I bought the OOMA over a month ago and just got my old phone ported. I have the device on the router and not in front of the router. This set up for me is preferred since if the OOMA goes out, the entire home network goes out. I have found no delays or problems using it this way.
The calls are clear and I have had just one network issue where the call had a slight delay-echo. This went away after a few seconds.
I also opted-in to the OOMA Premiere for a year which is an additional $120 (more or less) per year. That is the total cost to run the OOMA. I figured out that in 8 months I will have paid for the OOMA and then start saving about $40 a month on phone service.
I also went to cable network since DSL here is just plain lousy. It did feel good to get rid of our substandard phone company who really could care less about any issues you have. Not that cable is some queen of the highway.
Setup is easy and there were no real issues. There are a lot of tweaks you can do with Voicemail including linking it to Google Voice or just having the message sent to you via email. Or just letting your OOMA get it. You can also put your own answering machine on, but that makes calls NOT go to your voice mail.. at least that is what happened to me.
Check out the forums at OOMA and see what is going on. The customer service is MUCH better, too.
What's great about it: No expensive phone bill, free long distance to USA/Canada
What's not so great: Can be confusing to configure if you have limited tech knowledge.
I would recommend this to a friend!

WORKS FOR ME!!
By SeattleZach from Seattle, WA
This is a great little device. I had this plugged in to my DSL router in 5 minutes and started receiving calls about 10 minutes after opening the box. That is fast and easy. Honestly .. this reminds me on an Apple product ... simple - straighforward - easy.
For the folks who say, "Ir doesnt' work for me" you may wish to check your broadband connectivity. Just because you have DSL or Cable doesn't mean this will work for you.
With my non-scientifific research, I'm guessing you'll need AT LEAST 1.5 Mpbs downstream and 512 kpbs per second upstream to get a realible connection. I have 7Mmps downstream, so Im OK.
Works great .. I would recommend this to all my friends and family! Good bye phone bill!

QOS is more important than raw speed
October 8, 2010
If you have good QOS at 1.5Mbps, this VOIP device works well. I did upgrade to 3 Mbps and didn't notice any difference. I can, however, download a movie much faster.

is aspect ratio distortion normal?

noob here: is 3:4 the only aspect ratio that doesnt distort the picture? my smasung c670 has options for 16:9 screen fit and wide they all make people look fat and short, 16:9 isnt as bad but i lose picture quality...is this tv just making the 3:4 bigger and thus lowering the picture clarity or is that how hd format is?
First off the display is called 4:3 and it is low resolution NTSC video.

To get high res, you need a device that will output HD signals of 720P or higher. If you try to push low-res (4:3) then all you get is a big, noisy picture.

To get HD, you have to output to at LEAST 720P. 16:9 is the ratio that relates to 720P/1080i specs.

i am looking for lcd monitor or tv it works with my pc ,cable, dvd player, security camera system

You could put a video capture card in your computer but that would be a limited option. There are not any monitors that do ALL the inputs for the things you need. (Given the little information you provided)

for an HP CQ60-615DX what cable shoud I use to connect to an HDTV?

I want to view/hear the things on the laptop on the television...
this laptop only does VGA. You need a VGA cable for video to your HDTV. If your HDTV has no VGA, then you can't do it.
You also will need an output audio to your speakers since VGA is just video.

can you display a laptop screen on a digital tv ... if yes .. what cable is needed?

Yes. Most laptops have at least a RGBVGA out port. Mpst TV's have RGB/VGA input. All you need is a VGA male-male cable in most cases. Also, you must also switch from the computer to VGA out. The owners manual will explain how to do this.

get xp drivers on new computer

I would like to buy this computer from best buy: Model: I580-5108NBC
(i5, 8gb ram)

I need windows xp drivers for it. Can I download those from the PC manufacturer's website, or get them on a cd?

I realize I will not be able to use all of the memory it has with xp. That doesn't matter because I just want to play my old games for windows xp but Windows 7 has compatibility problems. Also, I will not use Vista ever again, so that isn't even a possibility.

I will be running Linux (Ubuntu) primarily and would like the option to dual boot into windows xp to play my old games. I am not concerned with getting newer games since I've switched over to consoles for that.
I would run XP on a virtual machine like Sun Virtual Box. You will need an XP disk to do so. You can also use Virtual Box on Windows 7 to run XP. I run Sun Virtual Box on Ubuntu and XP as the Guest Client if I want to run XP stuff, which is minimal. I recommend you get 8 GB or more RAM to do VM machines.
