Digital cameras store the images on a removable media (in most cases) such as Compact Flash or Memory Stick. A SLR(Single Lens Reflex) Camera shoots it's photos on film and has changeable lenses, full manual control and shoots “Pro” type photos. If it is a D-SLR (Digital-SLR), it does everything a film SLR does, but uses a Digital Sensor instead of Film. D-SLR Cameras come in two sensor sizes 1.5 (1.6) and Full Size (35mm film equivalent). Both D-SLR sensor sizes are considerably bigger than a compact camera sensors.
