if you used a 1000mm zoom lens in the past for sports photo's what optical x would this be equal to.

This just a approximate. Around 32x.
The basic formula is mm x 1.6 (or 1.5 depending on sensor size) / 50

Which camera is better for kids (ie minimal lag time) and ease of use?

I'm looking at purchasing a new camera for our family. I have a 4yo and a 10 month old baby, so I need a camera that is either a DSLR or has a very short lag time between pushing the button and taking the picture. Price isn't a big issue, though I'd ideally like to stay around $500.

So far I've looked at the Nikon P80, the Nikon D80, and several of the Sony and Canon models.

I guess my question is.....are any of the "advanced" cameras quick enough for taking pictures of kids, or do I really need to go with a D-SLR?
If you have been thinking of a D-SLR or Advanced Digital you will be much happier with the D-SLR. You will always have more control with the D-SLR, you can chance lenses for better zoom and optics, you can get a clearer and sharper picture due to a larger sensor. Also the D-SLR will still have a shorter Lag Time (almost none) compared to a Advanced Digital. Sony, Canon and Nikon all have models starting around $499 all with great features.

IEEE/External Mike/HD/Hi Def.

Looking for a camcorder that has external mke cap. also IEEE connection. If possible that is HD, and if not, HD or mini DV. External mike is important for recording in services. Haven't done much reading on hard drives, but more people seem to have them. Also does Hi Def, take a lot more memory? thanks Bruce
A Mic input is getting to be a rare option on camcorders as of late. The higher end models still include this input. But it seems if you find one with a Mic input it dosn't have Firewire out. Hard Drive based camcorders are a great convenience but generally do not have a Firewire out due to that they are already a Avi file so they tend to have USB only for file transfer. Also DH video is a MUCH larger file and take a lot more space on a Hard Drive/Memory. Check out Sony, Panasonic, Canon and JVC Camcorders as a starting point. They tend to keep the most requested functions available on the upper end models.

Does the Nikon Coolpix 10.0MP have a touch screen

The Nikon S60 has Touch Auto Focus and Auto Exposure and allows you to touch the subject on the LCD screen that you want to focus on and the camera automatically sets the focus and tracks the subject for optimal exposure.

Is it possible to connect an analog hi 8 camcorder to the JVC GR-D870 or canon ZR900 to convert video from hi 8 to DV?

Both Camcorders include the A/V (Audio Video) cables but do not support record input to the camcorder through these cables.

What wide angle lens can I use for a Sony Cybershot dsc-w7?

There is no Wide Angle Adapter I could find for the DSC-W7. It has a retractable lens with no thread mounting area for a filter or adapter.

lcd light in camcorder

I have a Cannon dc330, and it doesn't have an external light for recording in the dark. The website says it should have a built in lcd light, however any shots taken at night still aren't visible, is there something I need to do?
To shot video using the LCD video light in low light situations with Canon’s LCD video light, flip over the LCD screen to face your subject and activate the video light function. The soft light emanating from your LCD illuminates the area in which you are shooting allowing you to get high quality video even in less than ideal lighting conditions

Flash and studio strobes

I am looking for a gift for my husband. He is a advanced photographer, usually photographing the outdoors. This year he wants to start doing more studio work. I know he needs a good/ great flash and lighting. Help me!!!!
To start getting into studio type lighting the photographer needs to get away from using the on camera flash. He can get a simple, basic studio lighting look with just adding a external Flash unit. Without knowing which brand of camera the options are: Canon and Nikon use a external Speed/Zoom Flash with a Transmitter attached to the camera to work the Flash remotely off camera. If it is a Sony Alpha the wireless transmitter is built into the camera, you just need to add the Speed/Zoom Flash.
Getting a Soft Box to attach to the flash to soften the shadows and a reflector for bounce light to get a more sculptured lighting effect. He can get surprisingly great results with just this simple setup. There are many tutorials that can be found on line.

HOw many hours can a camera record if it has a 40GB Hard drive memory

These are just average numbers....not in any way exact.
Recording Time:
HQ (Average: 9Mbps): 430 min.
SP (Average: 6Mbps): 640 min.
LP (Average: 3Mbps): 1240 min
Different Brands and Models will vary. Also if it is a High-Def (HD) or Standard Def(SD) unit.
