what is SLR short for?

As has been said...SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. The single lens part being that there is only ONE lens attached to the body of the camera. Some other types of cameras such as “Range Finders” and “Medium Formats” have 2 lenses. One that would go to the film and one that would go to the view finder. The problem with that is the photograph would not be exactly what was seen through the eyepiece, it would be slightly off. This is where the “Reflex” part comes in. By using a Mirror or a Prism, the image seen through the lens is bounced up to the eyepiece for viewing, then when the shutter button is pressed the mirror flips out of the way and allows the image to expose the film. This way the photo is exactly what the photographer sees without a slight offset. This was known as “See Through Lens” photography.

Do you do routine maintenance on digit cameras?

I have an older Canon Digital Rebel which needs routine cleaning / calibration and maintenance on it. Does Best Buy do that? Or should I take it to an "outside" shop?
Yes, BestBuy can offer routine maintenance service through Geek Squad.

Do miniDV or other camcorders output A/V AND Firewire/USB simultaneously?

I want to view/monitor small TV and have output to computer for projection at same time occasionly.
In most cases yes. The A/V (Audio Video) output is not disabled when using the Firewire or USB connection. If you use the A/V in/out to pass video through the camcorder to the computer the A/V cables work as input only. A/V in/out is only available on some models.

What is Full HD?

For the Best Buy staff:
What are the specification differences between HD, Full HD, or any label for other qualitative/quantitative differences in recording formats?
1080p is also known as "Full HD", that means 1,080 horizontal lines are used to create your TV picture. The format is currently being used to produce Blu-ray discs, but not TV broadcasts. The “p” stands for progressive scanning, a technique that scans and displays all of the lines at the same time in one single pass on the screen. Most HD are 1080i, the “i” standing for interlaced scanning. Interlaced means the picture is formed on the screen by scanning in two consecutive passes where odd numbered lines are displayed in one pass, and the even numbered lines in the pass that follows. The common HD format for camcorders is 1080i although Sony may be releasing a 1080p camcorder, the HDR-FX7 HD,soon. Panasonic and Canon also have several models.

Good durability and fast shutter speed?

I work in an animal shelter, and we need to be able to take good pictures of the animals to put on the web. The animals move quickly, so shutter speed is important. We also need to have good quality photos as they can be pretty small on the web. Finally, these cameras need to be durable as they take a beating during the photography sessions. Can you recommend a good camera that would work well for us and is still reasonably priced
The compact cameras may not have the speed your looking for when it comes to shutter lag time. A D-SLR has the fastest time. Also a compact camera will not have the sensitivity you will need in low light situations and I have found that some animals have an uncanny knack of closing their eyes when a flash goes off. For that reason a D-SLR would be good for you because the sensitivity can be set very high to not need a flash. D-SLR Cameras are more durable and you can add larger lenses for more Zoom. Canon, Sony and Nikon all have excellent cameras starting around $499.

Are there special cameras for places where the humidity is high ? and I ll like a digital camera at least 15X megapixeles?

are there special cameras for places where the humidity is high. and I ll like a digital camara with at least 15 X optical.. and more than 8 megapixeles?
The main problem with Humid areas is condensation, both inside the camera body and the lens. There are many tricks to help with this listed on line from using plastic zip-lock baggies to drying your equipment in the sun. A weather resistant compact camera maybe less susceptible to condensation than others. Finding a camera over 8mp will be easy, finding one with 15x optical zoom is a little harder. Most compact cameras are 3x-7x optical zoom (on average). If you are looking for higher Optical zoom and better quality in your photos you might want to look at a D-SLR camera.

Which mini cam would be good for shooting in low light conditons?

Night Recording is a feature found on many camcorders that lets you record images in low light without sacrificing color. A few camcorders can shoot in no light (0 lux) using infrared technology. Images shot in total darkness appear as monochrome images in playback mode. Sony has the most camcorders that have Night Shot feature built into them allowing you to shot at 0 lux.

issues with playback on a mini DVD

we want to buy our own camcorder, but are hesitant on what kind to get, as we just borrowed one that recorded to a mini DVD, and took the DVD home, and it will not play on a computer with a DVD drive, like we thought it would. is there some sort of finalization or something on these mini's that we missed?
There might be many factors which prevented your DVD from playing back. Finalizing could be one, age of the DVD drive/player could be another. It is hard to recommend a Camcorder without knowing what kind of finale use of the footage will be. If you just want to view the footage on a TV, any camcorder will work using the A/V (Audio Video) Cables. If you want to play back on DvD, a DvD based should work but you may want to look at compatibility with the player first. Hard drive and Flash Memory based camcorders are fast, reliable and easy to use. Conversion to DvD can be done either be transferring to computer and burned using software, captured by use of a USB device such as the Dazzle from Pinnacle, or burned to a stand alone DvD Recorder.

What ad on equipment do I need to upload my analog movies from VHS-c to my computer?

I am trying to find a way to upload by VHS-C movies to my computer. I went into best buy and they showed me what it is. I can't remember the name of the equipment I need to do it.
This would be more of a question for the Camcorders section. There are several USB capture devices on the market. The most popular and user friendly is the Dazzle from Pinnacle. It connects to your computer's USB Port and to the Camcorder using the A/V (Audio Video) cables.

Hi- DEF needs

I would like to buy a HD Canon camcorder but I don't think my Sony RB30 desktop has enough power to be able to edit and burn in HD. I have 1500 RAM and about 75gigbytes of hard drive free. I would like to here from you with what I should be looking at in the way of computer to do what I want. I would like your thoughts on software ,I have premium elements 4.
The amount of memory is important, but more so is the amount AND speed of the drives, although you may want to go ahead and expand your computer it to its max 2gig of memory. The requirements of each system and type of HD file is different. There are some capture cards that require at least 2 Sata Hard Drives at 10,000 rpm in a Raid setting to work with HD Video files. Some programs that need Vista Ultimate to operate. Some only work with DV Tape, some don't work with AVCHD files or only certain types of AVCHD files.
Other programs require very little, such as the VideoStudio 11 from Ulead that is good with Hard Drive and Flash based camcorders.

Once you have edited your HD product it will need to be Burned to DvD. If it is left as a native AVCHD file it can be burned to a standard DvD played on a Blu-ray Player.
