An Anime Classic in 4K!

An anime classic that looks great in 4K. Now, keep in mind that this is a traditionally animated film from the 80s. So, the intent here seemed to retain the original cell animation with HDR emphasizing the neon lights and effects, but generally, this presents the film as intended. It seems to strike the right balance. The detail you can see in the backgrounds is amazing. GHOST IN THE SHELL is another 4K release that I think looks great, but I think that film looks even better with the 4K treatment. Still, if you're an Akira fan, this is a great disc to add to your collection.
There is no slipcover on this release, which surprised me. You get the 4K disc with the 2011 English 5.1, the 1988 English 5.1 and the Japanese 5.1. No special features.
The Blu-ray is included and no special features are listed on the package. My understanding is that several of the features from the 25th anniversary set are not carried over, but I have yet to verify that myself.

Stunning Steelbook

The Steelbook is stunning. Just absolutely stunning. One of the best of 2021. Some people will be disappointed with the transfer because of the clean picture, of which digital noise reduction was applied. But honestly, I didn't find it distracting at all. Cameron himself supervised it, and if they are saying that he did then I suspect he actually did supervise it, so it's how he wants it to look. I found no problem watching it. I prefer a film-like presentation for films not shot digitally. Maybe it was just the quality of the film, but once I put this disc on, I was drawn in by the story and the action. I recommend it, and even more for the packaging if you get the Steelbook. Stunning!

Being a fan of the original comic (or graphic novel) on which this is based, I felt like this was a rather generic telling. The animation looks good and the product itself is good, but the story here is too long and not a surprise to anyone who has read the source, or anyone who has seen Nolan's The Dark Knight film. I would not rank it amongst the best of the DCAU films. It's more middle-of-the-road fare.

Stunning! 4K UHD Steelbook packaging for a legendary film. I purchased this one solely based on the packaging; I had never seen the film before but I had heard of the director's work and I had been wanting to see it. Rather than stream it in HD, I truly wanted to experience the film in 4K knowing that Studio Canal had put so much effort into the restoration, which they detail in a short special feature on the 4K disc in this set. I highly recommend this one for 4K fans, Steelbook collectors, and fans of the film.

Stunning 4K Presentation pn an 80's Classic

I settled for the standard release instead of the limited edition Steelbook. While I have seen the Steelbook in person and think it is fantastic (better than the pictures do it justice), I like the artwork on this new release. It includes a slipcover with the same artwork. The 4K Blu-ray menu also utilizes this image with HDR highlighting the glow from the Matrix of Leadership, which is cool.
So, how does the transfer look? It is a considerable step up from the previous Shout! Factory Blu-ray. I was doubtful it would be a vast improvement, but it absolutely is cleaner, detail is sharper, and the image with HDR doesn't look artificial--it's simply beautiful to behold. There is no other way to watch this movie now. Be aware, however, that this includes the widescreen theatrical presentation though. So, if you like the 4:3 TV aspect ratio with the entire animation footage present, you will have issue with this release. It's too bad they couldn't include both, but I suppose that leaves room to get us to dip again on the future release that has both.
I highly recommend this release no matter which other version(s) you own. And certainly at the price currently (under $20) it's a great deal.

Absolutely worth the upgrade to 4K. I have the previous Blu-ray from Scream Factory and I wasn't sure a 4K upgrade would benefit this film much. Boy, was I wrong. The picture is very pleasing. Film grain is intact but not heavy. The reds and lights of the opening scene pop and create a picture with more depth. Details can be seen in faces, clothing, and the effects. Oh, the effects. Though little of the werewolves is shown, what we get looks amazing and the transformation scene has never been more grotesque. The previous Blu-ray is included and it has loads of very interesting special features that I also thoroughly enjoyed after watching the film. The Howling is a classic. Buy it!

I got the slipcover, but I was in the store. Currently, all issued should have the slip. The wrapping is over the slipcover. At some point they might stop issuing slipcovers, but they are on the early runs out there now. So, even ordering online you should receive one.

I have a Samsung 3D capable th, that I have played 3d bluray discs on. My samsung BD payer doesn't function anymore. Will this play 3d discs faithfully?
