I recently had a similar problem with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite that I purchased for my 8 yr. old. She plugged her earbuds into it as she normally had done many times prior to, and all of a sudden, the sound went out. I checked all of the settings just to make sure that the sound wasn't muted. Come to find out, after the tablet was restarted, the sound resumed. I checked with the Geek Squad department and he told me that, since there was no sign of the plug breakage from the earbuds, sometimes software updates that don't complete for whatever reason may knock out the sound, but, anytime that happens, just restart the device. If that doesn't help, try a factory reset. If all else fails, and you have Geek Squad protection, just take it into Best Buy and they'll look at it and, if it can't be fixed, they'll replace it.
