Hi, I just bought this computer open boxed a few days ago, and it seems as though it is unable to charge. Every time I put my mouse over the battery icon, it says "plugged in, not charging". I have yet to find a solution to this problem. Thank you.

This system is equipped with energy manager software. It protects your battery from over charging or prolonged charging when the battery is charged already to 80 to 100%. This prolongs the life of the battery. Let the battery drain to below 50%, then plug it in and it should start charging.

Is this laptop good for a college student?

That would depend on your curriculum. This system would not be good for CAD or graphic design, film or video editing. It would be good for Microsoft Office projects. Word documents, Excel Spreadsheets, PowerPoint Presentations. The Pentium processor would be the minimum a college student would want to consider. If it's in your budget, consider moving up to a Core I-5 processor based system.

How do the HDD and the SSD work together? - I assume they are both part of a single drive letter, and operating system and "computer chosen" most used files live on SSD? Everything else lives on 1tb HDD? - Is this 128gb SSD as well as the 1tb HDD.

In the case of this system the drives will have individual drive letters. You have access as user to both the standard HHD as well as the SSD drive. You are correct, that the operating system resides the SSD for quick start up. The user may also want to put large working files or gaming programs on the SSD for quick recall. Then once the project is done or the game is no longer used, the file or game can be archived on the HHD.
