robot for our living area has one major advantage over another similar cost big brand robot we use in the downstairs area, and that's that in at least some areas where the other robot often gets stuck, this robot just bounces right off the area and continues cleaning. It's not perfect when it comes to getting stuck (from 3 runs it got stuck one time), but it's the best at avoiding getting stuck when compared to similarly priced robots we own. On a positive note, it detected when it was stuck and played a short tune to get someone's attention (another vacuum I tried recently just spun in place for minutes until I intervened).
One nice thing about these non-mapping style robots is that you can sort of guide them (by placing them or with your feet directing them) into an area you want cleaned and even block them into a part of a room. Some of the other "mapping" robots will insist on following a pattern based on a map location (you can "only" direct it with an app), where this Shark ION should be able to clean where you place it.
If there's one negative, it's that it bumps into furniture (i.e. wood table/chairs) a lot and it's not clear if it's doing damage (over the last decade+ these chairs have taken a beating from a variety of vacuum robots; being all marked up on the bottom 3 inches where the robots strike). If you had a robot that supported object detection, which tends to be a pricier model, it would tend to avoid striking the furniture.
When it docked itself, I made two observations: (1) this Shark ION parks 'backwards' compared to other vacuum robots we've owned, and (2) that means I don't have easy access to empty the bin while it's charging, that's inconvenient (though I can see "if" this were a self-emptying model, parking bin towards the dock "would" make sense.) We have five other vacuum robots in the house currently functional, and none of those five other blocks the dustbin when docked.
The Shark ION paired to Wi-Fi easily! Yay. However, the app didn't seem to have any control or interaction or awareness of the robot once it was set up. The app reported the robot's battery as "Loading" and when I clicked the app to tell the robot to clean, the robot did nothing and the app said it was cleaning. The app had a 'locate' feature while it thought it was cleaning, and that didn't seem to do anything either. I'm willing to believe this was a temporary outage, because if it were a Wi-Fi problem, I would've expected the app to say it couldn't communicate with the robot rather than saying it was cleaning when it wasn't.
It picked up a good amount of dust, most of the dust in the bin was stuck to the filter so I needed to brush that off, larger items than dust were in the bin itself (this was, for example, tiny beads from fall decorations and similar sized items). Given that this floor is vacuumed "at least" daily, the amount of dust it picked up seems appropriate and as good or better than similarly priced vacuum robots.

Neato D9's 200 minute runtime, covering 1,600 square feet on a single charge, makes it ideal for medium to larger-sized homes. You can't use circles to clean a square corner. That's why Neato's D-shape allows for a 70% larger brush than those found in round robots along with an industry-leading 0.70 liter dirt bin that holds more dirt between cleanings. Neato's D9 offers corner-to-corner and edge-to-edge cleaning in a short amount of time and its unique Helix multi-surface brush is now 50% quieter on hard surfaces. Neato's D9 also offers 40% greater dirt pickup than D3 & D5. The powerful performance combined with an easy-to-clean Ultra-Performance filter traps up to 99.5% of allergens and dust. Equipped with energy-saving Eco Mode for general vacuuming to high-performance Turbo Mode, Neato gets the job done. The Neato D9 uses LaserSmart powered by LIDAR, the same technology used in self-driving vehicles, to map and navigate your home with precision, leaving your carpets with those satisfying straight vacuum lines in no time. Because it uses lasers, not cameras, to navigate your home it works just as well in low light conditions like under furniture and never records images of you and your belongings. It also doesn't have microphones on board and features state-of-the-art encryption both on the robot and in the cloud. With regular software updates sent automatically, you can feel confident you're getting the latest features as soon as they're released. Get cleaning in minutes with Neato’s hassle-free setup using the MyNeato app. Create Zones to target trouble spots more often—like crumbs under the dining table. Create No-Go Zones to avoid spaces such as a pet dish or child’s play area. Clean where you want, when you want—on demand or scheduled in advance. Available in a premium, brushed black finish that fits in with any décor. Let Neato D9 take care of the dirty work. You've got better things to do. The Ultimate Cleaning Machine.

"Intelligent" may be wrong term, and poor Wi-Fi
on September 25, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
Out of the box, you get the impression the Neato D9 is designed more like a full size/power vacuum than the typical vacuum robot I've used, the brush looks more significant in size and position. The battery life is claimed as 200 minutes on the box, that's likely based on what you get in "eco mode" (the default). Our house has two floors, it only took 27 minutes to do 75% (one room was closed) of the downstairs of our house, which it did in eco mode using only 11% of its battery.
Be aware, when you set it up, it wants twelve inches on any side of its charging area clear, so you'll need to make sure you have a space with some clearance. I had placed it beside two other robot vacuums in close quarters and it wound up getting into a sort of crash where its wheels were up in the air on top of its charging dock (No one was home when the crash happened, we were out getting lunch).
While running in the living/dining rooms on turbo mode, it drove head on straight into a cardboard shiny/reflective-print box (flat side of the Neato D9 to it) and just kept pushing straight into it for more than 3 minutes (not moving anywhere) until I paused it. It was clear it was just going to keep going until its battery died if I didn't stop it. This is a big negative because this (and the earlier mentioned crash) means I cannot really leave this thing cleaning without babysitting it.
The neato robot had many issues connecting to my Wi-Fi (and we have a good signal on a 3-node mesh network, including one node 5 -8 feet from the robot's charging dock), but when I moved the vacuum closer to the main mesh router node (wired router) it seemed to work okay or at least downloaded the firmware successfully. While it was cleaning, I saw the app say the robot was "Offline" more than a few times (more often than it said it was online) but it came back online and continued cleaning the whole time regardless. When I was pairing it with WiFi, sometimes it could see all three of our SSIDs (from 5 routers, 3 of which are meshed together under one SSID) plus neighbors' Wi-Fi systems, and other times it saw zero networks anywhere.
When it ran the first time, it banged into a lot of wood furniture surprisingly hard (it made noise of plastic hitting wood). I didn't expect that because it claimed to have laser mapping and I expected the laser to help it avoid obstacles. It got tangled up in wires once (my fault for leaving them in its path). It also didn't go under tables (between legs of chairs) to clean like some of our other bots do.
The dust bin at the end of each of 3 runs filled "maybe" 5% of the dustbin each time (we do vacuum every day normally, so this may be good). I'm not unhappy with how it cleans.
Again, overall, this cleans well, but my main negatives about it are (1) Wi-Fi quality seems poor (and Wi-Fi is mandatory at least the first time to download firmware updates), (2) It cannot be left alone (it gets into crashes (did once anyway) or drives blindly straight ahead when it's against a flat surface (again, once so far), and (3) it seems to crash into objects it should be able to avoid.

Mouse that is amazingly comfortable on wrist
on September 20, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
The Logitech Lift Vertical Mouse is my first experience using a vertical mouse and I was surprised how much more comfortable it is on the wrist compared to a traditional mouse. It works much the same way as a traditional mouse, but the buttons and wrist placement seem much better thought out. When I started using it with my MacBook, I didn't want to stop using it --- that is, I didn't reach for the touchpad at all.
The Lift Vertical Mouse uses (and includes) a single double-A battery to power itself, which is much better than rechargeable for a device like this, because when you are out of power you don't want to wait an hour+ before you can use the mouse again, you can just swap batteries and be back to work. When not in use, you can flip a power button on the bottom off to save battery.
When I first started using it after pairing, I thought the mouse moved around the screen a little too fast for my preferences, but one button press (below, or in front of, the scroll wheel) and the mouse moved around at a normal speed.
Other buttons included are left and right click, the scroll wheel, and two buttons on the opposite side which seem to work like 'back' and 'forward' in a web browser for example.
The only difficulty I might have with this mouse, which is not a fault of the mouse, is that my laptop sleeve bag may be too thin to fit the mouse while carrying the MacBook. I could, and might, get a bigger laptop bag with a bigger pocket to deal with this.

Charges MacBook Air & iPad at the same time
on September 15, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
This Insignia 65W 2-port USB-C charger appears to be capable of charging both my 13-inch MacBook Air (2020 M1 Model) and my 9th Generation iPad at the same time, though perhaps not as quickly as using two separate chargers.
If I used just one port, I believe I got the full charge power for my MacBook, but it mattered which port I plugged the MacBook USB-C cable into. It appeared if I placed it on the port closest to the edge of the charger, the MacBook would say "Power Source: Power Adapter, Battery Not Charging", but if I switched to the other port (further from the edge) it did not say "Battery Not Charging," and successfully charged the MacBook to 100% relatively quickly (it was less than 10% down from full).
If I left that port connected to the mac where it was, and then plugged in a second cable to charge my iPad, I can confirm that it did charge (that is the battery % went up from 81% to 93% within 30 minutes). Further, later in the day I ran down the MacBook charge, and plugged it in while the iPad was still plugged in and confirmed it was able to charge the MacBook still.
Keep in mind that if you're charging two devices at the same time, you don't get the full 65 watt on the laptop port, but at least for me the convenience of only using one plug for both devices is worth it (and I typically charge the MacBook overnight only, so if it takes a little longer to charge I might not notice), because my surge power strip was relatively full with the other two.
One word of advice, because the two USB ports have different wattages, if using both, you may want to have two DIFFERENT COLOR (I have black and white) USB-C cables to make sure you're using the right one.

I wanted to like this printer, but...
on September 14, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
The Expression XP-4200 from Epson was a bit of a pleasant surprise (the printer looks really nice out of the box) and bit of a disappointment at the same time.
As per disappointment, when I tried printing a photo OF THE PRINTER that I took (printed on regular inkjet paper), the colors were disappointing. I cannot say whether or not the output would have been better on "Epson Specialty Paper" because none of that was included in what I was shipped to evaluate it here with. I do know on other color printers I own (inkjet and laser, even from another Epson) the colors are definitely more vivid on standard paper.
Before that, I was set up for disappointment as I followed through the installation procedure: First it prompts me to scan a QR code to download the printer's app, I follow through, but while the app can see my other Epson printer, it cannot see this one. It's worth noting at this point I had not yet been given the option to set up the printer on WiFi, so that may be why the app couldn't find the printer (but it's the one controlling the order of things). Next, the prompts on the screen for the initialization are poorly written, for example, it prompts with "Initialization Starts. Install the Ink Cartridge for Setup that came with the printer"-- and what got me there is that the words "Initialization Starts" do not sound like something meant for me (the end user) to read, but rather a step that the design folks were to follow. Next, I have to wait 6 minutes for the printer to initialize, and I'm wondering (1) every time I change the ink is it going to be 6 minutes, or (2) if not, instead could they have done some of the initialization at the factory? Then there is an information screen after the initialization which not only seems unnecessary, it seems -- I'll say, poorly worded: It says "Initialization complete. Move on to print quality adjustments"- and like the "Initialization Starts" screen the "Move on" (which seems rude) sounds like instructions for the programmer more so than something I should be reading-- it should just take me to print quality adjustments without having me "move on" by pressing ok. Finally, initialization completes, I'm at the main menu, and it *still* hasn't connected me to WiFi which one would've thought would be part of initialization. I was able to go to settings and set up WiFI, though, and it connected fine.
Besides Photos, I tried out printing a PDF file and maybe I'm just used to laser quality but I thought the text looked relatively poor quality, it's not smooth. It does print text quickly which is nice (unlike photos which took many minutes a page), and it does print on both sides of the page (which will save you paper).

Easy, Fast, Quiet, Low-operating-cost Last Printer
on August 26, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
This is a fast two-sided printer that you want if you're looking to save money in terms of cost per page. For one, it comes with about 5,000 pages worth of toner included. Manufacturer brand toner sells for about 1/2 a penny per page, the lowest price I've seen on brand name toner. Also, when you're printing, if you select to print two sided (this printer has a duplexer built in, meaning it will flip the page for you and print on the other side) you'll save on paper too -- that's a convenience because you'll be running for refill of supplies less often. Because it's not a color printer, you won't have to manage buying refills on 4 different colors (CMYK), just one toner supply and you're good to go.
I connected this printer to WiFi with WPS push button setup (though I have an ethernet cable nearby available and may switch to that), which sadly my Eero network does not support, but my cable modem's WiFi router does support it (and the networks are in bridged mode, which means the printer will be accessible to both networks).
The printer is very small, which was perfect for where I had in mind to place it (on a shelf in the living room near the TV). When I first turned it on, there was a long warm up cycle where there was a clicking noise which initially made me worry. However, after I printed a couple of pages, future operations with the printer didn't seem to continue that sound, to be complete i will say the printer is super quiet when it prints as far as laser printers go. I printed several e-mails from my android phone to test it, the phone detected the printer automatically, easy. MacOS also detected the printer automatically, and when I printed a 9 page e-mail with lots of large photos, the printer printed very fast (recall, it's a monochrome printer, so everything's black and white) and two sided by default. My windows PC also autodetected the printer and printed easily. And my iPad just showed me the printer in a list of printers.
This is not my first Tank-based HP Laser printer, and my earlier one, which is about 2 years old, is still running strong. I am passing my last one over to another family member and they were happy to get it, most notably when finding out how cheap the toner was.

Lots of Storage Space with Higher-End Speeds
on August 9, 2022
Posted by: RobWLINY2
The Crucial P3 Plus 2TB SSD is a faster SSD drive (not the fastest), and I verified that it reached the advertised speeds with CrystalDiskMark benchmarking software. When compared to a lower-end SSD drive, which might only get 560MB/s, the P3 Plus is about 9 times faster (900%). The drive included with my current model DELL laptop was 20-25% faster than the P3 Plus, though. During everyday usage, I doubt one would notice a 25% difference so I'm only taking off 1-star from the rating for this.
Having the 2TB of storage allows me to have room on my (gaming-capable) laptop, such that when I download large games I don't have to worry as much about whether there is enough room for them. It can also be used to make local copies of files one might ordinarily store on external/network-drives (videos or other content one might not normally have room to store on a laptop's SSD).
Pros:
-It's a relatively fast SSD, speeds as-advertised
-2TB means Lots of storage space
-Geek Squad can install it if you're not comfortable
-Price for the 2TB model is in the more affordable range
Cons:
-Although Faster than some, it is not the fastest SSD out there
