Wow is this a fabulous Metal album! If you are into Metal and horror, then "Appointment with Death" is a match made in Metal heaven!! Lizzy Borden "Appointment With Death" is as diversified as Metal gets. This is by far, one of the best, most unique of all Metal albums released in the last few years. You will never nail down the exact Metal genre of Lizzy Borden, all you can do is listen, then be thrilled and blown away!! The lyrics are death & horror themed, musically Lizzy Borden is as powerful a talent as any band in the Metal world. Lizzy's vocals are taylor made for Power Metal, yet he makes vocal changes depending on the song and moment. "Abnormal" has a really cool Punk Rock chorus happening throughout, "Appointment with Death" and "Bloody Tears" are all out Thrash Metal, the heavy onslaught of these two songs are worth the purchase alone. "Live Forever" is a catchy Heavy Metal tune that has that Power Metal flavor. "Tomorrow Never Comes" is absolutely one of the best Metal songs I have ever listened to. Coupled with Lizzy's vocals and insanely intense guitar playing of Ira Black, I am left amazed in a state of Metal euphoria!! "Under Your Skin" is a Progressive Metal approach that rocks as hard as it shocks. "The Darker Side" is what would be considered the slowest song on this album, yet it is heavy lined and sinister with all the moody darkness you come to expect from Lizzy Borden, trust me, this song is the perfect ending to this outstanding album. I could go on forever about how outrageously great this album is, take my word for it, you are getting quite the Horror Metal package here from Lizzy Borden's "Appointment with Death." This is really, really, really a must own for every Heavy Metal fan. I have pled my Metal case for Lizzy Borden "Appointment with Death", the rest is up to you!
George Lynch plays lead guitar on "The Death of Love". The liner notes are insanely great, with 20 pages! It is basically a book, loaded with complete lyrics, song and musician credits, 9 pages of band photos (very cool), extended credits and thank yous.
What's great about it: Lizzy Borden's vocals, the entire band, every song, diversified Metal!

The remaster of "the honey drippers Volume One" is a cool, yet quick listen. I have always been enamored towards "Sea Of Love", my favorite track here. Robert Plant sounds most at ease and real on "Sea Of Love". "Rockin' At Midnight" is the get up and dance like it's the 1950's tune, again, Robert Plant carries the song. "I Got A Woman" always sounded filler to me, "I Get A Thrill" and "Young Boy Blues" are done well, easy listening treasures are they. Overall, this was quite a unique blend of Big Band and 1950's soda hop flavor blended together. Back in 1984 it was a culture shock for me to hear and accept Robert Plant doing this music. Forward to 2009, the shock is over and "the honey drippers Volume One" has turned out to be a fine, mellow, chill down of a listen.
What's great about it: Robert Plant on vocals, "Sea Of Love" & "Rockin' At Midnight
What's not so great: Way back in 1984, more songs could have been added?

Show me the monsters! A clever film all the while.

Cloverfield takes off on the concept of "you are there" filming that we have seen with "The Blair Witch Project". It works, I actually feel the anxiety and intense confusion as the characters scramble to anywhere, trying to flee from whatever. The pods, eggs, or whatever they are, speed out of the night sky to hit Manhattan, taking down high rises and the Statue of Liberty. I question the actual scale of the Statue of Liberty's head, this head looks rather small when it careens into a Manhattan street. Where are the monsters? Why are they here? You do not see a monster/space alien until you get a glimpse of one while it peruses through skyscrapers. The scene depicting a woman "blowing up" behind a curtain at a triage makes no sense, again, show a monster!! The best and spookiest part of this film is the scene where "little monsters" or things with wings are infiltrating the subway and tunnels, chasing the confused and shocked characters to madness.
The ending to this film is very, very, scary. It actually saves the film, showing guess what..... an extremely large monster! The alternative endings are not that different from each other at all. Yes, "Cloverfield" is worth the buy, it is a scary nightmare I would not want to encounter at all. This film should scare you in some way or form.
What's great about it: Filmed as though you are there, feels like a living nightmare!
What's not so great: Not enough monster shots, exploding girl is for what reason?
Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes gets the deluxe treatment from 20th Century Fox on this release. The disc offers a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a pair of audio commentaries (one by director Burton and a second by composer Danny Elfman), a half-dozen documentaries, extended scenes, multi-angle capabilities for some scenes, trailers, television commercials, a still art gallery, and a music video. Those with a DVD-ROM drive can access a script-to-screen comparison. This is a superb disc.

Any Tim Burton film is going to be dark, creepy, scary and melancholy. Enter "Planet Of The Apes", the 2002 version. Yes, the story line veers away from the original movie, yet the plot remains the same. Mark Wahlberg performs convincingly as an upset astronaut, looking for his missing astronaut monkey. The one major drawback to his mission is that he winds up on a planet of the future that is overpowered and outsmarted by apes. The social commentary throughout this film gives it a unique quality, for example, sympathetic apes defending humans, political apes debating the rights of humans and an ape army dictated by an out of control, psychotic, ape general named Thade. Kudos to the make-up and special effects. The scene depicting an army of angry apes hunting down humans in a thick jungle and taking them by force is terrifying to say the least. The ending to this film makes this re-make worth the rewind. If you think the movie itself is a terrifying nightmare you never want to have happen to you, the climactic ending is doubly worse! I simply cannot compare this film to the original classic, I can only say in my opinion, this is one scary movie worth owning.
What's great about it: Make-up, scenery, dark & eerie backdrops, new story line

Joe Walsh, legendary guitarist of The Eagles, has released solo material over the decades, "But Seriously Folks" is from 1978. Man, wow, has this album never grown old with me. All 8 songs are Rock & Roll gems. "Life's Been Good" is an amazingly catchy song that carries on for a joyous eight minutes and fifty seven seconds. This song basically established the roots of classic Hard Rock, you can hear vividly the signature guitar sound of Joe Walsh in all of its glory here. Glenn Frey and Don Henley of the legendary Eagles give a hand on background vocals on a few of these songs. Overall, this album flirts with Hard Rock and comes away as a Classic Rock masterpiece. You will have no trouble kicking back and/or rocking out to this Joe Walsh release. "But Seriously Folks" is an outstanding value and must for fans of great Classic Rock.
There are no lyrics in the liner notes, thank yous, song and music related credits are found.
What's great about it: Joe Walsh & his unique vocals, "Life's Been Good" is awesome.

"Unboxed" is for every Sammy Hagar, Hard Rock or Heavy Metal fan! Whether you are just starting a Sammy Hagar collection or have some of his albums already, this is a must greatest hits to have on hand. There are tunes here to party to, get revved up by or just plain chill to. Deep album cuts are found with "Baby's On Fire" and "There's Only One Way To Rock", these two tunes are guaranteed to get the adrenaline flowing! "Heavy Metal" is a song that has that old school Metal riff happening, this tune is a great throw back to the early 80's. Many popular hits are here with "I Can't Drive 55" and "Give To Live", the first is the greatest song to cruise to and the latter is simply a flawless and inspirational power ballad. The Red Rocker definitely established his status in the world of Metal, "Unboxed" proves it. Sammy Hagar can sing and play the ballad just as strong and powerful as the heavy stuff, this is one diversified and legendary musician and a CD that is addicting.
What's great about it: 12 greatest hits, deep album cuts too, Sammy Hagar of course!

If you are looking for a legitimate, classic, vintage Thrash Metal album that pounds away with pure power, here it is.... Metal Church "The Dark". Released in 1986, this is one great album. Every song has it's own signature of heavy, with undisputed and undeniable riffs and solos. The late David Wayne is at his very best on "The Dark", giving the entire album that eerie feel through his vocals. The lyrics are without a doubt cool and to the point, not going overboard with unnecessary shock and awe imagery. This is why "The Dark" works so well, the music truly fits the lyrics, the melancholy and spooky moments align fittingly for this reason. "The Dark", "Psycho" and "Method To Your Madness" are three songs that embark on the symbolism and identity that Metal Church strove for here, simply legendary Metal tunes are they. "Western Alliance" is a great tune that will make you stop and think, it eerily symbolizes what actually is happening in the world today. Without any hesitation, make this an album to add to your collection of Metal. You will find that you won't be afraid of "The Dark", you will love it!
The liner notes are 8 pages of complete lyrics, credits, thank yous and a full page - full color photo of the entire band. (a cool photo it is). Metal Church on this album was: Kurt Vanderhoof on guitar, Craig Wells on guitar, David Wayne on vocals, Duke Erickson on bass and Kirk Arrington on drums & percussion.
What's great about it: Thrashes and rocks very heavy, the entire band, every song.

Tesla has released an album of 12 brand new tunes! "Forever More" is what I call Hard Rock excellence that lyrically relates. The lyrics of these songs are a celebration of life's ups and downs, delivered in true - blue collar, Hard Rock fashion from Tesla. Jeff Keith on vocals sounds like he is having the time of his life, he sings better than ever on "Forever More". Every song is excellent, it is obvious from the quality of "Forever More" that this Tesla effort was well worth the wait! Yes, the power of this Hard Rocking album will get you psyched out and have you searching out the entire Tesla catalog of albums, guaranteed. Tesla has returned, thank goodness.
Tesla is: Jeff Keith on lead vocals, Frank Hannon on electric and acoustic guitars & keyboards, Dave Rude on electric, acoustic and slide guitars, Brian Wheat on bass guitar and Troy Luccketta on drums and percussion. The liner notes are the coolest, with 16 pages of full color band photos, with 2 pages devoted to each band member, filled with great full color photos and thank you's for each. Tons of credits and a super cool, 2008 year in review, written by Tesla, makes for a classy touch.
What's great about it: All original and new tunes! Tesla at their heaviest! Lyrics to relate to.

Essential Cheap Trick album! Live Rock excellence!

Cheap Trick "at Budokan" is an incredibly essential, live Rock & Roll album to own! I have this album in the top ten live Rock albums ever released, it is that good. The songs are tremendous, filled with the trademark energy of Cheap Trick, yet the live essence surrounding the music makes for an inspiring listen. This album was recorded in Japan, at Budokan, in April of 1978! This music is incredibly relevant to today's Rock sound, it has not lost any mileage with me after all these years. This is the album that truly made Cheap Trick a household name. Since "at Budokan", Cheap Trick continues to stay current with Rock & Hard Rock, releasing an extensive catalog of great Rock albums which spans four decades! The very famous track "I Want You To Want Me" is here in all of it's Rock glory, with the classic cover of Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shame". "Surrender" is a signature song of this great band, it borderlines on the Punk Rock side and still has that catchy appeal it bestowed so brightly, back in the day. "Need Your Love" and "Come On, Come On" are two more tracks that can light up any concert stage today. Overall, this is required Rock & Roll listening for fans of all Rock genres. You can honestly walk away from listening to "at Budokan" and realize how much influence Cheap Trick has on today's Rock sound. Musically, Cheap Trick is so good, simply one of a kind.
Cheap Trick are: Robin Zander on vocals, Rick Nielsen on guitar, Tom Petersson on bass and Bun E. Carlos on drums. The liner notes here are five stars! With 12 pages of complete lyrics, many black & white photos of Cheap Trick, many credits and a thank you written by Rick Nielsen.
What's great about it: Great live album, tremendous quality sound, every song, Cheap Trick!!

Corrosion Of Conformity is live with riffs galore!

Corrosion Of Conformity does not pretend, nor do they wallow away with unnecessary shredding. This band delivers what many may consider to be Stoner Metal with a tad of Retrospective Metal. These guys are obviously influenced by great Hard Rock, Metal and Southern Rock icons such as Nazareth, early Black Sabbath and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Maybe they are not influenced by these legendary bands at all. What Rock influences I hear from a band is not set in stone, yet I really like what I hear on this album. Needless to say Corrosion Of Conformity blends together their music to produce a tough Metal sound & vibe with extra crunch from the rhythm section. The whomp and stomp power of this music will appease any fan of Heavy Metal. This is not commercial stuff, it is heavy and blue collar Metal, inside and out. The overall live sound is quality, with plenty of heavy riffs throughout every song. Not one boring tune here folks, this is an album to crank up loud on a clear Summer day and party to.
Corrosion Of Conformity is: Pepper Keenan on guitar & vocals, Woody Weatherman on guitar & vocals, Mike Dean on bass guitar, keys & vocals and Jimmy Bower on drums & percussion. There are no lyrics or liner notes, only limited song credits.
What's great about it: A heavy band, cool songs, quality live performance, sounds great.
