Taking photos at an indoor concert

Need advice! Say you are in the 20th row of an indoor concert. The venue is dark, the performer is under colored lights. Could you give me a place to start as far as settings for my digital SLR. (f stop, shutter speed, etc.) I have tried different things, but the results just aren't excellent yet. Thanks!
Hmmmm.....Tricky. OK. First you need to set the ISO up to around 800. You'll have some noise, but we will address that in a little while.
Next set you Aperture to around ....f/11 or f/13. You need some depth. The temptation is to open the Aperture up big but that gives you a shallow depth of field. You should be using a 300mm zoom lens and that will give you the soft depth of field.
Set the White Balance to Artificial Light (Tungsten). Using Auto will mess up the colors.
Lastly...and this is the fun part....Set the Shutter as low as you can but not below 1/60. If the shot looks too dark...back off the Aperture to f/8 or a little larger until you get close to what you want. You might have to up the ISO to 1000. DON'T TRUST THE METER. Keep working with the Aperture numbers. Use you LCD Screen and shot until you like the shot.

As for noise in the photos look into Noise Ninja. It is a Photoshop plugin that greatly reduces noise in photos.

Are all AA batteries rechargeable?

My Polaroid Digital Camera uses 2 AA batteries - are there only certain types that are recharable?

Where is the best place to get a recharger?
Only rechargeable batteries can be recharged and require a special recharger that is designed for that battery type...NiCad...NiHM...Rechargeable Alkaline and Lithium. Rechargers usually come paired with batteries, a set of AA and AAA is common. Additional batteries can be bought separately.

WARNING: Not all AA batteries are rechargeable. Putting non-rechargeable batteries in a recharger can be VERY DANGERIOUS.

Stop by your nearest BestBuy. They have a great selection of rechargeable batteries and the Camera section will help you get the battery that will be best for your camera.

ABOUT CAMERA SONY SLR

I AM PLANNING TO BUY A SONY SLR, BUT I WANT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE VIDEO ALSO! DOES IT HAVE THAT FEATURE??
The ability to record video is a relatively new feature being added to some D-SLR cameras. Nikon and Canon having just a couple of D-SLR models supporting it. Currently there is no video record feature available on the Sony Alpha series at this time.

What is a good camera to take videos at concerts?

There is a ton of noise at concerts, which make it nearly impossible to get good sound quality. Which cameras can give me good sound quality and good picture quality? I'd prefer a digital camera, but whatever works.
All camcorders might have a problem with over driven audio, such as what you generally find at a concert. Unless the camcorder has a manual mode for the audio levels allowing you to turn down the record level. One way around this is to cover the microphone on the camcorder with a couple (or more) layers of tissue paper. Be careful to just tape the outer edges of the paper to the camcorder body so as not to cover the mic with the tape, otherwise you'll block the sound off completely. The idea is to muffle the sound slightly...like ear plugs.
There are several high end pro camcorders that will have adjustable audio at www.bestbuybusiness.com. The Canon XL2 and GL2 and the Sony DHR-FX1 and DCR-VX2100 would work great for concert shooting.

what does it mean when the screen is white & power will not stay on?

It might be a power issue. Try changing to a different battery and see if it still does it. If it does still have the problem take it to your nearest Best Buy and have the Geek Squad take a look. They will advice you what can be done.

What if the camera turns off turns on but then turns off again

i drop my camera now it is turning on but then turns right off what do i do
Could be any number of things. Sounds like the power button might be stuck and the camera is going into the start up and shut down cycle over and over. Or...possibly the battery might have been damaged and is not suppling enough amperage to keep the camera running.
It would be best to take it to your nearest Best Buy and have the Geek Squad take a look. They will advice you what can be done.

about digital camera's

is there a digital camera that uses a usb port on the computer
Generally all cameras have USB connection on them. Some have special cables designed to only work with that particular camera. The benefit to having a USB connection on the camera is of course always being able to connect to your computer, the draw back is that while you are connected your camera cannot be used until you are done transferring the photos and disconnect.
A card reader is helpful in that it does not use a special cable and it frees your camera from always being needed to transfer the photos. Also there is less wear on the camera from not having to do double duty.

Is a Viewfinder a Critical feature for Sunlight Photos?

I am analyzing the purchase of a new Digital Camera. I am an amateur photographer slated to take an Australian vacation. I understand that sunlight can wreak havoc with taking good digital photographs and I don't want to miss getting great photos in the Outback and of the Barrier Reef. Should I place lots of emphasis on finding one with a viewfinder, or should I consider this a minor consideration?
A viewfinder is not necessarily a “Have to Have” feature. It is very helpful in situations where the LCD Screen is difficult to see. I find the looking through a viewfinder helps me compose a better shot by allowing me to concentrate on just the area of the photo without the distraction of everything going on around it.
There are Glare Reduction covers you can put on LCD Screens to help in bright sunlight and fold out shades that attach to the screens. Any of these can help, but still are not a perfect fix.
There are several Compacts that have viewfinders and many of the Advanced Digitals do. Of course all D-SLR cameras have viewfinders. I would lean toward the D-SLR ...better photos, more reliable, easier to use, longer battery life and more lens options. After all...how often are you going to get a chance to go to Australia?
