Metal fans are very fickle: make drastic changes (or change anything for that matter), that they'll cry foul. This is certainly the case with Suicide Silence's self-titled album. Come on, you should have seen it coming. The last album paid tribute to late frontman Mitch Lucker, and while it retained their core sound, it started to lean a little in nu-metal territory as did The Black Crown. Hello! Mitch Lucker was a nu-metal fan. I can't say for sure that he would have wanted to do a nu-metal album with the band, but I'm sure he would have experimented with it. Anyway, once you get past the Slipknot meets Korn meets Deftones vibe, you might find that this is an honest record from Suicide Silence, and while I don't recommend it to just anybody, I say give it a chance.

Overkill is one of those thrash metal bands that put out excellent albums no matter what. Their sound is old school, but heavy enough that they earned the self-proclaimed nickname "The Wrecking Crew." The Years Of Decay proves this and then some. Listen to the neck-breaking thrasher Elimination and the groove-laden Playing with Spiders/Skullkrusher and you'll get a good idea. Highly recommended.

Who said that power metal had to be theatrical? Apparently, Blind Guardian takes it to heart blending a bombast with orchestral sounds. If you thought At The Edge Of Time was top notch, prepare for Beyond The Red Mirror.

I'm not a huge fan of power metal, I'm very picky. Vocals can't be too cheesy, music has to be heavy (given) and catchy. Blind Guardian seems to have the right balance without being too over the top. While A Twist In The Myth is not perfect, it is still a great listen, and an excellent precursor to At The Edge Of Time, which is absolutely top notch. Recommended.

It must be a rule that if you're a metal band from Australia, that you have to write some of the heaviest and catchiest metal possible. Here's some Australian metal bands: Thy Art Is Murder, Parkway Drive, The Amity Affliction, and....Aversions Crown. Here we have their third album Xenocide. Here's the good with this band: three-guitar attack, a lot of atmosphere, excellent sci-fi themes. Here's my one gripe, and it's a little one: there's not too much diversity in their sound to help them differentiate their sound from Thy Art Is Murder. Just a little con, otherwise they're great to listen to. Tyrant is an excellent album, and this one is just close behind. Recommended.

If most Nevermore fans compared this to later efforts like Dead Heart, In A Dead World, This Godless Endeavor or even The Politics Of Ecstasy, they'd likely say that it's a different album than what they're used to hearing from the band. Well, every album should be different, and afterall, this was their debut. They were finding their sound. When I first heard it, I wasn't fully in love with it, but now I can listen to it from start to finish. What Tomorrow Knows is signature Nevermore, same with Garden of Gray, and the riff in C.B.F. is a headbanger. That's just to give you an idea. Get the reissue for the remastered audio and bonus tracks.

If you've never watched any of the Resident Evil films, start with the first one. If you haven't since since Extinction, here's a brief synopsis, mild spoilers ahead: Alice vowed vengeance upon Umbrella and she delivered, but loses her superhuman abilities. Alone, she makes her way to Alaska and reunites with Claire Redfield (whose lost her memory when she and other survivors were attacked), and makes her way to Los Angeles and meets up with new allies at a prison surrounded by hordes of undead. A call from nearby ship gives the survivors hope that help is onboard the vessel, but something is wrong.
This entry is notable for original Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson returning to the director's chair after being absent for the previous entries (he was the screenwriter however), and for having more top notch action and special effects. Sony has made weird decisions not only by releasing just Resident Evil: Afterlife in 4K and no other RE films, but also the first Underworld and nothing else. I get that they're doing it to coincide with the theatrical release of the new Underworld and new Resident Evil films, but only one per franchise? Regardless, it is a worthy purchase if you're looking to upgrade.

There's a reason why Jeff Loomis is a great solo musician, and his work in Nevermore shows it. Granted this goes beyond the typical Nevermore sound as his influences are on full display here. Also check out Plains Of Oblivion.

This was a long awaited release for Nevermore fans when it came out in 2008 as it was announced back in 2006. First, the show in Bochum, Germany had to rescheduled due to Warrel Dane getting sick with an infection. Then, besides the one update from a couple of weeks after the show was recorded, there was some inactivity which had me worried. The eventual release put me at ease though. Despite whatever overdubs were recorded in the studio and the mixing/mastering by Andy Sneap (Testament, Exodus, Machine Head, Megadeth), I think this is a clear representation of how they'd sound live as they kept it pretty raw sounding. Those also wanting the visual component can see this concert on the DVD that is available separately.
