Imagine someone you cared about joined a religious cult then disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. Then you start dreaming about this person crying out to you as he or she is drowning in a lake. A similar scenario supposedly happened to Warrel Dane with a girlfriend. This became inspiration for Nevermore's Dreaming Neon Black, about man's lost someone he loved starts to progressively go insane. This was a kind of weird one for me when I listened to it, but grew to like it so now I thoroughly enjoy it.

Arch Enemy's Anthems Of Rebellion is a perfect blast of thrashy Swedish death metal. Where Andy Sneap (Nevermore, Exodus, Testament, Machine Head) did mixing/mastering on Wages Of Sin, he graduated to producer/engineer for Anthems resulting in a sonically clear and heavy production and mix. Check this out.

If you're like me, one of the first Arch Enemy songs you heard featured Angela Gossow on vocals either from Wages Of Sin or Anthems Of Rebellion, in which case you're probably open-minded as she helped broaden the band's fan-base while simultaneously facing criticism from fans of their first three albums with Johan Liva, but let me say you should check out those other albums. Another first on Wages Of Sin is the immaculate sound courtesy of longtime producer Fredrik Nordström (Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, In Flames, Dream Evil) and eventual longtime engineer Andy Sneap (Machine Head, Testament, Exodus, Kreator). Listen to the entire album from start to finish and try to pick out a flaw.
As I stated earlier, definitely check out their earlier albums with Johan as well as Wages Of Sin and the rest of their discography.

Century Media is great at reissues. I don't usually buy for extra songs, but for the remastered audio. Some reissues were only released in Europe, but some from Dark Tranquillity and Arch Enemy are available in the US. Burning Bridges was vocalist Johan Liva's last album with the band. Say what you want about Angela Gossow. Johan was terrific, but Angela did a much better job as vocalist not only expanding the band's scope and sound, but also their popularity. About Burning Bridges: Arc h Enemy already established themselves in the melodic death metal world, but this album showed more diversity with elements of progressive metal and grindcore, and in my opinion, it only goes further with every new album they release. Wages Of Sin followed after this.

Nevermore really went all out on their first release after re-signing with Century Media, showing a bit more guitar virtuosity and more progressive elements that weren't as prevalent since The Politics Of Ecstasy. It's too bad that this would Steve Smyth's only album with the band not because of kidney failure and being placed on dialysis, but citing personal and business reasons. This album would later be followed by singer Warrel Dane and guitarist Jeff Loomis' solo albums, a live CD/DVD The Year Of The Voyager, and Nevermore's last album The Obsidian Conspiracy.

Spiritual Genocide is a special album for Destruction as they released it for their 30th anniversary, and it shows in the music how special it is: fast, groovy, heavy, old-school thrash. Highly recommended.

Arch Enemy's debut Black Earth was recorded and released in 1996, but I don't it got a domestic release until 2007 when I first bought it. Only a couple of bonus tracks were included, no remastering or anything. Four years after both Stigmata and Burning Bridges received deluxe reissues with remastered audio and bonus tracks, Black Earth finally got similar treatment with remastered audio and not just a handful of bonus tracks, a bonus CD! I'm not saying anything bad about the deluxe editions of Stigmata or Burning Bridges, I love them. It's very interesting that Black Earth got even better treatment, and at a low price! Get it now!!!!

If you've never heard Destruction before, trust me, you're not alone. Their early albums either weren't released on CD in the states or are hard to find/discontinued. Thash Till Death off of their Antichrist album from 2001 was my first exposure to their music. Their album Day Of Reckoning is a gigantic slice of old school thrash that shows why they're part of the German Big 4 along with Kreator, Sodom, and Tankard. I recommend this and the rest of their discography.

Nevermore's 2000 album Dead Heart, In A Dead World was a critically acclaimed beast. So in 2003, Enemies Of Reality was highly anticipated. What went wrong? Well, the band was at the end of their contract with Century Media, and not knowing if the band was gonna re-sign or not decided not to properly fund the album. This left them with Queensryche/Candlebox producer Kelly Gray (someone who wasn't a heavy metal producer) to produce and mix the album. They were unable to get Dead Heart, In A Dead World producer Andy Sneap (Testament, Machine Head, Napalm Death) to at least mix & master. The final product ended up sounding muddy, tinny and at times incomprehensible how Century Media got away with putting this out without putting up the cash to get it done properly. In 2005, they finally put out a proper version of the album that was remixed & remastered by Andy Sneap. THIS is the CD that should have been released from the beginning. If you own the original, replace it with this. Your ears will thank you.

The film that inspired the television series of the same name, Limitless made good use of the "only 10% of your brain" myth before 2014's Lucy. Bradley Cooper is a brain-fried author who is introduced to NZT-48, a new drug that allows him to fully utilize his brain and get back on his feet. However, like most drugs, it has some side effects....deadly side effects.
