Is this laptop good for a college student?

That will depend on the programs the student will be using. This is an entry level, light use system, with its Intel Celeron processor. It is not meant for heavy use, multi-tasking or working with more demanding programs like engineering programs. It is capable of browsing the internet, it can do light work with Microsoft Office programs.

No. This model does not have a CD/DVD drive. You can use an external CD/DVD drive with this device though, by just plugging into a USB port on the computer.

There is almost 10 times the storage space on the 1TB standard drive but the performance of the 128GB solid state hard drive is up to 30% faster than a standard hard drive. This includes boot up of the system, opening files and programs. If you use relatively few installed programs on a device, you can store files on an external hard drive with the solid state drive.
