How many times can you use the pad before throwing it away?

Can you confirm that it actually does have an on/off switch to turn off the brush? I have carpets with fringes on the edge, and I need a model that won't suck them in when the beater brush is on. Floor/carpet setting not adequate. Need to turn it off.
