I bought the OOMA over a month ago and just got my old phone ported. I have the device on the router and not in front of the router. This set up for me is preferred since if the OOMA goes out, the entire home network goes out. I have found no delays or problems using it this way.
The calls are clear and I have had just one network issue where the call had a slight delay-echo. This went away after a few seconds.
I also opted-in to the OOMA Premiere for a year which is an additional $120 (more or less) per year. That is the total cost to run the OOMA. I figured out that in 8 months I will have paid for the OOMA and then start saving about $40 a month on phone service.
I also went to cable network since DSL here is just plain lousy. It did feel good to get rid of our substandard phone company who really could care less about any issues you have. Not that cable is some queen of the highway.
Setup is easy and there were no real issues. There are a lot of tweaks you can do with Voicemail including linking it to Google Voice or just having the message sent to you via email. Or just letting your OOMA get it. You can also put your own answering machine on, but that makes calls NOT go to your voice mail.. at least that is what happened to me.
Check out the forums at OOMA and see what is going on. The customer service is MUCH better, too.
What's great about it: No expensive phone bill, free long distance to USA/Canada
What's not so great: Can be confusing to configure if you have limited tech knowledge.
I would recommend this to a friend!

WORKS FOR ME!!
By SeattleZach from Seattle, WA
This is a great little device. I had this plugged in to my DSL router in 5 minutes and started receiving calls about 10 minutes after opening the box. That is fast and easy. Honestly .. this reminds me on an Apple product ... simple - straighforward - easy.
For the folks who say, "Ir doesnt' work for me" you may wish to check your broadband connectivity. Just because you have DSL or Cable doesn't mean this will work for you.
With my non-scientifific research, I'm guessing you'll need AT LEAST 1.5 Mpbs downstream and 512 kpbs per second upstream to get a realible connection. I have 7Mmps downstream, so Im OK.
Works great .. I would recommend this to all my friends and family! Good bye phone bill!

QOS is more important than raw speed
October 8, 2010
If you have good QOS at 1.5Mbps, this VOIP device works well. I did upgrade to 3 Mbps and didn't notice any difference. I can, however, download a movie much faster.

Difference between G and N wireless

In short, speed. G provides UP to 54 Mega Bits Per Second Mbps. 802.11 provides UP TO about 120 Mbps. I don't like the way they sell this because who has a connection that even comes close to 54 Mbps let alone 120Mbps.
The idea is that if you have more computers on the N network, it won't slow down as much. But still you have a garden hose feeding a sewer pipe.
Some users get better connections with N because the signal is sent out twice the rate as G. Still, I see no need until you get a least 20Mbps in your residence. Of course this is a subjective analysis.

Wired vs wireless security

I have an old 802.11b wireless router with WEP security. Should I upgrade to a router with WPA and/or WPA2 security?

Do I still need to worry about security if I wire my laptop to the router? In other words, does wiring eliminate the need for encryption?

Thanks!
WPA2 is Wireless only. I would upgrade to WPA2-TKIP/AES . Most wireless routers have that level. You can't use WPA on a wired connection. It is for wireless only. You should have a firewall for the wired connection.

will any wireless routers work with dial up internet service

Nope, can't be done. Dialup is analog signal. Routers require digital signals.

is this what i need?

I bought a new emachine & have a old emachine one has a eithernet conection the other has a usb conection. The router that you sold me only has 4-eithernet outlets. What can I do to hook the usb to the back of the router with only eighternet conections?would a wireless have been the right router?or is their an adapter.is this it?
You can't plug USB into Ethernet. I could not find an adapter. What you COULD do is buy a network card and put it in your machine.

how do i get wireless service to another computer w/ a wireless card?

can i just but a wireless router like the belkin wireless g router will that work. we currently have cable internet service on the one computer. do we need anything xtra besides the router and how do u set it up?
You can do the Belkin without an issue. You just plug the Cable modem into the Bekin Internet port and then the Belkin will produce a new wireless address for all the computers.
The ONLY issue you may have is if your Cable modem and the Belkin have the same IP address, but I doubt they do.

can you hook up a wired computer and a wireless computer at the same time?

Yes, if I understand your question. If you mean the SAME computer to the SAME router, it can be done. I can't think of a reason why you would want to do that. IF you can get wired, that is always going to be more reliable.

what routers have up to a 1/4 to 1/2 mile range

Out of the box the FCC regulates the amount of power (watts) that a router can use. You really can't get much more distance without a serious YAGI or Directional antenna. A gain of 10dB may get you to about 25 Meters.
Try Google "CANTENNA" which is a wave guide directional you can build at home or BUY one.

I have a Samsung Blue ray DVD player that I want to watch Nexflix movies on, and a Mac computer. Which router do I need?

Netflix does not currently support MAC OSX. If you are saying that you want to stream from your BR Player to your Mac, you can't do it like that.

You could run Windows in a virtual machine and watch the movies that are online only.
