Nikon - AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens - Black
Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens: Leave the tripod at home and create stunning still images and HD videos from any distance with this Nikon telephoto zoom lens. The versatile focal length allows you to capture intricately detailed photos of sports events, wildlife and distant scenery. Vibration reduction technology reduces blur caused by camera shake for crystal clear handheld photos and action shots.

I have a Nikon D3000 and I am looking for another lens, my son plays sports so I am looking for more close up shots. What would you recommend?

The 70-300mm is a good choice. I have used very similar lens for years to shoot pro sports.
Shooting with a 200-400 ISO will help freeze the faster action.

How flexible is the cameras setting adjustments?

Does the camera allow the user to take low light pictures w/o using the flash with a timer? Also does it allow for manual adjustment of shutter speed and aperture settings?
It might look like a Advanced Compact camera but it is not quite.
This camera is VERY limited on manual functions.
If you are looking for control over shutter, aperture and flash it would be best to look at either a entry level Digital-SLR or a true Advanced Compact.

After hooking up my unit to my computer, what else do I have to do?

I am trying to hook up my tv as a monitor for my computer. The instructions that I received with the tv show how to hook up the wiring but that is it. What else do I have to do? Special channel setting etc.
1) Connect TV to Computer. Set TV to VGA input.
2) Turn on computer and wait until booted.
3) Go to Display Settings on the computer. (you might have to look for this and/or click Advanced Settings)
4) You should see 2 small monitors listed as 1 and 2. Click on monitor 2 and click "Extend the desktop into this monitor".
5) After a few seconds the TV should then display the computer.

Operating systems vary...but this is the basic way to set.

Hope it helps.

Nikon - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Standard Zoom Lens - Black
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–105mm f/3.5–5.6G ED VR Standard Zoom Lens: This high-quality Nikon lens is a great choice for a standard, everyday zoom lens. It is compact, versatile and ideal for a broad range of shooting situations, ranging from interiors and landscapes to beautiful portraits.

Would this be a good lens to replace the 18-55 kit lens? I'm looking for a lens with a bigger zoom but not too big as far as a distance of 200mm.

The 105mm range of this lens is best suited for portrait type shooting in close proximity or in a studio setting.
Not well suited for zoom shots like sports or nature.

Is it HDCP compliant?

My samsung blu ray player quotes that if my tv does not support HDCP then random noise may appear while using HDMI. I'm going to order an HDMI cable for my blu ray device and it says i should have category 2 HDMI cable. Just wondering if I have bought this category 2 HDMI cable, will I run into issues with my Dynes 24" 1080/60Hz/ LED-LCD HDTV
I found no listing that the DX-24E150A11 is HDCP compliant...however I found indications the 32" version might be.

Only displays 480i

I have my tv hooked up to a Direct TV HD DVR, set on 1080i. I use color coded cables. Anyway, when I turn the TV on, in the top left it shows 480i. I have all settings on my DVR correct for any programming, up to 1080p. So, it must be something with the TV? How do I get the tv to show 1080i programming, or at least 720p?
The TV will show a "p" if it detects a progressive signal.
True HD is at 1080p. Very few things are in true HD.
If you have a Bluray Player you would most likely see 1080p displayed.
