I am a semi professional photographer that wants to upgrade equipment. I have a Canon now but was thinking about switching to Nikon.

What brand is better and why? Is it true the Nikon payrts are all metal while Canon is not 100% metal. Which model of Nikon would be best to buy and lens. I shoot everything including sports.
When it comes down to it Canon and Nikon are the preferred cameras by field photographers. They are rugged, reliable and get Great shots. I shoot on Canon, and have been very happy with my Digital Rebel and 40D (extremely cool camera). I have friends that soot on Nikon D40(sweet but small), D70, and D200. Canon has the larger selection of lenses. Nikon does have a little more metal parts. Neither are ALL 100% metal. You can’t go wrong with either brand.

How can I go about getting my camera fixed if I don't have my receipt & warranty information in my possession?

Hi, I recently dropped my camera & am getting a "lens error" message when I turn it on. My boyfriend purchased the camera and extended warranty for me this past Dec '07. However, I am away at school right now and the receipt and warranty info is at my house. Can I go to my local Best Buy here and still get the camera fixed, even though the warranty info is not in my possession? Please let me know, thanks!
You can contact 888-BestBuy to obtain a copy of your receipt. When you call, select the Concierge option for assistance. Customer care will be able to assist you in getting a copy of your receipt.

Can I still get a camera for shooting black & white pictures?

I have no idea if digital cameras have any type of card or something to produce B&W photos or if I need to hunt down the good old fasioned kind that uses film.
There are many manufactures with both Compact and Digital–SLR cameras that have models with B/W (Black and White or Monochrome) settings. Both my Canon 40D and Sony a200 have B/W settings. When you look at a camera, check if it has “Creative Mode” this is likely to be a good area to find a Monochrome, Sepia or Black and White setting. Even if the camera has features you like but does not have B/W mode you can just transfer the photo to the computer with the supplied disk of software and “remove” the chrominance or set color saturation to 0 to make it a Black and White. This way you will still have the Color original intact.

what is the best video camera for recording highschool football games?

Look for a high zoom factor. The higher optical the better. The trick with shooting games is the action is FAST. A camcorder with higher shutter speeds will help with seeing that action. Look for models with at least these features and you be fine.

How do I tell which camera has the best zoom features?

I am a concert goer and I want a digital camera with great zoom features. I would like the camera to be somewhat compact but not necessarily a very slim camera. I am not sure of the difference between optical and digital zoom.
The difference between zooms are: Optical is like a magnifying glass. Zooming in is like moving the magnifying glass closer to your subject. Digital Zoom is when you have ran out of optical and you now just ENLARGE you subject. This makes the picture Jagged and Pixelated. When looking for a camera or camcorder, look for the highest Optical zoom before it gets to digital. Also a larger diameter lens. This lets in more light, more light means sharper image. Canon, Panasonic and Sony have Advanced cameras that are a little bigger than a compact, but not as big as a full Digital-SLR. They also have 10x or above Optical zooms.

Best for documentary-style video?

What is the best camcorder and BEST software for creating a documentary style movie that includes video clips and pictures with a narrator?
OK, lets look at software first. You will need a multi layer program. One that allows you to stack overlays of effects, CGs (Character generator) and Lower Thirds. This will also have layered audio track so you can have the sound track/music, natural sound and voice over all controllable with different volume levers to get proper mix. I edit with Premiere Pro 2.0 from Adobe. There is also Finale Cut, and Sony Vega. All are excellent editors and will easily do everything you need and more.
As for Camcorders, you will need one with a mic input, preferably a XLR, for a higher quality audio than what the “on camera” mic will give you. Get a hand held and a shotgun mic for interview, narrations and nat sound (natural background sound). The Sony DCR-VX2100 and Canon GL2 and XL2 are great cameras. I use the Canon XL1. What is the best digital camera right now?

I am shopping around for a new digital camera, I have an older Sony Cybershot, but I was told to try Canon. What are your recommendations?
Canon and Nikon have been pretty much the industry leaders when it comes to digital imaging. Their D-SLRs are the preferred cameras when it comes to professional photographers. Both manufactures also have a reputation for durable and reliable products. I personally shoot with a Canon 40D. The best thing for you to do is try several models at the store and go with what feels right in your hand and you are comfortable with. Some people (like myself) like a heavy cameras, others like very slim. If image quality is what your after then take a look at the Digital-SLR. All models have different features that others may not have so look for the features that interest you.

Old Camcorder - how can I digitize my old 8mm tapes?

I have a Sony analog camcorder. I have some 8mm tapes with footage that I would like to upload into my computer. I have a dvd burner that I can burn the 8mm tapes onto, however, the format of the footage on the dvd isn't recognized by my computer. I've heard of some digital camcorders that have a "pass through" option. Which camcorders offer this option? My goal is to get some footage shot of a band onto a dvd so I can put it in my computer and upload it to youtube.com. Thanks for any help you can give me !!
If you still have a functioning camcorder, then check out the Dazzle from Pinnicle Systems. This is device that bridges between analog devices and the digital world allowing you to capture your video on the computer. You than can edit if required and burn a DvD.

Best camcorder for concerts???

I have a camcorder but the sound is horrible and scratchy when recording loud sounds, such as concerts, club shows, etc. I need one that isn't too outrageously priced that will record great video with good quality sound even in these conditions.
Sound, especially excessive sound, can cause havoc with the limiter in a standard camcorder. You will need to look for a camcorder that has manually adjustable audio levels and set it to a very low setting. Sony, JVC and Canon have models in the semi-pro arena. Take a look at some of them at Bestbuybusiness.com.
